Damon had slowly moved up the stairs and headed towards one of the doors. He tapped and opened it stepping out of the way to allow Samantha to deal with the walker with her new found weapon. His mind was then stopped when he heard something haunting and chilled him to the spine. He had heard something similar before in LA when this whole mess started. A sound Samantha would not have heard as she was hitting the walker. He stepped towards the next door and turned around to Sam.
"Don't follow me in here. If I am right something quite horrible and sad is behind this door. Some things we all know about but they are too painful to witness... Should be the last room to clear. You check some of the others. Okay?" He headed towards the room slowly opening the door.
Sam liked the distance this stick gave her. She slammed the thing into the head of the female biter one last time for good measure. She gave a soft groan and turned to see Damon step out of the doorway. He told her to check another room. He said other things too, and Sam stared after him, a bit confused. What was going on?
She knew he was trying to protect her, but what had him so spooked? She eased towards the door, and listened for a moment. She didn't hear anything. What was going on?
Sam sighed and reached for the knob. He said not to, to check another room. She hesitated, then sighed, and leaned back against the door. Fine. She had to trust him. As she was stepping away to check the room across from it, she heard a noise, faint. What was that?
No, keep going. She moved across the hall and listened at that door. Nothing. She tapped. Nothing. Slowly she opened the door, and peeked inside. It looked completely empty. She shut the door. What was taking him so long? He should be out of there. Sam crossed the hallway and turned the knob, opening the door and stepping in, "I know you said to....."

Damon had entered the room and headed towards the source of the sound. The room had a connecting bathroom on the side with the door open. Inside the bathroom was the undead corpse of a girl in her late teens restricted by a cord wrapped around her neck. On the floor an empty bottle of pills. He headed over and placed a knife through the poor girls head.
This was surprising as he thought he had heard something else. The cry of an infant. However none seemed to be present. It was very probable the teen had made those sounds with her throat restricted. He heard the door open as he left the bathroom and entered the bedroom. The décor was that of a teenage girl. Posters of a rock band. Family photos were everywhere. He had noticed the mother and child in the photo were not in the house.
Samantha entered and he was holding the empty bottle of pills and quickly closed his fist around the bottle. He looked at her and shook his head "Believe me Sam... you don't want to get used to what is hidden in this room. I didn't ask you to come in here for you. Not for me. Some things torture the mind. If you start to humanise the dead. You wont survive."
He headed to the door and was ready to leave with her for now. He could tidy up and deal with the body another time. "The house is secure. If you want we can stay here for now. Just need to light proof the windows and lock the doors. Its your choice."
Sam stopped talking as she saw him. What was going on? He spoke about her not surviving, not wanting her to have to do certain things. He was trying to protect her. For who though, him, or her?
He was trying to not let this world affect her. It already had, it was leaching off her everyday she was alive. Didn't he see that? They all changed, everyone. The longer they survived the worse they became.
He came towards her and edged her out of the room, shutting the door behind them. "Alright, we leaving the dead in here with us?" She was prepared to clean up, clear them out, but it sounded like he just wanted to hunker down for now. "Let's get the stuff, and get started. " She grabbed his hand, 'it's ok, we're ok." She wanted him to know she understood his intentions.
Sam let go and headed down the stairs, to get supplies from the car. She just wanted to be lock down before night fall.

Damon heard Samantha's words yet finding a girl who had overdosed... It seemed a scenario that could only be negative for her recovery to see what she could be. Depression was something feared for Samantha out in the world. Outside of a large group he was concerned for both their mental health.
Damon started heading down the stairs with Samantha "I can remove the body in a little while. No need to bury them. We cant expend the energy. Just need to be sure the doors lock and the windows are covered before we can settle down. Think the master bedroom will be safe to spend the night. We can escape through the window if attacked and the lock looked to work."
Damon had seen a linen cupboard downstairs which should have some sheets and more to cover the windows. Bright lights attract walkers at night. Once they reached the foot of the stairs he searched the butler walkers pockets to find a set of keys.
Sam was down the steps , popping the trunk of the car as he searched the butler. She had heard him, talking about securing the place. She grabbed her bag and one small box, then headed for him. "We can always move something infront of the doors, this one, the back one and the one to the bedroom we sleep in." She saw the keys, 'it's not dead I'm worried about, it's living. " She locked eyes on him, "I trust you, no one else, after those other people, lving can break in, dead are just annoying." She nodded at the car, "I got my stuff, and this, there's more back there." She went up the steps and inside. She set stuff on the dining room table, she didn't want to go back in that kitchen, not alone. It was creepy, that dead man laying there, and all that blood.
She waited for Damon, and when he came in, she helped him, "Alright, tell me what you want me to do?" She smiled at him, as she was unloading some food out of the box.

Damon was considering all of her ideas as they headed back inside the house. He looked around the ground floor. "Well for security there are two jobs I guess. Barricading the doors and light proofing the windows. Think you can shut the curtains and hang some extra sheets up. Will help hide us from the outside world if nobody knows we are here. Ill move some furniture and lock all the doors. Seem a fair deal." He returned the smile his eyes drifting to the food which showed how hungry he was.
Damon took a pair of gloves from his bag and headed towards the front door which had a window next to it for Sam to cover. He stopped working every once in a while to watch Sam working to be sure she didn't need his help. He had all his belongings already in the house so they were both ready to lock up. Damon was moving a large desk across the hall to barricade the door. He used carpet to move it easily across the marble floor easily and with little noise.
Damon was nearly finished and would stop to see how many windows Sam had done. He couldn't wait to have the house secured so the two of them could settle down and eat some food. He was tired after hours of driving yet kept working because he knew it was necessary.
Sam nodded, "Sure thing, I can do that." She moved to the closet and found some drapes and sheets to hang over the existing curtains. She moved into the living room and climbed up on the back of the couch, to hang a large set of drapes over the ones hanging at the window.
She held onto the wall to keep from falling. "Do you think we have to worry about the windows in the kitchen?" She asked as she moved around and got the rest of the down stairs windows. He was moving a large desk, she watched for a few seconds to see if he needed any help. He was doing alright. She got the window at the front door last. She held an armful of linen still and stood in the hall way , 'Upstairs, next, or you wanna help me do the kitchen window and barricade that door?" She was not going in there alone, the smell and sight made her want to gag.
Sam heard her belly belly rumble, "Can we do this and then eat something? Maybe do the upstairs after?"

Damon remembered the kitchen when she had asked and it was starting to tick that she was not comfortable near that room. He shook his head "Leave me some linen. Once I have shut the back door the house is secure. You deal with the master bedroom as that's where we will spend the night. We already cleared it."
Damon heard Sam mention food and he himself was quite hungry. He knew however that the light was fading. "If we put five hard minutes work in it will all be done and we can settle down and eat. No fires tonight. We aren't ready."
Damon moved another large chest of draws in a minute or two and covered the kitchen windows. He shut all the doors downstairs to avoid allowing any intruder free movement of the house. He would hear doors opening or be awoken from his sleep. He now headed upstairs to follow Sam. He was happy they were secure now. Maybe they could have a relaxed and enjoyable evening. Food he was especially looking forward too.
Sam did her best to cover the windows upstairs. The ones in the master bedroom and the hallway. She tried sobering the one in the bathroom but she would have to climb up on the tub , stand on the tile sill around it and stretch to get to the top of the window. One handed it was hard, and her wrist was already throbbing.
She had decoded to wait for him to help her. The dresser was bit and she couldn't move it on her own, instead she rummaged through it and the closet. Nice clothes a bit big on her, but they would work. She held up a pink silk night gown in front of her and stared into the mirror. She looked horrid. Her hair and face had some blood splatter on them, her hand and forearm still wrapped in a make shift cast. The soft pink was lovely, but she felt she didn't fit into its world anymore.
She let it fall to the floor and turned as she heard him." I got them done, except for the bathroom." She stood there for a moment ," ready to eat now?" Sam tried going past him outside he doorway, to go for food.

Damon had finished and headed upstair. He saw Sam and knew which window she needed him to cover but first he stopped her for a second noticing the blood on her face. Damon grabbed one of his larger water bottles and a clean rag. He made the rag damp with the water and quickly got the blood off Sams face. He kind of guessed she would not be confortable.
Once he had gotten her face clean he gave her the bottle "Use it as you wish. The rivers not far so we have enough water."
Damon left prepping the food too Sam, he fixed the cover on the bathroom window and then moved another desk across the top of the stairs.
Sam didn't know what Damon was doing, but soon realized. When he handed the bottle and rag to her, she smiled." Thanks, I can take some swmblance of a bath soon then." She watched him go into the bathroom and she began rummaging through the boxes. Her eyes lit up as she saw some things in the box. They had some decent stuff. Tuna, a box of crackers that were probably stale, but who cared? She sat them down and almost squealed. Colette had been holding out. Peanut butter! Sam pulled out some cans of soup and a few cans of fruit," hey, you think these people still have stuff in their kitchen cabinets?" She wanted to make sure they could replace what they ate, or should she worry about conserving stuff.
Her stomach growled, and she glanced to the bathroom. She opened the jar of peanut butter and smelled it. Sam headed towards the bathroom," did you pack this?" She stared at him as she fought the urge to run her finger in the jar for a taste. It had been ages since she had ate this and her mouth was actually watering.

Damon had finished and changed his shirt quickly noting the blood and sweat all over it. He took out his flask of water and took a sip before going to see Sam and simply nodded "Yeah... Stuff was at Collette's. They had two jars so I just grabbed one... Why you like that stuff."
Damon had been thinking about the kitchen "We have enough food to last two weeks. We don't need to be too rationed. Hopefully some domesticated farm animals are near by... Vegetables... Or just basic stores. Meds we are good on. Just fuel in the car that's low. We probably only have 20 miles left in the tank."
Damon headed towards the bedroom pulling up some chairs to a desk "Ill let you choose the meal... I could eat a horse right now... but lets hope it doesn't come to that."
Sam nodded and grinned, "I love peanut butter." She walked back into the room and picked up a spoon. She dug a spoonful out and popped it in her mouth. She shrugged as he said the meal was up to her. Seriously? He had limited things a bit, since he blocked off the downstairs. They couldn't go to the kitchen to heat the soup, so she picked up the can of tuna, and some crackers. She spotted a small jar of mayo, and decided tuna it was. Taking the spoon out of her mouth with half the peanut butter raked off on her tongue, she handed him the tuna can, "open, please?" She had a gob of peanut butter in her mouth as she spoke and covered her mouth. Hell, she was hungry. She would mix it up after he got the can open, and she had drained it in the bathroom sink.

Damon smiled when she asked him to open the can. It reminded him of University having to do that for Lara. He quickly opened it with ease not saying a word he handed it back to her. Damon then grabbed some crackers to eat and took a seat at the table "If you want keep the Peanut butter... enjoy it far more than me." Damon didn't mind peanut butter but he though this would be a nice small gesture of kindness to Sam. He had a personal dislike of Tuna but he stomached it these days. The end of the old world ended pickiness. Damon had eaten some pretty dreadful meals since this mess started. He hoped he could find a cow or pigs in the area. They could make a small fire outside and cook stuff up.
He opened the can and she mixed it up with the mayo. She glanced at him as he told her to keep it, the peanut butter, "Nah, we are a team, we share" she smiled at him as she sat the tuna down between them, "I have never been crazy over tuna fish, but beggars can't be choosers, right?" She put some on a cracker and popped it in her mouth, chewed and swallowed, "Man, I can't believe I am saying this, but it ain't half bad, needs some relish, onions, maybe some pepper, but it's better than going hungry." She looked at him and smiled, 'So, you think we can stay here for a bit, or just tonight?" She ate another cracker and waited a moment, 'What are you thinking about? I see those wheels of yours turning."

Damon's mind had been racing and it brought a grin to his face as Samantha said she could see his mind was at work "Id like to give it a go here for a little while. If it doesn't work its not like we cant just find a new place. No mortgages or debt anymore. Can try and make this place safer and comfier. Clean it out and try and have a life." Damon ate some more of his food hiding the disgust he had for the taste of Tuna. He was happy at least Sam was enjoying her meal.
Damon took another cracker and ate it plain "All of that can wait for tomorrow. We are safe. We have the whole of upstairs secured. Nobody knows we are here. Its our kingdom." Damon then remembered he had brought something for Sam he had found back in New Orleans in Remy's apartment and took from his bag a battery powered CD player.
"I remember you saying how much you used to like music and dancing..." He paused for a second "you cant play it too loud but well... Happy housewarming." Damon placed it on the table with a few CD's for Sam. It had been the real weight in his bag. He looked to her and smiled hoping she liked it. It was just an attempt to give her something of the old world she could enjoy again.
Sam watched as he got something from his bag. He sat down the CD player and she nearly felt her jaw drop open. Where had he found that?
He wanted to stay here and she was alright with that, but she hadn't even gotten to answer. She just sat there and stared at the CD player. She looked at him and he would then see the tears in her eyes. Sam couldn't say anything at first. How wonderful was this man? Sam realized how much he truly cared for her, just then. He truly listened when she spoke!
Sam got up and hugged him," I don't know what to say?" Honestly, she was lost for words, so instead she simply kissed him, a sincere tender kiss.

Damon stayed still allowing Sam to kiss him and say thank you. He smiled and sat back for a few moments "There is no need to say thank you... I just remembered you saying some of the things you missed about the old world. There are few things I can bring back... but music is something this world cant take away."
Damon hoped he could find another guitar laying about this house... finding a hobby was important these days. Damon grabbed the CD player and handed some CD's to Samantha. He had no idea what tastes she had.
Sam felt him pull back, and stared at him. Had she reacted wrong? She had been truly touched he had listened to her words and remembered what she had said. Maybe she was reading into it? She didn't dwell on it and took the CDs from him.
Flipping through them she raised a brow," we're these all together? Kinda makes me wonder about the persons taste." She flipped over one," Rolling Stones," then another,"Crosby, stills, and Nash," and then another." smooth sounds, Classic R&B" she chuckled and kept flipping," what about you? Anything you want to hear?" She handed him back the stack, and watched him. You can tell a lot about a man from his choice of music.
