Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Prior to the apocalypse, Jacoby failed to find any sense of normalcy in his life. It was not for lack of trying, but he started life with a dysfunctional home situation, and subconsciously decided one day that he was doomed to repeat it all. He was born to a single mother, the son of a well-to-do man who would never claim him. Raised by only his mother and his grandmother for the first seven years of his life, Jacoby's world took a drastic change when his mother married a man she'd met while working as a waitress. Together she and his step-father had six more children, making Jacoby the eldest of seven. Life changed a lot for him. It became what seemed, on the outside at least, to be a very average, middle class existence. The family was never close, though, and a combination of verbal abuse and benign neglect would make them distance themselves further from one another.
Always a loner, Jacoby didn't have many friends during his youth or in the years prior to the outbreak. He had one best friend, and a handful of acquaintances whose names he couldn't always recall. He doesn't always like being on his own, but he never could grasp the intricacies of socializing. What he feels most people seem to understand, he never could. Still, when he did form attachments, he felt a deep bond. His only best friend - Jon - became more than for some time. Jacoby eagerly tried to find his place, but never could. Jon maintained a relationship with a girl through high school, always treating Jacoby as a second option. When Jon wasn't around, Jacoby became the victim of somewhat intense bullying. He dealt with his first bout of depression in the 9th grade, and it progressively got worse. He struggled with depression, self-image issues, and eating issues through most of high school, and it all followed him into adulthood.
Upon graduation, Jon married the girlfriend he'd been seeing, and he and Jacoby slowly began to drift apart as a result. Jacoby married Patricia on impulse, because he believed it was the thing to do. She helped him through college, and later police academy, but neither of them were ever happy with the other. Still, they made it work. They had five children together, Jacoby picked up a job as an officer, she had a job of her own. For some time, Jacoby felt as though he had almost found normality. The marriage didn't last, though, and when the two split it was a mutual divorce. They held shared custody of the kids, but both agreed that the better arrangement was permanent residence with Patricia.
After the divorce, he busied himself in his work. Jacoby became so dedicated to the job, that it was essentially the only thing that mattered to him. It wasn't until a couple years later that he met his life partner. He'd never imagined he'd settle down with a man, but he was happier with him than he'd been in a long time. Despite the other's drinking problem, and his own problems, he began to look forward to coming home. He got a dog, they moved in together, and he felt like he almost had normalcy. He'd never imagined it would be taken away.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
Jacoby had taken a rare day off. He was home when it happened. By himself, he had gotten a call from his ex-wife. The call was short, and so frantic that he couldn't really make sense of anything other than that she was leaving. He never heard the end of the call to know where she was headed. Not that he'd have left right away, either. He spent that day waiting for Peter to return home. Anxiously pacing the house, trying to pretend things were normal, but the escalating scene outside proved they were anything but. By the next day, he knew he couldn't remain in his neighborhood any longer. Not safely, anyway. Jacoby left, never knowing what became of his partner. He took his dog, and left a note, never giving up hope that he'd find it and seek Jacoby out.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Jacoby searched for his family or for Jon after that first day, but he was never able to find any of them. He traveled in his old cruiser for a while, until it ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere. He's jumped from transportation since. Occasionally he'll have some mode of transportation to get him around, but he mostly travels by foot, sticking near groups when he can. Occasionally, he even managed to work his way into a group. He traveled with a fairly large group across North Carolina for some time. He never had to speak, he just eased his way in slowly. It was the first time a group had accepted his silence, and they'd appreciated having someone who could run fast – a talent that definitely made him useful. Deaths within the group eventually caused the unity to shatter, and the survivors went parted. Most of them parted in pairs, Jacoby included. His partner, a man who called himself Billy, disappeared near the South Carolina boarder. Jacoby still does not know what happened to him. He has developed a tendency of convincing himself those who have disappeared on him are still alive. It is the hope that he'll find them or they'll find him that sometimes keeps him going. Other times, he realizes how incredibly naive that is.
