Walkers they called them. They came out of nowhere. From the hospital, the morgue, car accidents. People rising up and tearing out the organs of others. Several news stations reported on the attack worldwide. Local law enforcement fighting the 'walkers' who took the bullets and kept coming in large numbers. Eating the officers in question and continuing on unrelenting. They seemed unstoppable. Multiplying by the hour.
Tori and her friends were huddled up on the couch in front of the TV. Tori sitting on the end with Shinta to her right. Shinta's younger sister, June, gripping his arm tightly while eyes were glued to the television screen. Lily and Nex next to them. At the opposite end of the couch was Mary who had her hands clamped together and eyes closed. Silently praying. Their eyes stayed on the TV until eventually the screen went blank and there was nothing but static. Tori tried channel surfing only to find that every channel was no longer airing content, and decided to shut the TV off. The six staring off in silence for a moment before Tori stood up.
“W-What do we do?” asked June.
“We stay here,” answered Tori. “The army and the National Guard should be sent in soon. In the meantime we have everything we need here, and enough food to last. Especially after you guys grabbed everything from your places.”
“Our folks are still out there!” exclaimed Lily, standing up, “we should be out there looking for them!”
“Did you not see those things? They're ripping people apart it's far too dangerous to go looking for them.”
“We have guns!”
“So did the police. And look what it got them.”
“You really think the army and National Guard will fare much better?” Nex inquired.
“They're better trained,” interjected Shinta, “and they have far more toys than guns, tasers, and nightsticks.”
“L-Lily's right,” Mary spoke up, “we should go looking for them. They may need our help.”
“Holy shit, Lily and Mary agreed on something. It really is the end of the world.”
“I get that you guys are worried about them. We all are. But they wouldn't want us to risk our lives for them. If they're still alive they'll contact us.”
“Tori's right,” Shinta said, getting up to stand next to Tori, “it's far too dangerous to go out there right now.”
Lily looked away from Tori and Shinta and turned around.
“I'm going to take a piss.”
With that, Lily went into the hallway and entered the bathroom.
“What am I going to do with that girl?”
“We could always gag her and tie her to the bed.”
“Eeh, she'd like that.”
“Not if we make her listen to Country music during.”
“I don't want to torture her.”
“So, what do we do? Just sit here and hope one of our parents drive up?”
“We should probably secure the house first. Board up the windows and barricade the doors. Just to be on the safe side.”
“Barricade it with what?”
“I guess we don't need the television anymore.”
“Not big enough. The bookcase may work. Shinta, Nex, help me get all this crap out of the way.”
There was a treadmill, a table, fan, and barrels on either side of the shelf blocking the way. The trio moved those and then proceeded to clear out the bookcase so stuff didn't go falling out of while they moved it. June and Mary finally stood up after a while and went over to them.
“What can we do?”
“Go downstairs and barricade the basement door. Then gather all the wood and bring it up here so we can board the windows. There are plenty of tools down there if you need to make more. Don't forget to board up the basement windows before you come up.”
“Okay. Come on, Mary.”
June and Mary went downstairs just as Lily came out of the bathroom.
“Lily, since you like guns so much, how about you crack open the gun safe and gather the goods? We may need them in case we come under fire.”
“What happened to guns not being any help?” Lily asked, crossing her arms.
Tori sighed.
“There's a difference between defending ourselves at home, and running around in the open. Now are you going to help or not?”
“Fine.”
Lily went into the kitchen and looked at the messy board where a bunch of keys hanged next to each other.
“Um... Which key goes to the gun safe?”
“Not sure,” answered Tori while she, Shinta, and Nex were carrying the bookshelf.
“You don't know where the key to your own gun safe is?”
“It's not my gun safe, it's my parents' gun safe!”
Tori let out a breath of air when the three put the shelf down in front of the door.
“Fuck sake!” Lily grabbed all the keys and began to try them each one by one. “How many keys can one family have?!”
“That should keep dem rotting bastards from breaking in.”
“We're not out of the blue yet. Still need to board up the windows. Shinta, can you go check and see how June and Mary are doing?”
“Sure thing.”
Shinta headed through the kitchen and out into the garage to reach the steps leading into the basement.
“Look at you with the commands and organization. You're a regular Commander Shepard.”
“What does that make you? Garrus?”
“If it means we get to fuck, sure!”
“Get out of here!”
Tori teasingly pushed Nex away and the two parted. Tori went over to the window and looked through the blinders to see...
The Walking Dead in the street outside.
It wasn't a large group. Just a couple of them wandering about. Sniffing the air and dragging their feet as they looked at their surroundings absentmindedly. Tori stared at them in awe for a second. She had watched them on TV all day, but it was another thing entirely to see them in the flesh. Tori closed the blinders and turned around.
“Lily! We need those weapons now!”
