Hearing McKenna's words, Tegan took off in the direction she thought their would-be attacker would take; all around, she could hear the alarms going off inside the mess hall, the sound of doors being shut, of guards standing tight.....but she couldn't get her mind off of Julie; rounding a corner, she had but a moment to duck as someone swung at her, just barely taking off her neck in the process!
Ducking back and doing a backward roll to gain some distance, Tegan recoiled in horror....it was Beckett! The same one they'd rescued back at Yankee Stadium, the same man they'd tried to befriend and treat like a human being....it was Beckett, of all people! With a venom to her eyes, Tegan took off her jacket and tossed it aside, motioning for him to come at her. "Come at me, you sick bastard," she said to him venomously, "come on!"
For several minutes, the two of fought a battle to the death; while Beckett had her outmatched in height and mad strength, he didn't have Tegan's former military bearing on his side...for every thrust and strike Beckett made, Tegan parried and blocked them; each time, she struck Beckett, sending him reeling backwards....all the while remembering that Beckett was still wielding that butcherous knife of his, a knife that she hoped hadn't just killed her wife. Still, they fought on and on....until Beckett made one move too many and lunged towards Tegan with a mad rush; dodging his lunge, Tegan grabbed his arm and bent it up backwards, enough to hear the bones in his hand and then his forearm crack and break, causing Beckett to howl in agony and shrieking pains.
This gave Tegan the opportunity to draw a switchblade she'd started carrying for situations like this; drawing it, she flicked the long, thin blade open and drove it straight into Beckett's head, entering at the eye and going straight into the brain. Without waiting, she turned him around and drove him right into the wall, driving his head into it with enough force to drive the switchblade all the way into his brain, the tip of the blade just piercing the back of his skull. Stepping back to let the now-dead Beckett fall to the floor, Tegan didn't feel any satisfaction or glee in killing him; though she'd killed before, this was the first up-close and personal kill she'd ever performed and it didn't thrill her....though, she mused, at least Beckett won't be attacking anyone else from now on.
Walking back around the corner, she knelt down beside Julie and Major McKenna, who seemed to have the situation under control. "How's she doing?" Tegan asked, gripping Julie's hand as they knelt there.
"She'll live; it was a superficial wound," McKenna replied. "What happened to you? Did you get the bastard?"
After a few moments, Tegan nodded. "Yeah, I got him....he's hanging ten on the floor, around the corner....switchblade to the dome, right through the eye."
