Having fled the chaos in Grand Rapids, the group of friends arrived the small town of Monroe. Instead of taking the highway, they had chosen the safer route by taking the N Custer Road. Unfortunately their car had broken down up the road, and having left it behind, they now approached on foot. Abel walked with caution, scouting ahead with the scope of the rifle he had stolen from back at the refugee camp. If he noticed anything suspicious, he would let his friends know immediately.
Abel didn`t like towns, not anymore, especially after seeing how it all went down back in Detroit, which had been a terrifying experience, for all of them. If they hadn`t been found by the military when they did, then they still probably would have been stuck there, trying to get out. Dense population now meant huge risks of encountering hordes of undead, one mistake and they could end up trapped in some street.
Autumn had already kicked in, it was midday and the sun barely gave any warmth, the cold north wind swept across the landscape, indicating that it wouldn`t be long before the temperature dropped and within a few hours it would get dark. They had to find shelter, sooner or later, and perhaps they could even find few supplies worth taking while they were there.
The road into town seemed safe enough; there was nobody around at the moment. On both sides there were houses, with clear signs that those who had lived there had left in a hurry. Some of the doors were even marked by red charcoal, something they`d seen the military do by the dawn of the outbreak. Some cars stood left abandoned, mostly broken down or torn apart for parts. They could have some fuel worth taking, if they decided to get a transport up and running again.
With a quick glance at those beside him, Abel thought himself lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful women. At College they had barely known each other, only speaking briefly with one another in class. However after their school trip, they had no choice but to stick together, and ever since they`ve remained close friends. Abel thought about his family, wondering if they were still alive. There had been no time to check in on them, after the military arrived they had been isolated, always protected by the soldiers who claimed they couldn`t go outside without permission. Now that they were no longer with them, maybe someday they could visit his home in Midland, if the others wanted too. He wouldn`t just leave his friends behind, it was not who he was, not after everything they`ve been through. In some strange way, they were his family now.
“We should find a place to hold up, at least for the night. We could try and search for supplies before then. What do you think?” Abel asked the group, wondering what they thought about the situation and what to do next.
