Max awoke the next morning. He had barely slept, who could. There were new people, makers outside the walls. Important member were gone, and people had died. Who could sleep, rest, relax during all that. Certainly not him. He sat up in bed, looking over at Abbh's figure still shadowed in the early morning. The sun was just rising, coming up over the trees to cast through the windows.
He didn't know if she was asleep, or awake, but he didn't say anything as he slipped out of bed.
They had finished the medical checks, and got the barn back set up. The people had a place to sleep once again, the only heat there bodies together. Over 17 people in one room, it stayed warm. Not like it was in the house. There was no heating, you had blanket over blanket to beat the cold winter and snow.
He stopped moving toward a window to look up at it. The towers were bare, but there was someone on the gate. They didn't have enough people to have some one watch all night. Everyone had pulled double duty all through the day, he let them rest. But soon he knew Amber would have a few ordered up there.
He hoped today would go better, but seriously doubted it would. There was always something. Gone were the days when he could just farm, and look after the house. They would need a run soon, to a hospital for medicine and supplies. The group was in need of it.
Bethany woke up before the others, having slept on the couch in the front room downstairs. She couldn't complain after sleeping on a floor so many times. It was old, but comfortable. She didn't sleep long though. She knew without someone in the watch tower and limited bodies to protect, she would have to keep watch at the gate.
It was still dark out with a little spark left in the fireplace to keep them all warm and while the others slept, she threw a few more logs on the fire which slowly started to roar back up again. She bundled up, packed her weapons and started towards the porch where she would just keep a watchful eye out. To keep herself warm, she knew she had to keep moving and she would circle the house, sticking close to the frame in case there was trouble. When the sun finally rose and there was no sign of Thad, she looked back to the house with a weary glance. Amber was going to go with her to find him, but she wanted to go now. She struggled with that concept and slowly made her way towards the gate, stopping occassionally to wait for Amber to see if she would come out the front door.

Amber didn't know if Bethany had slept at all even. She didn't want her running on fumes, not if they were to be going outside the wall. She got that she was worried about Thad, but there was no point hurting yourself over it.
Amber walked forward, out of the barn. She herself had only gotten a few hours. By the time everyone was settled it was late. Add to that people didn't sleep. They were up talking, hushed whispers here and there. They gossiped and talked about what happened just hours before. How could they sleep at a time like now.
When it was time to get up, before sun rise, Amber was up. She had her fest pulled tight, hair pulled up, and boots laced. Adding a pair of fingerless gloves, and a puffy winter jacket she made her way out of the barn. Soon she was across the grass toward one of the vehicles. She didn't have access to the Knight as Sarah had suggested, but they could take one of the others. The SUV was gone, as was the corvette. That still left the Humvee, and another compact car.
Amber u looked the car, placing her rifle on the roof. She waited for Bethany to come over. "Let's go. Before we wake the others. Tower said they saw Thad heading east, so we'll go that way."
She climbed into the car and started it up. Stepping forward she opened the gate. Pulling the car through she stopped just before it. She closed it behind the and the. Slowly got back in. After that she pulled down the road, turn in east on the highway.
She didn't know where Thad would be, but he was her friend. She knew he wouldn't be far. Bethany probably didn't want her to go, but she had to. She couldn't go alone. Plus Thad was he friend, she knew him even before all this started. Back before he was the man he was today, with out the beard and long hair. When he was fresh, new. They didn't train together but did serve briefly together at the start of their careers. They wouldn't meet up again till outbreak day.
Abby had drifted in and out of sleep. Max being with her beneath the blankets gave her body heat. When he got up he took that with him. She laid there, listening. He hadn't left the room. Slowly she rolled over. Her eyes watched his back, wondering what he was thinking.
She knew yesterday had been hell for the farm. Just a shitty set of circumstances all at once. She laid there thinking of how the day had just taken a horrible turn. The farm was barely surviving. " Penny for your thoughts." She said softly. Part of her just wanted to give up on this place. To just get Sarah and walk away. Part of her wanted to stay. Safety in numbers and everyone working together for survival. Least they had food and water. She eased up and rubbed her eyes," today has to be better, right?"

Max turned when he heard Abby speak. He listened, watching her, his pregnant fiancé in bed. He couldn't believe he could say that, something he never thought he would have. A wife, a kid, a home. He'd come along way, this had changed him for the better.mfor once the apocalypse wasn't shit, this brief moment of sunshine and rainbows.
He nodded, "it has to get better. I don't want to jinx it, but I don't think it could get worse. We'll have everyone back by the end of the day, it will be good. Not like it could get worse, people dieing, running off, feuds, rivals, strangers showing up. It defiantly can't get worse. Only thing would be if the sick fuck from the junk yard showed his face. But after almost a year, I doubt that will happen."
He looked around, "take some time to relax, myou deserve it. Organizing all those people, putting up with my bullshit. You're a trooper, the Rock of the farm." He came and sat back down on the bed, taking Abby's hand in his own. "We'll have to be better. Take a moment to ourselves."
Just then he heard s knock on the door, followed by a voice. Seemed like the fun was just starting, again.
Jack had made his way out of the barn. He wanted to stop at the house quickly before he checked in with Amber or Max on what he had to do today. He saw himself up in a tower, most of the day sitting with a rifle or binoculars in his lap. At least he could read or soemthi while he did that, it also presented a good chance to just think, be with himself.
He entered through the doors and smiled as he saw Louis in the kitchen, hurrying around as usual. "Seen Max, or Amber," he asked calmly.
"Amber left with Bethany," Louis said calmly, "Max isn't up yet."
"Alright, guess I'll just head to the tower."
Just then a girl burst through the door. "The baby's coming. Dean is helping her to the medic bay. I'll get Brian, you need to get Abby, Sarah, and Max."
Jack nodded. "On it." He ran up the stairs, stopping at Max and Abby's door he knocked on it.
"Hope I'm not interrupting but, uh, one of the pregnant girls the babies coming, it's time. Dean and Brian are on it, but they need more help." He said not waiting for a response.
Jack moved to Sarah's room. He didn't know if she was in there. He heard she was going with Bethany to find Thadd, but the knight was still there. As far as he was concerned they would need her, she was motherly. He knocked on her door.
"Sarah, are you in there?" He said through the door.
Lloyd let out a stretch and a yawn as he woke up, surprised when his hand brushed against someone else. He patted them a few times, realizing he was touching someone's head, then he remembered he was packed into a barn with others in similar situations to his. "Sorry mate...been a while since I've slept with other people around. Hope I didn't poke anything." He gathered up his coat which he had used as a pillow and put it on as he walked outside the barn. He pulled out the pack of cigarettes he carried, noting it was starting to get light and sighed, he'd need to find more soon. Flicking his lighter and getting it started he let out a puff and leaned against the barn. He watched a small rush and heard talk about a baby being born and figured that he wouldn't be much help there, just get in the way. He decided to instead walk around the yard, see if there was anywhere else his services could be used.
Paul awoke to someone grabbing his head. He sat straight up, looking at Llyod. "No harm done man," he said rubbing his eyes. He decided he could watch Lloyd, make sure he did t do anything. With Bethany and Amber preparing to leave he entrusted himself to do it. It wasn't assigned, he chose to.
He looked around at the tarted room, swinging his legs out, he watched LLoyd walk away and picked himself out of bed.slowly he pulled on a jacket and a fresh shirt, well as fresh as could be.
He made his way out of the barn, careful not to wake anyone else. He made his way across the yard. There were only two out of the three towers occupied, but he doubt he could be of much use there. The people in the house were probably planning something, so he would steer clear till they called for him to aid.
He made his way to the centre bomfire pit, opting to just sit and watch the morning sky.
Bethany turned back as Amber started up the Humvee, which was the same one they used to go to the empty convenience store. She looked into the seat where Tyler sat before seeing a few drops of his blood on the seat.
"Tyler's blood. I can't believe he kept getting bit such a secret."
She shook her head and sat anyways, smudging the droplets as she closed the door and checked her gun.
"Why do you think he did that? Didn't he realize he would turn?" She didn't know anything about the kid as Amber drove through the gate, waving behind and closing it as they started out to the road. They were going to look for Thad and she really had no idea where he could have gone. Considering he was gone the entire night, he must have found a place to hole up. She wondered if he found a safe place if he would even return.
Well, he was right about half of it. It couldn't get worse, right? She watched him come over and sit down. Abby could smell something, Louis was up and cooking. Her stomach growled. " god, I am hungry." She leaned up and rubbed her stomach. " I think he or she is too." Abby chuckled about what she said." Wish I knew what it was. Sarah and I have been talking about old wives tales about you can determine sex, but we haven't tried any yet."
A knock on the door interrupted her response to his offer of them spending time together. She heard what was going on and quickly got out of bed. She was dressed in sweat pants and a tee shirt. None of her old clothes would hardly fit anymore. Her breasts had gotten bigger and her belly was poking out now. You could definitely tell she was pregnant since she was t wearing the man's flannel and bib overalls. She slipped her feet into her sneakers and tucked the laces. She struggled a bit to bend down and tie her shoes, so this worked just as well. She opened their door as she heard the news barer knocking on Sarah's door.
Abby bolted down stairs and out into the porch. She saw Paul and the new man," hey," she waved them to come to her," get the generator going and start the fire going, we need hot water, boiled and sterilized." She went back inside and saw Louis in the kitchen," towels, we have clean towels, right?" She started past him to the laundry room. She knew what to do and what to expect, Brian had been talking to her about things for when her own time came.

Max heard the knock, and glanced at the door. Abby rushed out and he simply shook his head. He quickly dressed pulling on a pair of jeans and an old shirt. He added a checkered over shirt over it. Adding a pair of boots and his belt with with a gun holster he made his way out into the hall. He took the stairs down, stopping at the bottom.
He came up beside Abby on the porch, watching her shout orders at a few in the yard. Max watched them, leaning on the porch rail. Abby moved off, disappearing through the kitchen.
He followed, passing Louis, Margret, and Kira hard at work. "There more towels upstairs," he said looking at the curly red head, watching her quickly run off to find them.
Max came up behind Abby. "Not so fast. She's not even in the house yet," he said calmly, "what do you need me to do? Brian and Dean have this, they can handle it. Don't stress yourself."
He could admit he didn't know what to do. Put him in a room with any man, any woman and he could tell you a hundred way to kill them with his hands. He can take apart and reassemble every gun blind folded, and know how to hunt, track, shoot, gut, skin, clean, and cook many animals found in the wild. But this was something he knew nothing of.
But he hoped Brian could do this. He needed him to. If he couldn't, they'd have to find another solution for Abby. Brian had another shot after this, there were three. One died in the barn, the other was now, that left one other and Abby. Abby wouldn't die because of this.
Sarah wasn't sure when she had fallen asleep. She was curled up in a chair near the bed. She had been staring out the window and must have eventually dosed off. She lowered the blanket and glanced at the bed. Jay was curled up asleep. The knock had woken her, but not him. She crossed to the door and opened it, pulling the blanket tighter around her," I will be right down." She saw Max leave his room and head down stairs. She frowned seeing him. Sarah knew how worried he was about Abby, she felt the same. She wondered if he would still think the same about her belief if he knew how much she prayed for Abby and his child.
Sarah smiled at Jack," thanks for getting me." She closed the door and dropped and folded the blanket. She slipped on her boots and tied them, sitting back down in the chair to do so. A new baby, what this could mean. She sat there hands grasped together, elbows on knees." Oh Dear god, please let this happen smoothly and alleviate fears." She said amen and stood up and left the room after kissing Jay on his forehead.
Sarah headed straight down towards the kitchen. Everyone was busy moving and setting up. She headed in to Brian," what do you need me to do?"
Brian was preping the med bay. He has some scrubs set out for Dean. He wore a butchers apron. He had some stuff set up. Admittedly Brian didn't know what to do. He had never done this before. He was t trained to deliver babies. He could fix a wound and heal bullet fire. But he didn't know how to deliver a baby.
Sure he may of had read on it, or knew how long ago. But he didn't remember how. He didn't even know where to start with all this. He kept saying he wasn't an actual doctor. A combat medic was far from one. But still he would try. Ultimately this was all up him to figure out. Dean could help, ur he was inexperienced as well.
He hesrd Sarah come in and looked up. "Hey uh I'm not sure," he said looking at her. "I don't want this place to cramped. With Dean, Becky, and myself. I don't want more people then needed. I'm nervous too. I don't think I can do this. I have no training, I've never done this."
Jack nodded. "Not a problem." He saw Max go downstairs, followed by Sarah. Kira soon came up and together he and her gathered what ever towels were in the closet.
"Can't believe this is happening," he said calmly, "a baby in this world. Wonder how it will be."
Kira didn't say anything just quickly moved downstairs. Jack followed, keeping close. He saw Abby and approached her. "Alright I have the towels. There's enough of you in here, should be fine. I'll head to s tower, start on watch. If you need anything just call."
Jack made his way inside and up into a tower. He saw Becky and Dean below, both helping the pregnant girl up and into the house. In the other towers were Joseph and Memphis, both with various rifles. The farm had eyes in the sky again, was under watch for the time being.
Lloyd turned Abby came over to him and listened. He let out a sigh as the woman ran off, dropping his cigarette to the ground and stamping it. "Looks like I'm getting put to work already. Must say, delivering a baby is a new thing for me mate, what about you?" He asked Paul, sighing again. "Well, can you lead the way? Not quite sure where those things are."
Abby stood in the laundry room, and turned as Max came in. "I can do this, I have to do this, let me do what I can, okay?" She glanced over as Jack came in with towels, 'thanks." She nodded as he said he was going back outside and gonna take watch in one of the towers.
Abby turned back to Max, "please, I will just get this stuff going, I need to know what to expect when it is my turn." She hoped he would see this was important to her. He couldn't lock her up in a bubble. This was he chance to find out how it all worked, and she needed to know. Abby was hoping this would get her over her nerves about having her baby.
Sarah stared at Brian, and she walked closer to him and placed her hands on his shoulders, 'Stop doubting yourself, you will do everything you can, it's all you can do." She smiled at him, "don't get in your own head, you have to relax, let the knowledge come to you." She let go and stepped back from him. She glanced around and saw how he had laid things out, "I will go and see what I can do, Abby had people get towels, do you want some in here now, or should we wait for you to call for them? " She moved towards the door, and paused, "they are bringing her in now, I will be in the kitchen, just yell if you need anything."
"Think it's new for everyone," Paul said standing up and running his hands on his pants. "I doubt we'll actually be in there, nor do I want to be. I'll stay as far away as I can. I'll help, but as long a sits outside of the room. Not on my bucket list." He looked at Abby, watching her disappear into the house. He turned back to Lloyd.
"Alright fire pit is here," he said pointing to the pit he was just sitting at. "Saw you flipping that lighter, think you should be able to light it. If not use these." He said tossing a pack of matches. Paul made his way around the house, to the two large generators they had at the side. He flipped them on, yanking on the cord for it to start.
Once it roared to life he made his way back to Lloyd. "Alright, now we can get the water from inside. Or directly from the well."
"Yeah you're right. This just.. It just means a lot. They need this for hope. Max, Abby, the farm. If I can't deliver that... I don't want to let them down. Anyone down. Dean can take charge in this, he at least knows what to do. I'm more skilled, but he has the street knowledge and history to back it," Brian said rubbing the thigh of his missing leg.
He looked at her. "Bring the towels in, we can keep it off to the side." He looked at the floor. "I have only experienced all this, from the other side. My wife, three times. I know what to expect, what she'll be going through. But I don't know what to do doctor wise. At this point I'm acting more as a nurse. It will be fine. Someone should be in here though, someone to comfort her, or be there for her. I think Abbymwants to."
He moved forward. "Alright, everyone else besides Becky, Dean, Abby, and I should all be out of here. If they need they can wait in the living room. If not, continue on as normal. Louis is going to keep boiling water, and Kira and Margaret will run it back and forth. We can do this."
The girl came in and Dean had her lie down. They waited till everyone was in the room before he closed the door, preparing to get to work.
