Describe life before the Apocalypse:
Ryan grew up with his mother, father and two older sisters in Cleveland, Ohio. He was well cared for and his family were both loving and kind towards him. He went to college and studied Journalism, later becoming a full-time journalist and moving out of his family home to an apartment in the city. He met his boyfriend Jamie through his work as a journalist and the two began a relationship. Ryan's family were very accepting of his sexuality and encouraged him to be himself, like they'd always done.
What happened on Outbreak Day:
On the day of the outbreak Ryan was visiting the radio tower outside of the city with his colleague, Natasha, to interview the workers about there experiences at the tower. Whilst there, reports started coming in about the outbreak and what was happening in the city. Ryan made contact with Jamie briefly, who was trapped in the school that he worked at, before the phone lines went down. Though Ryan wanted to go to help him, Natasha convinced him to stay at the Radio station telling him that it was too dangerous to go to the city.
Life after the Apocalypse:
Ryan remained at the Radio Tower with Natasha and some of the workers after the outbreak. They survived for a while, but the walkers started filtering out of the city and some of them found their way up to the tower. Most of the workers were killed trying to flee, though some managed to escape. Ryan remained in the radio tower along with Natasha, too scared to leave and emotionally bereft after the loss of Jamie.
The walkers passed by the radio tower, leaving nothing but bloodstains of the radio tower workers who had been devoured. Days passed with just Ryan and Natasha in the building, aloe together. Neither of them wanted to leave the tower, too scared of what might happen.
Eventually, Natasha couldn't take anymore and Ryan found her in one of the bathrooms. She'd hung herself. She was a walker when he found her and he was terrified. It took him a while, but he knew that he had to kill her. She was a friend and he couldn't leave her like that. He managed to do it with a pocket knife found in one of the drawers in the kitchen. He knew that he'd never be the same again, and contemplated ending his own life just like Natasha.
A couple of days later, a group arrived in an RV and he helped them, taking his mind away from the tortures he'd endured. He realised that he wanted to live and fight the dead things outside. Despite the fact that one of the group had a problem with his sexuality, he felt happy and grateful for the newcomers and the way they'd “saved” him.
He travelled with them to a motel and they made a camp there. He found himself constantly thinking about Jamie, he had to tell himself over and over that Jamie was gone. That he was dead. On the third night of their stay, Ryan found himself being kissed by Toby. He realised that the best way to stop thinking about Jamie was to start thinking about someone else, so he began a relationship with Toby.
The stay at the motel was short lived when a group of men attacked and took the group hostage. Despite enduring torture and humiliation, Ryan and Toby were amongst those who managed to escape.
