Sarah listened to her, but didn't say anything at first, "How many are you thinking you will bring back, do you have any idea of a number?" She glanced at the door, 'I will make sure Abby and Max know what your feelings are. I want to talk to Louis as well, find out what he thinks about the food situation." She leaned back against the wall, 'Just, make sure he comes back, even if things go bad, bring him home to me, please." She didn't look at Amber, while she said it, but after she was done, she stared at her, "I need to take care of him." She wiped her eyes, to get the tears out of them. She was afraid of losing Charles more than anything, so she understood how Amber felt about her friends, they were family, she got that.Didn't make her worry less for Charles, but she understood.
So he wasn't excepted right away after all. Tyler guessed if they handn't met the two other women here, that he would be already joining this group. Max and Abby both saw what he could do, an he had helped them. Sarah seemed grateful for that, and that alone was enough to let him stay. He hoped they didn't lump him in with the other two girls, as nice as they seemed he would take his safety over their's. He didn't know them, and wouldn't stick is neck out until he did.
Their little intro was finished, and then came the hard part. The one girl, named India, went first. He could hear the questions asked and expected the same. When it was his turn he went in and sat across from the doctor. The man had only one leg, Max had told him the story. Apparently the two were best friends, had been through a lot. Brian had lost it from a bite, Max chopped it off himself. To Tyler that sounded like they were both badass.
He showed Brian his arms, and legs. He was bite free. When the doctor offered pain meds he declined. "Im fine Doc, bruising heals. Save it for someone else's mistakes." Tyler smiled and winced a little at the pain. He slipped through the curtains again and it was Inola's turn. While he waited he looked at India. "So come here often," he asked with a little smirk.
Once the last girl was done Brian came out. He spoke about a barn, and soup. Tyler nodded. He lead the girls back out the the yard, and looked around for the guy serving soup. Tyler walked up and got a bowl, taking a seat near the fire. He hoped the two new girls would join him, he felt like a stranger, at least he knew their names.

"If I can I'd bring them all back. They have mostly workers, people that can be used for guards and for runs. I told Thad all I could, he said they have people there that can work on finishing the wall. He also mentioned an engineer, someone to help with things we can figure out. Then there's a cook and a nurse, we could use those. If his numbers are right, we are looking at bringing back nine people including them, maybe more." She loosened her stance. "I know it's a lot of mouths to feed, but these people will actually help. The others we've taken in, they have been more liabilities than assets, but we could'nt leave them either."
Sarah hit her with soemthing hard, she could feel her passion for Charles. "I will," she said, "if all goes right he will be back fine. I will put him before everyone else, he won't be harmed." Amber swallowed a lump in her throat. "I think he needs this. He has been going through somethig and needs time away. He has been cooped up here. That and his hand, he hasn't been the many I met at Fort Bragg. If you could come I would say you should, but we need the space, and you need to stay here, lead and protect this place." Amber put her arms to her side. "He'll be fine, I promise."
Amber turned to leave, "now I think I should be getting to bed. I plan to leave early, so may not see you in the morning. Have a good night Sarah."
Sarah felt relieved when Amber spoke. She watched Amber and saw that she had emotions afterall. She smiled , "Thank you." she nodded, "bring back who you can and we will figure something out. We always do." She chuckled softly and nodded when Amber said she was going to bed, 'Good night, and good luck." She watched Amber leave the house and leaned against the wall. Brian had let the three leave , she assumed they had a clean bill of health and he had sent them out to get some food. She stopped in and poked her head in on him, "All good?" She smiled, "I am gonna go and make sure they get something to eat, need anything?" She waited then headed out the back door through the kitchen. She spotted Tyler sitting by the fire, and saw he had gotten food. She looked around for the other two,as she moved over towards the fire pit."You got something to eat, that's good. It might not be much, but we are working on it. Louis has big plans." She chuckled softly and smiled .
Inola sat quietly and waited for her turn. She smiled at India when she came out, and then Inola went in when Tyler came back out. She studied the doctor for a moment as she sat down across from him. "I do not have any allergies or need any special medication." Her arms were already bare from her soft leather vest, and she turned them over and lifted them up in order for Brian to carefully check for bites and scratches. Her dark hair was pulled atop her head to show her neck and shoulders. As for showing her legs, she instantly untied her leather pants and stepped out of them.
"No bites, scratches, or infections. I've been taking care of just myself ever since the break out. It is easier to care for one than for many. You have a big job here, Brian, caring for such a large group. How do you get the special medication people need?"
She pulled her pants back up and tied the knot tight. "My medical knowledge isn't very extensive, but I do know how to relieve headaches, prevent infection, aaaannnnd treat nausea which will help with your friend's morning sickness. In fact, I think I have some herbs you can give her to make a tea when she starts feeling ill." Rummaging in her backpack, she pulled out an old Altoids container and a box of Earl Grey tea. "Here are three tea bags. I'd suggest using them sparingly. I get about three uses out of one tea bag. And here are fresh peppermint leaves. Peppermint tea is very easy on the stomach and will help to keep her food down."
She was surprised to find out a group was heading to Charlotte. "I'd really like to go with them if they'd allow it. I haven't been able to get too close alone with the place overrun."With that, she smiled at Brian again and stepped back into the larger room.

With her back pressed to the side of the barn, the girl with the patchy blonde hair and half-melted features turned her head to look at him sharply for a moment. Her lopsided glare seemed to be a constant expression ever since he had come across her on the road; the ‘good’ side of her sun-kissed face was crumpled tightly into a furrowed brow and her jaw set like granite, while the other struggled to mirror its expression through tight, angry flesh and her unseeing eye.
She gave him a look for a minute, somewhere between confused and irritated, as if she was about to ask why she would go into the barn in the first place, but then he pointed out the people inside and some of the creases between her brow filled out. She kinked her neck to peer between the wooden planks over her shoulder as well, finally catching onto the movement within and nodded stiffly that she agreed. The last thing she wanted was to be confronted by the farm residents. If she could take the tire without notice, she was going to go out of her way to do it…
He asked if she saw any tires, but her glare provided the answer; she looked frustrated underneath her ire, clearing not finding a suitable vehicle within view. But then the dark-skinned man pointed out the pile out in the crop field, which seemed to be the source of most of the thick smoke hanging in the night air. It was cloying and made her nostrils sting. The smell of burning hair and skin threatened to lift her guts up into the back of her throat, but she pushed away memories attached to that stink. If she got distracted by the flames now, things were going to get messy.
He suggested they move from behind the barn and at least Nancy was with him on that idea; it would mean they were further away from the makeshift pyre, if not closer to the vehicles.
Nodding that she was ready to move, the skinny, sweaty tomboy lifted her rifle tight to her chest, pressing the cool barrel against her wrinkled cheek and hunched over her weapon as she kept low. Treading through the long grass clumping the rear of the barn, Nancy moved along its length to the edge furthest from the house before leaning out enough to check the corner was clear- she had to look over her shoulder to use her right side and her single, working eye. After a moment she flicked a hand in her wake with a ‘follow me’ gesture and darted around the turn.
To her right was the Humvee and some of the other cars parked around the rear of the house, to her left she could hear the voices of the people standing out front dying down. The gathering there was breaking up and people were starting to break away, wandering in all directions, which increased their chances of being spotted. She grit her teeth and withheld the groan at her bad timing.
Looking back to check that the man still followed, she pointed towards the Humvee to let him know that was her first target before she risked leading out a few paces from the safety of the barn side wall. The shadow still covered her, but there was an open swath of lit grassy yard between the girl and the hulking truck. She hesitated on the edge of the gloom, her head darted back and forth from the truck ahead to the left where the farm dwellers clustered like a nervous rabbit. Her shoulders hunched and she let out a breath, then lurched forward.
The light from the farmhouse washed over her momentarily, lighting up the golden strands of her messy hair and her bare arms glistened with their thick coating of sweat by the glow as she moved, trying to keep her steps light even as she dashed across the break.
Reaching the rear of the Humvee, the girl disappeared behind its bumper, putting the bulk of the truck between her and the house now and dropped into a crouch by its back wheel arch, waiting to hear the sounds of alarm that would signal she had been spotted…
Paul was pressed up against the building, he took short breaths. He watched the girl glare at him, and look in the barn. When she made her way around a corner he followed, just as she gave the signal. He kept close to her, but was still a few steps away. All around Paul could hear talking, some laughter, and people discussing various things. He couldn't hear most of it, it all sounded like white noise.
He watched her point to the Humvee and nodded. It was an army issued one, made him think of Fort Bragg, his destination after all this. Maybe these people were the ones he was seeking, or maybe they killed the residents of Fort Bragg. Or it could be a coincidence, after two years a person could have any weapon or vehicle.
He watched her dart across the grass, and took a breath. She made it, no one shouted, or fired a gun. She seemed to be in the clear. Paul poked his head out, he could see the sniper, one close to the Humvee, on a support a few paces in front of the Humvee. The other was across the yard, barely visible agaisnt the flame of the fire. He could see another fire burning, this one a camp fire, people gathered around it.
Paul looked across the grass. He had to move fast. Paul ran ahead, to the Humvee corner as she had. No one saw him, but there was still no tire in sight. He pressed against the car, breathing heavily. He clutched his pistol, his palms sweating onto the grip. He looked up again, but saw nothing. "Keep moving, there has to be one here," he whispered to the blonde girl before him.
Brian was surprised that all three cooperated without even questioning it. This was the first people they had actually join the farm, so he didn't know how he would have reacted if the did. He was going off what he had done in Fort Bragg, or what he would have done if they had eventually found some one. Maybe they should hve stayed there. Concrete walls were easier to manage than this makeshift junkyard wall. They had more room at Fort Bragg, and a whole medical wing. In time the farm would get just as many raiders as Fort Bragg had, he hoped they were ready.
The first two didn't have questions, which was alright. If they were to stay they would learn quickly. One question he himself would have asked would have been about the large population of female occupants at the farm. The men were out numbered, only about five or so men on the farm. He also would have asked about power, water, about the wall, raiders. Brian would have answred instead he didn't have to.
Inola made him curious the most. She at least asked a question about the medication. "I make a list, and Amber or Becky searches for it. We are running low, which is why I was asking about any you need. We will eventually have to find a hospital or drug store to go through. Fort Bragg had lots of medication, we took all that with us. The rest we have found. We alos use it sparingly." He pointe to his missing leg, "I could be taking pain pills for days, instead I just push past it." Brian smiled. "And I'm sure your herbs and all that would help. You'd have to talk to Abby about actually taking it, I know she's be reluctant. If you stay, maybe you could grow herbs in the garden Louis started."
"As for Charolette. You need to talk to Amber for that. She was the one who questioned you three with me. If you want to ask, I would hang back when the others go to get food. She'll be just off the kitchen, probably about to go to bed. She and Charles are waking up early tomorrow to go, so they need sleep." He followed her out.
India said thank you, and he watched them leave the area. Brian went back into the medbay, he started to write down a list of everything they would need.
India found the bowl of soup that was intended for her and as hungry as she was, this could have been made with ditch water and old paper and it would still taste good to her. She saw Tyler move towards the fire and decided to join him there. The warmth from the flames felt good against her skin as she held the bowl in her hands, sipping lightly from it. He was the one that offered her a ride in the back of his truck so she felt obligated to this conversation. Not that that was a bad thing. She could use a little human interaction.
"Thanks for the ride here. This place seems nice enough."
She didn't seem as good at conversation as she once was. Back in Boston, she had lots of friends and college buddies to talk to about a variety of things like pop culture, studies and travel. Now? None of that seemed to matter anymore, but she was willing to try.
"So, Tyler, where did you come from? What did you use to do before all this?"
Tyler felt the heat on his skin as he sat on a lawnchair in front of the fire. His boots rested on the dirt below him. His bowl was in his lap, a plastic spoon sitting in the bowl. He looked at the fire. It was a different heat than it had been earlier. This one was soothing, didn't make his clothes wet from the sweat. He stared into it, taking the odd bite.
He saw a figure approach, and slowly looked up. It was India, one of the girls he had met with Abby. She thanked him for the ride and he nodded, smiling as he did. "Don't thank me," he laughed, "it was Abby who made the call to bring you and the Cherokee. I was just the truck for them, helping Max." He finished his bowl. "Hey what meat do you think was in there, I can't place it, taste wild though."
He leane back, sunk lower into the seat. She asked him questions and he smiled. He ha already answered them all, in front of her with the whole group, but he would aswer again. "I'm from Alabama, small shit hole in the middle of fuck ass no where." He looked at her, "I did shit all. Someone needed muscle, then I was muscle. I stole card, drove gangsters. I picked up packages. I did whatever I could to get by. I drove truck for a bit, shipping, washed dishes." He folded his hands. "What a bout you? You said college?"
India took a sip of her soup and tried to savor what sort of meat that was.
"Squirrel. I think it's squirrel. Makes sense. Small game makes for good soup."
She didn't think they would waste chicken or beef on them. Give them the easy to catch game to eat and get their strength back up. She sat on the floor with him and listened as he spoke about his past. He came from the deep south and seemed to be a criminal of sorts. He did what he had to do to get by.
"I've never been to Alabama. I hear it's pretty there." Sort of. Even though northerners made fun of southerners. By all she had heard, she pictured people with few teeth living in over crowded trailer parks. Didn't sound like much of a life to her.
"Yes, I was in college. I was a world history major, from Boston. I spent a lot of time in the library when I wasn't camping on the weekends. I used to love to go out camping. Me and my friends would make big bonfires, have beer, make s'mores, go fishing. I guess I'm an outdoorsy type of gal."
She smiled to him and finished off her soup, setting the bowl down and waiting for him to down the rest of his.
"You think squirrel? We are eating from the same pot they are. This is their celebration, I don't know what but it's theirs. Actually yeah, the meat in here is probably squirrel, but it's cooked with a deer bone. You could see it in the pot." He smiled, "makes the soup absorb the flavour of the deer or something. Obviously these people aren't worried about vegetarians." He smiled, "it's good though."
She spoke about Alabama and he nodded. She was probably thinking of the sterotypes, red necks, trailer parks, and poor white trash. He didn't see that, he lived in a cabin of the forrest. Or in cities. "It's nice, beautiful scenery. Not everyone's cup of tea, but hey it's home. Also left the first thing I could, but hey it's home." He laughrd a bit and leaned back his chair.
"So you are the scholar type, but ain't no sissy either." He smiled again, "nothing wrong with camping and fishing, did my fare share of it. You miss all that? Shooting shit with your friends and spendng days on the lake or with your nose in a book." Beside him near his foot sat a bottle, between bites he would take a sip. "It's no beer, but it was on the table." He waved it infront of her, "want a sip? Loosen you up a bit, may help relax." He set it down beside her and finished his bowl.
"I was alone for a long time," he said between bites, "how long has it been since the start? Well that long." He laughed, "I ran across people, but didn't stay with them. What about you? You look like a person who has groups, but doenst stil around." He finished his bowl and placed it beside him. As he looked aroud he smiled.
"What you think of this place? I mean it has the wall, open gaps in it, but hey it's a wall. See some big vehicles, all look military. And what's with all these women here? The whole time I was here Ive seen about four men, not including myself."
"You know, I like camping and fishing and all that, but I always enjoyed getting back to my dorm and back to class. I mean, camping is fun, but honestly, I miss the city."
She sat back on the floor as he spoke about being alone. She was alone, here and there, mostly jumping from group to group and figuring out where she was supposed to fit in now. Every time she thought she was settled, some new horde came along and forced everyone to scatter.
"I've been with groups here and there. I've been alone for the past month now. I mean, the quiet has been nice, but I think I'm a little more social then that." She chuckled as she said that, stretching her legs out with the bottom of her feet towards the fire. She leaned back on her hands and looked over to him.
"So you're in it for all the girls then?" She laughed and shook her head as she looked towards the window. "I can honestly say I've never slept in a barn before. There is always a first for everything though, right?"
"Yeah, I never liked the city, always to busy. I seemed to get stuck in traffic every time. A town, or small city maybe. I found them to congested. Geuss now it's a different kind of congested. When's the last time you've been to a city? I was in one, don't remember where. Place was picked clean and filled with rotters. I now only try and stay to farm houses and small towns."
He looked at her, watched her move. He moved around a lot, never in one place for more than a day. He often slept in his car. The same car parked on some dirt road between here and the other farm house. Maybe he could use the crane truck he saw to go and get it. It was he only thing he had left in this world, the only thing from his past life.
"Don't get me wrong I like people, socializing. It's just safer alone." He smiled, "and no it's not just the women. Most of them aren't to friendly from what I heard. The way Max sold this place, it's safety, and all it had. It was to good to pass up. Plus, he promised me they had booze, and guns." He paused, "you haven't met Max have you, he's a great guy, with the Abby girl. He told me a lot of shit about this place. How they killed some young guy today, some guy who went against what they said, was risking everyone's life."

Jay turns and walks outside, cracking his neck as he went. He drops down on the front step of the porch and leans back against the wooden banister. He looked over to the woods and lets out a small sigh. He needed to be away from the new people for a little bit so he doesn't let his insecurity about newcomers show. It was nothing against them, he was just wary about new people walking in and out.
Sarah stood there by the fire staring at Tyler and India. It seemed they both just wanted to be left alone, since Tyler ignored her even being there. She shrugged and moved away, going over to Louis, "Here, let me help you clean up, I need something to do, and you look like you could use some help." She smiled at the man, and picked up a few handfuls of dirty dishes and went into the kitchen through the back door. She nudged Jay as she passed him, "Be a good boy and give us a hand bringing these dirty dishes in, will you, Sweetie?" She smiled at him and then vanished into the house to run some dish water.
From her crouched position at the rear of the Hummer, the girl looked more annoyed by the minute as he encouraged her to keep moving… “Ain’t nothin’ big nuff on th’ o’ers,” she hissed back to him through gritted teeth.
The other vehicles were not half as large as the old Silverado, therefore the tires on them would be woefully too small to accommodate the truck very far. The Hummer wasn’t right either, she could see that just by glancing over her shoulder at the height of the tire which rose higher than her shoulder. By the spare might be a smaller fit, even a ‘doughnut’ would be better than nothing…
“Watch m’ back.” was all she said to him before she started crawling for the far side of the huge truck, turning the corner around the back wheel to slip into the shadow between the Hummer and the farmhouse.
Using the bulk of the truck to hide her, she slowly straightened a little and threaded an arm through the shoulder strap of the Remington rifle so it could be shrugged to rest on her back and free her hands. Hunched to try and keep the shadow of her head from casting on the windows, Nancy tried the back passenger door to test if it was unlocked.
If the Hummer was open, she was going to try and get inside to check under the floor of the trunk…
Inola nodded to Brian, "I would love to work in the garden, and I will speak to Amber about going. Thanks for the tip."
Upon exiting, she spotted the woman, Amber, speaking with Sarah. She waited until their conversation was finished before approaching. "Amber, Brian told me you were going to Charlotte tomorrow morning. I would like to go with you if that is alright. I didn't realize there was a group trapped there, and I am hoping my parents are with them. I am a good shot with a bow and arrow, and I have knives and such. I would really like to help get those folks to safety."
Depending on Amber's answer, Inola would answer her questions and then follow her stomach to the table where a bowl of soup was waiting for her. She sat at the table and picked up the spoon. Squirrel. She was very familiar with the taste as it was the meat she ate most these days. Plentiful and easy to catch.
When she finished her meal, she took her spoon and bowl and walked into the kitchen. Offering a smile to Sarah she said, "I'm happy to help with the dishes if you'd like some." She was used to the prejudices people had against the Native Americans and beyond that, just prejudice against newcomers in established camps. It was one of many reasons why she'd lived on her own for so long. She'd been witness to murders, robberies, and folks just being turned down for safety reasons. Despite all of that, she tried to keep a friendly attitude and smile in hopes it would create a bit of pleasantness. If Sarah agreed that Inola could help, she would wash some dishes and place them on the counter.
The sound of an alarm came from no where. Becky turned and looked down, the hummer lighting up like crazy. The horn was going, and the lights flashed. They were told not to go near the vehicles at night, keys were all inside, the cars were to be locked until the wall was completely done. She was just glad it wasn't the Knight, only Charles, Max, and Sarah had prints to get in, and they were all busy.
She moved the scope of her rifel down until she found the sorce of the sound. There were people near the Humvee. Becky climbed down, and moved forward, walking with the gun as Amber had taught her. She saw Georgia do the same, both surrounding the Humvee.
Along the sides were two people, both she didt recognize. He finger was over the trigger ad she looked at the pair. "Who the fuck are you," she asked them, "get the fuck away from the truck. Hands up, drop the gun." The two women had high powered assist rifels, if they were smart they would listen.
She saw a few of the people looking from the farm, as they should be, the alarm was going off. Penny was there, and Becky turned to her, "Penny get Amber or Sarah, I think they are still up."
She turned the attention back to the two intruders. "Who are you? Why are you on our farm?"

"I am going yes," Amber said looking at the woman as she approached her. "But I'm leaving early. We need all the space we can get. If you want to come you have to follow mine and Charles's orders. You would do as we say, and if you disagree we would drop you on the side of the road. It will not be easy, but I guess you will want to find your parents at any cost. I will let you come, we will be leaving before dawn. Five thirty is the time of departure. I expect you to be up and ready for the trip by then. I will not wake you, if you are not there by the time Charles is in the truck, we will leave you behind. Your bow will be fine, I will also prepare a rifel and handgun for you. Charollete is heavy Walker populated, meaning we move fast, and don't stop. Are you clear on all this? Any objections and you are best to stay behind."
She looked on, "I heavily suggest you get some sleep now. Eat whatever you need, and sleep in the barn. That's just my suggestion. Though you can sleep in the truck as we go. If time is right, we will arrive in Charolette by early evening. You will not be required to drive, but will have to be alert. If your family is there, we will bring them home safe. Now you are free to leave."
-------
Amber was just about to go to bed when she heard the alarm. It was a car alarm and loud. She quickly turned and nearly ran into Penny who was running toward her.
"The Hummer is going crazy, Alarm went off," she said, "people out there."
Amber nodded and grabbe the keys to her vehicle. She ran forward and turned off the alarm. She could see Beck and Georgia pointing their gun at these two intruders.
"Who the fuck are they," Amber asked, rasing her handgun. "You," she pointed to the black male, "answer me."
The guy blinked, "we are friendly, don't shoot. Just looking for a tire," he said.
"And you thought you could steal from us? Now answer me. Who the fuck are you? And why are you on our fucking farm." She knew how charles would deal with this. He had killed one of their own earlier today, and these were complete strangers posing a threat. "On the ground, hands on your head, spread your legs."
Shauna Kelly: That helped, thank you
