Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Feng, born MeiFeng Xun, was a genderqueer male, born biologically female. He kept his transgender predisposition from his parents because they were very rigid with high expectations and the relationship with them would not have allowed for him to come out to them. This made him turn to friends as his support network. He had many friends in many circles, but his closest inner circle was his family. His closest high school friend, Lyra, was like a sister to him and helped him to realize he was not “just a tomboy.”
While his parents expected him to follow in their footsteps and study medicine at Columbia, Feng decided to major in Environmental Studies, with a focus in plant biology. He had always had an affinity for plants, trees in particular. While studying at this program, he met Michael Parsons or Mattie, as he would come to affectionately call him, who became a close friend and unspoken crush.
Trained in the martial art of Seven Star Praying Mantis kung-fu from the age of 5, Feng won various national tournaments. His closest mentor and parent-figure was his shi-fu, LongFei Yang. When he went to college, he attended classes less often, but kept up his training independently.
Feng enjoyed hiking, camping and rock-climbing and would regularly go on trips with friends or for training. Music was something introduced to him at almost as early as kung-fu. He began piano at the age of 7 and continued only through middle school. Nonetheless, singing was always a personal outlet for him in addition to physical activity.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
The day of the outbreak fell over the 3-day research trip the members of our Environmental Science program took to the High Mountain Park Preserve. The students attending brought packs and camping gear in order to stay on the preserve and observe the rare plantlife on-site. Most of the students were rather unaware of what was going on in most of the rest of the country. They were not around many people and phone reception was spotty at best.
On the second day of the trip, a student managed to get a good signal and saw news reports of riots breaking out in NYC. The professors had everyone pack up shop and hop back on the buses to try and get as many people back to their homes as possible. When the shuttle got within 5 miles of the city, everyone decided it was going to be impossible to get into the city by car with all traffic at a complete standstill. Students broke off into groups to try and find shelter, ways home, or local friends and family.
Mattie, Lyra and Feng stuck together and ducked into a storefront to buy some emergency supplies for their packs. While in the store, the three saw a news report that showed the Columbia University Medical Center surrounded by SWAT teams and military personnel with riot gear and automatic weapons. It looked like they were attacking the hospital. Then, a bunch of people burst through the doors of the building. Some were scrambling to get out, others were grabbing at those scrambling. Still others, shambled slowly, but determinedly out toward the heavily armed men. The men told the people to stand down or they would shoot. Not a single person seemed to hear the orders as they listlessly dragged onward. The men opened fire. They sprayed the entire crowd with bullets, but there seemed to be little effect aside from some stumbling. They pressed forward and the officers were forced back. as they continued to pour ammunition into the swarm of people, some finally began to fall and stay down amidst screams and rioting. The camera panned across the people and zoomed in on one side of the crowd. Feng recognized his father’s face and in his hands was an arm covered with the sleeve of his mother’s favorite plum-blossom patterned silk blouse.
Mattie grabbed Feng’s arm as his legs nearly gave out from under him and Lyra finished getting their necessary supplies. She gave the two a quick look and demanded that they get out of there. *Now.* They dragged Feng, first shocked and catatonic, then bereaved and screaming to the nearest car they could open the door of. Lyra looked up the information for hot-wiring a car and got the three of them on the move while Mattie held a flailing Feng in the back seat. They headed back out the way they came to stay out in the woods, away from the madness that had overtaken their hometown, hopefully until this insanity blew over.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
After the Outbreak, Feng’s friends take him to Ramapo Mountain State Forest. They stay there for about a week before they decide to try and go back for Lyra’s family. After several unsuccessful attempts, and seeing the carnage that was once NYC, the three decide to go west and find a natural reserve to lay low for a while and come up with a plan for next steps.
The trio drives out to Bald Eagle State Forest and settle in there for about two months, with the occasional supply run out to neighboring cities. After the second month, during one of these raids, the three are overtaken by a herd of Walkers. Feng is the only one to make it out alive with just his walking stick for a weapon. He takes the car back to their base camp and he dispassionately wastes away for 3 days before deciding to carry on himself.
He gets his things together and begins using his map and compass to get him to the Allegheny Forest. This area contains the starting place Ohio River. He decides, due to his awful sense of direction, he should stick to the riverbanks in order to press on without getting hopelessly lost. He acquires a mountain bike and bike panniers along the way to help with off-road travel and he ditches the car. Over the course of 6 months of traveling along the Ohio RIver, he quietly falls in and out with people as is convenient and useful for him, but he is always extremely careful, withdrawn and difficult to approach.
