Cua is a Hmong-American woman in her early twenties. She is 5'4" and ropey with muscle, the hard-earned proof of her continuing survival. Formerly very slim, she's gained weight since the outbreak as she's added muscle to her body. Her eyes are black and slightly puffy, in part genetic and part restless nights. She has long black hair that she hasn't bothered to trim or cut since the outbreak. She wears it up in a ponytail or low in a strict bun. The scars of untreated childhood illnesses dot her skin, along with the freshly healed cuts and welts picked up in the brave new world.
Through trial and error, Cua has thinned her apparel down to a select few items. She raids campsites and outdoor supply stores for nylon cargo pants and breathable, quick drying fabric. She always wears boots or pants that cover her ankle holster, concealing her Pup Knife in case of emergency.

Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Cua's parents, Laotian refugees from the Vietnam War, resettled in the US in the late 70s. Cua was born in California and lived with her parents in their East LA apartment until her graduation from UCLA. Due to her academic achievements, Cua was able to dissuade her parents from arranging a marriage match for her and convinced them to let her move out on her own after being hired at a local IT consulting firm. She still lived near her family within the LA city limits, but the move out provided her with a significant amount of personal freedom. She has a talent for data architecture, but no particular passion for it, as her Comp Sci degree was more the result of family pressure than personal choice.
When Cua was fourteen, her younger sister became very ill. Her parents took their youngest daughter to a Hmong shaman, who treated the child and attempted to recall her ailing spirit. When the girl worsened and traditional medicine didn't appear to help, they took her to a Western doctor. She was diagnosed with late stage acute lymphocytic leukemia. Cua's sister died four months later. Stricken with grief, the family broke apart, blame and resentment creating distance between everyone. Over time, the family abandoned the traditional faith and converted to Christianity. Cua's faith is a blend of these two religions, mixing Hmong traditions with Judeo-Christian doctrine.
Her brother, four years her senior, married early and lives with his wife in the same building as their parents.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
Cua was at work, one of the few who hadn't called out sick that day, when a radio announcement came on declaring a state of emergency. The pernicious flu that was felling her coworkers had reached epidemic levels. She was to go home and stay inside.
As Cua was leaving her building, her older brother called. He was grabbing things from the supermarket, water and candles mostly, and she needed to go grab them some propane and come over to their parent's apartment building. Irritated but unsurprised, Cua obeyed, swinging by her own low-rent mouse hole just long enough to change and pack an overnight bag.
On the way over, traffic was at a standstill. She could hear gunshots from what seemed to be all directions. She pressed foreword, jumping sidewalks where necessary and eventually arrived at her parents' building.
Together, Cua, her brother, her sister-in-law, and her parents huddled in the two bedroom apartment, afraid to open the door. They were armed only with her brother's hunting rifle. After a week, listening to the riots and gunfire outside, they decided Los Angeles was too dangerous and that they would make a break for her cousins' in Minnesota.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
The road to Minnesota was anarchy. As they'd drawn closer to Vegas, the roads became completely impassable. The city was in flames. Forced to abandon their cars, the family fled on foot, still doggedly heading North East.
Her parents' familiarity with nomadic life, and her father's military experience fighting the Pathet Lao and North Vietnamese, saved them. They stole where they could, avoiding others and keeping to themselves. The men taught Cua and her sister-in-law how to shoot, while her mother taught them how to lay snares for animals.
It took four and a half months to walk to Minnesota. Cua stole survivalist books from stores, tearing out pages she'd read and burning them in the cooking fire.
By the time they reached her cousins' town, just outside Huntersville Forest, it had been abandoned. Without any idea where her cousins might have gone or if they had lived through the escape, the family settled in. There didn't seem anything else to do.
They lived this way, mostly secluded and alone, for nearly a year. They dug massive pits, like a moat, around the house and put in an inexpertly made brick wall. Even so, it lasted. Until a raiding party came through. Her brother died helping the family escape.
Forced again from their home, the grieving family took off, wandering aimlessly Eastward, occasionally cutting South. Maybe they'd go to Philadelphia, they said. Her mother had distant relatives who had settled there.
One night, the sound of the trip alarm woke them. A hoard had found them. There were hundreds, everywhere. They seemed to come from all directions.
Her sister-in-law died first, screaming as they ripped her body with their teeth. Her mother was next, stumbling as she ran, falling under them, suddenly silent.
Cua and her father made it to a river. The dead were close on their heels. Cua took off her pack, threw it in, and jumped in after. Her father readied to jump after and lurched forward, and then fell back. Cua could see that a demon that had hold of his pack, it's rotting flesh and gaping mouth visible even as she struggled to keep her head above the water. She could see the terror in her father's eyes. The current caught her, and she was swept away.
Alone, Cua existed without aim. She wandered without purpose, trance-like, waiting for death or the Devil, whichever came for her first.
