Jake listened to Dannie as she spoke, he nodded in agreement as she spoke about staying as group. But shortly after he didn’t agree so much as Dannie spoke about sending Veran up front. What if he stayed behind and then the others didn’t decide to go, then he would lose Veran and even though there relationship had to evolve and he didn’t know how things would go, he sure as hell didn’t want to lose Veran, cause that way he wouldn’t find out. The next words of all the people where a big blur, Jake wasn’t listening, all he could think of was what if Veran indeed wanted to leave. It would make sense cause he cared for his kid, which was good, Jake liked Dale even though the boy didn’t like him yet.
But if Veran indeed wanted to leave he had to chose between him and the group. He didn’t knew Dannie for that long, but meeting her when he did caused his mind to lighten up, when he met her, Emre and Sterling in the cabin he was in a dark place. Without them knowing they helped him through, but so did Veran, for the first time in a very long time he had feelings for a person again.
Just then he shook his head as he heard Veran his voice, his attention went immediately to the sweet pirate. He heard how Veran asked if they could talk outside. “Yeah sure, you know you can ask me anything.” Jake said softly trying to smile a bit. Then he followed Veran outside.
"Busted. Shit." Finn thought when he heard the injured guy speak his full name. He knew he was going to be exposed at some point, but he'd have preferred it if he was able to tell people himself instead and didn't expect it to happen so soon. Still, if this guy was as forgiving as Eva was it shouldn't pose that much of a problem. Still, there was no telling how the others would react on him being a professional bank robber; he was still a criminal after all. But even if they couldn't see past that part, he hoped they'd see the advantages of having a person like him in their midst. Finn could hack, crack safes and pick locks and knew his way around electrical circuits and mechanical parts. Thank you very much community college.
Finn sighed. Pretending not to know what the man was talking about would probably insult his intelligence so Finn wasn't going to bother. All he could hope for was for them all to see the person behind the bank robber, like Eva had done. And technically she was the one that caught him. He had surrendered to her after all right before she was attacked by walkers back in Los Angeles. Although saving her from them had earned him Eva's good graces, and it was the very foundation on which their friendship was built.
"That's me." Finn admitted to Sterling. He then turned toward Mia, he'd feel bad if she'd blame him for keeping things from her.
"Sorry for what you're about to find out." Finn said to Mia. "But please know I was going to tell everyone."
Finn then walked over to Sterling and stood at a comfortable distance in front of the man.
"Well... let's do this." Finn said. "So which one are you? Cop, FBI or bounty hunter?"
Mia had been quiet and listening, watching the group. It was an occupational hazzard. Always best to judge the emotions in the room. To see how everyobe was going to react to the bad news. She had sat in on those family meetings plenty of times and to her this was not much different. They were still making a deadly decision.
Hearing Sterling speak to Finn, her eyes lifted from the map and captured Finn's. What was going on? One brow rose. His words made her worry. Something bad was about to happen. She turned and followed Finn with her eyes as he moved ovet to Sterling. Hell, who was Sterling for that matter? Really? He and Dannie had been cops, she had gathered that much coming here. She wanted to know something about these people besides what went down at Bear Lake.
Mia watched as Finn spoke to Sterling. She was a little confused. What did it matter who had been a cop? Plenty of people had been lots of things before all this bullshit. Law and order died a long fucking time ago! So what did it matter , as long as people got along and helped each other?
She looked at Nate, asking with her eyes if he knew about any of this? Finn said he was going to tell them, and she believed him. Whatever it was from his past, that's what it was. His past! Hell, they all had apast and probably things they weren't proud of. He had been with them for days now and had done everything he could to pitch in and help. She was going to give him that benefit. This world changed people. Good for bad and bad for worse and sometimes it made a hero out of the bad guy.
"Ahhh, okay. I think I know who you are now." Of course Sterling would know better then she would, considering he was once a detective and she was a beat cop. Intel, information, CIs, all that stuff was not her department. But she heard his name and remembered a flyer with his picture in passing. She wondered how this was going to play out. Finn didn't tell anyone about himself and honestly, she couldn't blame him. Why would he reveal that he was a criminal before all this. He was also talking about going to the bunkers but didn't want to rob people. That, to her, made no sense at all. She had a strong sense he was lying about not wanting to rob people. "Look, whatever happened in Chicago is gone. None of that matters anymore, but if you want people to trust you, maybe it's better if you come clean."
Even she wanted to know. She didn't remember or know all the details of his past considering how many other things her job duties required her to do. Some thug with intel for detectives was just another passing name that was in an out of jail. What she didn't like was the fact Finn wasn't sure if the bunkers had anything sustainable for them to use. What if they did go there and found nothing? What if they went and found another group of marauders that would attack them like in Colorado? Was it worth the risk? She didn't want to make these decisions alone. "We need to decide what we want to do. We should vote if we go to Nebraska or not. I'm not sure if it's worth the risk for our safety. Hell, I can't even be sure going to Blue Ridge is safe or risky either, but at least I know it's there. So we vote. Majority wins. Let's not ditch the pick up truck for something larger. It will take more gas then we can probably spare. If we find one in either Nebraska or Georgia and it has gas, we'll figure out what to do then."
She waited for the others to chime in to decide what should be done. Once it was settled, they would rest for the night at the Farm store and head out at first light.
Nate saw Mia look at him and just shook his head. He didn't know anything of this man, he figured her being american she would at least have a better clue. He'd never been across the border, let alone Chicago. He knew his small town news, provincial, and maybe federal, not international. Some two bit thug wasn't on his radar.
"Dannie is right. As long as you aren't'the a serial killer or a rapist I don't care what you were before all this. I'm sure there lots of people who have changed for bad and for good. You were keeping that girl safe, should be good enough. Enough for me anyway."
He smiled and looked at Mia to see if she would agree. He didn't want to disagree with her, but he knew she would agree. If the man wouldn't endanger them there was no problem. He had a good gun and a good heart down deep, that was good enough. Nate heard Dannie speak again and looked up at her.
"I vote we hit the bunkers. If they have supplies we'll need it. Was so used to being spoon fed and safe at Bear Lake, hard to think I'll actually need to scavenge again. After that we head straight to our destination. We don't have enough resources to keep making detours, let's hope we find something."
Again he looked to Mia, this time smiling. He went and stood beside her. He placed a hand on her arm and waited for the others to answer. Ultimately he'd go with Mia. He had to keep her safe. If she decided she refused to go to the vaults then he'd go with her.
Hykeem knew who Finn was shit he knew who all of these people where even if they hadn't had a criminal background. Before the earthly hell the FBI had started using a world wide database to keep tabs on everyone in the world. Hykeem figured the system would be used as a way to control the vast population of the world but who knew now. he walked over to Sterling and Finn shaking his head.
"Let's not do this in front of the group. At least not now."
He looked at Sterling and then at Finn.
"How about we all take this outside."
Hykeem did not want Finn to be exposed like this. everyone didn't have to know the three men could just talk about it outside and then move on from there.Hykeem knew Finn wasn't the best guy in town but He wasn't either. Hykeem was a murder which was bad even if he did it for the government.
he Gestured toward the door leading outside. He waited for both men to make their decisions and he hoped it would be the right choice for the group.
Liz looked between Finn and Sterling, watching as Mia stayed silent. There was clearly a history between them although she wasn't sure it even mattered anymore. What she did worry about was Sterling's condition and continuing on the road to yet another unknown destination. Going to an unknown place wiht an unknown result seemed far too risky to her. She could defend herself in an extreme situation, but she was no marksman by a longshot. If they came across a group of raiders or a large horde of biters, she may not be able to contribute as much as she needed to. "I'm not sure going is such a good idea. I'm not sure Sterling would do well and what happens if others are there, like Finn says? You....we...can't take an attack. We don't have the weapons to fight back, do we?"
Maybe the group they met with did have some weapons, but she knew back in Colorado Remy and Sterling had their weapons stripped away as payment for a couple of guards that were shot. That's the way things were now. No lawsuits, no recompense with money, no arrests, no judge and jury. It was eye for an eye and civilization was not something that was attainable right now. At least, not yet. She mulled it over for a few thoughts and listened as Nate replied. Hykeem had nothing to say about the matter except to drag Finn and Sterling outside to finish the matter. But she agreed with Dannie. There was no point to re-hashing old crimes. If Finn wanted to come clean, he had that chance now. But it made her worry -- now that Sterling had exposed him, would he be resentful? She moved to Sterling's side and spoke up about the vote.
"I think we should go to Georgia. There's supplies everywhere if we look for them. Why take any chances?"
Mia didn't like this at all. As a nurse, she knew certain members were far to injured yo be any good with helping to raid these bunkers. Hell, there wasn't even one close and Nebraska seemed alot more than a little fucking detour.
She watched as everyone jumped in and started agreeing ot giving their opinions. Of course Nate wanted to go. He seemed to be up for anything, buy did he think it all threw?
She watched Liz and smirked. Yea, her only concern wad Sterling. That was obvious. Mia worried she wouldn't be objective about him or his well being. Liz would choose that man over all others. That was a shame. She had hoped to have a fellow voice of reason that was medically driven, but watching made it very clear it was emotional. The others would see it too. Liz's opinion would mean less and less, she figured.
Mia shook her head." Alright! Here is what I see." She held up on hand, asking for everyone to pay attemtion," wr have injured, we aren't even really a group, or have an established safe zone and you all are already yalking about splitting up and going states away looking for some buried bunkers that may, or may not even hold anything!" She shook her head," that makes no fucking sense. We should find a place, establish a safe zone. Then work on the supplies. Send teams once we are up and rolling. To me splitting now is just looking to get people killed." She glanced at Nate, then Hykeem.
Dale had his legs kicked up over an old barrel as he sat on a lawn chair nearby. He had a hat comfortably covering his face so the light would not pierce his eyelids as he slept. The rise and fall of his chest would tell anybody there that he was asleep. Even in such a position, sleep had been welcome since he had been scavenging, maybe more than most of them, and hadn't rested much since they left Bear Lake. He had woken up moments earlier, and sat motionless as he listened to everybody meet and greet. His father wasn't wrong, he felt less comfortable the more people arrived, but at the same time it wasn't chaotic like his entrance to the camp where he found his pops again.
He had heard enough, took his legs off the barrel to lean forward, and took the hat off his head and placed it on the ground next to him. He still wasn't sure about the new guy, Finn, but then again he didn't know much about most of them. It was the way he spoke, as if he was hiding something, but Dale didn't ask. Since the events at the gas station, he drew into himself even more, and hadn't really spoken to anybody since. He had thought of talking to Mia again, but didn't. He hadn't even spoken to Veran since, and knew he would think he wanted to leave. He watched as Veran took Jake to the sidelines, and heard Mia speak up to the crowd. Dale wanted to back her, but couldn't.
As if a ghost suddenly started to speak, Dale's voice carried through to Mia and anybody who would hear him out, "Mia, as lovely as a thought it is that we stick together, you can't decide for everybody what we should do at this point." He looked around, seeing the new crew. Seemed useful enough. "The larger a crowd gets, the more fights will start if we don't find some order. We need to decide now, before it gets messy, who should call the final shots, or even make a vote system to decide. I personally like the idea of a council to vote between each other. I'd rather not be part of any final decision." With those words, he moved up to the barrel, and sat on it's edge, making himself a part of the conversation. Even though he hadn't discussed it with Veran, he had decided he'd try his best to stick it out with these people.
"I don't mean this to make the group think less of him. It doesn't matter what he did before, but his skills? Yeah that is important."
He still thought of himself as a cop but that didn't mean that things carried over. If he had been a murderer? Sure that would have mattered, but stealing from banks... it wasn't even something worth worrying about now. He noticed that the conversation had resumed as if the interruption hadn't happened. No one even seemed all that interested except Hykeem who seemed to want him to bring it outside. The man seemed random, and it worried Sterling. He could understand Finn, but this man was unpredictable. In the Apocalypse that was dangerous.
"The kid has some good ideas. A group this size needs some type of leadership, without it we will have issues and it will slow us down."
He remembered the early days with his group. They had all been officers, most of them detectives, a couple swat. They had all wanted to lead, it wasn't something that was explicitly stated but it was seen. They had almost gotten them killed. After that they had reorganized quickly, leaning on rank.
"As for Finn, he already said he was planning on telling us, but like I said. Your skills are important information for this decision."
Dannie looked over to the kid who she thought was sleeping through the entire thing. Not that a kid could lead the group, but his input was just as vital as everyone else's. However, when he failed to put in his vote on if they stay or go, instead laying the heavy statement on Mia's shoulders, she spoke up. "The decision was given a vote. I guess you didn't hear that since you were sleeping, kid. She's not the only one making decisions for the group, we all are."
And so far it seemed like those that decided to weigh in felt it was better for them to get to Georgia. Mia had a good point. Find safety first, then get the supplies. Going to Nebraska was a distraction from her wish to get to Georgia. "Right now, we just need to get somewhere before we establish rules, leadership, all that."
She looked at those that were gathered in the room and the last thing she wanted to do was try and herd cats. Either they were coming or they weren't and that's the only decision that needed to be made right now. She was fine if people wanted to leave but they would have to make that decision pretty quick. Either way, she was sticking with Sterling and where he wanted to go. She had a feeling he would not have much a decision in that regard if Liz had anything to say. And the nurses were right. The injured couldn't take much more.
"Sounds like the majority vote is for Georgia, sorry Finn. Let's get some rest and roll out in the morning."
Finn didn't expect so much civility towards his past, it wasn't something he was used to. Eva had been the only one who treated him like a normal human being instead of some no good Irish hoodlum from The Town. He had expected worse from these guys but all by all they responded well towards him. He probably could thank his skills for that; who wouldn't want a professional trustworthy thief nowadays at their side?
"Alright, glad you see things that way." Finn answered Sterling. "Just for the record... I... never actually hurt anyone. Never killed anyone either, not even in this world apart from... well the ones that are already dead."
Eva's eternal righteousness and everlasting faith in humanity had caused them to get by without ever having to hurt people. Finn would never hurt anyone unless in self-defense, and the same went for killing a human being. And it was something he was hoping to postpone as long as possible.
The pirate's kid spoke up and Finn couldn't help but wonder... Didn't they just come from a place that had an actual Council? The ones with the rugmunchers in it? Still, the kid got shut up by the bossy chick who Finn wondered whether or not was the one in charge. She apologized to him for not going to Nebraska but that was no hair of his back.
"No problem, don't worry about it." Finn said. "It was a long shot anyway. Maybe we'll find some locked doors or vaults that have not yet been opened along the way."
Finn gave Sterling and Dannie a quick smile. He didn't know whether or not they were finished talking to him but he was going to retire behind the bar nonetheless. He sat down, leaning against his backpack and waited. Maybe he could get some rest before morning came.
Nate listened to everyone speak. Mia had made a good point that they needed to get safe. She had been shot not long ago, safety was the least they could give them. He looked at her and nodded in approval.
Then Dale spoke up, the kid had been quiet the last few days. He didn't know why. He started questioning what was going on saying they needed a council. A council like bear lake? Sure that would work as long as they dudnt force people to kill unarmed men. Nate smirked at the thought. There was some strong opinions in the group right now, the voting system would have to work. Way Nate say it this Dannie wasn't going to relinquish conmand.
Nate was glad Sterling, who apparently knew Fin from before, wasn't angry at him. "Way I see it Finn stealing isn't even a crime. Mugging people, yeah that still is, but stealing. I've stolen since then. Even stole the truck. Hardly a thing to make us frown down upon you."
They had decided it was going to be going to Georgia. He didn't even know where that was. "So we leave first thing in the morning? Do we want to map out a route? Think we snagged a few maps from the gas station. Until then I say we grab a good meal, enjoy each other's company, and relax. The buildings secure enough, it will hold the night."
