Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Born out of wedlock, Lachy never knew his father and two years after his birth, his biological mother put him up for adoption, having struggled down to her last dollar and unable to provide. By that time, he was in poor health and his foster placement was delayed as he spent time in the pediatric ward recovering. When he was healthy enough to be placed, he went to a foster family that used him to collect government stipends until he turned five and the monthly allowance dropped. At that time, the church took him in as a ward of the boarding school.
During the summer months, he was fostered in respite care homes. Many families in this line of fostering ended up seeking to adopt the children staying with them, but not the families that Lachy stayed with. He was a trouble maker. Mostly due to the ill-humor of a child that had never been taught better, he pulled puppy tails and drew on the walls. He slammed doors, faught with other kids, and stomped about in flower beds. It wasn't until he was ten that a family from the states showed interest in adopting him.
The initial process took a year and he almost backed out once, afraid to board the plane more than anything. He would be leaving the country in which he was born and have to adjust to a different culture, although he did speak fluent English. Finally, he was in his adoptive home at age eleven and a half.
His new parents had taken countless hours of adoption education classes for raising an older child of the system and it showed. Lachy's behavior started to turn around, despite his initial phase of resisting. He saw that they never got angry with him as he was used to and became more willing to obey, even starting to seek their praise.
That was all well and good, but Lachy wasn't the only child in the home. He had an older brother, Brenden, who was a biological son. Brenden had grown out of the "wanting-a-little-brother" phase by the time the adoption was finalized and didn't care much for Lachy. At first, he showed little interest, but then when they were alone, he had a tendancy to be violent. Lachy hid the bruises, afraid to rock the boat. The abuse became sexual in nature a year after and steadily grew worse. Still, Lachy never said anything until he could no longer endure it.
He went to his parents who were shocked and doubtful. But they gave him a fair chance. However, an investigation brought up no hard proof and they turned on him, defending their blood son and aparently remorseful about having bought into Lachy's accusations. He was sent away in disgust and returned to the foster system where he would stay until he aged out.
At eighteen, he was put out on the streets with a parting sum of $200. Of course, that didn't last long and the homeless, unemployed young man decided he only had two choices: prostitution or theft. He chose the latter. He became a purse snatcher and broke into parked cars, stealing petty amounts and ruining many peoples' days.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
Lachy was hitchhiking when they hit a major backup. The trucker got on the CB and got a lot of confused feedback. Some of the things being reported were shocking and Lachy climbed up onto the roof of the truck to get a better view. He was getting ready to climb down and jog ahead when he heard screaming and saw a flood of people running in between the cars. Cardoors were opening and blocking people and the whole scene quickly became congested. Lachy watched the screaming and panic intensify, trying to make sense of what was happening, until finally, he saw his first walker attacking an elderly man.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Since the highway massacre, Lachy has been almost constantly on the move. He is social enough that he likes to join up with groups, but self-isolating enough that he doesn't get attached to any of them. He sees strength in numbers, although out in the open, has found that smaller groups function best. He prefers to be a scout or runner. In two years, he has not progressed himself very far and is running out of will-power to continue without a purpose or any end in sight.
