Abby crept out of the rest room, holding her bat. She adjusted the pack on her back. Sleeping in a bathroom was not her idea of fun, but she had been left here. She thought John had been too good to be true. While Abby had been raiding the snack machine, he had driven off. Couldn't blame him, everyone had their own agenda in the new world, and she doubted taking care of her was part of his plans.
She zipped up her coat, and started out to the main road. I 95. She just stared at the woodline surrounding the pavement. North or South? Hell, which was better? She figured if she headed North towards the cities, it would be dead central. She sighed and had promised herself she was not gonna cry, but she could feel the stinging in her eyes. Just what the fuck was she supposed to do? She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. Bright side. No dead folks walking around, not yet anyway. She had checked the abandoned vehicles at the Welcome center last night. No gas in one, no keys , but half a tank in the little Honda. God, she wished she knew how to start that car. She had rummaged through the trunks of both, and found a flashlight, some road flares, and a first aid kid. She had shoved the blanket from one into her backpack.
She stood and read the road signs. Miles loomed before her til she made it to another town. She was doing her best to not feel so hopeless. "Alright feet." she shrugged and headed toward the main road.

Max spead down the road wind blowing through his messy brown locks. A tooth pick hung from his mouth as his tires burned rubber on the road. The engine revved, able to be heard in the silence of the hell they called world, for miles. He reached up to scratch the stubble on his face, as he kept his eyes on the road. The tank was nearly full and he smiled at the thought.
it had been a few weeks since he left the last group, he didn't regret leaving them. They slowed down, people always did. He had enough supplies to make it by, and chopper to ride in style. His hand went back down to the handle as he slowed coming into the next town.
He pulled up to the front of a welcome centre, looking through the empty cars. He debated going in and checking for supplies, but they day was still young and he could get a few more hours on the road.

Abby stood near the merge lane for 95, about 300 yards from the Welcome center. She heard the vehicle long before she saw it. The rumble of an engine cut through the silence, and she ran. Ran back toward the center, following the purring metallic rumble. She saw a motorcycle and froze, almost landing on her ass, as she did so. She had thought John had come back for her, regretted his abandonment of her, but no. THis was....a stranger. She watched him, staring. She scrambled forward. This was her only chance. She held her hands out, bat pointed at the ground , dangling from her fingers. She hoped he didn't see her as a threat, had he even seen her yet? Her feet crunched on the gravel in the parking lot and she halted. She raised an arm and waved at him, 'Hey!" she sounded pathetic, or so she thought. Abby held her breath, he might just shoot her. Hell, she was taking a chance, right? It was either this , or walk to the next town. She said a silent prayer, hoping to God this guy wasn't some sicko pervert or something.

Max was caught off guard by the sound of another person. Great just what he needed, some whinny kid to tag along with him. He shut the bike off, jumped off and quickly grabbed the bow from the back of his trailer. He readied an arrow and pulled the string back, till it was flush with his cheek. "stay where you are," he said as he eyes her. "Don't move. Just amswer. Who are you? And where the rest of your group?" He didn't know if she had one but he wasn't taking any chances. He wonders why he even stopped, it would have been best to just keep driving. Maybe deep down he missed having company, someone to poke and make fun of. He stepped closer towards her, his arrow still drawn. He only had one shot, the other arrow being in his pack. He only needed one, he was confident enough he could take her. His eyes scanned the area for anyone else with a gun, them he couldn't take. Letting out a slow breath he raised an eyebrow, "if you got some, tell them to get there a$$ out here."
Her eyes grew wide as he pointed an arrow at her. Her fingers dropped the bat, and she fought the urge to run. She shook her head, "I...I am Abby...er Abigail Reed..." she shook her head over and over, "no one is with me...the one guy I found down 381...he left me here." She stared at him, eyes taking him in. He was older than she first thought. He seemed...cold...mean, did she really want to go with him? Abby shook her head, 'I am alone,I swear, don't shoot me, please?" She gasped as she got a good look at his face...his eyes. They were the prettiest blue she had ever seen. Abby swallowed, what the hell was she thinking? Screw his eyes, he could kill her right now, in cold blood. "I ain;t dangerous....I just...was hoping for a ride."

Max lowered the bow, "easy I ain't gonna hurt y'ah," he said keeping the weapon at his side, "I just didn't want you to be raiding my stuff." He walked closer to her, "I'm Max," he said extending his hand. "I'm guessing you don't have set of wheels?" He didn't know why he was being friendly, maybe it because of how scared she sounded. "Listen if you want a ride I can give y'ah one, but all I got is bike. might not be the most luxurious ride, but it will get you to where you want to go," he paused, "where is it y'ah heading to anyway? Seem to me you're in the middle of sh!thole nowhere. You picked a hella place to get stranded."
Abby stared at him as he came closer. He said he wasn't going to hurt her, alright. She took his hand hesitantly and shook it, "I..am from Maryland, I walked across the tunnel." she shook as she remembered the darkness of it, and the smell." I got heading down 381 and met this guy and he found a car, we stopped here and took off as I checked the vending machines." Abby looked a bit less frightened, 'I...there is a car..that Honda, it has gas , but no keys in it." She bit her bottom lip and ran a hand through her hair, "you..wouldn't know how to do that, would ya?" She looked at his bike, but was worried , she had never ridden one before, and what if she messed up and they got in an accident or something? Her mind raced with all the possibilities.

Max smiled a her, it felt good to smile, something he hadn't done in a long time. He tucked one thumb in the loop hole his jeans as the other held his bow. "As a matter of fact I do know how to start it," he laughed, "something I picked up." He had learned it before the apocalypse, an something he was glad he knew. "Just need a quick look at it." He didn't know if he wanted to travel together, or was just looking for him to fix it so he just smiled. "My bikes almost empty, so if you want company in the car...." he said leaning back on his heels. It would beat driving out in the cold air. "It doesn't really have much heat either."
She was sure she was drooling at him , when he smiled at her. So much so, she ran the back of her wrist over her lips, to wipe any away. God, what the hell, Abby, get your shit together! She reprimanded herself. Stop looking at the pretty face and get in survivor mode!
"Oh...uh, sure, that'd be great, I have no idea about how to do that, " she rambled, and bent down and picked up her bat. He mentioned coming with her, and she fumbled with picking the bat up, 'Really?" she sounded shocked as she righted herself and blinked at him, "You ..wanna come with ...me?" Her eyes stared at the bike as he spoke about gas and heat."Sure....Hell,I don't even know where I am headed, but I knew I couldn't stay at my house anymore." She shrugged, "I just started walking, then found a truck and it died right before the tunnel, so..." she stopped herself, "sorry...I haven't really had alot of people to talk to lately." She started over to the Honda, "if you get it started, you can come along..where were you headed?"She glanced back at him as she stopped at the driver's side door.

Max just smirked at her rambling, "it's a'right," he said laughing. "Let me gather my things and I'll start the car a'right?" He walked back to his bike and grabbed a gas canister from the back. He syphined the gas from his bikes take, getting little under a quarter of gas. He then grabbed the keys and tossed them down the road. Grabbing his duffle bag and gas can he walked back to the car. "Well let's get this show going," he said tossing his times beside the car. He pulled open the door and began to get to works hot wiring it. Soon enough he had it started and smiled to himself. He tossed the items in the trunk and looked at her, "alright girl it should work now."
Abby stood back and let him work . She almost jumped for joy when the car started. She grinned, "Damn! How did you do that?" She actually laughed as she threw her back pack in the back seat and ran around the car to the passenger seat.
Getting in, she smiled at him, "Um..you drive." She crawled in and buckled her seat belt. She was suddenly a bit overwhelmed with being alone with him. This could be awkward. She sat silent for a moment as he got in and situated himself."So...which way? From here...we can head South down 95 towards Florida, or West...hell, I don't know about North, with all the cities, figure that is dead central, but I am along for the ride." She smiled at him, then reached back and unzipped her pack, pulling out a map. She opened it in her lap, "best thing I found so far." she knew she was talking alot, but not like the radio worked.

"I don't care wher we go. I've been all over, west has just as many sinners," Max said sliding into the car. He looked up at her, "where was it you'd like ta go? North might be nice, we could detour the cities, or scavenge them." He started the car, "just a pick a place on the map and let's go." He put it into drive and pulled out of the lot. "So what'd you do before the outbreak." He decided small talk would be good, something to break the ice. He honestly didn't care where they went, he was open to go anywhere, he could handle the dead. Max liked the company and turned to Abby, "so cap'in where to?"
He wanted to talk, that was cool! She swallowed as he said it was her choice. Her eyes scanned the map, as he asked about her life before. She felt the knot in her stomach again, as she thought of the past, "I..was , nothing special, lived at home, "she glanced at him, 'was planning to attend college, but worked at the diner in town, " she gave a soft chuckle, "I was a waitress, so...this whole, survive the apocolypse is kicking my ass." She faced him as he called her captain, and almost felt her jaw drop. No way a guy like him would have given her a second look before the dead came back, but here he was, sitting in the same car as her. He was nice!
Stop that! Her brain screamed at her.Looks can be deceiving!
Abby felt her face fall as the thought boomed in her head. That's right, some of the pretty plants were poisonous. She swallowed and looked down at the map, so as not to get caught in those blue eyes of his.
She picked up her finger and pointed, closing her eyes. Opening them, 'huh...ever been to Tenessee?" She glanced over at him, and looked back down, at the map, "it's west of here."

Max felt her avoid his gaze and smirked at her. "I've actually been to Tenessee once," he said pulling the car towards there destination. "Was kicked out of a bar there, done drunk couldn't hold his liquor." He drove down the road letting the trees pass them by. "Have you been? You have family there or something?" He didn't know why she's pick there of all the places, unless she had a reason to go. It did seem secure, desolate, probably little to none sinners. Sinners, that was something new in this world. He wondered if she'd had experience with them. "So the sinners, you had to kill many of them? Kill anyone y'ah know before the hell storm?" He set his gaze on her, taking in the view of her face. She was young, way younger than him, not the youngest he'd been with but young. There was something about her, the homegirl next door. She was simple, he like that, he also like staying alive. He knew not to get close, it'd only end bad.
Abby shook her head,"family...no. Just a random pick, but mountains are good right? I mean, history is full of battles fought and won by using the high ground,"she realized she probably was sounding a bit nutty and stopped herself." But,no...my family is dead." He had asked about...wait,he was calling the dead walking sinners,"why do you call them that...sinners?" She stared right at him, even shifted a bit,her back more towards the passenger door."my mom and dad were good people....they...dad changed..barged in the house with his arm dripping blood,he attacked my mom and I..."she swallowed and ran het hands over her face and up through her hair, blowing out a deep breath. Keep it together! You had no choice and they loved you, would want you to live! She told herself. She smiled at him,"so I definitely don't want to let you drink, good to know!" She grinned at him. She was forcing the conversation somewhere else, she didn't like talking about herself and talking about how she had bashed her parents brains in even less."so...what about you? You got family...wife...girlfriend...?"

Max just looked at her, "naw, nothing like that, no girlfriend or girl to call my own. Not even before all this cr@p. I kept to myself. didn't have time for all that. Did you," he asked. He could see she was uncomfortable talking about what happened to her parents, that it was something she didn't want to talk about. "Yeah, but everyone needs a drink now and then," he laughed. He wouldn't qiestion Her about her parents further, he got that it was tough. He knew how people were with loved ones. How they were when they had to kill their own child, wife, or little brother. Though never having to experience these thing personally, he had knew people who had. He went back to her question on the sinners, he didn't know why he'd called them that, it was something Brian always said. The name stucked and he liked it. "Called 'em sinners cause a friend did, name just stucked."
Abby shook her head,"no...not since high school, work and hang out mostly....nothing,steady,ya know what I mean?" She chewed on that bottom lip for a moment before getting brave enough,"so the friend, who called 'em sinners,he dead?" She felt bad for him. He had been alone, even before the world went to shit. Her head snapped up from the map,"oh...you're...um,nevermind." She had realized maybe he didn't have a girl because he didn't like girls,"it's cool, one of the guys on the track team with me was and we were great friends!" She frowned for a moment,"he was the only one who stuck with me when my stuck me in ..." Her voice trailed off and she closed her eyes for a minute,"i guess he's probably dead," she suddenly felt horrible. She had forgotten Troy,he could have been alive, he might have helped her. She placed her hands over her face and ran them up over hair, taking a deep breath,"sorry...I have anxiety issues ." She said quietly then stared out the window.

"I can tell," Max said before going silent. He had drummed his fingers on the wheel in silence. After a while he spoke, "yeah my friendd did. He got bit in the leg and we chopped it off. He survived only to be killed by some pric with a knife. He was a good man, had a wife and kid before all this. He didn't even know if they survived, he had given up hope." He took a breath, "were you and this Troy close? He was your boyfriend," Max asked looking at her, "you try looking for him? Even any clue where he could be? We can turn the car around and go look for him." He then realized she had mentioned a man earlier, "he wasn't the one who abandoned you at the snack stand was he?"
Abby felt bad, while he sat in silence. He was probably going to ditch her like the last guy. She stared out the window and ran her hair around her fingers. It was a nervous habit she had since childhood.
He was talking about his friend, and she turned and looked at him, obviously confused. When he asked about Troy being her boyfriend, she burst out laughing, "No...way off, he liked guys, we were more like girlfriends." She shook her head and became serious , 'No, Troy wasn't that guy, his name was John and I really didn't know him.I met him on the road, and that was it, sorta like how I met you." When he suggested going back for Troy, she looked scared to death, "NO!...I can't...please, NO!" she reached out and gripped his arm, "I can't go back through that tunnel....no car would make it through, too....it's bad, I can't do that again." She was almost freaking out, no , not almost. Abby was shaking like a leaf, her hand on his arm was trembling, and fresh tears stung her eyes,as she let go, 'I know I sound like a pussy, but I can't....I walked it...alone...once, I can't go back in there." She wrapped one arm around her waist and propped her elbow on it, and started chewing on her thumb nail as she stared out the window, "the smell....the ...cars...and dead people..." she sounded terrified.

Max moved farther away from her when she started freakig out, "God geez just come your sh!t," he said looking at her. "We won't go back, I was just making a suggestion, you didn't have to go loco." She really didn't want to go back there. "What ever it is we'l survive, we don't have to go back. But seriously calm down, you sound insane. It can't be that bad. I get this world suck, but seriously. We've all been through it, those things they stink. We kill them. Life goes on." He went silent again. It was a momnt before he spoke, "wait you think I'm gay? I'm not gay? I can honestly tell you that. I got list as long as my arm to prove it too. What made you think I was gay? Cause I didn't fall head over heals for your charm? How old are you anyway? You look like your 16."
