Max climbed into the passenger seat. He leaned against the window. As much as he didn't want to admit it, he was defeated. He could barely leave. His arms ache and his side hurt every time he moved.
"Abby. You need to drive," he said looking at her. "I can't. Charles can't. We need you to." He winced as he talked, clutching his side. He sighed and coughed, holding his sides.
He looked up at her. He didn't want her seeing him defeated again. She must think he's pathetic. Always broken, always hurt. Every moment he's been with her he was in pain. He was weak, defeated.
------
Dean looked at Charles when he climbed in the back. Whiping the test from his cheek he saw the mans hand. As much as the girl was hurt the man needed more attention. He sounds weren't fatal, she was just broken.
"I need to see your hand. Get it fixed before we have risk of infection. If it gets infected that minor wound might kill you," he said. He pulled out a med kit from the pack he had left here. "Just let me bandage and disinfect it."
Charles wanted to be close to Sarah. He needed to try and help her through what she was doubtlessly going through right now but he also knew that more then anything he needed to get his hand taken care of. The fucking fingers were still bleeding and he was starting to feel a little woozy.
"Make it quick. I have things I need to do."
Dean started working on his hand. It stung like hell when he started disinfecting it. He just about pinched the man but he knew that it had to be done.
"I don't know how you kept going with this. Your damn lucky it's not your dominant hand. At least you don't have to relearn how to shoot."
Charles glared at the man while he wrapped the hand. Lucky? What about any of this was lucky? They had not lost anyone, at least not any of his people, but this would change them. This kind of horror would leave a scar on the farm. Something that would take a long time to heal. Charles could feel his world crumbling around him. He should have came straight back and been here. He should have protected Sarah. This was all his fault.
Dean finally finished and he looked down at his hand all bandaged up. It would likely be Sarah's turn next so he moved to her. He hesitated to touch her. Knowing that right now touching her might be the worst plan he could come up with.
Abby hadn't said a word as she saw Charlie and Max climb in the knight. She was still in a bit of shock about what they had done to Sarah. Max spole to her. He needed her. She snapped out of it and focused. She crawled into the driver's seat and buckled up. She reached over and took his hand for a split second," be home soon".
Abby glanced up and followed the semi out. She didn' t say a word, kust focused on getting them back to the farm. She was lost in her own thoughts. She actually thanked god thry were still alive.
Sarah was slipping in and out. Shock, relief and her injuries were working against her. The movement of the knight made her jostled afainst the seat and she winced and groaned in pain a bit. She opened her eyes at Charles voice. Her right eue was almost swollen shut, just a small slit in that one. She drew back to the back of the seat as he spoke about someone touching her.
She swallowed,"no...please, charlie, no more" her hand , covered in her blood, reached out and grabbed his hand, just like how he pulled her out of the hole. She slide herself off the seat and curled into his lap on the floor of the truck," don't go,don't leave me ," tears tried to slip from her eyes. She just wanted to feel safe.
Charles wrapped her in his arms and waved off Dean. Her injuries didn't seem bad enough to not be able to wait at least a minute. She was bleeding and beaten but he didn't see anything that needed immediate attention. He prayed to god that he was correct (Please keep her safe. I don't always believe in you but she does. She is one of you children.) He slowly stroked her hair.
"It's ok. I'm not leaving you. Your safe. I'm here, I won't leave you alone. I'll help you, anything. I promise."
He just held her like that, tears streaming down his face. No one would hurt her again. He wouldn't ever take risks like he had before. He realized right then and there that he loved this woman. Was in love with her, and he wouldn't let anything hurt her again.
"I'm sorry, I should have been there. I should have taken you with me."
He wanted to lash out and hurt something. It wasn't purr rage but a rage mixed with hurt. He had seem the most important thing in his world almost torn away from him. He had never even told her how important she was to him.
"I love you Sarah, you are the most important thing in my life."

Max looked over at Abby and smiled. He couldnt help but stare at her. His mind raced to what would happen if she was in there, in Sarah's place. He balled his fists and exhaled slowly. All those men would have died. He'd have hunted everyone of them down. Max sighed. This was why he wanted Abby with him. She wasn't going to leave Brian or His sight at all times.
Reaching over slowlt he touched one of her arms. "We're safe," he said quietly. We made it. Can finally rest."
He smiled at her, "my ribs hurt. I can feel my hand. My shoulders bleeding and I'm still sore from getting hit by your bat and getting shot," he winced as he moved towards her, "but we made it. We're safe. For now."
Sarah rested her head against his chest. She could hear his heartbeat. After almost two years of being constantly together, he was the only one that she would allow to get this close to her after this ordeal. She trusted him so completely, he had been by her side through this new world and had proven himself to her many times. She had often told him what a good man he was because it was her faith in God and him that had gotten her this far.
She lifted her head, wincing a bit, trying to be strong for him. Deep within her, along with her prayers, she knew he would come. Sarah never doubted that Charlie would come for her. Her good eyes focused on his face," stop," She took a breath, and made a face showing the pain it caused," not your fault, god answered me." In her eye, he would see she completely believed what she was about to say," you came, he answered me," she struggled to get the words out.
Dean watched this, not saying a word. This was bittersweet for him, since he felt he had failed in his own duties. Without thinking, he reached out and took Sarah's injured hand. Dean's eyes locked on Charlie's as he started to clean it to see the damage. He saw how much calmer she was with Charles and took the chance to see to her wounds while he held her. " she trusts you, hold her while I check her out."
Abby could hear some of what was happening back there, but she was focused on the road. She was trying to not get too wrapped up in her own throughts. She could and would drive herself crazy with all the what ifs and the possibilities if she allowed it.
She glanced over as she felt eyes on her.Max was staring at her. She swallowed , wondering what he was thinking. His blue eyes were so intense right at that moment it almost took her breath. Abby looked back at the road.
He started talking and she listened, not trusting herself to look at him without crying. She had cried far too much in the last few days and felt like that was all he saw her do anymore.
When he reached out and touched her, she let go of the wheel with one hand and gripped his with it." You will be fine, the Doc will fix it." She was trying to reassure him, feeling he was concerned about his injuries. She lifted his hand to her lips and kissed it." You don't get to do anything for a little while but rest," she glanced at him," not negotiable." She smiled at him and slowly let go of his hand and gripped the wheel.
"I would have come no matter what. Losing you would have ended me."
He gently moved a piece of hair out of her face, trying to avoid putting any pressure on any of the various bruises and swollen parts of her face. He didn't want to put her in any more pain then she already was. He looked at Dean and then down at Sarah. She seemed to be holding together and if they could get her checked out it would be great.
"Sarah, I'm going to hold you while Dean looks at your wounds. Your safe in my arms. If you get scared just let me know and we will stop."
He watched Dean start to check her out. He saw the tear roll down the man's face and he understood. He was surprised that this man was still doing things. If Sarah had been dead he would have broken. He didn't know about Audry. The man had said nothing of the woman. Well Charles knew that Audry had been with Payton but he just assumed that she was dead. Life had not been easy for the women in this camp.
"Thank you Dean. I know how hard you must be fighting right now."
He watched Sarah, making sure that she remained calm. The smallest sign of agitation would signal him to stop Dean. He wanted to kiss her forehead but he knew that he should be extremely cautious about intimacy.
Dean looked up from his work for a minute. He cleared his face of tears.
"Cherish this Charles. You'll hopefully never understand how I feel right now."
Sarah rested against him. The fell of his arms, his body against her . He was real. He was here. She felt someone holding her hand and stiffened a bit. Charles spoke as he stroked her hair. Charles spoke of Dean and she looked confused. She felt water in her hand, gentle rubbing and a sting. She snatched her hand back, reacting to the anticeptic. She never looked at Dean.
The sheer dress did little to hide the darkening marks on her abdomen from Darcy's kicks. They seemed to be all around her torso. Dried blood caked the back of her thighs in little ribbons.
It was all going in and out of focus. Fogging up and becoming clear. She was tired, exhausted. Perhaps it was a dream, a reprieve in this new hell she was facing. God showing her this face, this man to comfort her, give her strength. She took a shallow breath, anything deeper hurt to badly.
She heard a male voice and did not know it. She rubbed her head against that solod chest, letting it be real to her, even if it wasn't. Charles loved her, he had said it. She knew he loved her. Soft words whispered from her lips," he loves me,I love him too." Sarah grew quiet, her body and mind were slowly giving over to exhaustion.
Dean meant everything he said to Charles. He hoped he would never know how he felt. He had failed, bit if he helped Sarah, maybe..no nothing would make this better. Ease this pain. His eyes stared at her, and the state of her in the smalll time they had her made him sick. What hell had the girls gone through? He shoved that down and wouldt go there. He couldn't torture himself like that." She might have broken ribsand a concussion." He spoke softly. She needed a more thorough exam, that would need to be done at the farm. His eyes rested on the blood at her thighs and he felt a wave os sickness and hate flow through him." Shes been raped." He hated saying that but wanted Charlie to understand , even if it hurt.
Charles followed the medics examination and it led him to see her more fully. Until this moment he had been concerned only with making sure that she was going to survive but now that the immediate fear had been calmed he had to come to grips with what had happened to her at that camp. He looked at the bruises on her ribs and he felt like he could feel each and every one. Tears ran down his face now, completely uncontrolled.
He could tell that she was starting to slip into exhaustion and he looked to Dean. He mouthed the words "it's ok" Charles nodded and looked down at her again. When Dean had finished his check up Charles removed his jacket and placed it over her. He wanted her to be warm but more importantly he wanted to give her some of the privacy that had not been given to her. Her words replayed in his head. He loves me, I love him too. It was not exactly an I love you but he knew that is what it meant. Maybe not in the same way that he had said it but that didn't matter.
Dean's comment about her being raped almost snapped him. He looked at him with a hatred and rage that would doubtless scare the man. He fought the urge to simply reach out, grab the man by the throat, and slam his head into the window. Instead he kept his voice low.
"You don't think that I know that? I'm not fucking stupid."
Dean just stared at him. He could see the rage hidden behind Charles' eyes but he really didn't care. It didn't matter anymore. He just wanted to do what he could to help. He saw no other purpose for himself in that moment so if Charles decided to kill him he wouldn't mind. It would stop him from feeling this way.
"It needed to be spoken. So that you could know, really know. You will need to be there for her."
Charles knew that the man was right but it didn't help calm his rage much. His rage wasn't really directed at the man anyways. It was for the people at that camp that were all dead now, or dying. It didn't matter. No one in that camp would ever dare come against them now. They had driven into the camp and all but destroyed it. One day he would honestly go and burn the whole damn place to the ground. He would watch as it dwindled to nothing.

Max felt her lips on his hand. She thought he was concerned about his injuries, concerned about how fucked up he was. It was cute. If anything she was the one concerned. Max smile and continued to hold her hand. "You need two hands on the wheel," he asked squeezing her hand.
"You can't stop me. We both know I won't just rest," he said softly, "plush how am I supposed to rest when I lock us in our room an don't come out for two days." He laughed and grabbed his side. It caused extreme pain to laugh. But that's what Max does, he hides his pain with humour.
Still holding her hand he looked at the road. He didn't care what was going on behind him. He hadn't even looked or talked to Sarah since they rescued her. Max heard the Medic and Charles talk but their voices were drowned out by his thoughts. Drowned out by the road and by the pounding in his head.
He wouldn't let her let go of his hand. Fine. She glanced at him for a moment, eyes roaming his face. He was acting a little strange for him, and that concerned her. When they got back she was gonna make sure Brian checked him out. Abby knew Max was stubborn, but so was she.
Try and stop me! Oh! She shook her head, " I mean ot Max, you have to rest, to give something a chance to heal before you do some real permanent dammage." Sje glanced at him, eyes full of concern. " and as far as that, that's gonna wait." She smiled," I don't want you in pain." Abby could see the pain on his face.
At the rate the group was traveling, they would get back after dark. She knew the others would be waiting." There are enoigh people to do stuff now, you can rest for a few days." Her hand gripped the wheel," Please, do it for me, whatever Brian says, alright?" Another glance at him from the road, he looked like hell.

"Fine," max said letting go of her hand. He leaned against the window, turning away from her. He didn't want to be useless. As long as he could stand he would be helping. He would force the help if he had to.
Max let out a sigh. "Are we almost there," he asked, "I don't see the farm." Max tryed to cover his pain with a smile. He didn't look at her, just kept staring ahead. She was worried about him. He was worried about her. She had killed a man just yesterday, almost been rape. He glared but quickly shook it off. Sarah was worse off but he cared for abby more. He looked out this passenger. For a second he debated leaving. All the was fucked up, he was always better on his own.
Abby realized she had upset him, by the way he reacted. Damnit!! Why was he upset? She just cared about him. Probably more than she would admit. She just wanted to be there for him, to keep him safe , like he had said to her. Even from himself.
His injuries could leave permanent damage if he didn't take time to let them heal! God! Why was he so stubborn?
She followed the semi and just stared ahead. Silent. It was not long til the little convoy was pulling into the driveway of the farm, but it felt like years of silence to her.
