“Just Remy as far as I know. She has the apartment on the top floor? This is her group. Wanted everyone to stay in her place for safety. It might be a good idea for you to come along, too. We have food and drinks up there.”
“You might remember her from when before the world went to hell. Blonde, crazy, likes to play with old ladies.”
June chose to ignore Lily for now and continued, “I'm June. This is Lily and Dallas. I... I haven't been introduced to the others yet.” June made sure to point to Lily and Dallas so Kimberly knew who she was talking about. “It's nice to meet you.”

Dallas' compliment took her a bit by surprise. Just a second ago he was pissed that she was the one that walked in on him and he was justified in that regard. She was the one that made the mistake, not him. But he was in her room and using her bathroom that she assumed would be her private space. She could only blame herself as she never made those boundaries clear. But his tone turned down as he came out and maybe he was a little surprised to see her in a dress that she had no intention of staying in. She was barefoot as she looked over her shoulder at him with a raised brow.
"Uhm, thanks."
She wasn't sure what more to say as he left the room to go investigate the goings on downstairs, and of course Luca would come in right after him during this incredibly awkward situation. He was a sight for sore eyes, but when he called her out on taking a shower with Dallas, she knew she had to nip that thought right in the bud.
"Well, it would have been much better if you were the one that was in there, not him."
He looked at her with a bit of confusion in his stare, a bit dumbfounded at what she said. "It was an accident. I..I thought it was you in there and...when I went in there... There was steam, I didn't see."
Jesus, she was already starting to fumble over her words.
"Well, I jumped out right away. It was...uncomfortable. And that's putting it nicely."
She was just happy to see him and she wondered if now was the time to tell him what she needed to tell him. She was hoping for more wine in her system before she had to say the words that she didn't know how to say. Expressing herself was not something she did well. It was not something he did well either unless it was anger. When he was angry, everyone knew it. When she was angry, she walked away. There was no time for anything else. She moved past him and shut the door quietly, snapping the lock so they could not be interrupted. She also knew that if she waited and drank first, he may very well think had too much wine in her system and that was she was saying was coming through because of the alcohol in her talking and she wouldn't remember a thing in the morning.
"I need to tell you something."
She had to collect herself for a second, thinking of the right way to say things so she wouldn't sound like a stuttering fool. The last thing she wanted was for him to laugh at her or completely reject everything she was about to say. Those possible outcomes were why she always stayed clammed up and was eventually the demise of many relationships. She moved back to the bed and sat down, letting the skirt splay out around her legs as she looked down and picked at her fingernails. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she came forward with what she wanted to say to him since their drive through a few states.
"I was thinking, during the drive here, about things. About you and me. About what you said in Oklahoma, to Anthony. I heard your voice. It's not what you said, but how you said it. It made me realize how selfish I've been."
She looked up at him for a second before turning her gaze back down. She almost felt like a whipped puppy as she spoke feeling as if her expression was almost ridiculous. The words Andrei said to her drove her though. He needed to know she was with him. She needed to convince herself that she was with him and what Andrei said was out of spite.
"All this time I've been running away and here you've been following me. You didn't have to, but you did. You and me, we have ..I don't know...a connection? Somehow we came together and like I told you, I've got your back. It's just you and me. All this time you've been trying to protect me and I've just been thinking that I'm better off alone but I don't want to be alone. I don't play games, Luca. I just don't. I ain't one of those kinds of girls."
Was she getting off track? She felt she wasn't making any sense now. She took a moment to reel her thoughts back in and try to make herself clear now. She leaned a bit and reached out a hand to his, pulling him a bit closer to the bed and urging him to sit down.
"I want you to know I'm done running away, Luca. This is it. This is where I stay. I'm done running from places, from people..." She looked up at him now, catching his eyes with her own. "...from you."
There was another pause as she looked down to where their hands were joined as she stumbled a bit on her nervous words. "I was just hoping maybe I could last a little more than a few weeks with you. You know, if, if you want that."
She was almost terrified to hear the words he was going to say in response to her laying her heart out to him. It was in that moment she realized how much deeper she was into him than she had realized. She had initiated moved with him, offering up the first kiss, inviting him into her bed in the cabin and now this. She was curious to know how he would respond. Maybe it would be one word or maybe he would lay it out for her also. There was one thing she did know though and that was their time together could be short lived on any given day.
"I wanted you to know all this before anything happened. If I never got the chance to say this, I would regret it and I don't want to regret anything when it comes to you."

Candy was all set to go and find where Dallas was showering, and wait outside the door. Then Dallas made all that moot, not so long after June warned Candy not to be rude. She hung close by his side, and simply listened.
Whether they let the woman in or not was of no real concern to this little girl. She after all had just been let in herself, so she didn't feel any rightful say either way. On the other hand, the growing number of strangers in a small space after June returned with photographic evidence of Kim's Old World residency was a concern to little Candy. Any other reason for alarm seemed played with Kim being allowed in, and another man returning.
The proximity of so many unfamiliar faces in the hallway's confining space lead her to back away. She tugged at Dallas' arm, and whispered to him, ”I'm going back up to the toaster.”
Knowing where Dallas was now, she hurried back upstairs to regain some breathing room. At least outside of a crowded lifeboat, there was somewhere to go. Returning to her piles of toaster parts, she began to try and put it back into a whole toaster... only referring to her notes when she got stuck. She set her terrycloth rabbit companion right beside her, to either watch or help her piece this toaster puzzle together.

Damon had a point. In these times, one couldn't be too careful. And they had many people to think about now, but the woman was unarmed. That much Dallas could tell. Damon had been holding a gun on this woman and nothing. She hadn't had a gun on her nothing in hand during her banging on the door. June returned with the picture of the woman that cleared everything up and Damon stepped aside to let her in.
"Welcome to the party..." Dallas said, June intervened with offering names, food, and drink back at the HQ of this makeshift base of theirs. In the morning they'd all need to set out and really set to securing the apartment complex. There was just too many of them to be hold up in that one apparent forever.
"How long are you planning on staying?" He asked the woman. It was a good idea to figure this all out. If she was just looking to get some things and be on her way, that was fine. If she was looking to stay here then that meant she was going to be part of the group. Dallas didn't see it mattering much either way, but it was a good idea to get a feel for how long she wanted to be here. He wasn't going to force anything on her.

Dallas felt the tug on his arm and he turned to see Candy telling him she was going back to her toaster. He had no idea what she meant by that, but he smiled and nodded. "Okay, I'll be up in just a bit." He watched the little girl run upstairs and into the room they were bunkered down in for the night. Turning his attention back to the goins on here, he watched the woman come in. Waiting to learn what she was going to be doing.
((Sorry, it wouldn't let me edit my post on my phone, so here is some more.))
Sam didn't like this, not one bit. They were too easy on this woman. So what if she had lived here. They didn't know anything about her. She saw Damon smile at her , and she slipped her hand in his, the other still holding her pistol. Maybe the drugs were making her paranoid, but she was glad this woman wanted to stay on the second floor. She didn't want to socialize with them and that suited Sam fine too. She wanted to go back to the apartment and eat , barricade the fuck out of the front door and crawl onto that couch and sleep. She leaned her head against Damon's arm," I think I'm paranoid." She mumbled softly.

Damon was thinking for a moment about random events from his past almost day dreaming. He suddenly felt Sam slip her hand inside his and lean her head against him. Her pistol still in hand she mumbled about being paranoid. He understood why she may feel like that currently under intoxication.
He brushed some of her hair away from her face with his free hand "Well its better to be paranoid these days than it once was. Atleast your aware and concerned about your surroundings..." he gestured to the stairs.
"Enough of that anyway. Want to head back upstairs. Ill let someone else flick the generators off... get some food down you." He knew in this state some food and test could calm her down. He had hardly ate much anyway.
No food, no drink. Anthony was on the verge of vomiting. He'd killed an entire family. A family who had been, presumably, doing just fine before he showed up. He was an intruder. A stranger who came and killed and stole. And he killed when the woman refused to...comply. And the gun he used had been used to kill before--to kill innocents. Now was the time for celebration, but Anthony could think of nothing but the people he killed. He could think of nothing but the little girl he left to be devoured by her father.
A new guy with big hair sat at the table with Anthony, a bottle of wine in his hand. He introduced himself and extended his hand. His name was Jackson. Anthony grabbed his hand instinctively, but barely squeezed. He made no eye contact as he let out a weak, "Anthony." That was all he could muster. Jackson noted it was awkward. It was, but that didn't matter for shit.
The guy was phased--big time. When Jackson saw him leave, he had a spring in his step, a sense of determination. Now his eyes were glazed over and he seemed dead inside. Something happened across the street. Anyone with half a brain could see it. This guy, Anthony, was interesting to Jackson. He seemed kinda like a dweeb, overweight--somehow--and carrying a heavy duty rifle. An enigma indeed.
"You alright there, bud?" Jackson smirked. "You seem...out of it. Blink if you can hear me...ah, sorry..." Jackson handed the bottle of wine to Anthony, who pushed it away. What was with this guy?
Jackson decided to play it cool and not come off too strong. Instead, he leaned forward in his seat. "Hey...you, uh, alright? I saw you before you went on the little supply run, you seemed a-okay. Now you're fuckin catatonic!" He was whispering loudly. Anyone who wanted to could still hear their conversation, but Jackson doubted Anthony knew that. "What happened?"
Jackson waited patiently for the man to respond. He doubted whether he'd get an answer considering the two men had just met, but it was worth a shot. Then again, getting to know the people and their life stories was not his objective here.
Luca stood awkwardly in front of Remy, avoiding eye contact as she spoke about how she thought Dallas was him. That was good, thank god, but he didn't know how to respond. Was he supposed to say "good"? Then it sounded like he thought she owed him. If he said "that's what I thought," he sounded like a douche. He cleared his throat to buy an additional second or two to think. "Oh, yeah, alright...yeah, I'm glad about that. That you thought it was him, I mean..."
A dumb response, maybe. His face was flushing red, and his neck was growing itchy. He was nervous. He had virtually no experience in this area, and it showed. Funny how it worked. All the shit he'd done, and he had no idea how to handle this. The rest of what Remy said filled Luca with pride, but also happiness. He smiled widely, his eyes doing more smiling than his mouth. "Hey, we were running together. And we were running from shit. Bad shit. Evil shit. But that...that shit is dead. Gone. We can start new, here. You, me. Anyone else who wants to, too, but you and me before all else." He took a few steps towards Remy and removed his hands from his belt loops.
He had no idea what he was doing, but he took a risk. Luca took Remy's hands in his own and squeezed gently. "Look, you probably have gathered this, but I...well, I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to...this. Stuff. God, I sound like a freshman in high school. But it's you and me, okay? And I want everything you want...and more. To be here, with you. Here. With you." He broke eye contact and chuckled, a defense mechanism, probably.
"I got your back, too, Remy. I...I fucked up back in Oklahoma. I don't like Andrei and Holly bein around us, but if I'm outvoted, that's fine. I...guess I owe them, and Dallas, an apology, huh?" Luca continued to hold Remy's hands, but he turned around to make sure no one was listening. "I owe an apology to everyone. I need to prove to everyone that I'm not who...I was in Miami."
Kim listened to the girl list of names and talk about who was here from the original building. She mentioned Remy, the name wasn't familiar, then again she didn't know all her neighbours. What little time she was home was hardly spent talking to them. She couldn't remember who lives on the top floor. She knew an old man did on the first level, he was never the nicest person, racist. The girl went on to say they were all upstairs and that she should join her. "I may. For now I want to just drop off my things as get what I need from my place."
The scruffy guy, who the girl called Dallas asked how long Kim would stay. She turned and looked at him. "Undecided. May be a day or two. Once I'n rested I'll check on family here in the city, and then keep coming balc here while I search. If I end up finding nothing I'll just leave the state. At most I'll be here a couple of weeks during night."
She shrugged, the empty rifel moving on her back. "Now if you excuse me, I need to go open some windows in my place, freshen it out."

Luca's words stuck with her. He wanted everything she wanted....and more. She could accept that but he knew deep down that she was not ready for anything too deep, too quick. She told him about Lex and he knew how she got burned. She also knew Luca was wearing kid gloves with her just as she was with him. He admitted to not being 'smart' about relationships, and honestly she felt the same way about herself. They had much more in common then she could have imagined.
"You ain't that bad at all this. You've shown me respect. All I ask is that you don't betray my trust, that's all."
She moved a little closer to him on the bed as she kept her hands in his. Her voice lowered as if she didn't want anyone else to hear her voice, which she really didn't. The private moments between her and Luca weren't anyone's business or concern. It was theirs and theirs alone. "I trust you Luca. I told Andrei that I would take a bullet for you and I mean that.." She paused for a second before lifting her gaze to meet his. She felt more confident saying the words she was saying now that she knew he felt the same way. "Don't be afraid to say the things you need to say to me. Don't be afraid to approach me. Don't be afraid of ...this. I ain't gonna be anymore. I know you ain't gonna do what Lex did to me."
She moved a hand to his face, cradling his jaw as she leaned in and kissed him. This wasn't a teasing kiss. This was a meaningful kiss that started soft and deepened. It was as if she was sealing these thoughts for the both of them before breaking it and pulling gently away. Her breath was ragged against his lips as she pulled back, continuing on with her thoughts. There was a slight crack in her voice as she expressed more of what he needed to know on where she stood in all this.
"I don't know where we go in all this but I know where I want to go and it's with you. But we have people now. As much as I wish it were just you and me, it ain't." She thought about Grant's words, calling her the leader of this group. Maybe that was her design in life now. Forget trying to study why all this happened; that turn had come and gone and now she was following another path. "They came here with us. They followed us and we have to keep them safe. Jesus."
She let out a longer sigh as she actually said those words out loud. She slumped down tiredly a bit as she thought of it and it seemed more and more were gathering in their group. She had no idea what was beyond her apartment building but she had every intention of finding out. She was pretty certain there were a few others that wanted to also. Regardless of what was out there, she was of a firm belief that she wasn't going anywhere and if that meant she had to die here, then so be it. She was done running. She didn't know her neighbor Kimberly had come back. She didn't know about the little girl. She didn't know about what Anthony had just done. She didn't know Jackson was an enemy within.
When he spoke about apologizing to Andrei, Holly and Dallas, she perked up a little. Maybe he felt like he had to apologize, but in her mind, he had nothing to apologize for. He did what he thought was right, what he thought he had to do in order to protect those that were with them, even if that meant jumping the gun, literally. She moved her entire body this time, sitting him on the bed completely and straddling over his lap so she could face him. Her hands came to his shoulders to keep her balance and she looked at him with a determined, if not fierce, gaze.
"You got nothing to apologize for. They don't know you. They don't know what you did back in Miami and they don't need to know. You ain't that man, Luca. What you did, you did to survive. You're with us now and we don't do that."
Her heart was beating faster now as she said that. Her skirts drapped down over his legs as she stayed on bended knees in his lap. "What you did in Oklahoma was to protect us. To protect me and I don't take kindly to anyone implying otherwise. Andrei...."
She clenched her jaw as she thought about his and Holly's words. They thought he was a monster but she knew he wasn't. He was volatile, but he wasn't a monster. "That girl, Holly, she said you were like Adolphus. But you're not. You're not a monster. You got nothing to apologize to them for. You hear me?"
She sat in his lap, calming her heartbeat down and trying to push what they said out of her mind. What they thought didn't matter, not to her. But he needed to know the truth about them. What they saw him as. She didn't want him being taken by surprise in anything they said. This time she kissed him again, placing a more fiery kiss on his lips from the heat of the moment. She knew this could escalate quickly locked in the bedroom alone and they had to gather the strangers up and make sure they were safe for the night, otherwise they would be taking strays in all night long if she didn't secure the building. Her heart was beating faster again, but not from anger. Pulling back from the kiss, she leaned in and whispered into his ear softly.
"So, how about that shower now?"
Regardless if he was going to join her or not, she needed that shower. If anything, to feel the heat against her head and shoulders and wash away the grime and dirt collected over their travels. She could wash away the past and start fresh and new, back home. She slipped off his lap and away from his embrace, having no modesty now as she pulled the dress off her body with her back to him, moving into the bathroom and starting the water. It was still hot from when Dallas was in there which was fortunate. She slipped out of the underwear, leaving them on the floor in a crumpled pile of lace and silk to enjoy the fruits of their long journey back home.

Undecided. That was the answer she had given him. It was a reasonable answer. He wasn't trying to impose, or even imply she wasn't welcome. He just wanted to know if there was another person he needed to keep an eye out for.
She said she would be looking for family, and that meant scouting the area, which might benefit everyone to know the area. Look for more food and water, all that. "Let us know if you'd like some help with that." He said to her.
She asked if she could be allowed to go up to her place now. Dallas nodded and moved out of the way. Anthony and Candy both had already gone upstairs. That left this woman, Dallas, and from the looks of it, the newly formed couple.
"Yeah, sorry. He cleared the way to allow her to pass. The other mentioned heading up as well. "You too go ahead, I'll lock up." He said with a nod and a half smile. He watched as everyone who was heading up headed up. He then turned and stepped into the doorway. The breeze felt good against his skin, and he cast his eyes to the moon in the sky. It was a full moon. That explained it all he thought to himself with a chuckle.
"How did we end up like this...? He asked aloud but quietly. Another moment or two had passed and Dallas headed inside. Locking the door for the night.if anyone else was out there, they were on their own...
Remy had said she wanted everyone to stay in her apartment tonight, but with the growing size of this group, he doubted that was possible... Still, just because they were "home" so to speak, didn't meant they should let their guards down completely. He'd take first watch.
Lily stepped out of the way on the staircase so Kimberly could go up, and then went down to where June was.
“We need to talk.”
Lily and June went up to the second floor, and Lily picked out another empty apartment just so the two could have some time alone to talk. Before June could say anything, Lily gave her a hug.
“I've missed you so much!”
“I've missed you, too. Dallas told me everything that happened. How are you holding up?”
“As well as someone in this world can hold up. A little better now that I know you're alive. Are any of the others with you?”
“No. I was hoping more than just Dallas was with you.”
“I was afraid of that. Just as well, first thing tomorrow maybe we can talk Dallas out of leaving these guys behind and go look for the others.”
“Lily...”
“Don't Lily me! You heard it from Dallas, these people are nuts!”
“You can't blame them because things got out of hand.”
“Out of hand? These people were being chased by a crazy person, and their so called 'leader' ran up to him with a fucking bat! Dallas hasn't been with the group for barely a minute and he had to hold the slack because Goldilocks wasn't doing a damn thing, but now that we're in her 'apartment' and everything has settled down she's more than happy to tell everyone what to do. For fuck sake they were taking a selfie with a fucking walker!”
“Oh, wow, they were trying to have fun in a fucked up world, those bastards!” June said sarcastically.
“Are you being serious, right now?”
“Look, I don't know what your issue with Remy is, but the way I see it, they have shelter, they have food, they have supplies, and we have nothing if we set off on our own, and if you continue like you are now, you're going to get kicked out!”
“Good.”
“Good? Good!? Being thrown to the wolves is good?”
“We'll have a better shot on our own than with these idiots!”
“We?”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
“It means it's unfair to both Dallas and I if you make us have to choose between you, and the people with the fucking food! Why don't you think about someone other than yourself for a change, and suck it up!”
Lily was speechless. Was this the same, soft spoken June she knew from childhood? She was about to turn around and storm into the bedroom before June grabbed her shoulder.
“Lily, please. I don't want anything bad to happen to you. Just come up with the rest of us. It's only for one night. Please!”
Lily growled, and grunted, and made other unpleasing noises, but ultimately caved to the wish of her friend and followed June up to Remy's apartment right before Dallas locked it up.
“There's an extra bathroom you can use over there to take a quick shower.”
Lily only gave June an irritable look before quietly sulking off into the spare bathroom and locking the door behind her.
“It's going to be a long night,” she mumbled, grabbing another glass of wine.
Luca felt a tinge as Remy said she'd take a bullet for him. Would he do the same for her? It was difficult to say. He'd like to think he would, but when it came down to it, doing so may prove more difficult. She said he wasn't that man anymore, and that was true in certain respects. But deep down, when the going got tough, would he take a bullet for her? Thinking about it would do Luca no good. If it ever happened, god forbid, he'd find out. He couldn't dedicate too much thought to it, though, as Remy pressed her lips to his. Instead of the brief moment of shock and surprise, Luca's eyes closed immediately as he felt her lips on his. It was more organic, less shocking. It felt more...right. More right than ever. Maybe he was tired. Maybe he was developing greater feelings.
Probably both.
It was only then he spoke. "I did what I did. I can't run from it. Remy...I killed innocent--shit, you know what I did. Friends of a guy who traveled with us. I can't atone for it. I can't undo it. And it..." Luca inhaled sharply, curbing his self-directed frustration. "It haunts me. Funny as it sounds. Haunts me like a ghost. All I can do now is try to be a better man, and I have been trying."
Before Luca knew it, Remy was on his lap and they were on the bed. He chuckled, feeling awkward at first, but the feeling quickly went away. Despite it being a relatively sexual position, it didn't feel that way, not in that moment. It just felt organic, like the kiss. It felt right. "More people, I used to think it was a bad thing, but it's not always. We got good people. Dallas, Andrei. Useful. Anthony's a good guy, but annoying. We got some new arrivals, right? A woman, two men? A little girl, I saw. I trust Dallas' judgment that they're good people."
Luca couldn't help but laugh when Remy pointed out that Holly had compared him to Adolphus. "Add a few inches and a few decades, and yeah, there you go. I'm Adolphus. Funny, I never even really saw the man who'd been haunting you guys, except through the scope of a rifle. Saved Anthony's life, though. He'd been following all of us for so long, but he and i never even met face to face. Maybe a good thing. If I looked into someone like that's eyes, I don't know, maybe they'd bring out who I used to be. But...I'm not him. I'm not. And I'll prove it."
He paused, not knowing what to say next, but thankfully Remy brought up the shower. "Haven't showered since Bear Lake. Sounds real nice."
Post by Remy LaCroix on Sept 3, 2015 7:38:57 GMT -5
Luca's past was getting to him. Was he actually feeling guilty about what he did? She knew it had been building...it had to have been. Ever since Texas, when he told her about the things he did, it had to have been building. There was a reason he told her. He wanted forgiveness from someone, anyone. She told him that was between him and God.
She let him talk but his words about Adolphus struck her. They made her heart sink that he agreed with Holly and Andrei. No, he was nothing like that crazy old bastard. Adolphus had an agenda. Luca was just trying to survive. She wanted to yell at him so he would hear her loud and clear, but old habits were hard to break. Instead, she clammed up, as always, and just kept it inside. Just as she had told him to tell her anything and that meant even if that was a disagreement, she couldn't abide by her own words.
She stepped into the shower feeling the warm spray dousing her hair. She couldn't remember all the toiletries she had left behind in the chaos that ensued when it came time to leave, but at least there was shampoo. Thinking back, she remembered shopping a week prior to her life turning upside down, glued to her microscope and spending ten to twelve hours a day trying to figure out what all this was, calling the CDC and making more reports. There was soap in the soap dish and a couple of razors on the ledge by the frosted window. That's all she could ask for.
When he stepped in behind her, she allowed room for him to join and smirked.
"Two naked guys in one day. Can't say I've ever had that happen before."
He chuckled, brushing off the fact she accidentally joined Dallas in the shower before she addressed what he said.
"Luca, you ain't Adolphus. You don't know what he said to me. What he did. He was evil but thought he was doing good. What you did? Yea, it was wrong. Yea, it was evil too but at least you recognize that. At least you want to atone for it. Please don't make me second guess what you are. Please. I know you've been tryin to be a better man but are you doing it for me or are you doing it for you? That's the question you need to ask yourself. What changed?"
No, she wouldn't. She would stand by her convictions that he was here to help. To protect. To be a good guy, whatever that meant anymore. She grabbed the soap to wash down but turned back to him. If they didn't take advantage of this moment alone, she's not sure when it would happen again. It was like having children...carpe minutam...only with them, it was a house full of people that needed a leader. As she pressed the soap against his chest, she started to wash away the dirt, the sweat and the buildup from travel while speaking softly as if in confessional.
"I ain't never killed a living person, Luca. Only walkers. Hell, I don't even know how to use a gun. Even I'm surprised I'm still alive."
Her voice barely rose above the sound of the water. Her fear was that someone would hear her say that and take full advantage of pushing her to the point where she had to. Maybe Luca saw that fear in her eyes as she said that, even though they both knew one day she would have to. Maybe he wanted to make her feel better about that, or maybe it was his own instincts that took over as he pressed into her against the cold tiles. She wouldn't stop him. Carpe minutam.

Sam nodded hearing Damon's words," food sounds good, and maybe some sleep, will you sleep with me in the loving room?" She followed him up the stairs, but didn't put her gun away and she held onto his hand.
Once they were back in the apartment , she let go of his hand. She sat the gun on the counter and started moving stuff. She locked and dead bolted the door. She moved the stand from the hall in front of it and a couple chairs from the kitchen.

After awhile, Candy had gotten the toaster back together in three differently sized conglomerations. It was far easier to take apart then put back together. This would be more like a jigsaw puzzle that she stopped and came back to a few times before she had a complete toaster again. A project to keep her busy for at least two or three days, a week tops. If these strangers could be trusted, and were kind enough to let her stay...
Running into an impasse with her toaster puzzle, she set the parts and three assembled pieces neatly onto an end table. Taking the pad and paper, she went to pass the night with a different kind of puzzle:
Candy filled a half page with other quadratic equations with complex roots and a graphing a couple of them as vectors on a rough set of axes. One x-axis and one imaginary axis. Not that she'd ever get to put this kind of math to use now, or go on to university someday to pursue her in it. She had developed a few side applications of her skills as mathematical prodigy that were useful in the horrible new world, but pure math was still one of her joys. Even lost n the cracks of Florida's foster care system, she had picked up plenty.
In the middle of setting up her next equation, she saw the partly eaten bit of meat she had left on the table. She glanced to Flopsy, her terrycloth rabbit. ”Carl.”
Sticking the pen in the top of the notepad, she slung Flopsy over her shoulder, and headed over to the table. She searched the kitchen, and found a ziploc of either tongue depressors or popsicle sticks. Candy wasn't sure which.
Now that she was clean, she was averse to touching the raw meat with her bare hand. Candy found a dish towel and spoon to borrow too. Wrapping the partly eaten meat up in the towel, she found a dead houseplant in one corner. Candy knelt down and set Flopsy beside her. She wrote 'Carl' out on one of the popsicle sticks. After clearing away cobwebs and dead leaves from the potting soil, she began to dig a hole with the spoon.

After locking up the front door for the last time, Dallas headed up the stairs to the apartment. The climb seemed longer than the three floors really were as he had a lot on his mind. Something was off... But he had no idea what, or even why he felt that way.
Once inside the apartment, he noticed that the people here were drinking... Looked as if Dallas was staying up all night to pull watch duty. He could only hope they had coffee in here. He noticed that Candy was off in the corner playing in a flower pot. He saw her dress, it was dirty... And that was putting it nicely. She needed something clean. He wondered if Remy would have a shirt or something. For tonight for this girl to wear at least.
He walked over to her and kneeled down. "What you up to Candy?" Truth be told he had no idea that the piece of raw meat was once a living person. But that knowledge would likely not go over well with the masses here. Once he found out the answer he would head to the kitchen in search of coffee. This was going to be. Long night, he was going to need the extra kick.
He found a very cheap brand of coffee. This woman clearly had no taste when it came to the stuff. He found what he needed and started the pot. He continued to look through some of the cabinets, but what he was searching for came up empty.
Why did she drink this shitty coffee black? He let out a sigh and headed out into the living room. The man in the cowboy hat was there. Someone had said the trailer outside was his. It was worth a shot. He walked over to the man. "Hey, I was just wondering if you had sugar or creamer in that trailer of yours by chance?" It then dawned on him that they had not actually met each other yet. "Forgive me... My name's Dallas." He held out his hand to give a hand shake to the man. If he didn't have anything in his truck out there, Dallas' next plan would be to go bother the new neighbor lady. Maybe she had something he could use. He hadn't exactly gone through her shit after all. He still needed to get something for Candy to wear. If nothing else... Just for tonight.
With all the people coming in and out it was hard to keep track of them all. Smokey didn't really pay attention to any of them. He wondered where the blonde who originally introduced him went. Tipping his hat down he sunk deeper into his seat and kicked his feet up.
A man approached him and Smokey tipped up his hat. The man spoke about sugar or something, asking if he had any. "Sorry pal. Don't have any. I like my coffee block. I may have some irish creamers in the box I brought up. If you catch what I mean."
The man said his name and offered a hand shake. Smokey shook it. "Nice to meet yah Dallas. Name is Smokey. Didn't see you earlier. Were you down finding out what that banging is?"
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
