-Respect: Having lived overseas for most of her childhood, she learned to respect others for who they are; living in Detroit has strengthened this trait
-Self control: Intense self-control borne of years of martial arts training both in the Philippines and in the 'States has given her a preternatural sense of self-control, which when combined with most of her apparel choices gave her the sobriquet of "the Lady in Black", a moniker she has never chose to shake off, even now
List 3 or more bad personality traits:
-Ice-cold mentality: The flip side of having a very calm demeanor and manner is that some people over the years have interpreted it wrongly as being cold-hearted, something she isn't but has never really tried to correct
-Skeptical: Surviving on an island in-between two very urban areas is a recipe for someone to develop a bad skeptical streak in them
-Stubborn: The flip side of being a decisive person is that there have been times where, after she's made a decision, she's been unwilling to go back and change at times, sometimes to the detriment of others
List 3 strengths:
-Trustworthy
-Boldness
-Endurance
-Thriftiness
List 3 flaws:
-Cynical
-Reckless risk-taker
-Snarkish
Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
-There's an old saying...."With wealth comes responsibility." This fits Sarah Roland almost perfectly. Born in the Philippines to American expats who worked for General Motors' South Asian headquarters, she was given the best of everything but with the unspoken idea that one day she'd need to prove herself. Growing up, she was an astute student, graduating from one of the best expatriate schools in the Philippines and learning the art of Filipino martial arts, eventually becoming a very skilled student under the tutelage of Eskrima legend Dan Inosanto. Returning to the U.S. after graduating from high school, she attended Wayne State University and after graduating from there, soon went to work at the Detroit Yacht & Boat Club (a/k/a the Detroit Yacht Club or simply the DYC), where she eventually became the Club's Director of Dockside Operations (i.e. anyone who wanted to use the Club's docks had to go through her first), a position she held through Outbreak Day...
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
-To explain what happened that day, a little background on Belle Isle Island and how it fits in to everything. In the first weeks of what became the undead apocalypse, Detroit was one of the first cities to report unusual deaths and other bizarre events; as a result, the state of Michigan - on the advice of the CDC and the Public Health Service - designed Belle Isle Island as a medical staging area, locating units of the Michigan State Medical Detachment, Michigan Army National Guard and Michigan Volunteer Defense Force to the island in an effort to study and possibly stem the tide of the outbreak..unfortunately, they weren't successful and by the time Outbreak Day (or Zero Day as she calls it) came, the Guard and other military personnel save a few brave VDF souls had decided to abandon the island and barricade the MacArthur Bridge to prevent people leaving - or walkers/looters from getting onto the island.
Anyway, that said, on Outbreak Day, Sarah - who by now was living pretty much day-to-day at the DYC along with others from the club, had traveled across the Detroit River back into Detroit to grab more clothes from her residence along East Jefferson Avenue and to make one last attempt to find her parents, who lived nearby. After leaving her house for the last time, she tried to find her parents but found that the roads were swamped with looters and walkers from downtown and other nearby locations....however, when she found her parents, she found to her horror that both of them were dead from gunshot wounds - more precisely, her father from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, her mother from a gunshot wound delivered by her father after having been bitten by a walker that'd broken into their home. After saying a few short Catholic prayers for them, Sarah headed back outside and after dodging more walkers and looters, managed to get back across the still-frozen Detroit River and back to the relative safety of Belle Isle Island...
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
-After almost two months of surviving inside the buildings of the Detroit Yacht Club, those who had stayed behind on the island (her, along with eight other DYC members, along with 15 or so individuals from the Michigan Volunteer Defense Force who'd volunteered to stay-behind when the military abandoned/barricaded the island's only land connection, decided to join forces. Their first goal: clear the island once and for all of anything remotely threatening....this they did over the course of the first summer on the island, clearing it from one end to the other end, finishing by rebuilding the barricades so that they could use the MacArthur Bridge over the winter rather than risk crossing the Detroit River by boat and possibly getting caught in the river's notorious iceflows (yes, the Detroit River freezes in the winter, almost to the point of freezing over solid...with the lack of Great Lakes shipping in the post-apocalyptic world, transit off the island is only possible over the MacArthur Bridge in winter-time.)
Over time - and through lots of blood, sweat and hard work - the survivors eventually turned Belle Isle Island - once a Michigan State Park and Detroit landmark - into an urban stronghold, an oasis of sorts in the Great Lakes region, with the Yacht Club building being turned into a fortress. Through all that time, Sarah Roland has kept her mind about her, helping protect the island and its' inhabitants, making runs by vehicle and boat into both Detroit and Windsor for both supplies and to see if there are any survivors out there....a tedious, painstaking and sometimes tragic endeavour, but one befitting a person of her former position in life.
