“I’ll leave you to it, then,” Evelyn said when Shauna mentioned finding blankets. She had already claimed one of the bedrooms as her own, and the bed was fully made, so she had no need to search for bedding. There were a few other empty rooms with pre-made beds, too, but maybe they all wanted to sleep together in the same room, and that’s why they needed blankets. It was none of her business what they did; she planned on sleeping in her chosen room alone. With the door locked.
Once she was back down on the second floor and in the room alone, she let herself relax a little. She stayed fully dressed and lay down on top of the covers, sinking into the softness of the mattress with a sigh. It had been a while since she’d slept in a bed. The past few months she’d been mostly sleeping in her car.
She hadn’t meant to fall asleep yet-- she still planned on reading one of the books from the bookshelf-- but before she knew it she was drifting off.
In her half-asleep haze, she thought she felt the bed move, like someone was sitting on it, but that was impossible because she’d locked the door behind her. There was a small noise, quiet and familiar, and her heart clenched.
“Mommy,” a child’s whisper said. “where’s Loretta? What happened to Loretta, mommy? What happened to her?”
Evelyn’s eyes snapped open and she sighed loudly into the empty room. It looked like it was going to be one of those nights. She resigned herself to getting very little sleep and got off the bed to retrieve one of the books after all, hoping she could make her mind focus on something else so she could get at least a couple hours of sleep.
