Prior to the Apocalypse: The Snow family's history of outdoor recreation goes back to Dakota's great-grandfather, Bernie Snow. He was a WWII vet, who bought some land up in Lake County, CA after the war. During the Cold War, he became concerned and obsessed with preparing his family to survive nuclear war or invasion by the Soviet Union. He built the cabin with fallout shelter that his great-grandchildren, lone surviving grandchild and grandchild's wife would take shelter in during the early apocalypse.
Bernie's Cold War survivalist zeal would trickle down through the generations into a shared love of the outdoors. A love Dakota inherited. She and the rest of her family got to exercise it at the cabin. That's where Dakota's father and uncle imparted Bernie's survivalist wisdoms to her. Fishing, hunting, trapping to live off the land. She even got a drive the old beat up family pick up around her family's private land sometimes.
Aside from her own love of the outdoors, she loved animals and exploring. She would often bring up home any small animal, usually babies, she found poking around.
Her father and his dad, died in a car accident, about a year before the apocalypse. A transformative event in any child's life, she went from cheerful and outgoing to somber and quiet with animals and the outdoors more important to her than ever.
Post Apocalypse: When the apocalypse broke out, the Snows happened to all be together in Dakota's and her mom's home in San Francisco. Dakota's uncle and aunt were in the city from up in Lakeport, CA. Her aunt, uncle and cousins lived there up near the cabin. It wasn't just a family visit, Dakota's aunt had follow-up medical appointments to make sure her breast cancer was still in remission.
Dakota's mother was bitten in the first couple days, and turned at the hospital. As the hospital grew overrun by the blood of bite victims turning, the Snows were forced to flee with the rest of the living. With the Golden Gate Bridge closed, they're 2 and half hour drive home was turned into a 9 hour ordeal through detours and backstreets all the way around San Francisco Bay. They found Lakeport on the verge of chaos too, so to the family cabin they went for refuge.
At the cabin, they actually made go of it, Dakota and her cousins honing the survival skills they had developed for recreation, now out of necessity. They might have even held out for years, but for Dakota's aunt. The breast cancer relapsed, and without modern treatments, Dakota's aunt was dead in a month. Dakota learned the hard way, you don't need to be bit to turn. Only luck, kept her from getting killed and turned with the rest of her family.
Luck and the sacrifice of her older cousin, April, so Dakota and her younger cousin, Max, could escape. Dakota found herself alone to look after her six year old cousin.
Dakota and Max stayed in the hunting blind, the Snows had built up in a tree after that. She was left with the decision to stay, and try to survive and protect Max on her own... or set out to look for the only family she was not sure was alive or dead. Her mother's twin sister and baby sister.
Afraid of not finding food away from familiar land, she chose to stay. The extra ammunition for her grandfather's hunting rifle was also all inside the cabin with her zombified family. She was lucky enough to nab just the rifle in their frantic flight from her newly undead aunt and uncle.
For two weeks they scraped by on the meager rewards of Dakota keeping up the line of snares her uncle had set up. Growing hunger drove the two to a daring stunt, where they quietly opened the cabin doors, and hid to wait for the walkers inside to come out. Dakota hoped they would just wander away. Her cousin and sun meandered out into the woods in about three hours, but it was until twelve hours total that he uncle wandered out and away too.
The ammunition and supplies inside brought Max and Dakota away fro the edge of desperation... for at least four more weeks. The strain of keeping her little cousin alive and safe took its toll. Often sleep deprived, one night Dakota was just too tired to go with Max and each for danger on a late night bathroom break.
She awoke but a few minutes later to his scream. He had fallen from the tree, and still down below. She made sure to take the rifle to fend off anything they might be down there with her cousin. Max groanded and growled when she called to him. In a blur, he was up and lurching for Dakota. The poor boy's head was at a most unnatural angle. Dakota deflected her little cousin back, and pleaded for him to stop. The small walker just lurched for her again, and in terrified reflex she pulled the trigger.
Dakota didn't wait around after that. she packed up the beat up pickup she had driven maybe a few time before around private land of her family, and drive off toward I-5 with only the vaguest notion of finding her missing aunts from her mother's side. (With group's help her aunts were later found deceased and butchered post-mortem to feed the remaining survivors at the Starlite, Starbrite Motel in Reno. In the end, all of the Starlite, Starbrite survivors succumbed to starvation despite their desperate measures.)
