Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Life was good, for a time. Not great, but good. Frank was living in Vail, Colorado, working as a guide in nature and in health for the yuppies and trust babies that frequented the small mountain town while putting himself through EMT training and volunteering in the dispatch office. He taught yoga and tai chi on the side, which actually brought him some peace, and he loved boba tea, his cat Waffles, and brunch.
He lived with his cousin Kili, the only member of the family, other than his younger siblings, who hadn't completely disowned him after he came out after high school graduation. They'd moved to Vail together from the ridiculously conservative Colorado Springs and had both gotten jobs with one of the town's tourist agencies. He'd met Garrison, the dreamy ski instructor, fell in love, made some friends, and seemed to be doing ok.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
Nothing. At least, nothing Frank was aware of. He was on the third day of a week-long backpacking trip with a gaggle of aging, balding mid-lifers, his only real company being Kili and their fellow guide Matt, whom Frank affectionately dubbed "Pal".
The businessmen cum explorers mostly kept to their various cliques, occasionally hitting on Kili or even one of the boys in one of their drunken fireside respites; they obviously had come out here for the tail, not the trail.
When the group finally made their way back toward town, Matt was the first to pick up some garbled static over his radio. Every attempt they made to contact the trailhead was met with the same empty air. Even the emergency channel was offline. And, ahead, smoke and sirens drifted high above the town of Vail.
A small crowd approached from down the hill, but they moved in a slow, mindless shamble that brought to mind only one impossible thought.
"What are those, zombies?" joked one of the pudgy old men behind him, grabbing Frank's shoulder to steady himself on the rocky hill.
"Yeah, right..." Frank laughed, uneasily, but something churned in his stomach as the two groups slowly grew closer...
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Frank, Kili, Matt and two men from their original party of twenty survived that first encounter with the undead. They found some other survivors, but it was clear that the town was overrun. The older men left in search of their wives, but Frank and his friends stuck together to get home.
But this homecoming was anything but warm. They found Garrison's body outside their apartment - his head split open and his body nothing but gored leftovers. Had he come for Frank? For Waffles? Or to hide? Frank was immediately sick, and had to be dragged by his friends from the building.
It was a hellish descent from the mountain. Every stop was a death sentence. The long line of highway traffic may as well have been served to the Zombie horde with wine and dinner mints. Frank and the others quickly learned to steer clear of the road, to use their training to crawl their way down to civilization.
But only more death and chaos met them at the bottom. Every major city must be like this. Denver was on fire and Colorado Springs fared no better. Frank found his parents, mutilated in their beds, and all but one of his brothers the same, or shot dead in the yard, by who? Looters? Victims? Had they been turned? Kili's family met the same grisly end, and Matt had to assume the worst for his own, out east in Ohio.
With nothing else keeping them in Colorado, the trio set out east, gathering what supplies they could, across the wide, blissfully empty fields of Nebraska. It was there, somewhere no one would ever find them, that they instead found something odd. Children. Some young, most in their teens, one or two in their mid-twenties like Frank and the others, and one woman leading them, comforting them, protecting them.
Delilah was the mother Frank had always wanted. She accepted all three of them immediately and in open arms. She was beautiful and loving and entrancing and supreme. They were safe, at long last. Mother would keep them safe for over two years, and in turn Frank, Kili and Matt rose in the Family. They will kill for their Brothers and Sisters, and die for their Mother. Frank is often called Uncle by the younger ones, and shines in even Mother's thick shadow. Where they move next, he knows not, but home is where the heart is, and his lies with Delilah.
