Damon and Samantha had spent the night in Remy's old apartment using the solar panels to have a last warm shower and night in a secure apartment before they headed for the countryside. They had shared some food and enjoyed a peaceful evening. Damon had woken early letting Samantha rest and get her energy for the day ahead. He had repacked the car and parked it out front. Once Samantha was ready they shared some Coffee before hitting the road.
They drove for hours, Damon never leaving the wheel and Samantha by his side. He had found some CD's so when in open roads they had the luxury of music. Very classic stuff generally. He turned onto a highway seeing the city of New Orleans vanish in the mirrors. They were for now getting away from the Lake's towards Baton Rouge on route 10 before taking some rural roads. They would soon be crossing the Mississippi any hour now. They still had the option to head either East towards Texas, North or East into Alabama.
"How rural do you want to settle then Sammy? Within an hour of a city... or Properly isolated? I can work with either but it will help in finding a spot." He wanted to be sure they found somewhere Samantha could feel at home and happy.
He flicked his smoke out the window as they passed a few broken down vehicles.
Sam had slept in, but she still seemed to get drowsy while riding. She listened to the music and stared out at her surroundings. She couldn't believe this was her world anymore. Broken down vehicles, corpses on the open road, besides those roaming around. She leaned closer to him," I don't want to cut us off from supplies, but I can't take this." She pointed at a small building with dead ambling around it." I don't want to be completely isolated." She sighed," hell, Damon, I don't know, I just know I did the alone thing and the group thing and neither worked for shit." She ran her hands over her face. God she needed a drink!
No. She told herself, you can't do that. One would lead to two and who knows what else. Sam slipped back towards her window," I hate this, all of it, I know it's stupid but I miss people, real people, not the fucked up ones this world has turned us all into." She glanced at him," you know what I mean, hanging out on a Saturday night, having a few drinks, dancing, god I miss going dancing!" She smiled," either way, we gotta find something before the sun goes down."

Damon nodded listening as she spoke "Ill get us somewhere like a country hotel then if I can. If we are within 30 miles of a big city... Supplies are close enough." He pulled over after a few minutes in open road with little threatening surroundings.
Damon looked at a map he picked up from a hotel of the state. "Looks like there's a Wildlife refuge on Route 10 other side of Baton Rouge between there and Lafayette. If we find a place on Route 10 we should be near enough to the cities. Sound decent enough as a plan?"
Damon heard her mention dancing and people and smiled. Maybe he could make that up to her some way. You have to enjoy the little things and surely if dancing was something of the old world Samantha missed he would make it happen.
He sensed a slight unease in Samantha and knew she was fighting her addictions hard as they began driving again. "I'm proud of how you've been doing the last five weeks. You know that right. All this mess is enough alone to deal with..."
A country hotel? She wondered what that was like? Shed stayed in lavish places in the cities and of course in Paris. Never had she done anything quant. It would be a nice change. She glanced at him as he spoke. She shifted a bit when he pulled over, to help him with the map.
Her eyes ran over the lines and markings. Funny how little it all seemed on paper. He said he was proud of her and his words drew her eyes to his face," and I thought I was doing pretty good at hiding it." She chewed her bottom lip for a moment," I hate feeling that by taking care of me you are limiting yourself." She ran a hand through her hair," I don't want to be a burden to you, Damon. Don't want you worrying over me all the time, wondering if and when I will slip back." She glanced out the window and then back at him," I am taking it all one day at a time."
Sam reached out one hand and trailed a finger down his cheek," I just want to make you happy, to at least feel normal for a little while. Is that wrong?"

Damon kept the car moving as Samantha spoke his eyes on the road but his mind was listening to every word she said. He chuckled as she talked about how she felt she was hiding it. "You aren't necessarily hiding it if you ask me. I think your mind-set has altered a little last week or so. You don't seem to be craving as much... Which is a good thing."
He stopped talking a moment as he squeezed the car through a tight gap due to two stopped vehicles "You need to remember I'm not trying to help you because of charity... or some other bad motive. I want to be the person who looks out for you. I want to be the guy who helps you through everyday." He felt her finger down his cheek and smiled
"Because I feel happier than I have for two years. I'm a happier person with you around. I feel more normal too. And that's what I want. There's nothing wrong about that anymore. No need to strive for excellency. Get a job... Go to the gym... "
With a bit of open road he accelerated knowing a hotel should be near by now. They crossed the Mississippi and had passed Baton Rouge "Just try and get by each day and make each other smile. And you have the best smile Sam. Lightens up my day the last few weeks. Now lets find a place to stay."
Sam listened as he spoke. She found herself sucking in her breath and eyeing both those abandoned vehicles they had to ease past. She let it out, realizing then that she had been holding it.
The road opened up and they cruised through the city of Baton Rouge. She worried about this. Would someone come out, attack them? She sighed, and smiled at him. He seemed to know what to say to set her at ease. Her eyes started gazing the sides of the roads, looking for something. She lifted her arm as they were passing through a small little built up area. It said it was a bed and breakfast," what about that? It looks kinda deserted." She glanced at him. Her eyes glancing past him," we could keep going, got some time before it gets dark."

Damon glanced at the map while driving and began thinking for a few moments. He saw the bed and breakfast yet had second thoughts. "Another five minutes there's a more remote country place. Name suggests it may be a former farm or large estate. Bigger buildings are preferred personally. Stronger stuff to keep the biters out."
He drove the car on and in a few minutes of open road with little around they came across a large house. It must have been an estate. Large house right by a small lake. Damon drove the car down a long drive "Place looks pretty deserted...?"
Sam stared out at the large building. He thought bigger was sturdier, and she thought smaller meant easier to clear and protect. Guess they would see who was right," yeah, it's, kinda spooky." She gave a nervous chuckle," you think we gonna have to clear out many?" She didn't see anything in the way of cars, but that didn't mean anything. Sam waited for him to cut off the car before she would get out with a weapon.

Damon stepped out the car seeing the large doors and began nodding positively "I doubt many should be inside. The door looks as if its been shut along time. Little blood. Maybe six or seven tops." He knew Samantha was less used to taking on walkers than himself and tried to offer some reassurance.
"I wont take any unnecessary chances here. Spooky isn't the worst descriptive characteristic these days. May keep people away. Deterrent to bad people." He lit up another smoke and placed his gun in its holster, taking a golf club from the trunk of the car and his knife.
Sam stared at the doors, as she drew her gun out of her pack. He took a golf club, and that made her grin. "Reall?" She pointed at it as she gripped her gun," I don't want them getting that close to me." She leaned over and kissed his cheek," I'm fine, don't worry." She felt for sure he was concerned about how she would handle clearing the place. She moved some stuff around looking for other weapons to use in the trunk. Same came across a flashlight. " I can light them up and you nock them down, sound like a plan?"

Damon was ready and swinging the club in his hand "Nice metallic object... swing it quick. Kills em quiet. Don't want the whole countryside to know we are here. So only shoot if its necessary." She gave him a quick peck on the cheek to which he returned a smile and a hug. He then placed a hand on her shoulder just to reassure her "Follow my lead. Done this tonnes of times before. I trust you."
When Samantha showed him the flashlight he nodded before stopping short of the front door. He saw a tin can on the floor and gave it to Sam... "When I say bang this a few times on your gun to make a little noise... Will lure some downstairs out into the light."
Damon stood by the door where any walkers inside could not see him holding his golf club high and ready to swing. He could see the hallway through a mirror on the porch. The walkers would follow Samantha's sound and he could take them out. House had little noise so there couldn't be many inside.
He nodded to Samantha to give her the signal to begin making a little noise and slowly opened the door.
Sam shoved the flashlight in the back pocket of her jeans. She followed him up the front steps and took the can. She held her pistol in her hand. She gripped the can and watched him get into position. She took a couple of deep breaths. Lure them out, like lambs to the slaughter. She just hoped it went that easy. Easy, nothing in this world was ever easy.
She gripped the gun and tapped the can. Just a couple times at first, then a few more. She glanced at Damon, then tapped more, harder, a bit louder. Sounds. She heard movement inside, then a form in the shadows, it was coming. Coming for her. She wanted to back up, took a step back, careful not to fall down the steps. She tapped again and the form kept coming. Stench rolled along the air ahead of it. Closer, closer, come on. She was growing impatient now. She didn't know if she couldn't I this. She trembled as it came to the door, she glanced at Damon.

Damon had his club ready. It looked to be a 7 Iron from what he could guess, the number on the club was worn away so he only had elevation to guide him in identifying the club. He heard Samantha banging the can yet his eyes were on the mirror. He saw the walker approach. He was a big fellow dressed in rather nice clothes suggesting he probably lived in the house.
Damon knew he couldn't take the mans skull with his club... it would be too thick. Instead he swung through the knee, taking the walker down. He now could use his knife to stab the walker through the back of the skull. Twisting and removing it.
He removed the sweat from his brow and looked up at Samantha "Jeez he was a big bastard... You okay?" He was half listening to the house trying to hear any more walkers.
As the dead man lumbered towards her, she felt panic rising. She bit the inside of her cheek so she didn't scream. It hurt like a hell. She hadn't meant to bite that hard as she realized she could taste blood in her mouth. Her eyes were wide as she watched what had probably been the man who owned this place coming into the light. He looked like someone had eaten half his face and she instinctively stepped back. Her foot slipping on the edge of the step. She teetered but got her balance.
Damon was on him the omens he cleared the door. Outstretched arms catching air as Sam had backed away. Her eyes watched and then stared into the building. She saw movement. Damon commented about the man being huge and she pointed," another one coming." She gripped her pistol, wanting to shoot it and be done with it, but she knew he was right and it would draw unwanted attention out here." We can't move him, not with that one coming."

Damon had left the club by the door in using the knife to kill the latest walker. He spotted the next one coming as Samantha pointed out. The incoming walker looked like a waiter or butler of sorts by his clothing. Damon offered the knife to Samantha "Ill have to hold him back. When I have him... use the knife before he bites me."
Damon stood ready looking the walker in the eye. He waited for him to pass the door way so he could force him against the wall. His life was at risk in this plan but he trusted Sam. She had to finish the walker or Damon would need to improvise.
Sam shook her head and started to protest, but her hand reached out and took the knife he was offering her. She gripped it tightly and took a shaky breath. He was putting his life in her hands. She trembled as she watched him take up position and grab the dead man by his arms and shoved it back against the wall of the building.
Sam thought she would hesitate, but she charged forward. She didn't want that thing to bite Damon. She needed him, he was keeping her alive and clean. She saw the jaws snapping at him and how he was exerting strength trying to keep the corpse in place. Sam came in fast and from the side, the knife went in, and she yanked back. In again, back out and in again. She couldn't stop! She was so focused on killing it, stopping it for good, that her mind kept her going, doing it again, and again. Her whole body was trembling, congealed blood was sticking to her fingers, and bits of brain matter was stuck on the knife blade.

Damon watched as Samantha killed the walker his emotions taking three train stops; fear, relief and then finally anguish. He slowly removed the blade from Samantha's hand and placed it in his pocket. He watched as the walker slowly fell to the floor and gave Sam a hug, using his shirt to clean the blood from her fingers.
"Its okay... You got him. Its working out as we planned."
The house was now quiet and he could only guess the other walkers were in the further reaches of the house or trapped in rooms. He wanted to head inside but first he made sure Samantha was okay.
Sam couldn't move. She just stared at her hand as he took the knife abd wiped her hand clean of the evidence. She glanced at him and finally got control of her body. Sam shook her head," give me a sec, okay?" She stepped back and felt like she was gonna be sick as she looked at what she did. She rushed to the side of the step and threw her guts up. Bent over she retched and then wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. Slowly she turned and nodded," ok, I'm good, let's go."
Was she though? Good? She couldn't believe what she had just done. The man was already dead though, not like she had killed a living person. That thought brought her to another. Could she have done that to a living person? God, she hoped she would never have to find out. She moved up behind Damon, and fought the urge to hug him, to just feel him close. He was alive and warm and she needed that right now. It would have to wait. They needed to clear this place and get locked down before dark.

Damon watched as Samantha hurled up and despite how bad he felt that he was making her do something she obviously wasn't comfortable with he had a mild smile. It was kind of funny that Samantha was reacting so dramatically. He was so used to killing; walkers, animals... people when necessary.
Once Sam claimed to be ready he entered the house quietly and circled the ground floor finding little sign of walkers. There was a small thudding sound upstairs that he could hear every few minutes but otherwise the house seemed pretty clear. The kitchen had the body of a young man who looked like the family member who had originally turned. His brains had been blown out but blood covered the counters in the kitchen. Evidence of a brawl between man and undead.
Once they had circled the six large ground floor rooms they were back near the entrance. The building had not be compromised. All doors and windows intact. He glanced towards the staircase "Last part of the house we have to clear. Definitely one up there. Stay close behind me. Alright?"
He didn't have much thought for emotions right now. This was not a situation for that. He had to ensure he got the job done and Samantha was safe. The sooner they did that, the sooner they could relax a little.
Sam followed behind him as he searched through the downstairs. She gripped the gun tighter each time she heard the noise from upstairs. The scene in the kitchen made her stomach lurch again, but she didn't get sick this time. She hated the idea of becoming used to this shit.
He paused at the stairs and told her to stay close. She hissed back at him, "don't worry about that, I am gonna be on you like a second skin." she smirked and started up after him. She paused as something caught her eye. It stood near the door. It was one of those fancy cans you could keep your umbrella or cane in by the front door. An object caught her attention, sticking up out of it. It was some kind of walking stick, it had a sharp end. She ran over and grabbed it, then went back up the steps behind Damon. "Wait?" she saw him glance at her, "I don't wanna have to use the knife and get that close again, this gives me reach." She gave him a wicked grin, and motioned for him to go ahead.
Up the steps, the noise was louder, coming from a room near the middle of the hallway. She looked at Damon, "um, tap on the door, it sounds across the room, get it coming this way, and then ...open the door and I can spear it in the head with this thing?' She gripped the stick and showed it's sharp tip.
