Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse: Before the Great Panic, John Eugene Sledge - grandson to Marine veteran and Montevallo professor Eugene B. Sledge was like a lot of Southern boys; growing up in the Deep South exposed him to a lot of different things and living on a university helped expand his horizons beyond the small town he lived in. His choice of university was no secret either: like his grandfather and father before him, John Sledge enrolled at the University of Montevallo to study zoology, specifically ornithology or the study of birds. Through the first two years of his time in college, things went well....
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?: ...then came the Great Panic, when everything seemed to drop out from under the students and faculty at Montevallo University. Despite all the chaos around them and the panic-striken people coming south from Birmingham, west from Tuscaloosa and south from Montgomery, John Sledge never lost his head, never lost his cool...along with several other students and area residents, they created a Citizens Committee to run a stronghold centered around part of the University campus...
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse: ...and although the stronghold only lasted about two years (a combination of severe storms and zombie hordes eventually overran the stronghold) it had drilled into the young man a sense of duty and purpose. For the next two years or so, he'd travel north, joining strongholds here and there, until eventually arriving at the seat of American government - West Point, New York. Quickly learning a post-apocalyptic trade - for him, metalsmithing - it was another year when, after hearing of a call for volunteers for something called the Reclamation, he enlisted.
During recruit training, he was tagged as potential NCO material and so after the 10 weeks of basic training he followed it up with an eight-week NCO course, eventually being assigned to the 6th Infantry Regiment. Although having fought in Rochester, the Welland Canal and the Boston Campaign w/his comrades-in-arms, he's still the same young man he was back in Alabama - maybe with a hard shell at times, but everyone who's survived up to now has that, right?
