Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Edward was a lower-class citizen of Scotland but brought up with morals, he is all about family and friends and being as you would say 'neighborly,' he likes to give help when needed unless he is feeling threatened. From a very young age, he showed signs of being anti-social but tried his hardest when put in a social situation. He also suffered from anxiety and showed some signs of autism. At school he was an outcast and bullied by quite a few pupils physically, mentally and emotionally which inevitably ended in Edward blowing up and attacking a student, putting him in the hospital for 2 weeks. That being said Edward was never a violent man but he could have a nasty temper when pushed too far. That experience influenced Edward to take up archery, discovering he had a natural talent.
He hated the way he looked and was very depressed at a young age, he always wished he could be someone else. In the back of his mind, he always wished for an apocalypse as he had never liked a lot of people. The friends he did make were always mostly girls, he just found them easier to get along with. Not saying he didn't like a good chill with the guys.
In his teens, he partied every weekend and was always hitting up the hottest clubs. Despite the fact that he was a scruffy scumbag, he could scrub up well enough. At first glance, he could be quite deceiving. He had his share of fights on nights out and never backed down if a friend needed backing up, he's the type of guy that you know he always has your back even though he is a crazy ass motherfucker. He once got stabbed in the corner of his right eye with a shard of glass, he's lucky to have not lost an eye!
All his problems aside he always put in 100% to everything he did but because of where he came from it didn't amount to anything. He was a complicated guy, bright and outgoing but he often found that his brand of humor was an acquired taste. People either loved him or they hated him, a bit like marmite in that way.
When Edward met Zoe in one of the bars he would visit. They got to talking and that was that. She managed to break down his barriers and started to convince him that he was beautiful and he very quickly started to rely on her and life seemed to be going okay. They had been together for nearly a year before moving to America together.
He found peace in horses and archery, he also practiced both together. He avoided secondary school only going back for his exams. Not going to school he started going to the stable yard he volunteered at and got a job full-time until he started studying hairdressing in college and moved to part-time. He loved his work and by the time his efforts had raised a fair bit of money, he was surprised to find his Aunt had left him a rundown ranch out in Kentucky as well as a 'little bit of money' she had stashed away. Enough to renovate the rundown farmhouse and ranch.
This was Edwards idea of heaven, paradise. Funny thing life, it gives you what you want then next thing there's an apocalypse. The revamp of the farmhouse was hard, they spent hours down on there knees scrubbing and sanding and polishing floorboards, stripping, painting and wallpapering the walls, clearing all of crazy Aunt Heather's ' collectibles.' In a way it brought Zoe and Edward together on a whole different level, they were building their house together bit by bit, from sleeping on the cold wooden floorboards to sleeping in a double bed with the woman you love is unbeatable. As the house was developing so was their relationship, they found themselves talking about children but in the future, way in the future. Maybe it was the caring for the new animals Leeroy the collie, Jasper and Jace the studs and Breeze and Misty the mares along with the chickens, pigs, sheep, and cows. Whatever it was, it was becoming a model relationship.
The renovation of the barn and flat above had to be Edwards favorite part. Watching some old stalls in a dusty run down barn become something that he was proud to call his own, just thinking about it sent tingles through his body. The flat above the barn was somewhere Edward could go to be alone when he needed to be. They even had started a small vegetable and herb garden, that would go on to include, potatoes, carrots, swede, turnip, lettuce, broccoli, onions, tomatoes, cabbage etc
The actual move to America wasn't something he liked to discuss. He missed his family deeply and that was the only thing keeping him from fully committing to running the ranch. As for friends, nobody kept in touch apart from his immediate family members, he just didn't really have any friends, in the UK or in America.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
Edward was sat on the sofa with his girlfriend Zoe when the news hit. Edward had heard rumors of a virus going around that was caused by cows, eating beef and drinking cows milk. Edward figured that the news was a sign and decided to dumb his herd of around 43 in one of the fields further from the house. Edward and Zoe saddled up and drove the cattle through the field till they thought they were far enough away that if the virus came from cows they wouldn't be infected. Lucky they had paid that bit extra for those automatic water feeders and saved them the trip back and forth with water. It was a lovely winters day, you could hear the grass crunching under the horse's hooves and you could see even the slightest of breaths.
The ride back was romantic, Edward had even packed a picnic, no beef of course! They stopped in one of the fields and tied their horses to a tree, quick release knot is always the way! Edward laid out the green, red and white tartan picnic blanket trying to avoid the daisies. They both set out the food and continued to chat about when they first met, that was when he felt it was the right time to give her the engraved silver locket he had bought for her with a picture of him inside. ''This is so I'm always close to your heart, even when we are apart, oh fuck... Did you fart?'' In fits of laughter, he hands the locket to Zoe. That was just how he was, immature and making even the most romantic moment awkward.
After arriving back from the ride night had already started to fall, Edward just had time to nip into town for some essentials. Upon arriving in town, he gazed upon an old woman crying outside one of the shops. He approached calmly and asked what was wrong. Through the crying he barely made her out, "Someones stole my bag, it had all my money, everything inside.'' This didn't sit right with Edward so he took her to get her shopping and paid for it then gave her $50 and offered her a ride home. A lot of small talk happened on that journey, but all with gratitude. Edward waved her off and headed home, on arriving he found Zoe having a cig on the porch. She went on to joke ''Maybe this is the end of the world.'' Battered by Zoe's calmness or coping mechanism he wandered into the kitchen and put the groceries in the correct places before sitting down on the sofa once more for a chat with Zoe, about an hour later he slumbered into bed, tossing and turning in broken sleep with Zoe's words playing on his mind.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Edward spent the next few weeks from the initial outbreak report, scanning all news stations, trying to poke holes in the cow story but they were getting more reports of it spreading than actual reports on what was happening. Edward then being the good soul he is, started caring for an elderly neighbor Mrs.Birch. Doing her cleaning, shopping, cooking and just general household jobs. Taking the route back and forth on horseback. Something must have clicked in his head early on as he started also doing patrols of the grounds on horseback with the handmade brown Mongolian longbow he had over his back, with leather quiver and 12 purple arrows, just to be sure.
It must've been around February by the time Edward actually encountered his first walker, taking a good few shots at it before getting one straight to the temple. This triggered in Edwards' head that it must be damage to the brain that kills them. After retrieving the arrows he then burned the corpse, not knowing what else to do with it as he didn't want his land infected. After encountering his first walker he started with strenuous mounted archery training, he was already at an intermediate level before the apocalypse so it didn't take him long to start getting headshots, the first time.
As Mrs. Birches health deteriorated he decided to move her in with himself and Zoe, he didn't like the thought of her in that old farmhouse herself. About a month later Mrs.Birch passed in her sleep. Not knowing and going to check on her, he is then attacked when she turned while he was checking her pulse. He let out a manly yet high-pitched squeal and grabbed the closest thing, a table lamp, smashing it across her head. At this point, Zoe ran in and stabbed Mrs. Birch in the eye. This was the evidence Edward had needed in order to bring the cows back to the farm.
Previous events had Edward on full alert, starting to carry his quite distinctive TAC Force Assisted flick knife he used on the farm, on him at all times. He and Zoe rode out to where they had left the cows and found that a small portion of the fencing had been knocked over. They only saw one cow, Edward searched near-by and managed to find another two nearby but one had been bitten, he decided it was best to put it down there and then with a wound to the head, the cow let out a distressing sound as it bled out. Edward couldn't believe what he had to do, he had never killed an animal before if it needed put down it was taken to the vet.
They returned with the two dairy cows they had managed to find, now they had a source of milk, as well as fresh eggs from the chickens, pigs they could breed and eat and even some sheep. After settling the cows into the barn alongside the horses, they set to bury Mrs.Birch, they had a small personal service, just the two of them as she had no family. Edward was worried about Zoe as that was her first kill, he didn't know how this would sit with her.
April had already come round and there was still nothing new in the news, just that it had spread majorly, that was from the news stations you could actually find. Some must have been cut off Edward thought, maybe the dead that had risen and people who'd turned had maybe got to the news reporters. That was when he decided to start building a temporary fence by attaching wooden panels to the fence that already stood. They had some wooden panels already from the renovation of both barn and farmhouse so they got started with the construction.
When the panels started to run low they made a trip to town, the local D.I.Y store had been abandoned but Zoe managed to get them in the back door, by picking the lock. They gathered all the supplies they could, loading them into the back of Edwards truck. On arriving home they set to construction once again, knowing that it was going to take a while to have fencing around the large area they needed for the vegetable garden, animals and maybe one day expand.
May swung around and this was when the world started to die off, as in the power went down, all communications were cut off. They spent hours at an old radio waiting for an update, which was an announcement that the government was fallen and that the military had taken over the situation and that they should remain indoors. A couple of days later the power grid had been shut down. They then knew that it was the end of the world as they knew it. About two months had passed before they needed to go on their first run for supplies, scavenging in a general store Zoe got into a scuffle with two walkers and ended up pinned against a wall with the walker biting closer and closer to her face. When Edward glanced upon this he instinctively ran over and stabbed the walker in the head with his flick knife. Giving Zoe a quick peck once the walker had dropped before going back to what he was doing. They managed to get a healthy supply back to the ranch.
The next few months merged together. Going on runs, killing biters, still reinforcing the fencing. All the general stuff, it wasn't till winter they had to venture further than they had been before. Running into a trigger-happy survivor that was firing at Edward, he had already shot 2 shots before he had a clear shot that would've killed Joey, the madman shouting nonsense by this point was about to shoot when Zoe in retaliation without a second thought shot him in the chest. As she stepped over his fresh corpse she put the second bullet through his head. Edward and Zoe then taking out the walkers that the gunshots had attracted.
The next two years were spent reinforcing the rest of the fencing with wooden panels, developing and maintaining the ranch into a community. They even started bringing in other survivors, Edward had also refused a group of 3 sanctuary, as Zoe had witnessed them doing horrendous things which lead to an on the farm losing everyone leaving only Edward and Zoe once again. They had to repair the damage and bury those lost. Bringing more people in, unintentionally helped in the aid of defense when a small herd of walkers broke through the temporary fencing on the east side, this then influencing them to finally use stronger materials to reinforce the walls. In the second year, their numbers fluctuated, losing friend's and bringing new people in causing them to expand the house with a few rooms. The fencing being tested and repaired multiple times with any materials they could find. Around mid-2017 numbers had finally settled at 8 when they started to feel safe and starting to think they could maybe live there for the rest of their days.
A little too comfortable Edward had let his guard down, living the happy life, well as happy you could be at the end of the world. One particularly mist night Edward was on patrol with one of the people they had brought in when a few fencing panel had got trampled down by a large herd of walkers, flooding in Edward took off in a mad gallop back to the farmhouse. Edward and Freddie were screaming at the top of their lungs for everyone to get outta there, Zoe clearly didn't hear them, just standing there at first. Edward almost tearing his vocal cords repeated himself as the walkers started emerging from the treeline, Zoe must've heard that time as she sounded the alarm, meaning they should meet at the garage 3 miles from the farmhouse. Edward watching that Zoe gets out of there okay, then went and let the rest of the horses and other animals out, hoping at least some would manage to get away and survive. Not having any other option as all the cars and trucks had been taken he then jumped back onto the horse he had been patrolling on and tore off towards the exit.
As he approached the gates that were already open from everyone leaving, a smaller herd of around 5 staggered in through the exit. They swarmed the horse, one taking a bite of flesh from its neck, ripping off a good chunk with its teeth. Edward realized that the horse was never going to make it so instantly stood up and jumped overhead before the horse dropped to the ground. He grabbed his knife firmly and took out the walkers coming towards him, watching as the others feasted on his companion. This put Edward in a dark place, that was all too familiar to him. He hadn't felt like that since before meeting Zoe. In fact, he hadn't felt like that since snapping that day at school, Edward's world started to crumble, he just needed Zoe in that moment. As more walkers started showing up Edward took out the ones he could with his trusty knife, he got out of there as quick as he could have. He then went on to find a quiet area in the woods to bed down for the night.
Now with no transportation, he stumbled upon a truck, just like his own that Zoe had taken. The registration was different, he had got his hope up that it was her, stopped waiting for him. Impulse control went out the window and he proceeded to hotwire the truck, a neat skill he had picked up on over the years. Not knowing there had been a guy sleeping in the back of the truck. Edward took off in a hurry, driving like a lunatic, that must've woken Luke up. He emerged, crouching at first so Edward couldn't see him. He got a firm grip on his pistol, Edward swerving, and swaying, avoiding cars, debris, and walkers on the road ahead. Edward had spotted Luke in the back of the truck by this point, not being able to get a clear shot he just went for it. The bullet went soaring through the back window, causing it to shatter before going straight through Edwards right shoulder then ricocheted, causing the windscreen to shatter and it fell inward. Edward then slammed the breaks on sending Luke flying into the back of the truck. Knocked out Edward was stood over him, flick knife open and ready for the kill. Luke started pleading for his life and Edward couldn't for the life of him kill the guy. Luke had just shot him but in Edwards mind, it was fair game as he stole the truck. He liked to think he knew a bad guy when he met one. As a peace offering, Luke gave Edward 3 of the grenades he had come across during his travels. Edward told him to keep onto them for now, that he had nowhere to put them.
Edward proceeded on the journey to the garage with Luke to meet Zoe, on arrival to his surprise Zoe was nowhere to be seen. This figure then appeared before Edward with a knife in hand, ''Give me all your stuff and I won't cut you'' crackles from beneath the hood. It did cross Edwards mind that it could be Zoe, then noticed her locket he pulled the hood down, revealing a brunette around her 30's. Edward pressed her for information on where she got the locket only to get the response ''Off some dead biter.'' Edward then flew into a rage grabbing the woman by the neck about to snap it. He then decided that was too much of an easy death, reaching for his knife, hand slightly sweaty. Before he knew it he had slit her throat and was watching her die slowly in front of him. He took the locket and started mumbling to himself ''No, no, she cant be dead no.'' It was like he was on repeat or something. When the brunette had risen he then went at her again stabbing her multiple times in the head and face, bits of flesh flying around, an eye even got stuck on the knife but that didn't stop him. Luke dragged Edward from the corpse and went on to comfort him all night, holding him tight. Could Zoe really be dead? As for anyone else from the farm. He was alone, his only companion had shot him just a few hours before.
By the time winter had come around, Edward and Luke had grown close and things started to take off. He had made Edward feel safe again. It wasn't until January of 2018 that they actually slept together. Edward had always knew he was Bi and preferred guys with Zoe being one of the only exceptions. When they were making love in a house they had cleared out, it was ambushed by what only could be described as bandits. From downstairs, they had heard the door being rammed until it broke off from the frame. They threw on their clothes, but they were to late. They had reached the room they were in with them both being struck hard across their heads, both falling into the blackness of unconscious.
