Abby stared out the window. Great! Now he thinks your crazy, you retard!
She shook her head and remained silent, figuring it best to not talk. He realized she thought he was gay, and he wasn't happy about it. Great! Now he was acting like twit. She shifted and faced him, her cheeks flushing a bit, "No...guys have never really been into me, thank you very much, and for your information, I am 22, and damn, it was a mistake!" she glared at him, "I just figured a guy that looked like you either had a wife , or girlfriend, hell a fuck buddy for all I care, but then you said no, and started talking about " she raised her hand and made air quotes, 'your friend', I assumed, alright....damn, don't be a drama queen about it." She turned back and but her back against the seat, falling into silence. Now she had done it. He was gonna ditch her, first chance he got, just like the last one.

Max just grunted and kept driving, awkward silence filling the car. He gripped the wheel tighter, his knuckles turning white. This girl had a lot of nerve, he wasn't gay. That's what he got for having friends.
"I can see why he left you," Max said angirly. He didn't know if he meant it, he jus knew it'd get to her.
"Listen I didn't mean that, I'm just pissed. He was friend, that's all. I didn't feel I need to tell you about every girl I boned," Max said, "some even during this sh!t."
Abby just sat there, she stared down at the map in her lap.
As he said he knew why the last guy ditched her, she felt a lump swell in her throat, "I..know." she said, in almost a whisper. As he said he didn't mean it ,she chewed on her bottom lip. Yes he did. She knew he did. He was mad, people always said shit like that when they were mad.
"It's ok, I don't blame you, you got some strange girl calling you queer, I get it...." she glanced at him and shrugged, "if you wanna put me out, I understand....it's ok." She started to fold the map, and leaned closer to him as she reached back to place it back in her bag, "I don't blame you." She spoke softly. She meant what she said. If he wanted her out, she would go and not make some crazy scene about it.

"I'm not kicking you out ar'ight," Max said, "we just got off on the wrong foot ar'ight." He looked at her. He didn't want her to leave, worst case scenario he could use her as bait or to get away.
"Alright so where were you before all this. Where are y'ah from," he asked, Feeling he was going to get a long answer. "How long are we travelling for? Till it's empty? Till we reach a new car? Or do you want to stop at a certain time?"
He looked at her bag, "what supplies do you have? If we are travelling together we should know what supplies we all have."
She stared at him, "Alright...um..maybe before dark. I...don't like being out when it's dark." She pulled her pack from the back seat and laid it on her lap. It was a large one, one she had since she was a teenager, a hiking backpack.
Abby unzipped and started going through things, "Um..2 blanket, first aid kit, 2 flashlights, some road flares, a hand full of power bars, some water bottles, change of clothes, and a pair of running shoes." She glanced over at him, "Maryland, somerset county, a town called Pocomoke, that's where I am from." Abby was just glad he hadn't put her out."Maybe we could find a shop, some building, some place safe, for the night?" She stared out the window, but mostly what she saw was trees. One of those gas, food , lodging , signs said 3 miles to the next exit, 'Should we see if we can get some gas? " she glanced at him, "What about you...you said we should know what we have, what do you have? Abby didn't tell him about the gun in her bag, or the bullets. She wasn't a good shot anyway, but she was leery of him knowing about it, just yet.

Max saw the sign she pointed out and Nodded at her. If they couldn't find gas they might at least be able to stay there the night. He continued the drive, the car in the middle of the road taking up both lanes at once. That way he could choose a side if need be. He had actually driven the opposite way on his bike, the same general rule applie then. He didn't expect to find anything at the gas station, but it was a worth a shot.
Hearing her list all he stuff he just smiled, at least they had water. "I have a can of beans, an empty camping propane tank, some cigarettes, smarties, and some moonshine," Max said, not feeling the need to list weapons, as she didn't, or clothes. He admitted he didn't have a lot, but the beans would last him till tonight. He could always find food, it was liquid that were hard to come by. "Do y'ah smoke? Or drink," he asked, "if so we can have both once we stop. If not I'll just have some." He didn't smoke, but it made for good trading if he met someone. "Might be some animals there, dog's pretty good, as is cat." He smirked but didn't laugh, he hadn't eaten either but he wanted to see how shed react.
Abby listened to him give his list, "So you have a sweet tooth, huh?" She pulled out a power bar, "these aren't terrible, I used to eat them all the time before a meet, for the protein." She shook her head when he asked if she smoked and drank, "No..I don't ...some of my friends did, but being in Track...I have tried a beer at a party, but ...that stuff tastes like piss." She grinned at him, 'though, I like the fruity drinks, came home sick once and learned that lesson." She held the power bar out to him, and when he mentioned eating cat and dog, she dropped it in his lap, yanking her hand back, her face showed her revulsion of the idea, "Really?" she looked green, like she was going to get sick at the thought of eating a pet. "I...know we gotta survive, but ..can we make that a worst case scenario." She started putting stuff back in her bag.

Max chuckled at her reaction, "I've never eaten dog. Idon't think I would. Just wanted your reaction." She said he had a sweet tooth, this wasn't something he'd ever thought of. He mostly took them cause they were something rare now a days. "I guess a sweet tooth if you mean alcohol that knocks you on your @ss," he laughed. "You're going to try this, you'll love it trust me." He grabbed the power bar from where she dropped, "thanks, I'll save it for later. Only eat if I'm hungry, it's waste otherwise." He tossed the bar on the dash and smiled. The stop was just up ahead. "Ready for this," he asked pulling off to the side of the road.
Abby sat and shook her head,"no....I shouldn't ,I get into trouble when I drink." She smiled at him,but didn't explain anymore. As he pulled off the road, she started taking deep breaths. She pulled a ponytail holder off her wrist and started to braid her hair. Her hands flew as she worked her hair quickly into a braid. It showed how often she must have done it. Abby fished out some bobbi pins from her jeans pocket and fixed her hair into a bun. Whole process to about two minutes."i used to wear my hair like this for track meets, figure its less for someone to grab ahold of." She leaned toward him as she reached back for her bat in the back seat," yea...ready as I am gonna be." She smiled at him as her eyes took on a serious look.

Max leaned away from her and opened the door. "Why don't you just cut it short," Max asked stepping out of the car. "Save you time woldn't it?" His eyes scanned the area, looking for any sign of movement amoungst the buildings. "I think, y'ah could have a nice tomboy look." He slammed the door shut and moved toward the trunk. Popping it open he reached inside and pulled out hs compound bow. He grabbed his quiver of arrows and slung it onto his back. Max wondered what she was doing, she looked like she was psyching herself out. He cocked an arrow and stepped around to her side of the car. The sun was in the midair, starting to lower. It casted a bronze glow on his face as he looked at her through the window. "It now or never allstar," he said pulling open her door.
Abby had heard him, as he left the car. She smiled as she got out of the car, once he opened the door, "Why, you wanna cut my hair?" She held her bat, "Maybe, but let's do that before you take a drink tonight, alright?" She eased past him, and started walking up towards the gas station, bat down by her side. The place looked deserted, but that could be deceiving. She glanced back at him, then scanned the parking lot. Abby took off, she was at the door fast. She leaned against the wall, and peered into the building. Her whole body stiffened, and she held her hand up to him, holding out three fingers. They musta been shut up inside. She reached out and yanked the door open, letting it fall back. She held there by the door, flush against the wall, bat cocked and ready to swing. She watched as the first one stumbled out. Abby stayed silent, not moving one muscle. she was listening and she could hear the other two shuffling towards the door. The first one out was heading for Max, but having trouble since it's leg looked to be broken. As the third one moved out the door, Anny swallowed and swung hard. Abby didn't stop til it's head was smashed against the pavement. Number two had turned back to her, and Abby slipped back towards the building, then ran at it, full swing.

"But drunk haircuts are so fun to give," Max joked as he watched her go to the window. She held up three, he didn't know if that meant there was three sinners or if she needed three seconds. He kept his bow ready for use as he watched her reactions. As soon as he saw the first sinner stumble out he knew. It looked like an easy kill, barely moving and stumbling with every step. He quickly fired an arrow into the first sinners skull, watching it puncture the head and begin to leak blood as he fell. The sinner hit the ground hard, the broken leg breaking completely off. It's head smacked with the ground breaking it open on contact. Max readied another arrow, pulling it from his sheath and pointing it directly at the second Sinner. Once he saw that Abby was going to hit it he eased off, but still was ready just incase.
Abby swung like a crazed woman. She connected do hard the head laid on it;s shoulder, she had broken the neck. The dead man just kept going for her. She kept stepping back, bad held up. She leaned back and brought one leg up to kick it square in the chest. She meant to knock it down, and as it fell, she sought it's head with the bat. Abby hit it, over and over. She seemed to have lost it for a moment. She wasn't saying anything, but tears trickled down her cheeks. She hated doing this, hated herself, hated what the world had become, but this was what she needed to do to survive. She knew this, but didn;t make her feel any better about it. This man was someone's father, brother, son, and he didn't deserve to die like this. She finally stopped, it's head unrecognizable, and staggered back til her back hit the side of the building. She was taking heaving breaths, as her eyes rose and locked on Max. She was splattered with dark blood on her legs and shirt. She took a moment , then turned and walked inside, not saying anything to him.
Abby scanned the store. It looked pretty picked over, but cans and things littered the floor. She moved around the counter and found a few packs of cigarettes on the floor. She bent and picked them up , setting them on the counter. He had mentioned trading them. She listened and didn't hear anything , no noises. She hoped it was clear in the rest of this place. She saw some matches laying beneath the counter and tossed them up next to the cigarettes. She waited for Max. She wasn't checking the restrooms or store room alone.

Max smirked at the sight of this small women bashing in the skull of the Sinner. He admitted it was a good kill, though a little messy. "Nice job all star," he said as he followed her into the gas station. "You kinda lost it, did y'ah have to keep smashin'?" He looked at all the cans and other items scattering all over, an kicked one with his foot. Most were expired or empty already so he didn't bother picking it up. As he looked through more items he reached into a lower self and pulled out a few cans of dog food. It wasn't appealing now but if they were starving later they might just want it. He placed it besides the smokes and smiled at her, "you have a little....," he said starting to trial off as he motioned to the blood on her shirt and face. He still had his bow out and the arrow cocked. "So bathroom and storage next," he asked. He walked up to the bathrooms and banged on the wall outside. From inside the ladies room he could hear some snarling, but didn't see any coming out. "Must be trapped," he said looking in. "Don't see any either."
Abby walked over to him, as the snarled echoed in the toilet. She stared at the door, "Oh..that's just great." She rolled her eyes and smirked at him, 'What...you don't like me dirty? Guess that means I have to take a bath." She literally stuck her tongue out at him, "Alright...." she stood in front of the ladies room door and glanced at him as she readied her bat, "count of three...you open the door and I swing like hell...sound good?" She locked her eyes on the door, and gripped the bat handle tighter, taking a stance. Abby hated this part of this new world and would be glad when they had cleared the place. Her nerves were on edge and a bead of sweat had crested on her brow.

"No you're fine dirty," Max said smirking at her. "Just poking fun is all." He nodded at her orders and reached for the handle. "Could be in a stall," he said pulling open the door. He half expected a sinner to just stumble out and for Abby to get smashing. Instead it seemed he was right. From inside the fattest stall a growling and snapping could be heard. The Fort shook as the Sinner through itself again and again at the door. "Hellah way to go, trapped in the shitter," Max said as he held door, "whelp, ladies first," he motioned with his hand as he tucked his arrow into the sheath and bow on his back. He pulled his knife from his belt an held it up to show he was still armed ad ready.
Damnit! She was looking for this to be quick and easy. She shook hr head and stared into the darkness of the bathroom, "Man...this is gonna suck." She ran back to the counter and snagged a pack of matches. She tossed them at him, 'Care to shed some light on the situation?" She could hear the sounds as she stepped inside, and thought , <what a gentleman> as she tried to let her eyes adjust to the lack of light. God, the smell! She felt her mouth begin to water as the fist inkling that she may vomit. Abby swallowed over and over. She reached down and pulled her shirt up over her nose. It helped, some. She used the wall to her right to lead her through the room. As she moved the thing in the stall slammed itself harder and harder at the door. God...this could end badly. If the door was locked inside the stall...how were they gonna get it out of there? She looked back to Max. He was silhouetted in the doorframe. The doors to the other stalls opened in...so Abby was trying to think. She gripped the bat tightly and then lifted her right leg. She glanced at Max, and nodded, then kicked the shit outta the door.

She didn't waste anytime, max thought to himself as he caught the matches. He struck the first one and it lit, probably the first time since the hell storm since that happened, but he didn't have time to celebrate. He tried to shine some light into the room as she walked closer in. "Would this be a bad time to mention that there could still be more outside, we never did a perimiter search," he said as he stepped in. By then she was already at the door so he rushed to the side of the stall next to it. He held his knife as she bashed it open. The sinner stumbled out, it's skin vacum tight on its body, it was easy to tell it'd been in there a while. The sinner's hair was standing out all over, black frame sunglasses hanging by one arm on its face. It's clothes were tattered and hung lossely on its body. Weight loss, either pre zombiefied or post, was present. Max held the knife up as it walked right past him and toward Abby, it's feat stumbling on its pants around it's ankles.
Oh my god this was gross! SHe felt bile rising in her throat. She shot him a look as he mentioned the perimeter. One that said, really! Now! You wanna bring that up, now!
Once freed , the thing that had at one time been a woman, moved out of the stall and went straight for Abby. She backed up a bit, and swung. The bat connected with it's head and it lost it's balance and fell to the ground. It's hand snaked out and grabbed Abby around the leg. It was dragging itself towards her.
The feel of it's grip caught Abby off guard. It was surprisingly strong for something that looked so weak. It's jaws flew open and snapped shut as it drew closer. Abby shrieked, "Get it off me!" she was pulling her leg back and doing her best to stay upright. If she hadn't had her balance, it would have drug her down to the ground already.

Max could barely make out her face in the dark, but smirked when he caught a glance of her look. He could feel her eyes rolling and glaring at him. When she hit the sinner bits of blood sprayed up and toward Max. Hee shielded most of it with his arm but still some flecs hit his face. Next thing he knew she was on the ground and the Sinner was pulling Abby with her. He quickly flippe the knife around and jabbed it in the sinner's head, right at the side of the temple. Pulling it out he wiped the blood of on his pants. "Talk about intense," he said tucking the knife in its sheath. "You okay? Didn't scratch or bite y'ah did it?" Max leaned on the wall to catch his breath before looking up at her. "Don't die on me so soon. We still got another bathroom to clear," he laughed. Max began to walk out, making sure the gas station was still clear inside.
