(Lt. Heath) As she listened to Commander Smull talk about where this Napoleon fellow and his band of French-American bandits were located at, Lieutenant Heath nodded in silent agreement; in her mind, she would've done the same thing as well - called in an airstrike and glassed the location or locations in question; problem solved....
"If there is anything you would need or need to talk about, you can find me in the building or at the Medical Tent, and if there isn't anything else that is needing to be discussed right now, I think we need to get to work and start to set in motion the next turn of events for our enemies at the Western section of the area. Me and my men can take care of the dead.", Commander Smull said, concluding the meeting with another welcome to them, the conversation between them ending so that the three of them could get to work on the respective tasks in front of them.
While Commander Smull got to work preparing to send his people outside the wire and Lieutenant Lebedeva got to work on the airstrikes against Napoleon and Company, Lieutenant Heath got on the radio and recalled Klingenberg's section back to the airfield and calling her team leaders together; once her team leaders were gathered around her outside, she asked for updates on the situation around them and listened before speaking to them. "Okay, now momentarily we should have some airstrikes," pausing to open up her own map of the area and pointing out the locations to the east of them, "coming in to take out several threats to the airfield here. That will buy us time to start working on things here. Tomlinson, I want your engineers to get those barricades up as soon as possible; afterward, I need a couple of outposts set up along the corners of each runway; use whatever supplies you need here to build them. We can always expand them later on as time, material and personnel become available.
"Altidore, Howard, Klingenberg, I want the three of you to rotate your teams between the outposts as they come up and with assisting SFC Tomlinson and her band of engineers; don't be surprised to see me pull outpost duty so as to give your people relief every so often. Once we've got a basic defensive rig set up, we'll begin patrolling the area around the airport, expanding outward as time and space allows..."
"What about the MSR to Belle Isle?" S.Sgt. Howard asked; after a few moments, Heath replied, "I'll ask Commander Smull that here momentarily; for now, we'll leave the MSR in Belle Isle's hands - they know the ground better than we do at the moment, so they will handle route security until we have enough strength to do so ourselves," pausing as one of her controllers rushed over to the group. "Unless there's any other questions, everyone, let's get going, okay?" Heath said, turning to the airman. "Report?"
"We checked the communications and radar systems inside the control tower; both of them work, ma'am, but until we can get the radar system operational again here, we'll have to use the portable rig or scramble a Seahawk into the air, use their radars," the senior airman said. Musing her available options, Heath decided on a course of action. "Okay, start working on that radar assembly; once we have it up and running we'll notify Albany and begin running the airbridge. Beg, borrow and steal whatever you need but get that rig up and running, understood?"
As she thought about what needed to be done next, two things happened almost simultaneously: exiting the doors of the Medical bay were both Capt. Beloi and Col. McKenna, and her radio chirped; holding up a finger so that she could hear the radio transmission, she smiled and acknowledged with a reply. Setting the radio back in its belt loop, Elise smiled and said to both officers, "That was Ms. Sharpe; she's just arriving at the dock out back momentariliy. If you'll follow me," pointing towards the central hallway which connected the front entrance to the back entrance and the docks which fronted out onto the Detroit River.
As both her and Captain Beloi began to follow Elise out to the docks to meet Sarah Sharpe, Colonel McKenna said to her, "Right behind you," walking behind and taking the opportunity to gather her own thoughts as they headed out to the docks. Admittedly, diplomacy was not one of Anne McKenna's strong suits but she also knew that General McArthur would not have given her colonel's eagles (the rank insignia for a colonel) had she believed McKenna was not going to be up to the task at hand, remembering the documents she had in hand inside her ACU uniform blouse.
The two documents were an acknowledgment that Belle Isle (and the surrounding region of Detroit) would once more fall under United States sovereignty; effectively, Belle Isle would become the capital of a city-state, something never tried before in American history. The second document was the diplomatic part; it established that Belle Isle would have protecting power over any strongholds it was allied to...in other words, if any strongholds in the region were allied to Belle Isle but were not known to the Americans back at West Point, responsibility for their protection would fall primarily under Belle Isle's hat (in the same way, for instance, that Switzerland represented U.S. interests in Iran prior to 2013). The plan was to get the documents signed and back to Albany - and subsequently to West Point - as soon as possible but the reality at present was that American sovereignty was a fait accompli; the documents would merely seal it.
Once all of them were outside, Colonel McKenna looked over and asked Elise, "That's Ms. Sharpe over there, correct?" pointing towards the group arriving as they pulled up to the dock; after a moment, Elise said, "Sarah's the tall, broad-shouldered woman dressed in black; that's our leader, Colonel."
