Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Kyle was born as only son to Mary-Jane and David, a normal couple, not rich, not poor, but with a big heart. For them like for most parents, their Son was their everything. The final touch to their never ending love.
He grew up being a nice and kind kid, he had many friends and had good grades on school. That made his parents even more proud. But it all changed when he got to high school. He was such a nice and friendly kid, but for his classmates, it came off as nerdy, weird and a bunch of other stuff. They didn’t like Kyle and bullied him, but Kyle was a strong guy, so in the beginning he didn’t care. He couldn’t care less, he laughed it off and hoped they would change.
Months passed and he was being bullied every single day. Until one day they said something about his parents, it wasn’t the first time, but this time something snapped. He walked up to the guy and punched him in the face. He was called to the principle, but he was rude, his parents called and they took him home. They wanted to know what happened once they arrived home, but he yelled at them, told them he hated them.
From that day on Kyle wasn’t the same anymore. He was rude to anyone, fought with anyone who stood in his way. The only light in this darkness, was that he still had good grades. His parents were heartbroken, they tried so hard to get their boy back, but it didn’t happen. He even moved out and rented a room somewhere. In the blink of an eye he was gone. The school year passed and he graduated. But during all that time, he didn’t call or visit his parents. Even now with his good grades, he didn’t bother to share. The kids really messed him up, all the bullying made his heart stone cold.
Before he decided what he wanted to do, he went on a vacation. Beach, cocktails and pretty girls, was all he needed. But after two days, he got called 10 times, when he checked his phone he saw it was his father. But again he didn’t care, until he got a message, saying his mother was terribly ill and that she wouldn’t last long.
When Kyle read the message his world collapsed, he couldn’t stop crying. It was something he never did, in all those years not one tear, he bottled all of his feeling up. But reading this, realizing he hurt his parents so much and knowing he could never make that time up with his mother, it broke the seal on his heart. He hurried home and cried during the whole way back.
When he arrived at his old home, his father was waiting for him. Kyle his eyes were swollen and red, he expected his father to be angry, but instead he gave him a warm hug. He cried and cried while apologizing, but his father said it was ok, it was important that he was here now. Together they went to the hospital, on his way there, his father told him his mother had a brain tumor, one that couldn’t be removed.
Kyle felt so guilty, he was almost scared of showing his face to his mother. When he walked into the room, his mother smiled at him. His father told him, she hadn’t smiled in days. He rushed to her bed and hugged his mother. They talked for hours, Kyle tired to explain what happened to him, but all he could do was cry. But his mother also said he shouldn’t feel guilty, she forgave him and understood what he went through.
Kyle didn’t leave her bed, he stayed there day and night, together with his father. But only five days later, during a very big storm, his mother passed away. She said goodbye and handed over her silver cross necklace to him, saying if he wore this, she would always be with him. He and his father held her hands, as she her last breath left her body. They cried over her body for hours, until both of them headed home to get some sleep.
Together with his father Kyle took care of everything that was needed for a beautiful funeral. After she was buried, Kyle moved back into the house. There both him and his father mourned, days filled with crying, sleeping and trying to eat. That was by far the darkest period in Kyle his life. One month later, the pain was still there, but he deiced what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to become a doctor, safe lives, he never wanted to feel so powerless again, there wasn’t anything he could do to help his mother. Being a doctor wouldn’t have changed it, but still he wanted to do this.
But it was easier said than done. He went to college, to become a doctor. But even though he studied hard, his grades weren’t very well. He lasted 3 years of medical school, but then he had to give up. He had more than basic knowledge, but he wasn’t a doctor. Still his father was proud on him, since he knew how hard he worked for it. Kyle was a bit angry with himself that he couldn’t do it and sad too.
But then his father came up with the perfect plan. His father owned a pub/bar nearly in the harbor. So he asked Kyle if he wanted to come work in the pub. At first Kyle wasn’t up for the idea, but he realized his father probably asked, so they could spend more time together. He already missed out on all the time with his mother, so this was perfect.
So the next day Kyle joined him. He was clumsy and everything that could go wrong, went wrong. But his father didn’t mind, he had his son with him, Kyle didn’t mind it either, every beginning was hard. Time passed and one year later Kyle was even better than his father. He added cocktails on the card and upgraded the whole pub. There were much more costumers and he didn’t lose any of the old ones.
Life was good, but of course it didn’t last long. A couple weeks after Kyle turned 30 his father was the victim of a bank robbery. He was there to take care of some things for the bar, when two masked men with guns stormed in. They took him hostage and shot him before running off. David was brought to the hospital and Kyle arrived just in time to say goodbye.
Another dark period in his life happened and this time he had no one to share the grief with. He felt so alone, no other family, no girl, yes he slept with a couple and had one night stands, but nothing serious, he had no time for that. Luckily for him, the people from the pub, the customer that visited the pub daily, where there to support him. After the funeral he closed the pub for a couple weeks. He needed this time for himself, but being alone at the house didn’t help. Everything there reminded him of his father and mother. So he decided to sell the place and buy an apartment closer to the pub.
With the rest of the money, he redecorated the pub, new furniture, new paint, the whole package. And on one of the walls a hand painted picture of his mother and father, done by a local artist. Yes he needed to sell the house and redecorate the pub, but he didn’t want to forget them, he just couldn’t bare all the memories and he was sure his parents would have wanted it this way.
He reopened the pub and it was a big success. But when at the end of the day, he was still alone. But one day on his way to the pub, he ran into a man, who was walking his dog and two puppies. Kyle loved animals and petted them. But then as if this was meant to be, the man said that the black one was for sale. A black Labrador, Kyle and he came to an agreement and later that evening after closing the pub early, he went to pick up the little girl.
He already went shopping, some sort of dog bed, bowls for his water and food, toys, the whole package. Having Jolly, (that is what he named her) around, was all he needed. He even allowed her to sleep with him in bed.
Now the emptiness in his heart was partly filled, at least he didn’t feel so alone.
But one year later, months after turning 31, life as he knew it, would be gone….
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
Kyle and Jolly were in the pub as usual, yes his dog was with him everywhere he went. They heard the news, on the television, they explained how there were dead guys walking, something about a virus, raising dead people, with as only weak spot a brain.
Kyle and the crew (the regular customers) all laughed with it, until shit really hit the fan. Streets filled with fire, people getting killed, dead walking. They stayed for months in the club, there was enough food and drinks and they gave shelter to people arriving with the boat. Kyle always kept spare clothing in the pub, so that wasn’t a problem either, he also had a large supply of dog food, which kept sweet Jolly alive.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Of course they couldn’t stay at the pub. Soon the harbor would be overrun and they would be trapped. So one day when a guy arrived with a large ship, the whole crew, including Kyle and Jolly decided to load things on the boat and live a life on the sea.
He had to admit the guy was a little weird, but at least he had a working ship. The negative side, he was a little crazy and dressed like a pirate. He even talked like one. Months passed and life went pretty good, half of the crew of the pub, was now starting to act like pirates and where used to being on the sea.
Kyle already talked a bit in the sea language, but kept his clothes the way they were. Other than that he and Jolly adapted just fine. Every now and then they sailed to a harbor, scavenged shops and that’s how they kept themselves alive. For Jolly it wasn’t a problem at all, people never seem to take dog food from the stores. But that wasn’t all what happened during those months.
Kyle was taught how to fight, by the pirate and the other people he sailed with. See the pirate guy had a crew of his own, all pirate people. The let him pick two ranged weapons and two melee ones. Kyle didn’t want to learn it, weapons was a bridge too far, but on the other hand, he had to be able to defend himself. Back at the pub, his crew took care of that, but now he needed to be able to do it himself.
He picked a pistol and some sort of old shotgun as his ranged weapons and dual swords and one long swords as melee. The Captain(pirate) liked his choices and wanted to teach Kyle himself. Another couple months passed and life still seemed pretty ok. Kyle was getting the hang of using his weapons, both melee and ranged and it was all good.
They survived like this for about two years. Kyle was now 33, nearly 34, they still lived on the ship and Jolly was still a strong, sweet dog. He still didn’t dress like a pirate, but his accent was a different story. During all that time, they lost some friends and the pirate lost some crew members too, but they were still pretty steady at surviving in this sick world. They had food enough, water and so on. Kyle had become some sort of expert at using weapons and combined it with taking care of the sick, since he did study to become a doctor.
But one day during that same year, a bad storm hit them. Kyle had a phobia of storms and took shelter in his cabin. But the ship was hit by lightning and set on fire. Kyle thought he was done for, he was able to make it to the deck and he saw the huge fire, people screaming, his friends screaming, it was horrible. The pirate yelled to abandon ship, so he took his dog and jumped off the ship. The captain (pirate) threw some crates off the ship and yelled they had to use it, to float on the water.
But the storm caused the water to go wild, wave after wave, drove everyone apart. Kyle was able to grab hold of a crate with one arm, while using his other to help Jolly. He didn’t think he would get through the night, he watched the ship sink, heard all the people yell as he was carried away by waves of water. He fought hard to stay awake, but the water was cold, he used all of his energy to keep Jolly close to him, but after some time he blacked out.
When he opened his eyes he was on the beach, with Jolly licking his face. He looked up at the sky and cheered, he was happy he made it out alive. But sad he lost all of his friends. He knew his mother and father were watching over him and he was sure they helped him get to safety, one way or another. He was also sure all the people he lost during that storm, where in a better place now. The beach was filled with stuff that was on the ship, crates, even some food. But he couldn’t believe his eyes, when he saw his chest with his weapons. Every night before going to bed he put his weapons in the chest and locked it. He lost the key, so found something to back the chest open. He took out his stuff, some clothing, first aid kit, meds and his weapons. Then he searched for something to put everything in. He found a leather bag, put his clothes in, the shotgun, his meds and the first aid kit. Then he connected the holster of his pistol and the scabbard of his sword to his belt, and the scabbard of his dual swords on his back. All his spare clothing was in the chest and was a bit wet too, so changing wasn’t an option, the sun would be perfect to dry it. He took one last look at the sea, kissed his silver cross necklace and then turned around and walked away.
After leaving the beach back then, the first thing he did was search for food and water, both for him and jolly. He found that at a store, of course he couldn’t carry a lot. But enough to keep them going. That’s how he survived for months back then. Until one day he ran into raiders, just a handful, he killed all of them, and drove off with their jeep. Now being able to make some sort of stock.
Now 2 years later, Kyle having the age of 35, he is an even stronger man then he was back then. With Jolly still at his side. The jeep filled with enough food, water, dog food and gas. Some store’s even granted him extra clothing, ammo and extra med’s. He had to admit it wasn’t easy finding all that, but for all the bad luck he had, he was happy with some good luck for once. Al he needs now is a decent place to stay, since he doesn’t want to be on the road anymore. Traveling from state to state, crossing city’s, it brought him to Rhode Island, again close to the sea, would this be the place to find a new home?
