Was it that obvious? He thought and became nervous, not really knowing how to respond to that without mentioning how he felt. It was a conversation he wasn`t comfortable in sharing, and she was almost a stranger to him, having only spoken a few times since he arrived. “I`m…I`m alright, don`t you worry, I just…” He stopped for a moment and turned to the table, picking up the coffee as he continued. “I was just out working before anyone else got up today, I finally finished the watchtower.” James said trying to smile as he took a sip from the cup. “Not that anyone really cares.” He joked, but kind of meant it.
With his coffee in one hand, he grabbed a piece of bread and cheese with the other, turning to sit down on the edge of the bed again, looking out the window. Outside he spotted two birds flying by, landing in a nearby tree. It made him think about relationships, how everyone else seemed to have someone to care for, even the birds had wasn`t alone. He relieved a heavy sigh as he turned his gaze back at June, wondering how she was doing in all of this.
“So, what`s your plan for the day? Has Colette given you a job yet?” He asked curious, wanting to get to know her better. She seemed nice, not like most others who blamed him for everything. He had seen her with the girl Lily many a times, and their relationship had intrigued him, were they together? He didn`t really know, but if so, good for them.
Sam unfurled herself from Damon and actually gave a little groan. She wanted to do something for him, but still wanted the calm she had discovered sitting there.
She was barefoot and still in her pajamas, that consisted of yoga pants and a tank top. She glanced at the door," do you smell coffee?" She headed to the door and opened it a little taking a whiff as she did," I smell coffee!" It was embarrassing getting that excited over something as simple as coffee. She grinned at him," do you drink it? Cream, sugar, or black?" She was ready to go and see what kind of food she could find. The coffee had actually made her mouth water. She figured this might be a good sign, but she should probably go slow. She had t eaten much at all in the past two weeks.
She waited for his answer, then stepped out into the hall. She paused and stuck her head in," um where is the kitchen?" She thought for a moment and then shrugged," never mind, I'll just follow my nose." She headed off then, leaving the door slightly ajar. This was her first chance to explore. She hadn't felt much like being up and about, or being around people.
S walked into the large bar room and stared at those inside. She knew Andrei and moved over towards him," um, would it be alright if I get coffee and some food and take back to my room? I'm actually hungry."
Holly stood their in his room for a few seconds. She was completely shocked. Had he just hit on her? Her mind was so focused on what he had said about the drink she had forgotten what he said about going on a run, at first. It slammed back into her head. Stupid ass! She thought as she went out of the room and went looking for him.
She could hear voices and one she recognized. Luca. Nope. She wasn't even going to get involved in that. Instead she turned back around at the corner and went towards the bar. She hurried and came in just as Sam hand walked up to Andrei. Holly glanced around and then headed for Andrei as well. She smiled at Sam and the. Moved in close to Andrei and whispered in his ear. She to him how Simon was up and about and taking about making a supply run in his condition. She figured Andrei wod be better to handle this than her. Simon didn't seem the type to take recommendations from a woman about his health.

Damon chuckled slightly at Samantha's groan. It reminded him of waking up hungover. He heard Sam ask what type of coffee he would like to which he grinned for a second. Back in his old university he would made a rude joke. He was feeling a bit low on energy so replied "Two sugars and some milk if by some miracle they have any. To be honest anything will be great... Thanks."
Damon sat up and opened his wallet looking at a few pictures he had salvaged before the lights went down. He had one with his mother at University, one playing cricket with his dad. A photo with his cousins. The only one he could ever hope to see was his cousin Mathew, in jail at some prison when the outbreak began. He had been locked up for drug smuggling and grand theft auto weeks before the outbreak.
He then saw a photo he hadn't even looked at for nine months. One in his 20th Birthday in a restaurant. It had friends and even Lara in it. A happy moment yet now he felt nothing for it. He was not the same person as in the photo. It just seemed like a time he didn't want to remember. He took out a lighter and set it alight in his hand before binning the ashes.
He was wandering where Sam was at this point and sat back with the door open keeping an eye open.
“Check out the chick magnet,” Lily teased upon seeing Sam and Holly gravitate towards Andrei. She left the room momentarily and came back with a tray from the breakfast she prepared. The smell of pancakes with syrup would've hit the group's nose by the time she got back to the bar's counter.
“I hope you folks are ready to weep for joy because we have pancakes.”
Lily set out plates and passed around silverware for those near the counter before she'd make the rounds around the tables, and naturally saving a plate for herself and June. There were still bread and cheese left over for anyone who wasn't feeling in the pancakes mood, or if they got in when they ran out.
“You all better eat up because I don't want to hear any hungry complaints later because you were too busy to eat breakfast.”
Lily looked over to Sam as she headed to the coffee maker.

Candy took June's reassurances to heart, but in the end she still wasn't completely sure that Colette's people wouldn't throw everyone they didn't like to the wolves. So far, so good. Glancing to Leigh, the older girl seemed to like them, adding more weight to June's words. With those thoughts still whirling away, June excused herself a little bit. Candy snapped out of her thoughts, and shifted her gaze on June's coffee. ”Okay.”
The coffee... it called to her. Her fears faded to the back of her mind, curiosity growing to the forefront. The changing and growing cast over by the bar drew, if Lily didn't notice maybe the rest wouldn't care about June's coffee. With something of a mischievous glint, Candy looked back to Leigh. Surely Leigh wouldn't tattle, so the curious little girl, thinking and moving like she was super sneaky, took up the coffee.
Immediate and total regret turned her young face sour. June's coffee was safe, Candy setting back on the table. She looked desperately to Leigh, and around the pool table. But there was nowhere to spit the coffee out. As if taking a spoonful of castor oil. She hopped, jumped and threw her arms about at taking down one sip of coffee. Just a brief, full body fit. ”Coffee is gross. Ylech.”
Candy could smell something that she knew was good though. She smiled to Leigh, ”Want some pancakes?” She slung her bunny back over her shoulder, and grabbed both toaster and June's coffee. Wandering on over to the bar, she set the coffee on the counter. The little girl went down the bar briefly, and offered up the completed toaster back to Remy. Not quite meeting the blonde woman's eyes, Candy's voice went softer, ”Thank you, Ma'am.”
She wanted to explain more about how much she had learned over the last two weeks from puzzling Remy's old toaster back together, but none of that got translated from thought. There was more an awkward moment of silence, Candy staring down at her own feet. Failing to find the right words for borrowing the toaster, she worked up courage enough to smile up at Remy, ”Thank you!” Candy left the toaster on the counter and scampered back to get her share of pancakes.

The smell of the pancakes filled the room and it looked like Lily and June had found their calling here. She just hoped they didn't get too complacent with everything going on outside the walls. She was well prepared to devour what was set before them, but she was still waiting for Luca and Simon and there was someone else she hadn't seen for a few days..Dan.
"Save a few for me. I'm going to go grab Dan."
He kept to himself mostly and she could understand why. People didn't really understand people like her and Dan and their motives to find a means to an end. She didn't have any intentions of finding a cure but she wanted to find out a cause..at some point. That's exactly what Dan wanted to do and she knew two minds together could possibly make that happen. She pushed the bar stool back, scraping against the worn, wood floor and she headed back out and up the stairs towards his room, which was only a few doors past her room with Luca. Down the hall she saw Luca and Simon talking. Simon turned and looked at her as if she were going to approach, but she didn't.
Instead, she stopped at Dan's door and knocked softly.
"Dan? You in here?" She gently started to open the door, which was unlocked. When the splash of sunlight hit the room, she could see the tables laid out and him contemplating his next moves. Shutting the door behind her as not to interrupt too much, but also so Simon and Luca couldn't hear her conversation with Dan.
"Hey, uh..I hope I'm not interrupting. There's food downstairs and I haven't seen you for a couple of days. I figured you may be hungry."
Dan was deep in thought, going over page and page of the material he had written years. By now he had I memorized, but yet he still read it, every line, every word. He was stuck, he hated being stuck. He didn't know where to go from here, without a proper lab, or proper tools he couldn't do anything but think, and he had thought enough.
The knock to the door startled him and he jumped, the boo shaking as he did. He quickly composed himself and turned, patting down his legs. "Yes, I am, come in," he said through the door. When Remy entered he smiled at her. He knew she would stop by today, they were due for one of their daily chats. Before they would get busy with any tasks they had laid out for them. Though they had missed the last few or so, busy schedules.
"You weren't interupting at all, hard to interupt when nothing I happening," Dan said nodding. "I'm not hungry, I just ate. Thankyou though." That was a lie, he hadn't eaten since yesterday morning. He didn't need to, didn't like to eat when he was stuck. "Thank you for the offer."
Dan closed the notes. "I'm stuck, I can't think on what to do next." He paused, looking down. "I want a live test subject, a walker I can run tests on, while it's alive. But I don't know how to come by one."

Remy wanted some of those pancakes downstairs. She honestly had no idea when the last time was she had them and she was pretty sure the last time she had a hot meal was in Colorado. She knew, at the farm in the bayou there would be hot food, likely cooked on a spit over a campfire compared to pre-packaged processed canned food.
"I get why you're not so social." She shut the door quietly behind her as she moved to the table where he had some things set up. She sat down in the chair and toyed with a couple of beakers that he took from the university. She wasn't sure why, but she realized when she was around Dan she was a lot softer compared to her harder demeanor around Luca. He saw moments of vulnerability with her, but she knew she needed to be a lot stronger around him because of the kind of guy he was. Dan wasn't like that. He was the intellectual and she didn't have to prove how tough she could be with him. They both shared a terrible moment together and it was okay to open up.
"But bringing a live walker here will never fly. The only one that may understand is Andrei."
She looked over at him as he continued to sit with the book in hand, gauging what she could say next. If they were going to stay, a lab could not be here. Even if they did sneak in and out with 'samples' it was bound to be discovered sooner or later and lying about it later would only set them back.
"If this is going to happen, it has to be away from here and I'm afraid you can't leave as long as that Acer guy is still alive. I'm pretty sure he hasn't backed off since you saved Anthony."
She got up and went over to the side of the bed where he sat, sitting next to him as she looked down at his book. Her voice was soft as she spoke, quiet so no one would hear them through the door.
Her question must have struck a cord since he quickly grew nervous and uncomfortable. Not exactly the reaction June intended to gather. She decided to let that conversation drop there. If he didn't want to talk about it, he didn't want to talk about it. June could understand probably better than anyone. There were things that haunted June she didn't even feel comfortable sharing with Lily or Dallas, and they knew her better than anyone else here. She soon came back down to Earth when he asked his question.
“I uh... No. I mainly just been handing out food.”
June's thoughts went back to Simon, and then quickly forced themselves away from Simon. She didn't like how vulnerable she felt around men. If one of them ever got the idea to... well... June didn't know what she'd do. It was unfair to demonize them all, but the state of the world had made her cautious on that aspect. A lot more cautious than she had been before. And seeing that it was one of the things Acer and his men were known for didn't help her anxiety at all.
“Might grab a broom and sweep up the broken glass in the lobby. Getting tired of looking at it. So, watchtower, huh? Where you learn how to build?”
"Oh why am I not so social," Dan adked with a grin, "I'm social, I speak to you. I also talked to Cade just yesterday, or was it the day before." He shook his head. "You're right. I'd rather hide in here. Though it is nicer to e around people who can actually hold a conversation, like that doctor, Andrei. I was to tired of thugs and Neanderthals being my only social interaction."
He moved away from the tables, looking at Remy. "You see you can make the Walker so they aren't dangerous anymore. Once the arms, and lower jaw is removed they can't attack you. They can't really make noise either, nothing to snap. They are harmless without the ability to attack you. Removing those features and they are just a body, nothing to harm you with."
He looked down, "but you are right. They wouldt allow it. I doubt Collette would even allow all of this. I doubt she would be happy if she look in the cooler. None of these people would. I can't leave, I know that. Acer has a target on me, but he's not going anywhere. He won't just back down, he wants me dead, he'll die trying to get to me. I am getting stir crazy in here, this hotel. I don't like being confined for to long. You understand, it's why you always ran wasn't it?"

Remy chuckled as he spoke about talking to her and Cade. "That's not being social Dan. Being social would be coming back downstairs with me and eating pancakes. Letting people see you. Not hiding away in your room. People get suspicious you know?"
She leaned back on the bed, spreading her hands back behind her as she crossed one foot over the other, looking out the thin stream of light that poked through the window. She looked towards the cooler, wondering what it was he kept in there, although she already had a good idea. Probably a head, body parts or other walker bits that they needed to study.
"I know about rendering them helpless. I was going to experiment with one back in California. I had her tied up to a tree. I was going to cut off her arms, legs and jaw and see what happens when the snow comes. I wanted to see if they go dormant or if they actually die. I wanted to see how they react in the winter. But before I could, someone killed her while she was tied to the tree. Those people...they saw the walkers as people still. They said I was morbid and like Dr. Frankenstein for what I wanted to do. They didn't get what needed to happen to get to the bottom of all this."
She shook her head and looked back to him as he spoke about being holed up in his room, unable to wander or to go on any sorts of of supply runs. What surprised her more was when he asked if that's the reason why she ran also. It wasn't. It wasn't even close to understanding why she ran away. She furrowed her brow and was irritated at first that he would ask that, but then she realized it was more of a reason then he may understand. She just answered simply, at first. "No, that ain't the reason."
Why would she confess anything to him? She wasn't even sure if she should explain herself even more and when she sat back up, she lifted her arms and wrapped them around her body as if she was attempting to stave off some cold breeze that didn't even exist. She stood up and started for the door again, thinking about those pancakes getting cold without her.
"Things get complicated, Dan. Complications I don't want to deal with. It's easier when you're alone. After a while, that's all you are...alone."
James took another sip from the cup of coffee he held and listened intently to what June said, apparently she hadn`t got any job; she was just passing time by doing spontaneous things for people. It was good he thought, at least she kept herself occupied. When she mentioned the broken glass in the lobby, he knew exactly what he meant. It had irritated him too, as it had been lying about for over two weeks now without anyone cleaning up. He could of course have done it himself, but he was busy building things, securing the area. She asked about the watchtower and he was glad she picked up on it, she wanted to know how he had learned to build, to which he answered. “I studied to become a carpenter in Baton Rouge, I moved here once I graduated, seeing there was plenty of work to be had after the recent hurricane disaster.”
He took a bit of the bread and cheese and looked elsewhere for a moment, before he turned his attention back at her. “I`m glad to hear you`re picking up those piece of glasses, it`s been there a long time, surprised none has stamped on it yet.” He chuckled quietly, thinking about it. “Well, I`m certain it won`t be long now before we get new jobs to do, we just got to wait for the instructions. Colette seemed to be in a hurry though.” James stated, mentioning what he had figured earlier.
“Come sit down, take a seat, you don`t need to stand.” He suggested and patted his hand at the bed, offering her to sit down beside him. With his gaze upon her, he noticed how pretty she was and how kind she behaved. Here she was speaking to him, when instead she could have been downstairs talking to the others. It was nice, it wasn`t often he had the company to converse with others, nor had he really wanted to as of late, until now.
Simon looked back as he saw some movement over his shoulder behind them. Being a cop, your peripheral vision had to be impeccable when it came to keeping yourself safe and he was sure Luca had seen it too. When he turned his head back, he saw the blonde, Remy, Luca's friend, going to a door of another room. He wasn't sure whose room that was, but she had seen him with the dark haired fellow that he only knew by the name of James. Lily and June had talked about James in front of him. They said names of several people who he did not know, but was willing to find out who they were.
First rule of survival was to know your environment. Second rule was to know who was in it.
"Hey, that's that friend of yours. Do you know that boyfriend of hers? That guy named James? I heard some grumbling about that guy. Something about him being more trouble then he's worth."
He stayed in the hotel landing for a few minutes talking to Luca before smelling the food cooking down below. He figured that would be a good place for them to start the day. He could also figure out the who's who of Hotel Monteleone.
"If that's the case, is she going to be a problem?"
Luca shook his head and smiled at Simon's comment about "dinner and a show." The man hadn't changed a bit, from what Luca could see. He decided to met Simon's gruffness with a joke. "Shit man, aren't they both lesbians?" he was laughing at the question--he barely knew either of the two women, and thought it was funny that Simon had already taken interest. "And, by the way, I'm pretty sure lesbian means the're not into you," Luca smiled at his partner before turning to the smell of coffee and pancakes. "Yeah, we should go check it out. I don't know the new people--not really, and you don't know hardly anyone. You should get to know some--Remy, Anthony, Andrei saved your life. And Dan and Remy brought you back here." Luca's smile had faded as he and his friend made their way to get some breakfast.
When Simon asked about going after the woman that shot him, a shiver went down Luca's spine. He thought Simon would have let it go now that he had a safe place. "Hey, I mean, yeah...yeah, we'll do it. But don't you think we have enough, uh, resources here? Do we need to rob her?" Luca had slowed his pace, contemplating the situation Simon had presented to him. They'd likely have jobs here soon, and going out and killing people wasn't likely to be on the list. What shocked Luca even more was Simon's bluntness regarding Remy "being a problem."
Luca stopped and crossed his arms over his chest as he rested against the wall. "She's not a problem. She's just fine, okay? Now, James, that guy from, ah, Acer's...he may be. And if we think he is, we'll do something. I know the guy, Clayton, doesn't like him, and most don't care about him. If we need to, we'll take care of him. But Remy is fine."
"Nice to meet you, too," Leigh forced out. June seemed nice--many of them seemed nice. That didn't mean Leigh trusted them, though. Acer had been nice at first. But so far nobody had died--or nobody had killed anybody. Kim had killed someone--as a walker. Leigh remained quiet throughout the conversation, listening, but saying nothing, until June left to go back upstairs.
Leigh was about to speak when she heard Clayton stand from his chair and raise his voice.
"A run is necessary either way, then..." Clayton scowled at nothing in particular, reviewing his options. It didn't matter at that exact moment, in truth. It didn't. When Andrei was healthy, he could go out, accompanied by Dallas, and find whatever he could. That was their best bet, in truth. Beggars could not be choosers, so they would have to go with whatever they found out there, though it was imperative they found something. "When you are sufficiently recovered, we will discuss this further. We'll need you to go, as you said, so it remains a nonissue for now," Clayton nodded to Andrei and rose from his seat, eying everyone in the room who'd congregated for pancakes.
"May I have everyone's attention?" Clayton raised his voice, and the question sounded more like a statement. He waited a moment before continuing. "I have allocated positions to each of you, pursuant to your talents, knowledge, and skill set. You can find the list of positions and their comporting responsibilities here," Clayton raised the piece of paper in his hand to make sure everyone could see it and then, with applied tape, stuck it to one of the pillars supporting the overhang of the bar.
Clayton was about to take a seat and resume discussion with Andrei and Anthony, but instead, seizing the moment, he cleared his throat and began speaking. "Those of you who are well enough acquainted with the composition and organization of this group know that I am not the leader. I do not own this bar. I am not Colette. Just now, even, senior members of this group--Colette and Arcade--have marched to Acer's to confront the man. I am not Colette, and I am not Arcade. I will never act so brashly--though perhaps what is brashness to me is bravery to you." Clayton paused a moment, surveying the group before him, debating how to bring up the more dire subject.
"Acer is a dangerous man. He is a man without a code. He is a man without any moral or value system. He controls twenty to thirty men. And he is our neighbor...and we are not safe. Perhaps you are not alarmed--perhaps you recognize that we have not been safe for some time. For years, in fact. Such is true, though I ought to remind you that the walking corpses cannot so much as open a closed door, let alone fire a gun and control twenty subordinates." Clayton gritted his teeth and looked at the ground, choosing his next words carefully. "I'm told many of you encountered a man who led a group...a man who tried to hurt or kill you. I also know that man had a code. Acer Morrell has no code. His men rape, they murder, and they defile. They act with no code. Acer is not the man with whom you had your previous altercations--this..." Clayton paused, trying to remember the man's name. "...Adolphus. Opposition is not opposition. As with anything, there are degrees. Acer does not see himself as saving the world, he sees himself as getting what he wants. And he does not want competition. What I ask of each of you is simple: do the assignment to which you are assigned. Do it well, do it dutifully, and we will outmatch Acer. If there's one thing his men lack, it is discipline, and we can outmatch them in that. It will not be an easy fight, but if we all...do as we ought, we will outlast. We will endure."
The DT shakes began again as Nolan stayed leaned against the door, "Dammit," he huffed out before throwing up pure stomach bile which meant he had absolutely nothing left in him to puke.
He slammed both fists against the doors again, "I'm thirsty," he groaned kicking the door and punching it. His whole body seized up and he hit his knees starting to dry heave. It was by far worse than puking, Nolan needed beer or liquor or both? A quick memory of his son laying across him lifeless and covered in blood danced in his memories.
He began to cry, he wanted a drink to make him feel better and drown that painful memory. Nolan dry heaved several times before passing out again face down in stomach bile.

Sam arrived almost out of nowhere, which surprised Andrei. He didn't see her much because of her condition, and the fact that she came asking if she's allowed to eat something was a very pleasant surprise. Not long after her came Holly with a not so pleasant surprise. Simon wanted to go on a supply run. Andrei wasn't surprised. Any friend of Luca's was probably going to be just as stubborn. He made a subtle gesture with his index to Holly, meaning that he will get to her problem in a minute, once he finished with Sam.
"Sure, it's great to see you up and moving about." he began "The fact that you're hungry is a good sign. Go easy on the coffee, though. Eat something, but not too much. Eat slowly and chew for a bit longer. It'll make your body get its fill with less. If you feel nauseous, lie on your side, with the leg that isn't resting on the bed bent to 90 degrees and a hand under your head. If, for example, you lay on your left side, you will bend your right knee." he exemplified the last part and showed her whilst sitting down, and further explained the reason "If you do happen to vomit, which I sincerely hope you don't, this position will prevent you from breathing it in. Understood? Good. I'll be up to check on you when I can." once she was on her way, Andrei turned to Holly, to see what the problem with Simon was.
"So, he wants to go on a supply run? That's a bit cocky. But we'll see if he's up for it. If the wound closed and lets him move around, then he can go. If not, he still needs some rest." he summarized, grinning at Holly before hearing Clayton mumble something and then address Andrei. The man decided that it would be best if Andrei made the runs for the sterilizing supplies. He agreed. No point in some other people risking their necks to get him some new toys and besides, Andrei was certain he could handle himself in almost any situation.
Almost out of nowhere, Clayton rose and held a speech after posting the job lists. The man had a way with words, but Andrei wasn't sure how many would buy into the moral code thing. Still, Clayton did make a good point: Acer was amoral and chaotic. Two very dangerous traits when put together. And Colette and Cade just marched to the guy's front door? Why? He'd have to remember to ask later. 'We will endure.' were Clayton's finishing words. Fitting.
"Well said." Andrei told the man as he sat back down. "Though I'm not sure many of them understand the concept of a moral code." he looked around and indeed doubted people's understanding. Andrei only knew what it meant because he had it instilled in him from a young age. His martial arts master was very insistent on discipline, honor and morality. A follower of the Bushido, something he too aspired to be, in his childhood and teenage years. Andrei found himself wondering what the man would think of him now, after everything.
As if out of nowhere, a series of loud bangs were heard on the door, and in the silence that followed, the sounds of someone vomiting and heaving could be distinguished.
"Check who it is!" he bellowed to no one and everyone, rising quickly from the seat next to Clayton.

With everyone wrapped up in their own thing, and Candy too scared to ask Lilly directly, she didn't bother asking anyone for pancakes. Instead she weaved around those gathered around the bar, and quietly took her share of pancakes plus a couple for Leigh too. She avoided meeting most anyone's gaze while getting the pancakes. Candy did not stick around the bar longer than she had to get the pancakes, slipping back over to Leigh. She smiled, separating the pancakes into two stacks. ”I got some for you too if you want them.”
Candy loved most about the past two weeks was a steady diet of normal actual food. Digging in, Clayton began his speech, and she even turned to listen while she ate. Little Candy was rather impressed with the level of organization demonstrated, especially the list of jobs. She would have to check out what it said once she was finished with breakfast.
A fanatic for lists and detailed organization in her own right, Candy's attention was held longer than most other ten year olds would have been. Once Clay got to the parts of speech concerning people and events she knew nothing about, her age began to show its colors. She made out something about, people in the bar good, man named Acer bad. A gross oversimplification of what Clayton said, and Candy still had her doubts about Arcade. Being thrown to the wolves by insiders who didn't want her there was a more concrete worry to her than the threat of an outside bogeyman.
She noted the knocking, but answering the door was hardly her job. Candy finished up her pancakes, ”These are pretty good.”
