Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
- Josie never knew her biological parents, she grew up week to week with different people in different houses. Rarely spending more than a month at a time in a single home. She knew very little of who she was, and where she came from. As a child this impacted her in a huge way, made her feel unwanted and lonely.
Eventually through sheer luck she found parents that wanted to make her a permanent part of their family. Even though Josie was not biologically a Ramos that never seemed to matter. Even her adopted sister, who had been apprehensive at first of having a stranger for a sibling, warmed up to her. They grew close over the years, and Josie had never longed to seek out her true origins since.
Her new family consisted of some rather colorful characters. Her father Jeffrey was the type to spend more time outdoors than in. Always taking the girls camping, fishing, and hunting when they were younger. Josie in particular learned her skill for trap-making through him. Though they did not continue these camping trips into adulthood. Her mother worked as a CNA, her hours often long and strenuous.
Her most shining achievement outside of finding a family would have to be her school life. Acing every class, getting a 4.0 GPA and graduating with high honors. She had decided to go on to college but hadn't exactly thought about what for. Despite her drive to learn she had never settled on any specific field of study or work for her future, spending her time stuck going between meaningless classes and the Daycare where she worked. As well as she was still clinging on to the last bit of her childhood, afraid to face an uncertain future where she would be out on her own.
It all seemed so scary, but she had yet to face true terror yet.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
- Outbreak Day, the day that everything changed and Josie found the foundation of her life crumbling beneath her very feet. She remembers it like a fever dream. A single event that ripped everything away. She had been visiting the family home for a Bar-B-Que, friends and family alike were invited and had invaded the home like a swarm. She remembers feeling ill from the crowd, never having been one to enjoy being surrounded by so many people. She had joined her nephew in the sitting room, where he was watching a strangely entertaining cartoon.
She hadn't taken notice of the screaming at first. Not until a handful of minutes later when her sister and a handful of guests came inside. Her mother frantically trying to dial 911 but getting no answer. A family friend, Diane, had been bitten by some crazed man. Her entire shoulder dripping with blood.
Nobody knew what to do so Josies father offered to drive Diane to the hospital. Josie didn't know at the time but that was the last time that she would ever see her father alive. After they left the party dissolved, most of the guests too spooked to stick around. And it didn't take long for things to turn from bad to worse.
From there its a blur, Josie remembers some things better than others. She remembers watching the news, hearing the sirens, and watching her mother stumble pale faced from the kitchen and announcing that the car had crashed on the way to the hospital. Remembers packing bags, gathering food, her mind spinning as she and her sister try to board up doors and windows as best as they could with what little they had to do so.
But nothing could have prepared them from the onslaught of craziness that came soon after. The world seemed to have turned upside down. News reports of people killing each other, of people rising up from the dead, and all the while this violence raged just outside. The four of them survived that night unscathed, but their luck did not last for long.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
- Her sister and her mother were the ones that kept her safe for so long. They were smart, resourceful, and both had more of a will to survive than her. They packed up the van and tried to get out of town, into the country where the population wouldn't be so overwhelming. By the time they realized this plan was futile it was already too late. They were forced to abandon the van and most of their belongings on the side of a road. Traveling was hard for them, between Josies constant whining and her Nephew having to stop every ten minutes because his feet hurt or he had to pee. It took them longer than expected to get back to any sort of civilization and even then they were hard pressed to find food, and a safe place to bunker down.
They survived for a while on canned food, and Josie knew how to set traps (though it was rare that anything ever got caught in them.) They were always avoiding other people and walkers, afraid that one wrong step would end in disaster. Until the days began to look truly grim for them. Food had run dangerously low, the traps were no longer working, and they had fallen into a sort of depressing pattern of running and hiding.
One day her mother and sister left to find supplies. Her sister was the only one to come back. Josie never asked, because she already knew the answer. It was a year in by then, and as their desperation grew they stopped trying to avoid other survivors. It took the both of them playing victim, luring in other survivors whenever they could only to turn around and kill them once they had their backs turned. Sometimes they let them live, others times they didn't. It only mattered that they got the supplies.
It changed when they encountered a group too large for them to handle. Playing the victim hadn't worked well this time and they both found themselves staring down the barrel of a loaded gun. Josie, fearing for her life had used a concealed switchblade to take her attacker by surprise, managing to run from the situation. She wanted to go back and save her sister, but her cowardice had carried her on aching legs as far away as possible.
After that there was nothing more she could do, she took what little supplies she still had left and continued on her way. Unknowing whether her sister and Nephew had survived. The guilt weighing heavy on her for a long time. Now she spends her days much the same as in the beginning, setting traps when she can and avoiding other people. At one point she found a nifty hiding place to stay a while, where she found an old bicycle that could take her back home, back to where she really wanted to be.
