"What exactly is Riker's island? Is it safe?"
"Only the biggest jail complex in America," Daniel replied, hearing Tory's question, adding, "or, at least it was before the world fell apart, kid." Sitting down, he told them about the island and its' inhabitants since the apocalypse...."..right now, there's several hundred of us there, a mix of former jail guards, staff, inmates, plus survivors from throughout the Big Apple and elsewhere that we've run into on supply and scavenge runs. We have an open-door policy whenever we run into any survivors - that's why I asked earlier if any of you wanted to go to the Island, back in the firetruck on the way here; anytime we run into survivors, we always ask. Even if everytime you ask, the answer's no, its' still good to let survivors that there's at least one safe place around.
"There's food, shelter....but you gotta' pull your weight, and you've also got to be handy on the steel when you're outside, which," looking around for a moment before continuing, "some of you are definitely good at...." Remembering Michael's words about their options leaving the city, Daniel took out his map and began looking at it, giving a running inventory as he looked at it. "Your best routes out of the city are to the east and the north; to the north, you can take either 95 or 87 out. 95'll take you into Connecticut, 87'll take you up the Hudson River; furthest any of us on the Island have ever gone up that way is just below West Point. Rumor has it that there's still a functioning garrison on the Plain up there; that's one option.
"You can head east, out onto Long Island. There's a few ways to go out that way - the LIE, the Northern State and Southern State Parkways are still relatively open all the way out to Hempstead and Meadowbrook, but given the weather and the general state of the roads in New York State, don't be surprised if there are potholes - and that's putting it mildly - beyond that point.
"South of here....unless you like dealing with marauding bands of gangs, walkers, bandits and various other bad dudes, don't bother traveling south of the Queens-Midtown Expressway. We don't even travel south of the QME unless we know exactly where we're headed and what we're going there for. Ditto for Brooklyn, though rumor has it, back when everything was falling apart, the government sealed off JFK as a refugee center. You can take the Van Wyck there and back from Rikers; we've used that highway on a few occasions to get around roadblocks on the streets below it but like Long Island, its' driver beware....
"As for west of here...the only routes that come to mind are the George Washington," pointing towards in the general direction of the nearby bridge, "and the Tappen Zee further up-river. Both will take you across the Hudson and both are located in what we think are relatively safe locations."
Putting the map back in his pocket, Daniel added, "Those are your options, ladies and gentlemen. You all are more than welcome to come to Rikers' with us; even if you decide not to, my people and I will help protect you for as long as you're in the city."
