Mia sat on the stool in the medical tent. She wrote down everyones name and charted on each person as the Doc examined them. They did this all the time together. No one walked in with their medical records, so this was the best they had,and besides it was good to chart old wounds and not come upon any surprises later. When all was said and done ,she had a nice little stack of manilla folders, each with a new members name. This wasn't her shift, but Jane had woken her because of the size of the group. She ran a hand through her hair and glanced at the other woman in the tent,"that it ,Doc?" She held the folders and crossed over to a large filing cabinet. "Gotta give them credit, haven't had a group that size in a long time." She grabbed her coat,"alright, heading back to bed,my shift doesn't start for a few more hours." She slipped into her coat and the moved out of the tent.
Outside, she glanced around at the group gathered around. She sighed, and shook her head. Where were they gonna put them all? This place was already bordering on being over crowded. It was time to expand a bit,but it wasn't her place to bring up what everyone already knew. She headed to her tent, moving past the group.
Rochelle gathered up what tools she could and kept them in the backseat of the little car she was driving. She was okay sleeping there if need be, although it would be cold. She had a small stack of blankets to keep her warm though and she had stolen a pillow from the nursing home that had been raided by her prior group in Houston. That was the only thing she took. Maybe she would lay down for a bit after she had a look at the camp.
She wandered towards the walls, looking to see if they were stable enough, occasionally pushing against the siding as she evaluated what she could do to help. Her eyes traveled to Nate who seemed to just be watching from his perch, axe in hand, looking over each of them. It seemed with the snow came a slow down of activity outside the walls and she was pretty sure they could all use a break. She offered Nate a bit of a smile before almost bumping into Hykeem as she toured the facilities. She stopped herself short before barreling totally into him.
"So sorry, excuse me. I'm Rochelle, by the way. From Houston."
Ellen listened to Remy had to say on the CDC. Seemed like they bailed on her as bad as they did on Ellen's squad and the survivor zone at the university. Same thing happened; it got overrun and they got out of there.
She was still indecisive on the experimenting matter however. If she was planning the same kind of brutal experiments the government did on bitten subjects, and those that had turned; she was reluctant to say yes. Still; it had to be put in a vote to the Council, it wasn't her decision to make.
"I'm sorry but that's not my decision to make." Ellen responded to Remy's request. "Such a thing is a matter for the Council to decide. I've got a seat on it but it still has to be put to a vote. Maybe if you'd present your case or your intentions..."
Ellen hesitated and contemplated the consequences of the day's events. She knew she could play the family card for her father and sister so they could stay but the other Council members would most certainly give her grief for bringing in the others to stay. Add to that the request for experiments... Ellen wasn't too keen on it.
"Look... I'll be frank; you're asking a lot for a new arrival." Ellen said. "People are already complaining about us being over-capacity, even though this camp has a no-turndown policy. Also, my friends and I were some of the first friendly military and government people they saw since the outbreak. Some of them were victims to the... purging that occured."
Ellen did her best not to step on Remy's toes and tried to be as subtle as she possibly could, even though it wasn't really in her nature. But some things just needed to be said.
"So add to that a request to experimenting here..." Ellen continued. "Which we know will involve taking tissues of 'live' samples as well... We're a small community here; people talk, words get twisted and get around; it wouldn't take too long for people to start thinking there's government folks here doing experiments. Not too many are going to agree, regardless of your intentions. Truth be told; I'm not sure if I could stand for such a thing either. There's risks there I'm not willing to take, especially not now my family's here."
Ellen couldn't read this woman very well. She knew that if her dad let her be around him she couldn't be all that bad but still... The Andrei-fellow didn't seem ruthless either but Ellen knew better than to judge a book by its cover.
"So... yeah sorry." Ellen apologized. "I'm usually very agreeable but I'm not inclined to say 'yes' at this moment. I know you probably mean well but you're gonna have to make a strong case to both me and Council."
Mac had given Remy a nod in thanks after she told him she was glad he found his family but his face got more serious after Remy made the request to start experimenting in the camp. Mac knew his oldest was sugarcoating her answer but that she really was saying "fuck no" very politely.
He felt a bit of a lump in his throat though when Ellen mentioned people getting purged. Especially since he was supervising for the CIA to make sure it would happen back in Georgia. He couldn't tell for sure, but from the way Ellen spoke he could tell she didn't partake in it, which was really a relief. His children shouldn't have to bare burdens the way he did, or have to do things he did. He did it all to make sure they would never have to, but still the world got fucked up.
Still, Ellen presented a fine case as to why there shouldn't be any experimenting; if they had to bring in live samples people could get bitten. And even if they didn't, you didn't have to be an epidemiologist to know that if you could get infected by coming into contact with walker blood through punctured skin. But on the other hand, something needed to be done and Remy was among the right people to do so. Mac just didn't know whether or not this camp was the right place to do so, especially with so many civilians around.
But Remy seemed exhausted. Whatever was going to happen, it wouldn't be decided here or now, there'd be time for it later.
"Look, nothing's getting decided here and now." Mac spoke after his daughter. "Whatever you waited for to do Remy; you waited this long, you can wait another day. Now please, let's just unload the cars and get some R&R. I really just want to catch up with my daughters now."
Mac went closer to Remy, putting his hands on her shoulders, looking her straight in the eye.
"We've made it okay?" Mac spoke with a softened voice. "We're all alive and safe. Everything you had to endure, every burden you felt; let it go. Now please Remy, go rest up. I insist. I'll unload the cars with some of the people here so don't worry about that."
Giving her a tap on the shoulder, Mac backed out hoping the young woman would take his advice. As for himself, he didn't plan on doing any other work for today other than unloading the cars. As for the future, he'd see what they needed him to be for the camp.

"Oh, Remy! I thought you'd never ask!" Andrei joked when Remy said she could work with him in research. He listened carefully to Ellen's answer, and let her speak her mind before chiming in.
"Don't worry about it, lass. We're not saying to establish a lab right now, hell we don't even know how exactly we're going to go about it. We know how this works, it'll take some time until everyone is certain we're not going to get everyone killed, until we learn how things work so on and so forth. I have done similar research in the past, soon after the outbreak, and so has Remy, so we'll know how to approach this safely. Now..." Andrei had finished what he had to say about the research, and decided it would be time to discuss the future of the settlement. "Regarding the over-capacity. If you want I could help come up with some ideas for long-term survivability, such as power source, food production and preservation. Besides all those, you might want to start thinking about expanding. But that is a discussion for another day, for now let's get some rest. Well, you lot, anyway." Andrei gestured towards the rest of the group he came here. "I'll need to get familiar with the medbay, staff and maybe some of the patient files. After we finish stocking it up, that is."
Even though they had a long trip, he hadn't felt this energetic in months, and it showed. He was ecstatic at the thought of doing what he loved once more, and not just cauterizing a burn wound or stitching a cut.
"Overzealous might have been an understatement Pop." Ellen joked, commenting on her dad's comment about Andrei earlier. Mac just rolled his eyes at Andrei's tenacity.
Still, even though Andrei seemed sincere; it couldn't alleviate her worries about it. And even if it did, they'd still need the vote of the other Council members. Nothing they could do about it now though.
Andrei came up with suggesting about some fields that they already had covered, but Ellen still liked to hear it as well. There might have been things they overlooked or things they hadn't tried yet. But for now she'd inform him about the things they did have.
"Well I'd like to think we've got those fields covered." Ellen answered. "But still, a fresh perspective wouldn't hurt. As for the things you mentioned; we've got dug in generators, we've got an agricultural area with a hothouse for vegetables, and an animal nursery with rabbits for meat, and some goats for milk. We were even able to domesticate a doe, although she's more of an attraction to the children here until we find a buck for her to pair up with."
It was then Ellen remembered the more pressing matter at hand. With her family coming back after so long, she had forgotten for a brief moment.
"Expansion's not really at the top of our list right now." Ellen continued. "Especially not during the winter. There is a more pressing matter at hand and I could use another doctor's perspective on it since Dr. Harding and I don't see eye to eye on it."
Ellen meant the upcoming childbirths, starting with that of Zoey Abernathy. The medical bay was in no way ready for it and it seemed that doctor Harding wasn't either. Maybe Andrei had some suggestions about it. She wasn't too keen on sending the scavengers and her guards either on a mission to any of the outlying cities before but maybe now that she had a skilled warrior like her dad around, it might change her perspective on it.
"Just uhh... come see me after you're done and rest up." Ellen said. "You too dad. I'd like to discuss it with both of you."

There were many times when she didn't understand how the non-scientific mind didn't work. To her, setting up a lab and experimenting on the very things they didn't want to become was logical and necessary. But, according to Ellen, what she saw in perfect logic, others saw as horror. Needless to say, it was a big disappointment and that was clear in her eyes. She said nothing though. She bit her tongue and new she would have to bide her time, but she also knew that if all she was going to do and sit around thinking about what she could be doing, but denied by the council doing it, she would have to find somewhere to do it on her own. That would mean going beyond the walls.
"Right, rest."
Her features turned stern again and when Logan was done talking about rest and family time, she just walked away. There was no pleading her case now. She was too tired to think straight anyways. Grabbing an army blanket out of the trunk of the beemer, she would leave all her gear there as some young kid approached, offering to show her where some cots were to lay down. As Andrei chattered on with Logan and Ellen, she followed and practically melted into the cot where she was laying. But her eyes were wide open as she stared at the ceiling. Others were sleeping as they worked the night shift to keep hold over the makeshift fortress while she tried.
All she could do was remove herself from herself. Getting emotionally attached to anything or anyone was out of the picture and as much as she tried to do detach herself, she found herself thinking about it more. She just wanted to close her eyes and disconnect.
"Hykeem Harvey" he replied to the woman who just introduced herself as Rochelle. "Hykeem Harvey of Estes Park". Since he had been at the bear lake settlement Hykeem hadn't really talked to a lot of people and when he saw the woman was talking to him he became confused. "You look like you could use a tour of the place." Hykeem started again.
"And I am willing to show you around"
He began walking before turning around and gesturing for Rochelle to follow him.

Carter entered the camp with some amazement on his face, it was a nice camp they had set up here. His head looked around at everything they had here, towers, walls, people. "Must have taken some time to get everything running, huh?". His hands gripped his shotgun and spun it around his back, being held by the strap.
He pulled out the same old camera he used not too long ago. He first looked to the towers and took a few pictures of it. He then took a few snap shots of general things in the camp.
Rochelle's eyes brightened a little as Hykeem offered to show her around. She was expecting demands and orders to be barked at her if she wanted to survive. It was something she had become used to with the groups she had come in contact with before. The usual 'Do this or else..' seemed to be the norm and when it came to being a woman, that meant worse things. Without law and rules, the world was a treacherous place. It probably aged her a few years too.
"Uhm, sure. That would be great."
She smiled and nodded to him as she put her faith in his guidance to map out this complex. She had all kinds of questions for him, but she didn't want to overwhelm him and seem too talkative even though all she wanted to do was talk and have human, real human, contact again.
"Estes Park? Where is that? Here in Colorado? How long have you been here?"
Hykeem continued to walk as Rochelle caught up with him. A slight smile crawling across his face as confusion filled her eyes. Hykeem's years as an assassin had allowed him to quickly discover a person by how they act. He could tell that Rochelle was holding back her curiosity.
Rochelle then began asking Hykeem questions. Questions about his home town and how long he had been in the settlement.
"Yeah here in Colorado it's a small town a few miles away. And as for how long I've been here a few weeks."
Hykeem then stopped suddenly out of nowhere and pointed towards a large group of sleeping quarters.
"That's the living quarters and the place we just walked from is the motor pool. Also over there is the workshop for people who are good at inventing and innovating things."
He then continued walking with her following beside him as he took in the walker friendly air.

Rochelle paid close attention as he took her from location to location inside the complex. It was a lot larger then she thought it would be and everywhere they walked, there seemed to be someone doing something. Staying busy was a must lest the marbles fall right out of your head.
"Inventions? What kinds of things are they making here?"
And she wondered where they were getting supplies from. Maybe the workshop was the place she needed to be. She had thought about making a windmill for power, but she never stayed put long enough to implement that plan. Plus, she didn't really have the tools to make that happen in any given place. Now she wanted to pilfer a garage in the area and get those tools she needed.
Hykeem had stopped walking again this time staring at Rochelle.
"So your a engineer I'm guessing."
He looked at her face to face and eye to eye. Hykeem had never really been good at engineering. So he had a lot of respect for people who were. He had always wished he wouldn't have tried harder in college. Maybe if he had he would be more like the people he admired.
Hykeem then turned and began walking toward the center of the giant camp. He walked until he reached a giant military tent. Before stopping to make sure the woman was still beside him.
"This is the Council's tent where they make decisions and have meetings. If you want to do anything you go through them first."
Hykeem then turned around to get a quick look at the area around him. He had been looking the direction of the living quarters when one of his friends came walking in his direction.
"Hey Nate over here I've got someone new to introduce you to."

Nate had been watching the conversation between the scientist and Ellen that he didn't see Hykeem call over to him at first. When he saw that the concersation about a lab seemed to be over he hobled on down to his friend. He favoured his good leg and smiled at pair.
"She's with the new group," he asked eyeing her up and down. "How many of you entered the camp? What skills do you have?"
He realized that she probably had already answered most questions to the council, as he saw them approach from that way, so he just smiled again.
"Sorry was just curious about your crew. I'm Nate," he said holding out his left hand to shake, "and you are?"
Mia could not help but over hear Andrei's words as he spoke to Ellen as she passed the group. It made her pause for a moment. Were they really gonna take his word that he was a doctor? Let him just go through the files on people here? She stood there, slightly shocked for a moment, then shook her head. She chewed on her bottom lip, and then sighed. Hell, better get this over with. She was sure he would recognize her as the woman at the desk during his exam, but she was never properly introduced to him. She moved over to him as Ellen dismissed him. His excitement caused her to pause, as she reached out to tap his shoulder, hand falling to her side. Wow....he seemed a bit over eager. She wasn't quite sure about his state of mind. "Um...excuse me..." she spoke to Andrei, "I...heard you talking about meeting the medical staff, " she smiled at him, "I am Mia....Jane's nurse, and ..you are a doctor?" She raised a brow and held out her hand, she hoped this went well. She had met doctors that thought nurses were beneath them, and didn't know if she could tolerate him if he fell into that category.
"Engineer? Me? No, no." She chuckled as she said that, holding up one hand and shaking her head.
"I worked at a movie theater, but my fiancee he is...was...a mechanic. He showed me a thing or two about engines and how they worked. He was pretty handy with tools and when all this happened and thankfully I'm a quick learner."
He called out to the guy who was apparently on the lookout that she had seen with the ax. She watched as he took his time coming down and when he finally got to the bottom, he walked with a limp. She wondered what happened to him to cause such an injury. It seemed like no one could get away from some sort of injury. She took his hand and smiled as he said his name.
"Rochelle. Nice to meet you. I'm not really 'with' them, I mean, I guess I am. I just followed them from Texas to see where they were going. Hell, I don't even know their names."
"I don't mean to be rude but how did you follow them without them knowing? You were in a vehicle right?"
Hykeem didn't mean to be rude and cut Nate out. It was just the fact that even during times like this someone could follow you without a problem. Hykeem knew how quite and patient you had to be before and now it had to be worse.
He watched observing every movement the woman made. Something about her made Hykeem's heart skip a beat or two. He couldn't tell if it was the fact that she was a more stealthy than him or if it was her beauty. He lifted his hands toward his face stroking his small beard.

Post by Remy LaCroix on Jan 29, 2015 20:47:53 GMT -5
While the others were getting their tours and planning, she was getting her rest. Her mind finally settled down enough for her to close her eyes and drift easily into slumber. Her mind was blank as there were no dreams to be had. Many times dreams were filled with memories and people from her past but this time, there was nothing. The mind quieted down and let her get a few hours of sleep.
When she finally woke up, the sun was still shining brightly overhead. She had learned to live life with only a few hours of sleep at a time and that was only if the circumstances were safe enough. Here, they were. She stretched and looked around to see the quiet room of beds and living quarters that were cordoned off for a bit of privacy. She didn't have much anymore so privacy was the one thing she could hold on to and embrace. With all the people here, she was worried that privacy would be a thing of the past.
With a little help from someone who seemed to be delivering some food to a kitchen, she was able to find a place where she could wash up, although water restrictions were pretty tight. She had less then 10 minutes to wash her hair and body, which was fine with her. Just a quick scrubbing considering how cold it was outside. Once she was cleaned up and told to keep the towel, she changed clothes from the backpack, having stole some clothes from the hotel room. Now she would meander through the complex, hoping to find a friendly face that she could talk to. She wanted to make sure she had the freedom to come and go as she wished. Not that she would put the group in harm's way, but she needed to figure out a way to do what she needed to get done. She also needed to find someone that could back her up in that regard.
Ellen just shook her head as Remy walked away, clearly displeased with her answer.
"It is what it is girlfriend." Ellen thought. "Pouting's not gonna help your case."
Rather than to dwell on it, Ellen focused on her family. She took them to the Council tent and in the next couple of hours she and her family caught up to what was what, and things didn't become interesting until they told her what her brother had done to Anne-Marie. She didn't it very well.
"FUCK!" Ellen yelled, banging her fist on the table. "That fucking snake! Goddamn dad! Tell me you adopted that guy back in the day!"
Mac stayed quiet. Ellen had the right to be angry, but snake or not; Andrew was still his son as well and that would never change.
"We should've... we should've... oh goddammit!" Ellen continued enraged. "You should've let him gotten what was coming to him, let him rot in jail for what he did to Janey Henderson back in the day!" "Your brother was acquitted of those charges." Mac answered. "You were there, you sat in the courtroom." "Oh don't give me that shit dad! I'm not a child anymore! I only shut up back then because of mom but you know damn well Drew was guilty!" "Ellen..." "Dad... please. So much evidence, including DNA in the pap smear... And then you in the CIA, those Pearce-boys' father the director of operations in the NSA..."
Ellen leaned over a chair and sighed, closing her eyes. She figured she should've strangled Drew back when they were kids.
"Just... just tell me you did it." Ellen said. "I know you did it to protect our family but still..." "It would've jeopardized everyone." Mac answered. "Your mom's residency at the hospital, you and your sister would've been branded as the family of a rapist. I mean you were in Colorado but your sister still had to attend school in Arlington. We had to make it seem like Janey Henderson made up the story. I did what I had to do for our family Ellen! I couldn't let Drew destroy your lives as well as his own!" "And Janey dad? What about her?" "She was institutionalized for a time, then their family moved away. Pearce moved funds around to ensure they were comfortable to start a new life someplace else."
Ellen sat down again and leaned back into the chair, still shaking her head in a sort of disbelief.
"Guess Drew made his choice." Ellen said. "Fine. Forgive me for saying this Pop but I hope I never see the fucker again. Ever. And if he's still alive out there I hope he doesn't get anyone else killed. Unlikely I know, but still... guess best we could hope for are minimal casualties."
Anne-Marie tried to contain her emotions as her father told her sister what Drew had done to her, but it was difficult at times and she couldn't help but to let a tear out. She couldn't help but to feel a sense of pride when Ellen started raging over Drew. As far as her father went, Anne-Marie knew it couldn't have been easy for him either to be torn up between his children so she wasn't unsympathetic to how her father felt, and couldn't bring herself to hate him for staying so neutral.
When Ellen spoke about not ever wanting to see Drew again, Anne-Marie shared the sentiment. For the sake of her family that would be the best. However, she knew she couldn't be held accountable for her actions if such a day were ever to come where they'd stumble upon Drew. And she'd let her father know that.
"Yeah, I hope so too." Anne-Marie chimed in. "But I've got a bullet with his name on it if we should see him again. And I will kill him, if only to prevent other people from getting hurt on his account."
Anne-Marie stood by her words. Stubborn as she was, no one was going to convince her otherwise, not even her dad.
"Let's just hope Drew is dead, for the world's sake."
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
