"Yeah, I just joined today actually." Donavan said as he and Christian made their way through Sunrise. He turned to Christian, "Yeah I drove trucks before all this, and as you probably figured out.." He held up he whiskey jar. "I'm also a moonshiner." Donavan chuckled with amusement as he said; "You would be surprised how rich you get when you're able to make alcohol, most of the stuff in my rig I got from trading whiskey." Donavan laughed. "One time I got two m4's and a case of ammo for about twelve jars of whiskey."
Donavan approached the house when he heard Christian say that he would catch up. "Alright just don't take too long." He said as he headed to the house but stopped and turned towards Christian. "Hey um, between you and me, I don't like how quickly they trusted us, I mean I'm not complaining but when you're on the road you tend to be really cautious , they haven't done anything to make me believe that they're not good people but if you see anything fishy just let me know, ok?" With that Donavan turned and entered the house and upon seeing Lila and the others, raised the jar of whiskey and the drinking glasses saying "Who wants a drink?"

Clara sat on the bed and let her feet sway back and forth, A smile firmly planted on her face as she watched the Lila talk to Thomas across the way, At the mention of water Clara took notice of the dryness that had started to bug her throat a while ago that she had managed to ignore up to this point out of the commotion that had been going on. "Can I have some too?" she asked Lila as she turned to walk out of the room.
Hearing Thomas speak to her Clara shifted her gaze to meet his. "Where'd I come from? Well, The woods I guess." she responded as she brought her hand up to grip the back of her neck as a small chuckle sounded. "But yea, I hunt. Greg, My caretaker taught me over the last year or so. That was after... Nevermind. Thats depressing to think about." she shook her head in an attempt to shake the thought of her family from her mind. "He died. About three weeks ago. I got lonely and started walking, Saw this place." she admitted as she heard him ask about the Sean guy that Lila had mentioned. She let her hand fall from her neck and return to her lap with her legs still swaying she looked up at the man. "You know? I don't know.. I hope, Meeting the boss man would be cool. At least make it a feel a little more personal. You know?" After a brief pause as she thought about the mans statement about the place being a big target she looked up from her lap once more before answering. "Big target? I wouldn't know to be honest, This is the biggest place I've been to in the last three years or so, I mostly stayed on the road before I met Greg, After that I stayed in a cabin."
Turning to see Lila emerge from the other room again with the two cups of water Clara reached out and took the cup from her hand "Thank you mam." she responded before she tipped the cup up and downed the water as fast as she could manage before handing it back to her. "Hey boss lady? If you want you can use these for dinner, I can skin them and prep them if you need me too." she said as she held the rabbits for her to take. Releasing her grip from them after she had Clara nodded in agreement as she scooted up slightly and leaned back, feeling the cool pillow against her head, Something she hadn't experienced in a very long time. She would lay there with a broad smile planted firmly on her face.

Lila leaned against the door way as Thomas spoke, crossing her arms across her chest as he seemed to question everything that was happening, decision-wise in Sunrise. She frowned a bit and looked at Clara before looking back at Thomas as she tilted her head. “You’ll have to take that up with Sean. Not sure how kindly he’d take to someone saying he makes bad decisions.” She looked back over her shoulder guessing the doc really was in another house. “Honestly, you’re pretty darn lucky your brother found us and even more lucky that we let you in. We ain’t had many problems here.”
She pushed away from the door to let down a few more shades as the sun continued to go down. “This place? It’s safe and we made it that way. Someone threatens us and they’re gone. Let’s just hope none of you newcomers do that.” She looked back at him with a wary glance. Clara seemed harmless enough but Thomas, apparently, wanted to plant that seed of doubt. “We ain’t heartless…not like outsiders. There’s still good people left in this world and this is a place for them to be. New ..or not new.”
She watched as Clara downed the water, speaking about Sean and calling her boss lady. “Just call me Lila, okay?”
The girl offered up the rabbits for dinner, which she knew would make a pretty good meal, despite the fact they were a bit lean. It seemed like everything was hungry out there except the birds but they were almost impossible to hunt with bow and arrow and she didn’t want to waste her ammo on them. “If you want to contribute, you can skin them for dinner. I’ll mix them up with some potatoes. We found a wild patch behind one of the houses in this old neighborhood.”
She looked back at Thomas, about to ask how he could contribute, but she remembered what Christian said. They would be on their merry way as soon as Thomas was able. “You and your brother are welcomed to eat too, Thomas. But you really need to rest. At least stay the night and make sure there’s nothing seriously wrong with you.”
She went into a small bathroom off to the side, rummaging around a bit until she could find some bandages that were probably too big for the cut on his head. When she went back to him to take care of that cut, she heard the door open and Donavan came in, offering drink.
“Pour some of that moonshine into a bowl for me, Donavan. I can clean up this cut on his head with it.” She didn’t mean to sound like she was going to put his booze to waste, so she quickly followed up.
“And pour me a shot too. None for the kid though.” She went behind Thomas, tilting his head forward so she could take a look at the injuries. She wasn't a doctor either, but she could put a bandage on his head.
"I plan to keep it that way," Thomas said calmly. "I don't want to cause trouble, neither does Christian. We may not act like it, but we're greatful for letting us in. Letting us stay the night. Would feel better if I knew where my weapons were being held, but I understand. Have to keep you and your people safe. Not matter the cost. As for this Sean if he is a leader he should be here with the new people. Not risk his people. He needs a thorough interview process, to weed out those who aren't fit to stay. Trust me, get one bad egg and the whole basket becomes corrupt."
Thomas looked at the girl. "Glad we came from the same place. Bunch of woodland folk, hunting and surviving. Maybe we let these towns people in on how to live out there." He smirked and leaned back, giving a smile to Lila tomshow he was joking. "I mean between you and me they look a little soft from all the luxuries of walls and beds." He smirked again and laughed.
"Yeah Lila, to bad there's more bad people out there than there is good. Hell I'm probably not the nicest person. I've killed people to get by. Bandits, raiders, more than I can count. Before all this I killed someone for attacking me on the road I'd be locked up for life. Bad or not, they'd throw away the key. Now it's hard to judge who deserves to get locked up and who doesn't."
He shook his head. "You may think you're good people. But if you killed to keep your people alive, you're not good people. No one is anymore. Not me, not you, not even the little girl over there. Who knows, maybe you need some bad people to keep going. Ones who can get the job done. The good people all died out, those who are left count on others like me and you."
Thomas nodded. "I can't speak for Christian, but I'll pass on a meal for now. We'all stay the night if you let us. Don't need a bed a floor would do, long as we have a roof over our heads everything should be fine. No harm in staying one night. I agree, rest up, get a good nights rest. Haven't had one in a long time."
He looked at the door as Donovan came in. "None for me, that shit makes you go blind," he said with a laugh. "Best to keep a clear head for this all. Don't want to get fucked up on you more than I am." He was okay with it being used to clean his wounds thoguh. He didn't want them to become infected at this rate. "Doesn't hurt to sterilize though."
When Lila asked for a shot Thomas shook his head. "You going to clean this wound, bandage me up. You only take that shot after you do all that." As she titled his head he looked up at her. His head was just cut from where it hit the dash. A small wound but it mostly stopped bleeding now. It would heal overtime, and a bandage over it would help.
"I said I can fix it myself if you don't want to. Don't think it will need stitches, not torn open that deeep or that wide."
"Yeah I won't be log," Christian said to Donovan, watching him disappear to the house. He looked up at the windmill beside it, the wind spinning the wheel just a little bit. Risky choice of power, they weren't very big. Probably made enough juice to keep a gerator going in emergencies. An industrial one would be more ideal, but a bitch to set up and take down.
There was also the risk of it breaking. A blade broke off from this it would sever a limb, or worse. It looked rickety, not something professionally made. They could use an engineer. The wall looked stable, solid brick. In time it would decay though, he hoped that this Sean had a plan for when they did. More bricks and mortar to fix the wounds. The gate was steel, but if the first ones opened, a truck could ram it. One likes Donovans could clear both of them.
They weren't at risk of people climbing over. The guards would see something before the person could cut the wire. Then again a simple blanket overtop, or getting a cut a bit would work. If someone really wanted over they would get over. That was easy to see. He looked at the guard towers. They seemed sturdy, again he could tell an engineer hadn't built them. Only one way up, a ladder.
Stairs would be easier in emergency. Ladders are dangerous, fall that high would break bones. In a fight, or panic, people would get hurt. They also knocked them down the person up there would be fucked. Why a staircase would be better. Didn't have to be much, but it would easier to get up and down when needed.
He looked at the crops as he went by. They had food, that was good. No water source was a bit concerning. Eventually what ever water coming to those houses would dry up. If they alreayd hadn't. Vegitables mostly, good energy. Breeding animals would be better, rabbits, chickens, pigs the best of all. Eventually they would need protein. Good thing the forests provided hunting.
Christian saw a lady come out of one of the houses. She was young, carrying a basket of food. "Hey, wait up," he yelled as he jogged to her. "Hey Lila just wanted me to bring the supplies Donovan and I found. Said we were supposedly to put them with the rest. Wanted to leave them out the front door. I'm new here. But I wanted to help out where I can. I'm garetful for you all letting me in. My family and I don't have much. Just my brother and my little girl."
He smiled, trying to be genuine as the other girl spoke. "Sean keeps all the supplies in the basement of his house. Leave them out front of there." She hurried off to another house and Christian waved.
"Thank you. Much appreciated." He then headed toward the house she pointed to. It was like the others, no doubt locked up. Kept the supplies in the basement. Getting close her lowered toward a basement window. Looking in he could see a few supplies, along with some weapons. Keeping all the supplies in one place was foolish. This house went up, it would be the end of them. At less than he knew where the guns were kept, minus the ones that were stashed frommthe new comers. Those were all by the gate. Not the safest, first to go. But exp edible as they weren't the groups.
Standing up he continued along the wall of the stronghold, looking to see for any weakness or spot to get in and out.

Donavan poured some of the moonshine into a small bowl and handed it to Lila so she could clean Thomas' wound, then proceeded to pour shots for himself, Thomas, Lila and Christian for when he got back as he listened to Thomas talk about how there is no good people left. "I have to disagree with you on that Thomas." He said. "It's not the kill that makes you bad, it's why you do it, I mean, I've had to kill to survive so many times I've lost count, moments like that don't make you a bad person, it's when you're unnecessarily cruel with it that makes you a bad person."
Donavan handed Lila and Thomas their drinks than continued. "Lets take what happened today for example, if we were bad people, we wouldn't have helped you and Christian, we would've killed both of you and taken your stuff, so it's not that there's no more good people in the world, there's just a lot of people with a very dominate bad side."
Donovan downed his drink and poured himself another. "It's not the kill that makes you bad." Donavan said as he set down his drink drawing a shaky breath as dark memories flashed through his mind causing his voice to shake as he said; "Cruelty is what does that."

Clara laid there, Still relishing in the feeling of the sheets underneath her body as she listened to Lila and Thomas talk for a moment before she heard Lila begin to speak to her again. "Yes sir madam Lila sir." Clara responded as she brought her hand to her forehead giving the woman a goofy half salute. "I.. I sorta need my knife to do that though." She then added as she began to prop the pillow against the bed frame and sat herself against it before laying the rabbits next to her. "I know you said no weapons until tomorrow but can I get my knife to do it with?" She asked as she cocked her neck to the side and shot the woman a goofy smile.
Hearing the door open Clara's eyes shot to the entryway that was within view through the sun-room door. Oh, Its the guy from the gate. Donny or something like that? She mentally reminded herself before quickly letting her hand raise in a wave to the man. Seeing he had something in his hand she couldn't help but let her curiosity peek. "What's that?" she asked no one in particular as he approached the room as Lila went back through the door at the same time.
Hearing Lila mention moonshine as she reentered the room Clara tilted her head as she let her hand come to scratch the top of her head, ruffling her hair slightly as she attempted to figure out what moonshine was. "MOOOnn SHIInne" she said, elongating each word to draw emphasis to them. Hearing Lila asked Donny to pour some into a bowl to clean a wound finally let Clara put two and two together. "AH! It's alcohol isn't it." she let out in a hushed shout and she clinched a fist and brought it down to meet her other open hand. "That 'grown up' drink Greg always talked about. Why's it so bad anyway?" she asked, Still confused. Greg had refused to tell her anything about the drink, Just that he used to love drinking it before the world ended and that 'It's not something a young lass like herself should concern herself with'. Watching Donny pour a handful of glasses for the grown up, As she heard Lila say none for 'the kid' Clara couldn't help but feel slightly annoyed at the fact that they had just called her a kid. "I'm not..." She started before biting her tongue at the thought of the gates slamming with her outside them shot across her mind. "Nevermind, It was nothing." she corrected with a nervous smile on her face as she let her eyes squeeze shut. Stupid. Don't get yourself kicked out over something like that. It's fine. Clara reminded herself before turning her attention to Thomas once more.
"I'm grateful too. Thanks for letting me in as well." Clara added after Thomas had finished his first sentence but before he started the next. Hearing the man speak to her about being woodland she gave the man a shy little smile before she brought her hand back up to the back of her neck. "Maybe, But it's lonely out in the woods. Ya know? At least.. At least people mean you won't get lonely. I mean you had you're brother but I.. Well, Things happened." She finished before letting her head fall for a moment as she tried to shove the thoughts of her sister, Mother and Greg out of her mind. Raising her head again she forced herself to smile as Thomas started to speak again.
The mans word's frightened Clara slightly, The thought of killing a living person was still a foreign concept to her, Having been hidden in a small hunting cabin deeper in the woods than most would try to venture she had been spared the act of conflict from anything but bitters and animals, She dug in her mind for a moment in a attempt to remember the final days of the first 'safe-zone' that her family and her had managed to find after losing her father. The flames, The gunshots, The growls of bitters, They echoed in her ears as the memory emerged in a fiery flash of light in her mind. quickly slamming her eyes shut she shook her head for a moment as she tried to shut the memory away again. "I haven't been in a place like this for about three years so I wouldn't know to be completely honest." She responded to no one in particular in a hushed tone before turning to watch Donny down his drink and start to pour another one. Stay happy Clara, You let the thoughts get to you and you'll get sad again, Don't let that happen. Smile.

"Your weapons are safe and you'll get them back in the morning." She looked over to Clara and nodded as she asked about getting her knife back to gut the rabbit. Maybe that wasn't such a good idea after all. "You know what? You should rest here. I'll have someone else take care of the rabbits for dinner. You caught them, why make you work more, right?" That seemed to justify the need to keep her weapons and it was true. They would take care of it.
As she looked down at Thomas she parted his hair and could see the scratch as bits of glass fell from his roots. She dusted them away with her fingertips as he spoke about bad guys. "You think I don't know that? I was on my own for a few years. I saw what happened out there. I've been through it too."
When Donavan came back with a little bowl of moonshine she looked around and saw a stack of hand towels neatly folded which would make sense for an infirmary. She dipped one in the alcohol and started to clean the wound. He was right, it wasn't bleeding but there was a nice, lingering scrape there. "This is probably going to sting." She dabbed it a few times as she agreed with Donavan about killing out of need, not out of want. "He's right, you know. Good people kill because it's what keeps us alive. Bad people kill because it makes them feel stronger."
She kept wiping away the dry blood that seemed soaked into his hair. She would let Donavan answer Clara about the definition of Moonshine. All she knew it was the worst kind of alcohol that would get you drunk after a few shots and she knew how she got when she got drunk. Being around Thomas would be a very bad idea. Maybe she would pass on that shot after all..or at least, take it and go back to her own house. Thomas was cute and had the physical looks that appealed to her.
Clara mentioned the name of a guy and instead of letting awkward silence get a stranglehold of them, she decided to find out a little more. "Who's Greg?" She kept cleaning until she believed all the blood was wiped up and the wound looked to be clean. Putting a band aid on the back of his head would be ridiculous and only pull out his hair when he tried to take it off. "All done. You're right, it ain't that bad, but you should rest."
She dropped the cloth to the corner of the room and went towards Donavan, taking the shot and hesitantly downing it as her eyes moved towards Thomas.
"Yeah but the difference between you and I is when I'm out there I'm looking for a raider to sink my bullet in. They may not have done anything to me, may have minded their own business. But people like that, don't deserve to be out there. Becuase they prayed on the weak and unprepared. They may not have crossed me, but any signs of being a raider and I burn there place to the ground and take out those who come out screaming. I right those wrongs, becuase a I can, becuase it's the right thing to do."
Thomas looked at Donovan. "Sparing someone doesn't make you good or bad. Not taking a life, don't mean you're good. I may kill. Hell I killed before this. I took fathers from their families, punk kids from their mothers. People oppose me, oppose doing the right thing, I kill them. Now I'm just allowed to. It's encouraged. Maybe you're right, that it's the motive behind it. But I don't take risks. If something doesn't sit right, it ain't right. I haven't taken an innocents life, but that's not saying I haven't broken a few bones to get my way."
He looked away. As Lila cleaned the wound he winced with the first contact. Human reaction to pull away from the brining of the alchohol in the wound. But he gritted his teeth and let her finish. "You think they just kill becuase it makes them stronger. Taking a life doesn't make you stronger, they kill because they can. Any raider out there isn't just getting off from the killing. They kill to get something, take what they want. You're just an obstacle in the way."
Looking back he sighed. "You say you've been through it, but I don't really think you have. You wouldn't have let us in so willingly if you did. Wouldn't be making a stranger supper and cleaning their wound. What if I would have turned on you, or what if Christian attacked Donovan out there. What would stop us from just killing as many of you as we could. You don't know us from a hole in the ground. You trust us, we showed no reason not to. But do you really know who we are. We weren't carrying standard hunting rifles, they were fully automatic, scopes, lights, double mags and and extended clips. They had straps and clips. You weren't even a little bit curious on how we got that. I'm glad you didn't. But if you've been through what I have, you wouldn't be letting ever Tom, Dick, and Harry in to you place. Trust isn't as easy as that."
He looked at her as she finished cleaning the wound. "Yeah, I'll rest. I'm typically not one to sit around. I like to be dong stuff, on the move. I like work, keep my brain going and my body moving. You can rest when you're dead, that's why they slap it on your tombstone and say it in their prayers. Little scrape like this, it's nothing."

A small smile crept across Donavan's face when he heard Thomas say that he looked for raiders to kill. "My group did the same thing, we would look for raiders to gun down, it got to the point that some people would call us the Roadside Butchers, Andrew always hated that name though, it made us sound like a bunch of homicidal maniacs." Donavan chuckled lightly. "You remind me so much of him, tough, tactical, not afraid to speak your mind, and not afraid to get what needs to be done taken care of, those were the reasons he was the leader of our group." Donavan listened Thomas when he began speaking about sparing and taking lives, talking about how he took fathers from families and punk sons from mothers. "I've done those same things Thomas so I have to agree with you on that, if someone gets in my way or they endanger the people I care about, they're dead, and like you said, I haven't taken an innocents life, but that doesn't mean I haven't broken a few bones to get my way."
"As for the trust thing, I'm sorry Lila but I gotta agree with him on that too, I mean you've only met me today and not only did you agree to go to my rig with me alone, which by the way it could easily punch through the gates on this place, I'm also being treated as a full blown member of the place, not that I'm complaining but the speed that trust has been built worries me because all it takes is one bad guy to get in and a lot of good people are gonna die."
Post by Clara Hartmann on May 24, 2017 1:21:34 GMT -5
Clara gave Lila a small shrug after hearing Lila change her mind on the matter of her prepping the rabbits. "Up to you Lila boss lady." she said with a shrug before hearing her question about Greg. "Greg? Well, He was my caretaker. My step dad of sorts" she returned with a smile and another shrug. She didn't know how else to put it, He wasn't her father or anything but he had been like one to her for the last few years. "He was the guy that found me after I passed out from looking for my sister..." She finished in a somber tone before promptly sliding back down and laying with her back facing the wall with her back towards the adults in the room as the two men started to talk.
Clara laid there and listening for a while after that, The words the two men had said had sent a shiver of fear down her spine as she kept her eyes glued to the wall. They.. They kill living people?!? She mentally questioned as she stared at the wall of the sun-room in shock. I mean, Bitters are one thing but... But people?? Why? She questioned to herself once more. Clara had been tucked away from the world for the last two years in that small cabin, Bitters wandered that far in occasionally but never bandits, There wasn't anything out there but tree's and sky so the idea of raiders and bandits was as foreign a concept to her as quantum mechanics was to most. It's okay, You're just a kid anyway, Why would they hurt a kid? And you aren't a bandit.. Deep breaths Clara, Deep breaths and keep smiling, Happy is key. She repeated to herself as she continued to listen to Thomas talk about what he'd done.
The second jolt of fear came as she heard Donny chime in. The man that had been so nice to her, Had a murderous past as well? Even though they both said that they never harmed innocents the last part of 'but that doesn't mean I haven't broken a few bones to get my way.' stuck in her mind, She would try her best from now on to stay out of the two's way. The two did make some good points in her mind though, Even through the fear that came with their admittance of killing people. Staying safe is vital, Just... You don't go LOOKING for them! Why would I go hunting the people that killed my mom? That's just stupid, I'd die... Or worse.. Oh god... What if... What if that's what happened to Anna...

Lila watched Thomas as he spoke about taking raiders. Maybe he was doing the right thing, but he was playing God, in her mind. Not that she really minded. She had plenty of run-ins with raiders and none of them were good. What made her pipe up was him talking about killing before 'all this'.
"Wait, what do you mean? What did you use to do when there was still law around?"
She felt her hand reach down by her side as if she had to reach for her gun to protect herself. She knew that was just an instinct when her hackles were raised and somehow she went back on alert. But she knew Sean, when he finally came around, would handle all this. It made her wonder if she made a mistake with her kindness.
"Look, my dad owned a gun store. I grew up in it and learned everything I could about them which is why I'm such a good shot. But ain't nobody asking me how I learned how to do that, why would I ask about where you got your guns? Ain't none of my business where you got them." She looked over to Donavan after that. "I ain't never said I trusted any of you I let in but I believe in giving people a chance. If you want to blow that chance, I won't think twice about turning you out the gate."
She frowned as Donavan spoke about her going back to the rig with him and she couldn't help but let out a bit of an exhausted chuckled, taking the last of the drops of the moonshine from the last before leaving it on the counter. "You think I can't take care of myself? Why? Because I'm some little blonde girl that's half your size? Ya'll don't know shit about me." She was feeling herself getting all riled up as Clara was trying to talk about who Greg was. The girl had gone silent and she didn't want to leave her alone with them.
"Clara, why don't you come with me. You can watch us skin the rabbits, make sure we're doing it right." It was more of an excuse to get her to a safer spot. If Thomas and Donavan wanted to force her to question her decision to bring them in, then she would make sure they were going to be guarded. And Christian was now missing.

Hearing Lila start to speak to the men again Clara perked up once more to listen to what was being said. Hearing her tell her to come with her her sent a wave of semi relief to wash over her. "Yes mam." she said as she quickly hoped up from the bed. As long as I can stay away from these guys I'll be fine. She reassured herself as she quickly shuffled her way past the two of them and took up a position behind Lila near the door to the other room. "I'll make sure they're skinned to the best of my abilities." She assured her in her best attempt at a voice that hid her nervousness that the two men had caused.
"I'll go wait in here." She said before moving to the other room and took a seat on one of the chairs. Don't worry Clara, Just look at it this way. If they only kill raiders and bandits then you have nothing to worry about. She assured herself mentally as she began glancing around the room at the door leading back outside and the small amount of clutter scattered around. Turning back to look into the sun-room she couldn't see much other than the back of Lila, her hand slightly closer to her weapon it seemed. I didn't pick the wrong place to look for friends I hope. No. There are some good people here, Look at Lila for example. She seems nice. Clara thought before bringing her head to face straight ahead again and began to wait for Lila to come get her. reminding herself that she'll get through this, Everything is going to be alright.
"Donovan has a point. Here I thought he was just as trusted of a member as you were. Here he's saying he's as new as me and Christian. Probably hasn't even gotten his weapons back and you trust him to come and go. Not safe. How do you know we're all not from the same place. You just let three of us, and right now that's looking like a lot more numbers than just you and the sniper up there. Have to think this through." Thomas shook his head. "I mean where the hell is your leader. He doesn't even pop his head up, and you're brining in strangers. Wasting medical supplies, brining what could be a truck full of men. You offer them soup. You haven't spent a single god dam minute out side those walls if you're that gullible. Naive and unprepared. Lucky we're good guys."
He looked at her. "I was military, saw my fair share of fighting. Then I worked security, had to put a couple people down every now and then. You get a punk rushing you that bullet just goes right on through. Payment is payment sweetheart." He smirked, "look at now, ammo and resources, keep the world going round."
Thomas moved to the edge of the bed. "Becuase while you carry a peashooter and a dam gun every run of the mill fucker can by me and my brother are carrying military grade weapons. They ain't shotguns and rifles. Precision rounds and high caliber clips. Our truck had enough munitions to supply a god dam platoon. Enough fire power to cover twice as many people in this little Fort. You may know how to shoot, but do you know how to kill. That's the question. Anybody can shoot, Clara over there can shoot a gun twice her size. Don't mean she is going to hit the broad side of a barn."
Thomas stood up. "You want to kick us out, then do it. I noticed a dozen ways to get in just from the front step. What's stopping someone else from doing the same. This place, it's not secure. I don't want to see it trampled and run over. I appreciate the help but jeez, look at you. You're so insecure because you don't have a dick and your hair is blonde. I don't doubt you can shoot or protect this place and yourself. But what if raiders show up. What if an army of bandits show up, the shit out there. We came across one group, hundred men, all looking to take every woman and child as their prisoner. Another, running slave runs up and down the west coast."
He shook his head. "It's been four years and you're still treating this place like it got started yesterday. There people fighting to survive and freezing their ass off every night. Far as strongholds come this is a hole in the ground. Sure you got walls, can see that from the windows. But how many guns do you have? How many people?" She hadn't been out there, she only scratched the surface of out there.
"Why are you worried about Christian. Said you could handle yourself couldn't you." Though he was worried why his brother didn't come back either. He looked to Donovan, hoped he had an answer. "You're not scared are you, going to run in there and hide with the little girl." He shook his head, "I tell you, this place."

"Lila my intention isn't to belittle your decisions, nor is it to imply that you can't take care of yourself, I'm simply pointing out that some things might need some reconsideration such as giving back a newcomers weapons after twenty four hours." Donavan paused trying his best to choose his next sentences carefully. "Don't fuck this up Donny, it's been a long time since good people were willing to give you a chance."
Donavan thought before speaking again. "Look I'm not saying this to be a dick, I'm just trying to be helpful by pointing out potential dangers and by not sugar coating it, I've been to places like this with the same rules regarding weapons and newcomers, I watched them return weapons to some newcomers only to be slaughtered by them, they killed three men, four women, and seven children who were younger than Clara before I was able to put them down." Donavan paused to wipe away a tear from his eye. "I've seen way too many massacres, and I want to do everything I can to prevent that from happening to this place."
Donavan turned to Lila when she asked where Christian was. "He's out figuring out where to put the supplies from my rig, I sent him to do it but I'll go get him." Donavan quickly turned to Thomas. "And before you get on my ass about trusting him too quickly let me point out that he has little to gain and a lot to lose if he were to try anything, he's not stupid, he knows that if he were to try anything, you would be the first person targeted in an effort to make him stop, he wouldn't endanger you needlessly, that's how I know I can trust him with something like this, I'll be back." Donavan turned to exit the house pausing to talk to Clara. "I'm sorry I frightened you Clara, I only said what I did because its best to hide nothing from good people, it makes it easier for them to figure out if people like me are fit to stay in a place like this." Donavan opened the door out of the house. "You have nothing to fear from me kiddo, I don't hurt kids, never have and never will." Donavan then left the house running in the direction Christian went and looked around until he found him.
"Hey Christian, the others want you, I haven't told them about the car yet, I wanted to wait for you to be there since it involves you, and while we're our way there tell me, did you find anything I need to worry about?"

Lila stopped when Thomas said she was carrying a pea shooter. She was on her way to go grab a few guys to keep an eye not just on Thomas, but on Donavan now too since doubt was thrown right into her mind. She wanted Sean to take over this conversation but when he spoke about his bigger, badder guns, she went right back over to Thomas with a smirk. Her hands came to her hips as she looked up at him after he stood up.
"You wanna go? You can go. But maybe I'll keep all them guns of yours. How's that for a deal?"
She got what he was saying and she knew there were holes in the fence, which was something she was trying to fix. She turned to look at Donavan as he chimed in and tried to smooth things over with the story about some raiders that infiltrated and murdered the innocent. "So maybe that's the solution then. We take all your weapons. End of story." She knew Sean would never go for that as everyone needed to be armed around here, especially when they needed to go on supply runs.
"Look, you think we're just sitting in here doing nothing? You think we're just sitting in our rocking chairs, drinkin lemonade and hoping for the best? No, it ain't like that. We're working to make this a better place but we're in the middle of nowhere and all the Home Depots seem to be closed these days."
She watched as Donavan went to go get Thomas' brother leaving her and Clara alone with Thomas. Maybe she shouldn't leave him all alone. She worried he would try something now, even though he said he didn't want to see anything happen to this place. He was confusing her now with her own morales. She didn't know if she would stay and fight or run and save her own skin.
"Look, can we just stop now? You need to talk to Sean. He's in charge here. I fix the fence. I get supplies. I shoot when I gotta shoot. I bring people in who are knocked out from accidents." She looked directly at him as she said that. "You can argue with him, okay?"

Clara sat with her body facing slightly away from the door leading into the sun-room as she continued to listen to the bits and pieces of the conversation she could hear "I didn't run and hide.. I was told to come in here." she mumbled to herself as she continued to listen and heard Donny pip up about the potential dangers this place had. Danger? Pfft. Walls are super tall, How can those break. I bet they're the strongest walls around. she thought as she listened to him finish.
The sound of footsteps approach her from the room with the commotion. Hearing Donny apologize about scaring her as he began to pass led Clara to jerk her head to look at him and force a smile. "Wh..What? Pfft... You didn't scare me. Nah, You're good man..." she said in a shaky voice, all the while having a forced looking smile on her face. In reality the mans words terrified her and it showed in her speech. Not that Clara wanted to admit, Watching him begin to walk off she mumbled to herself again. "You're okay Clara, He said he doesn't harm kids and he called you Kiddo. Deep breaths."
Watching the door to the outside world close again Clara slowly let her smile fade as she felt sadness inter her mind; More over the thought that she might have chosen the wrong place to look for friends than anything but the thoughts of being in danger from more than just the bitters now began to get to her. God, I hope I didn't choose the wrong place to stay.. Just.. Just keep smiling, Keep smiling and you'll be fine. She repeated to herself mentally before turning to face the sun-room again as she heard Lila begin to talk. "You seem nice enough. I wanna be friends."
Christian hold the voice of the man he was with and stepped away from the house. He turned to Donovan with a smile. "Thank you for that. Last thing I want is you getting In shit for something I did. I'll let them know the car was smashed and that the supplies were lost." He looked back at the houses. He had though he saw someone inside, but he couldn't be sure. He didn't know if he was being watched or not. It was to hard to tell.
"I noticed they keep all their supplies in that building. Least that's what one of the people I met said. Means the leader has control of it all. He controls the food and ammo. I don't know about you, but those walls look just as hard to get out as they do in. This leader is starting to sound like a warden more than a person in charge. We'll have to see if they lock us up or not. For all we know this Sean had a ditator mentality."
He rubbed his jaw and looked at Donovan. "I still don't trust this, and I'm sure my brother doesn't either. We've been in some bad stronghold, this is starting to look like one of them. You meet Sean? You know what type of guy he is? I've seem some barbaric rulers, make ghenis khan look like peewee herman."
Christian moved backinsode to where his brother and the girls were. "Here and accounted for mam," he said as he came up behind Lila with a smirk. "That moonshine I smell. You didn't go a crack a new bottle without me did you Donny." He smiled and leaned against the table. "The supplies were all gone from the SUV. You were right blondy someone made off with them. You got raider problems around here?"
He looked to his brother and gave a nod, "maybe we could track them down, get it back along with whatever else they stole. Raiders aren't a joke. They mean business."
"Don't work like that," Thomas said shaking his head. "You take our guns and you're starting a war that you will not win. I don't care what kind of fire power you have here, you cross us and you will three times as much." He didn't think they had much anyway. Only a few people in the tower, even her gun wasn't that impressive. "That's a really bad choice for you."
"You take all out guns you better shoot us with them right now, cause otherwise you and your farm folkmarent walking away." He smiled. "I mean your guards aren't exactly patrolling the walls. You're the only one I've seen with a gun. You look like you're the only one who knows how to use one. Let's hope we don't get to see who's the better shot." He looked out the window to where Donovan left. Stepping back he smiled.
"You're right, I do think that. From what I've seen you're not exactly scrounging for supplies. You got comforts and stuff you don't need. Moonshine, water, got power. Over half the people left don't have that. Sipping lemonade and cozy beds are the only thing that comes next." He shook his head. "I'm sure you're strong folk. But until I see otherwise. I'll keep my judgements where I see them. I don't see soldiers and fighting haters here. I see little girls and farmers. They don't do well against bandits and thieves."
Thomas looked at her. "Where is this Sean, maybe I'll go and see him if he won't come to me." He moved toward the door but stopped as it opened and Christian walked in with Donny. His brother was as casual was always, making a joke as he moved toward Lila. Thomas tensed and looked away, listening to what his brother said.
"What do you mean the supplies are gone," he said, anger in his voice. "You better hope we find them Christian. I'm done with you fuckng up." He looked away. "See Lila,Mathis was what I was getting at. Raiders and bandits. Hadn't even been a god dam hour and they picked our car clean like vultures. The highway is close, close enough Christian saw the place from here. Those raiders know where you are. Where you live."
