Hykeem was still in the tree line prepared to fire at the first sight of trouble. When Ellen gave the orders for the team to hold their fire. Hykeem had been apart of the settlement for a few weeks and he had gained trust in the council already. To him they had seemed like a group who could get things done and so he decided to stay in the settlement.
Hykeem watched through his scope as Ellen hugged a old man and young woman from the other group. As he waited Hykeem couldn't help but see a pretty blonde woman step away from the group and towards a group of woods covered in snow.
As the woman walked farther into the woods Hykeem followed her with his scope and carefully watched as she quickly came to a stop. Hykeem watched as the women's expression changed and she seemed to be examining something. He aimed his scope a little farther in front of the woman discovering what had brought her to a stop.
A woman had been tied to a tree and her legs had been amputated. As Hykeem looked at the legless woman hate grew into his heart. "Who could do that to someone?" he asked himself.

Rochelle looked over her shoulder as Randall asked why she followed them. Maybe the old man's hearing wasn't so good after all.
"Houston was lost. I had nowhere to go. I saw them getting ready to leave so I figured I would follow. I mean, they looked like they knew what they were doing, so ..why not?"
She looked back towards the group that she felt was wasting energy on her. She wasn't going to harm anyone in this group, but of course, that accidental shot seemed to say otherwise. Her unruly curls were getting in her eyes now as she looked towards Logan, Ellen and Anne-Marie. She tried to wriggle at the zip ties that were uncomfortable around her wrists.
"I'm not a danger, I promise. I just fell and I squeezed the trigger. It was an accident, I swear it."

Remy and Logan intervened when the man started pointing a gun at them. Logan referred to Dan and Remy as 'Doctor', and although he felt the compulsion to correct him, Dan understood what the former CIA operative was doing. Making it seem that their group was comprised entirely of valuable people in this shithole of a world. After the explanations were over, the old man lowered his gun. Andrei couldn't blame him for pointing it at them, far from it, but after the Mexican standoff at the motel the other day, he just about had enough of people and their precious firearms. Still, the gun was no longer pointed towards him, which was an improvement. Not long after, a woman came running out of the woods, yelling "Dad!". At first, he imagined she was the daughter of the guy with the gun, but, to Dan's astonishment, it was Logan's eldest daughter, Ellen. A proper family reunion was under way, and Andrei couldn't help but smile, but the event was interrupted by a gunshot sounding through the air. The source was near.
"Goddamnit." he uttered in a low voice. This might ruin their chances of integrating in the settlement. Most of them, him included, took cover behind cars or trees. Thankfully Randall and Carter went to check it out, returning with a woman dressed in black and with messy red hair. Logan and his daughter's companions got on the job in an instant and were already questioning her. Andrei didn't really have to, but he went anyway to listen to what the woman had to say. There was evident desperation in her voice, as she answered the questions asked. He didn't say anything, leaving the professionals to do that. He studied everything about her carefully. The pulsing of the blood vessels on her neck, tremor and paleness of her hands, frequency of her breathing. Andrei was certain that Logan and Randall knew how to tell if she was telling the truth or not, but he didn't trust them to look for signs of fever or other diseases. For all they knew she could be bitten. However, this shallow check-up revealed nothing out of the ordinary. He genuinely hoped they'd be examined fully when entering the settlement. It would be a disappointment if they just took people's word about being bitten.
Hykeem was still studying the legless woman from a distance with his scope and for the first time in years Hykeem had felt horrible. He felt as if his insides had swollen and were about to explode.
He could no longer allow this woman to suffer. He slowly aimed his scope over the head of the woman preparing himself for the shot. He was moving his finger onto the trigger when a thought jumped into his head. He quickly moved his finger and settled his sniper back on his back.
How would the blonde woman react he asked himself as He moved toward the woman hiding in the little darkness that was left. He kept his eyes solely on the legless walker knowing that if she spotted him she would warn the blonde woman.
When he finally reached the edge of the woods the woman was in he moved even slower keeping his eyes on the ground. Ensuring he didn't step on anything that would make a noise.

They retrieved a woman that looked as though they had taken the shot at Randall. They got her and took her to the rest, she had zip cuffs on her as they interrogated her. She gave some pretty basic reason like that it was an 'accident', Carter couldn't believe that as much as he tried. She then said she had been following them all the way from Texas. Carter's face expressed confusion, he thought back to their journey, had he found anything weird along the way? It seemed their stalker was quite the sneaker.
They had to decide what they would do with her, although when it came to decision making, there was only a few figures who would have a say in things. Carter kept his mouth shut and let the others decide her fate.
Mac grunted. An unlikely story; following them from Houston, through New Mexico and into Colorado. It took an entire group and convoy for them to pull it off, but then again they did kind of paved the way for her.
Mac let up, looking at Ellen and Randall. It appeared that his oldest daughter held a position of power over these people, and he wasn't about to undermine her authority.
"Your show LT." Mac said to Ellen, hinting at the military rank of lieutenant she received after graduating ROTC. "Just tell us what to do."
Mac smiled at his daughter as a sign that he was going to let her take the initiative. It seemed as if he was going to have his hands full with his own group, as he noticed that Remy had already wandered off.
The new captive's fate was left to Ellen, and she appreciated the faith her father put in her. But Ellen wasn't going to leave this woman to her own demise, and she believed what the woman had told them. And if what she said was true about the fixing things, they had definitely some use for her. And even if her skills turned out to be completely worthless, she wouldn't turn her away either. Her conscience wouldn't allow it.
Ellen took a knife and cut the woman's hands loose. They'd have to see about cutting the remnants of the strips on her wrists at the camp later.
"My name's Ellen." Ellen introduced herself to the woman. "I run the guard. We'll hang on to your weapons and tools for now. It's standard-procedure for all newcomers so don't feel like you're being targeted or something. As soon as we get back to camp you all have to submit to a medical examination to make sure you're not bit or sick. After that I have to take you to the Council, but that's just a formality."
Ellen knew the Council was going to insist on her family going through the same treatment as the others, but she wasn't going to take her father's and her sister's weapons, nor that of their group. Rochelle would be another story, but then again she did take a shot at Randall, even if it was involuntary. They probably saved her life by taking her gun.
"Well dad, get your group together." Ellen said. "I'll take you back to camp."

Remy hadn't seen nor heard Hykeem as he got closer to the gruesome visage she had come across. She thought she caught a bit of movement out of the corner of her eye, but when he hunkered down to watch she assumed it was just a rabbit or a deer that hopped just as quickly away. The walker was hungry, that much she could tell, but the effort to break free and eat started off with little will. However, the energy was coming to the walker as she realized there was living flesh within grabbing distance, if only she wasn't tied to the tree. For a long time she just watched the walker, fascinated by the movement and watching the growing hunger awaken the beast on the inside that has made her a beast on the outside.
As Hykeen kept himself quiet at a distance, Logan made it very clear that he was coming. Before anything else could be seen, she pulled out the machete with the speed of light and jammed it into the woman's head, ending the torment that started when she was tied to the tree. She did it without a word and stood up, moving towards Logan as she had previously heard him talking about packing up and playing by the rules.
"Let's go."
There was nothing more to say. What could she honestly? She was squatting down, staring at a woman who had been tied to a tree and tortured. Her legs had been cut off by...someone...and there was a story to be told. But what was it? It was a story no one would ever hear. There were no tears shed, no exasperation, no expression of any emotion on her behalf. It was time to get back to work.
As Hykeem watched the lady kill the walker without hesitations he spoke to the blonde woman giving away his position.
"Hi" he said to her in a harmless voice.
He had never really been calm around women and this one was the same. He felt his body begin to shake as he awaited a reply. He stood himself up from the ground showing himself in the light that flowed gently through the woods and onto his freezing skin. He awaited a reply but when he had looked in her direction she was gone. He then moved toward the walkers getting down on his knees and saying a prayer before re joint his team.
"Dear Lord, please watch over the spirit of the porch woman. I know she may have sinned but we all commit sins and she didn't deserve this. Nobody does. I ask that you watch over the settlement I am in and protect it from the undead? And I ask that you watch over my friends? In Jesus name I pray Amen"
Hykeem then stood and rejoined his friends before they knew he was gone.

Rochelle looked between the group and she saw a dark haired man staring at her. He was looking her up and down which made her incredibly nervous. Who was this guy and why was he staring at her like that? As far as she could tell, he was with the group that drove from Texas as Ellen and Randall seemed to be planted here. The older man with the guns and young girl with him had come for a family reunion and brought a group of friends with him. That was the conclusion she had come to through all this.
When Ellen cut her hands free, she rubbed at her wrists and looked down to see the indentations that were made from the zip ties.
"Thank you. You can take the weapons and tools if you want. I'm just hoping maybe I can get a couple hours of sleep. It was a pretty long drive following these folks here."
Mac inspected the recently second-time deceased walker as he saw Remy walk away. He had seen this type before... at the Reverend's lair. The legs cut off, probably cooked right after... this was bad.
A black man came and said a prayer. Mac had half a mind to tell the guy it was useless, but decided not to. He was never one to go up against people's beliefs, even though he himself had seen so much evil in his life to believe that there was no higher power controlling it all. And he sure as hell didn't believe the dead rising to be biblical.
Mac stood up and walked back to the armored SUV. He decided not to bother his oldest with the thought of cannibals just yet. His group was tired and weary from the travels and in dire need of rest.
Ellen waited for her father to find his wandering blonde friend and come back to the cars. The other woman, the sneaky one, said they could have the tools and weapons and that she was just in need of rest.
"No, what's yours is yours." Ellen said. "We have a fully equipped workshop and motorpool. Now please, take a seat in one of the cars. We'll see to everything once we're back at camp."
Ellen signaled with her hand to round up.
"Alright, everyone in the cars." Ellen ordered. "Sit on the roof if you have to. Let's get my dad's people back to camp."
Ellen got in her dad's armored Chevrolet Suburban in the front passenger's seat. Her friend Charlie sat in the back with Anne-Marie, and when she saw that Ellen was looking in the back rearview mirror, she made a seductive eyebrow movement toward Ellen, teasing her about seducing her sister. Ellen just spoke the words 'fuck you' without sound, to which Charlie made a kissing face towards her.
In return, Ellen gestured at Randall to come take a seat with them in the armored Chevrolet Suburban so Charlie wouldn't be alone with her sister on the back seat. The likeness of Charlie trying anything was nihil but Randall being there would probably prevent it completely.
"Okay let's wait for them all to get in." Ellen said. "Then just follow the trail here dad, it'll lead you straight to camp."
Hykeem followed the orders Ellen gave the team. standing and waiting for Randall to get into the suburban. He then grabbed onto the top of the suburban and stood on the side skirt.
Hykeem stood there waiting for the rest of the team to get into or onto a vehicle. Then he knocked twice on the window to show they were ready. As the vehicle started up Hykeem moved his hands to adjust them so that he didn't fall.
He stood there as the Logan drove up to the settlement almost falling off twice. He didn't really blame him almost falling on Logan because he knew they were going up a bumpy trail but he did tightenhis grip on the pole he held. Once they got to there destination Hykeem's was excited to jump off the suburban and await Ellen's orders.

Rochelle knew it would be cramped quarters while driving back towards this camp. She had no idea what she was in for but was thankful to Ellen that she would get her tools and weapons back. Maybe she could be of some use working on cars or reinforcing gates or walls. She was getting good at using the tools now. Without cellphones, internet or technology of any sort she had to spend her spare time being useful so meticulous hours were spent breaking things down and building them back up again.
She approached Carter and Andrei, having noticed they both came out of the re-enforced ambulance she followed from Texas.
"Nice ride."
She would like to have a look inside and out when they got back to camp.
With her own keys in hand, she started up the engine of her little car that could easily be used for quick supply runs in the area. She was ready to lay her head down.
As her father drove, Ellen grabbed her comms and opened the channel. The ride was bumpy but her dad's car seemed more than up to the task. And telling from the technology inside, it seemed this wasn't an ordinary car either. Dad probably got it off work or something. She reminded herself to ask later.
"Basecamp this is Ellen." Ellen spoke through the comms. "Unknowns are friendly, repeat; unknowns are friendly. Have established contact and are incoming by motorized convoy now." "Copy that Ellen." A voice crackled in response.
Ellen then turned to her father. She still couldn't believe she had her father and her sister back.
"This is unbelievable..." Ellen said. "I thought you two were dead for sure. I mean it's been so long..." "Doesn't matter sweetie." Mac answered. "We're here now." "So what are your people like?" "Most of them are good, some are troublemakers. Got a doctor and an epidemiologist among them, they're both on the level." "And the others?" "Common folk; college kids, lawyers... even got a dirty cop. Not that it matters now. Had some children too but they left with some others right before we came here. Don't expect to see them again. At least not alive." "Christ... Anyone from DC with you?" "No... just me and your sister. DC was a warzone when I left."
They then arrived at the camp. Ellen waited for everyone to get out of their vehicles before speaking up again.
"Alright, people from my dad's group!" Ellen spoke. "Procedure within our camp is that you undergo a medical examination first. After that, I'll show you how things work around here. In any case, welcome to Bear Lake! Now follow me and the guards please!"
Hykeem followed behind the big group keeping a close eye on the blonde. He needed to talk to her but doing it in front of everyone could start a problem. He decided he would wait after her and her friends were tested first so that she would not have anything to worry about. He continued following behind them in silence until they reached the examination bay as Hykeem's called it.
"Randall" Hykeem then spoke. "I'm going to go put my Gear up and then to the motorpool to check on my car if that's okay with you"
Yuri woke up the in the car with a quick shake of his head. He looked around him and saw that not many were with him, wondering where they had gone. "What the... ?". His eyes then met his side window and saw they were all outside, it was just no one had the decency to wake him up. He opened the car door and got out.
"What the flying fuck is going on?"
He spoke rather loudly so the others could hear him from the car. He kept a stare toward the group and stayed on his spot for a moment before making his way over to the others. He came over to a woman speaking to them about Bear Lake. Oh, it seems they had arrived in Colorado now. She said something about a medical procedure that didn't worry Yuri too much, he was usually pretty healthy. He then followed the others in to the camp.

Andrei had driven the ambulance with Carter and whatever people from Ellen's group got inside. The fact that they didn't confiscate their weapons, or at least check the vehicles surprised him, and not in a good way. Still, at least they're going to be examined, which was a plus for the settlement as a whole. He pulled the van to a stop along with the rest of the convoy, and got out of the car.
"'morning, sunshine!" he said to Yuri. "We arrived at the settlement Logan talked about. We're about to undergo a full on medical examination. A doctor's going to check you for bites. What happens after, though, I don't know. I'm surprised they didn't take our guns and stuff. Oh, that reminds me."
Andrei quickened his pace to reach the McAllisters who seemed to be walking in a group. He went up to Ellen, and spoke.
"Ellen, right? Hi, Andrei, I'm the group's medic. I have a few questions if you don't mind. First of all, as much as I appreciate it, how come you guys didn't take our guns or check our cars? For all you know, I could be packing C4 or hordes of rats in every cupboard of the ambulance. Second: Do you have a research plan or something of the sorts, so we can at least know what causes this whole thing and if we can fight it? And lastly: how well stocked is this place on basic supplies and medical equipment?" He said one question after the other, so she can give him the information in one go. He was extremely intrigued about this place, something didn't quite feel right for him.
Randall chuckled. He knew why Ellen wanted him in that car. Charlie was a good kid, and he doubted anything would happen, but Ellen was a protective girl. He knew that just in the way she spoke about her family. He wasn't surprised she wanted some...adult supervision. Randall hopped in the Suburban, but said nothing. He'd have enough to say when they arrived back at camp. A woman had nearly shot him in the head, yet he was more surprised that Ellen's family was actually alive. That's one determined man, that Logan. They needed men like him, though. He'd be of great help for his daughter, and for Randall. Guy was military-trained, and he had a sizable group. Randall wasn't always a fan of letting anyone and everyone in, but he had to look at the positives here. Saying no to Ellen wouldn't be an option--and Randall didn't want to either. The girl's family was back. He wasn't about to advocate taking that away. He looked to Ellen's younger sister. He didn't smile, but he attempted a friendly tone.
"I didn't catch your name. You're Ellen's sister, right?"
