Ellena nodded when Kate said that they should get back to the self defense training when things settled back down. And she quietly hoped that these people would make it through the medical check without any surprise bites found or anything like that. The world was bleak enough without having to find people, risk your life brining them in only to find out they were a lost cause. Ellena knew that you could amputate in certain cases. Hell Ray Kelso one of her people had lost his arm to a bite, but they chopped it off and he lived.
Ellena: Let me know if I can help. I'll be around.
Ellena said as she allowed them to continue on without her. Ellena watched as they kept moving towards the medical building. She couldn't help but feel a tiny lump in her chest and she turned her attention back out over the bridge that separated Bell Isle from the rest of the motor city. How many more people are out there just needing someplace safe?
Ellena wanted to help the whole world, but she could only do but so much.

"Man, what I would give for a new sieve...we're gonna need a new pestle and mortar, too. Just chopping dried peppers and vegetables isn't going to be enough. Damn, I need to make another run out there soon.", came a feminine voice from the kitchen. All of the chefs, both sous and head as well as prep, looked at the owner of the voice and immediately relaxed as if it were someone they knew. A woman with wavy deep brown hair came in with her scalp covered by a fresh hairnet and a chef's hat along with a white cooking coat and black apron and elastic plastic gloves. It was their master chef who, in most cases, took the role of both sous and head chef as she walked in with a reddish-brown leather small box case. From the distinct dry smoothness in her hair and the vague heavenly scent of Cherry Blossoms, it could be inferred she had just finished taking a brief shower before her load of the week came in. She brought in packaged, freshly-chopped chunks of venison, pork and beef and put it in the refrigeration unit along with excess temperature-sensitive vegetables and fruits, before filling some of the counter-based fridge units with fresh onions, peppers and other condiments.
With a smile, she set the box she walked in with down and opened it like a chest, and there were 3 blades; a broad chopping knife, a paring knife, and a serrated-edge knife. It seemed she was proud of this trio of knives, like it were a treasure to her from her previous days when the dead didn't rule the country. She had just returned from a supply run, freshened up and cleaned herself, and now was ready to cook!

Chris hopped off of the truck as she watched Kate lead Joseph, Kara, Rizzo, Quentin and Hailey to medical to have them cleared, before she walked up to Ellena who she noticed having a concerned expression on her face, and lightly placed a hand on her shoulder, smiling up at her. "Don't worry, Ellena. We won't let anything happen. Are you up for a spar later?", she asked softly, thinking a good spar will help them both unwind from the tensity of the situation at hand.
Hyatt was outside on the roof where the guard station was, and had a pair of binoculars up to watch for any threats outside of the compound, but he didn't focus on just the bridge. He knew that, being an island, people could just as easily swim to their location. He was scanning the water around them in slow panning slides to watch for swimmers, divers, or some sort of watercraft breaking the surface. To complement, he had a Ruger M77 sniper rifle at the ready for him should he spot anything.

Following Kate inside to one of the exam rooms, Joseph stepped inside as she spoke to one of the other medics, who he presumed would be the one to examine him; after a few unkind thoughts, he hopped onto the exam table. "Okay, if you'll go ahead and get undressed," the medic told him, "we'll get the exam started and out of the way here."
After taking off his shirt and glasses, Joseph climbed off the table, undressed and got back onto the exam table; over the course of the next ten minutes or thereabouts, he was poked, prodded, listened to and examined from head to toe by the medic, who would pause every so often to write a few notes down, Sitting as still he could, Joseph just stared straight ahead, thinking that while the medic was either well-versed in medicine or had picked up stuff on the fly, they were doing a good job.
Eventually, the medic looked over and said, "You can go ahead and get dressed, sir," as she began setting her medical gear back in its' various places around the exam room; as he got dressed, Joseph looked over and asked, "So, did I pass? Fail? What's the verdict, miss..."
"The name's Melissa," the medic replied, flashing a broad smile at him, "and yes, you passed with flying colors. Welcome to Belle Isle, Joseph," pausing to look at the name she'd written on the exam paper.
"Belle Isle, huh?" Joseph said. "Place has changed since I was last here," climbing down off the exam room table and buttoning up his knit shirt, sliding the bottom end of it inside his jeans and straightening himself up a bit. "So anyway, where do I and the others go..."
"Dining hall's on the far end of the building, this floor," Melissa said, closing the exam file and holding it in one hand as she walked to the door and opened it. "This time of day, I'm pretty sure they're fixing dinner for the early shift; Sarah, who's in charge here, will probably want to speak to you and the others who came in today at some point, but unless something changes, welcome to Belle Isle. You're a doctor, right?"
"That's right," Joseph replied, smiling back at her. "Class of 1998, University of Utah Medical School; interned and did a residency at LDS Intermountain in Salt Lake City before going into general practice. Anyway," he said, following her to the door, "nice meeting you, Melissa."

Hailey climbed out of the truck and watched as Kate helped the medics get Quin on the stretcher and followed the duo to one of the exam rooms "can you go to the other room for a checkup miss?" One of the medics asked hailey "I'm ok" she replied "can you just to ma-" "I'm fine!" She interrupted becoming impatient, the medic just turned and walked out if the room not sure what to do, Hailey then sat in a chair next to the window watching as they worked on Quin, they had to put him to sleep as he was unable to stay still while they dug the bullet out from his abdomin, leg and arm, luckily the fourth went straight threw as it was closer to his organs which they would have e careful not to puncture if it hadn't gone through, once the medics had cleared the room hailey fell asleep waiting for Quin to wake up...

"Think he'll make it, Kate?" Natasha asked as her, Kate and Haley sat outside the operating room where they'd just spent about an hour working on repairing, patching and suturing up the wounds on Quentin, the survivor they'd brought in. Leaning back in her seat as she thought over the question, Kate knew the next few days would be vital as to whether Quentin would live or die but the more she thought about it, the more she felt the man would live; at the very least, she felt, they had given the man a fighting chance at living.
"Yeah, I think he'll make it, Nats," Kate replied, leaning forward in her seat and looking inside, where she saw Quentin resting quietly with Hailey sitting nearby, watching him, "but I've never shook so much during an operation--"
"Oh, please," Haley scoffed. "After all the heroic work the six of us medics did when those New Yorkers were here months back, you were the solidest rock of all of us and now you're worried about nerves? Kate, you're the best medic we've got; if your nerves are shaking, what does that say about the rest of us?" It earned her a laser-like death look from Kate; Haley continued on undaunted. "What happened out there, Kate?"
"What happened, Haley," Kate said, "is that we rescued a man who would've died otherwise and brought him, his friend and three others here to Belle Isle, that's what we did, Haley...that's what we did." Getting up from her chair, she added, "I'm going to check in our other newcomers and then I'm going to rest for a little bit. Anyway, if anything changes with Quentin in there, tell me and we'll haul him back into surgery again..."
Rizzo was directed through medical and told to undress. She blushed at first because she'd never undressed in front of anyone, save for the forced incident years ago, and went to be checked up by the examiner. After passing, she got out of the exam room and rested against the wall with a sigh of relief. She hoped Kara and Joseph made it out, and wondered whether Quentin and Hailey were alright and made it through okay.
Stepping out of the exam room with a clean bill of health, Kara adjusted her sheriff's jacket and walked to a nearby bench, where she sat down and thought about the past few days - their fight to survive the bandit attack on the Hampton Inn, their decision to head north and seek new fortunes, their run-in with the people here - everything roiled up inside her for several moments and it was all she could do not to scream out loud as the tension seemed to shake her to and fro.
Settling herself down, Kara looked around and was thankful for two things: (1) that she was still alive and (2) that no one had seen her shaking like she'd been moments earlier. Getting up, she walked around, arms crossed, wondering where Joseph and Rizzo where; as she walked around, she thought about the rest of the Hampton group and wondered if they'd made it to safety somewhere. Stepping aside as someone walked by, Kara looked over and saw Rizzo sitting nearby; walking over, she grabbed a chair and sat down next to her, asking, "How ya' feelin?"

After things had begun to settle down once everyone had returned to Belle Isle, Sarah took a moment to go upstairs and check on both her daughter Meredith and on Elise who was watching her; once she was satisfied things were alright, she headed back downstairs to see how their wounded survivor was doing.
Walking down to Medical, Sarah saw Kate and several other medics sitting outside the recovery room and asked, "How's our gunshot victim doing?"
"Quentin?" Kate replied. "He's doing alright; we got him patched up and he's resting comfortably inside with that little girl of his...Hailey, her name is, sitting nearby," pausing as Sarah peeked inside and quietly shut the door so as not to disturb them. "If he makes it through the next 24-36 hours, he should pull through okay."
"Well, let me know if anything changes; where's our other survivors?" Sarah said, looking around.
"They should be down the hallway there," Haley said, pointing down towards the hallway, in the direction of the building's main staircase. "One of them's a doctor," Kate added, piquing Sarah's interest.
"Oh?" she replied, eyebrow raised. "That should make for an interesting conversation....well, anyway, you keep an eye on Quentin, make sure he recovers fully. Meanwhile, I'll see if I can find our other guests and talk to them a bit."

"Alright, everyone, today's an important day. We got newcomers that have been through Hell and we got rescuers having brought their asses back safely, so let's encourage them with a nice, hearty homecoming meal to satisfy their palate! I swear, if word gets back to me that not one grain of effort reached our customers, Hell will be coming. Let's go!", Clarissa yelled with a fervor only a coach could have as she got the prep work done. An hour or so worth of cooking passed on as a few plates of divided sirloin steaks marinaded with sesame oil as well as a side of cooked green beans, carrots and cauliflower sent out to the people Kate and Chris brought back with them, as well as to Kate and Chris themselves, each server coming to each personally.
Chris took the unexpected food with a blink before walking inside to try and find Kate, expecting she may be in Medical and so went inside with her food, "Kate? Ka--oh, hello, Sarah. How are the newcomers going?", she asked upon catching up to Kate with Sarah beside her.
Post by Sarah Sharpe on Jan 8, 2017 22:54:55 GMT -5
"They're doing alright, Chris; all of them passed Medical and with the exception of Quentin," Sarah said, sitting down as the servers presented everyone involved with plates of sirloin steak, green beans, carrots and cauliflower to enjoy, courtesy of Clarissa and Belle Isle's kitchen staff, "none of them are injured. Quentin had gunshot wounds, but Kate and company patched him up and got his wounds treated." Taking a bite of steak, Sarah savored the food, a welcome sight in the cold of winter. In between bites of vegetables, she said, "There were five overall - Joseph, Kara, Rizzo, Quentin and Hailey - and Joseph, if Kate was correct, is a doctor, so that should help our fortunes immensely for down the road," pausing to eat some more of the steak and vegetables.
Looking over at Chris, Sarah asked, "So anyway, how'd things go out there?" Sarah asked, hoping to know more about what had transpired outside the wire, especially given Sarah's plans for expanding Belle Isle's reach and control over the Motor City and its' surroundings.

Chris took some bites of her own cooked vegetables such as her carrots as she took her seat next to Kate, and smiled as she ate the food as if she found it was such a nice reward for the risk of getting almost killed outside of Belle Isle, and started to cut into her steak when she heard Sarah speak and then ask her a question. Opting to swallow first, Chris lightly hammered her hand against her chest after having a tiny bit of trouble to get her steak down her throat and coughed lightly to clear her throat before she answered Sarah, her green eyes on the boss herself, "It was rough, honestly. We don't know how dense the zombie population is out there, or how dangerous it is; we only had a couple come after us at the cathedral, but more could've shown up since we left in the pick-up..."

"It was rough, honestly. We don't know how dense the zombie population is out there, or how dangerous it is; we only had a couple come after us at the cathedral, but more could've shown up since we left in the pick-up..." Chris's words brought a chill to the air; even with the four-year anniversary - if one could call the end of the world as one knew it back then an 'anniversary' - of the Great Panic coming up, walkers were still a problem they ran into, even in the coldest parts of winter.
Even so, Sarah was still glad that everyone had made it back and said as much. "Well, the important thing, Chris, is that everyone made it back here alive. Rome wasn't built in a day and the reclamation of the Motor City won't happen overnight." Looking away for a few moments, she continued. "It took almost two years or so just to push our boundaries out to where Jefferson Avenue is and that's only about a mile or so from the riverbank itself; the past year or so, we've been able to push out further but its' been a push-pull kind of thing, Chris: we push the boundaries out further, everything else - walkers, bandits, the elements - pull some of our gains back...but reclaim the city we will and I've got a few ideas stirring at the moment." Eating the last of her steak and vegetables, Sarah held out a fork as if it were a pointer and added, "That said, we've got to find out where those beasties are located at and deal with them out there," stabbing at the air a moment or two, "as best we can without taking on too many risks.
"Then again, life itself as we've seen over the years, can be a risk all its own," Sarah added, pausing as she set her fork down on her plate and pulled from her back jeans pocket a map of the Detroit area with several markings on it. "Before they built the monstrosity that was Detroit-Wayne County Airport, most of the air traffic in and out of Detroit came through Coleman Young Airport. Now, this may sound risky as hell, but I want to turn that place into a functioning outpost and ultimately a self-sustaining settlement...but first, we need to know what's out there. I'm going to pass the word around Belle Isle for volunteers, but I wanted to run the idea by you and Kate first, then by Hyatt and Ellena.
"Is it risky?" Yes, is it: that airport's about six klicks away - make it about four miles or so as the crow flies - but it's in a perfect location for us; far enough to allow us to lure walkers away from Belle Isle and from Detroit, but close enough so that if things get hairy, everyone there can roll right back here in a flash if needed." Pausing to take a couple of long, deep breaths, Sarah added, "I think we can do it....what do you think, Chris?"
Post by Christensen McCready-Bates on Jan 11, 2017 19:03:32 GMT -5
Chris finished her food as well and remained sitting while holding her empty plate--save for the few pieces of vegetable and meet that survived being cut by Chris--and listened to Sarah explain about the airport and the necessity of capturing it and possibly the area around it. If one thing her little expedition outside taught her, is that a certain lesson also needed to be taught to the trainees, which brought a little grin to Chris' face as she looked up at Sarah, "It's possible, and I think the odds my be better in our favor if everyone, or at least who is going on said excursion to claim this airport of ours, need a crash course in self-defense...because out there, shouldn't gunfire be a last resort? Kate, would you like to learn my style of self-defense?", she asked her wife with a light tilt to her head.

Finishing up her own plate of steak and vegetables, Kate had been almost absent-mindedly following along with the conversation between Sarah and Chris when Chris turned and asked Kate, "Kate, would you like to learn my style of self-defense?"
Staring straight ahead for a few seconds, Kate glanced over at her wife, smiled and nodded her head, saying, "Yeah, definitely. Its' always good to learn something new...and as Sarah loves to point out every so often, 'Never stop learning', pausing when she heard someone running towards them. "What's wrong?" she asked the man.
"We got somebody coming across the MacArthur Bridge," the man said; Kate's ears perked and she thought, Gods, did we leave someone behind? as she waited for orders from Sarah.
Post by Sarah Sharpe on Jan 11, 2017 22:28:05 GMT -5
Before Sarah could answer Chris's concerns - and they were very valid concerns, she mused - someone ran up to them and told them someone was crossing the MacArthur Bridge. In this weather, they'll freeze to death if we don't get to them now, she thought, asking the man, "Walker or..."
"No, human, definitely human," the man said, running back in the general direction he'd come from. Getting up, Sarah said, "Looks like we're picking up someone...Chris, you and Kate head down to the bridge, pick up the survivor and get them back here ASAP, understood?" Before anyone left, she added sotto voce, "Remind me, Chris, to answer those concerns you brought up later on, okay? Now go get that survivor and bring them back here, okay?"
Post by Christensen McCready-Bates on Jan 11, 2017 23:00:36 GMT -5
Chris noticed something off about Kate, she seemed so...absent, silent even as such a conversation was going on. Chris could deduce that something was on her mind, but before she could ask what it was, an alert came up in the form of a man, one of Sarah's men it seemed, and told that there was someone at the gate. Chris stood up, her staff across her back as a sort of holster when she wasn't using it, and held her plate abreast as if he would get rid of it herself, but spoke regardless, "Got it, Sarah. Kate, are you ready? It looks like you'll get your crash course if someone tries anything at the gate. Hyatt must be at the guard station up top, watching this...it's a good sign we don't hear gunfire, that would be a sniper's nest up there."
Post by Quentin Lee on Jan 12, 2017 1:21:00 GMT -5
The nurse that hailey had snapped at had cracked the door and peaked her head before she spoke "hungry?" Hailey didn't answer as she was in a dead sleep at the edge of The bed, the nurse then walked around the bed and set the tray on the end table before walking back outside, about an half hour later Hailey had awoken to someone rushing down the hall, she got up from the bed and twisted as she put her feet on the floor and pushed off the bed as she stood up, she didn't notice the food as she still felt groggy, she rubbed her eyes as she made her way around the bed and walked out the door and down the hall in the direction she heard the footsteps go
"Got it, Sarah. Kate, are you ready? It looks like you'll get your crash course if someone tries anything at the gate. Hyatt must be at the guard station up top, watching this...it's a good sign we don't hear gunfire, that would be a sniper's nest up there." She felt she owed these people a lot and decided to help "I'm coming"

Hyatt must be at the guard station up top, watching this...it's a good sign we don't hear gunfire, that would be a sniper's nest up there." Chris said as her and Kate took off for the bridge, soon joined by Hailey, who had for whatever reason decided to tag along with them.
"Yeah, let's roll, babe," Kate replied, keeping pace with Chris step-by-step; as they walked along, Kate added, "I would've said something when Sarah was talking about that new outpost idea of hers' but I wanted to think about that plan a bit; I just didn't know we were going to be picking up someone else after having already brought in a couple people today," glancing over at smiling at Hailey. "And speaking of people," she added, "how are you and Quentin doing? More importantly, how's he doing? He resting comfortably and all?"

Chris looked at Hailey with a mix of surprise and concern, and patted her shoulder gently before speaking, "In any other circumstance, I'd welcome the company, but you just got here...don't you want to rest some first?", she asked the girl softly, then looked up at Kate as if wondering what her input was on this.
