Keira's eyes scanned her surroundings as she drove, their car making quick work of the street. When she had traveled to New York on foot, it had taken her almost a week to get there, and if she hadn't met Omar and gained access to this car, it would have been almost another week to return to Roland. She knew that he was fine, had to tell herself that to keep her sanity, and the relief of cutting her return time to around five hours took a small weight off of her conscience. They had gotten lucky so far in the sense that Marienville, Pennsylvania was a small town home to more lush greenery than traffic and people, so the beaten up road that they traveled on didn't hold many obstacles. They had been driving for a few hours now, passing the occasional walker, and while it wasn't a throng of the enemy, seeing them close to the treeline made her anxious nonetheless.
"You're a terrible DJ," she said, her teasing voice breaking the silence of the car. They had engaged in some small talk, but the passenger of the car controlling the music was a classic staple to the American road trip. But with the radios out of commission in terms of music, and without any CDs in the car, they were treated to the low hum of static through the speakers if they chose to try and listen. "But that's okay. I play a mean game of I-Spy. I'm basically undefeated."
It was silly and whimsical, but it cut through the danger on the road well enough. She was happy to be reaching her brother so quickly, but she knew that Omar's own sister was back home, and while she was safe within the Hive, leaving family was never easy, especially when it came to small children. She glanced around the dilapidated road and saw nothing but trees, cement, and sky. She hummed and let her eyes trail about the car, and when they finally rested on the dashboard, she smirked just barely. "I spy with my little eye, something that is green."
They drove for a few more minutes, but as they approached a fork in the road, she pulled off to the side and put the car in park. "We'll have to walk from here. I live a bit off into the woods, and I don't want to risk the car getting stuck. We'll be faster on foot than trying to navigate stumps and ditches." She knew it was a good call, but decided to wait and hear his response before getting out. It was his community's car, and she didn't know how he felt about leaving it for the moment.
