Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Jen was born to middle-class parents in Long Island, New York. Her father was an office worker for a small company, and although her mother was initially a cosmetologist, she ultimately became a stay-at-home mother after an accident. Initially, the family didn't struggle financially, but shortly after the birth of Jen's younger brother, Adam, her mother was in a terrible car accident that rendered her paraplegic. Jen spent most of her life caring for her mother and her brother, though her mother was able to move around in a wheelchair and helped out as much as she could. Unable to play outside much with her mother's condition, Jen often stayed inside and played with hair and make up with her mother, and they discovered that she had an affinity for it. When she graduated high school, she opted to attend cosmetology school instead of a university, and she went on to become a hair stylist when she was twenty. She started out in a small salon, working her way up in the business and honing her skills, when one day a polished woman came into the salon. The seasoned workers seemed a little nervous to work on her hair, and when Jen stepped up to the plate, unknowing, all she was told was to make sure that she did an incredible job and not mess anything up. Oblivious, Jen went about her business and styled the woman's hair. She was grateful and was impressed with her job, and it was shortly thereafter that a man came to pick her up. He was decked out in gold and was built like a brick house, a dark-skinned Italian man in his late twenties. She found out after the pair left together that the woman was mother to the young man who came to pick her up, one Nick Morrietti. Jen learned, in hushed whispers and gossip around the shop after the pair left, that the Morrietti family operated from within the Italian Mafia out of New York, a smaller family within the Gambino clan.
Jen was originally scared to continue to do Mrs. Morrietti's hair, but over time, she became more comfortable with her and struck up a rapport. Nick would always come into the shop to receive her when her appointment was done, and over time, Nick took an interest in Jen and started to try and pursue her. Initially, she was scared of what it meant to be involved with someone from the Mafia lifestyle, but she eventually relented and let him take her out. At first, she was kept way out of arm's length of anything involving the Mafia, and she liked it that way. Nick helped to provide a better life for her family, and he began to pay for her mother's care and her brother's schooling. He promised to keep Jen far away from the lifestyle and not bring work home with him. She felt safe and provided for, and so when he asked to marry her after a few years, she agreed without hesitation.
But being an out-of-sight Mob Wife was not in the cards for Jen. After she worked out of someone else's salon and the stress of it began to wear on her, Nick bought her her own salon to run and gave her free reign. Jen couldn't have been happier, and she hired her friends to work alongside her. But it was only coming up roses for so long. After running the salon solo, backed by Nick's support, for a little while, Nick dropped the bomb that he needed to start laundering money through the salon. Jen was upset and didn't want to be involved, and reminded Nick that she could go to prison for washing money for the mob. But he assured her that that wasn't going to happen, and that even if it did, someone else would take the fall and she could walk away. Jen didn't want trouble to befall any of her friends, but while Nick was gentle about it at first, he inevitably let it be known that this wasn't something that she had a choice in. He told her that if she didn't launder his money, he would divorce her and blacklist her from any salon in the country. He would stop paying for her mother's medical bills and her brother's college. He reminded her how good he was to her financially, and expected that to cover the gaps of emotional inconsideration.
And so she began to launder money through her salon, begrudgingly, and the stress of it took a toll on Nick and Jen's marriage.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
Outbreak Day started like any other for Jen: being waist-deep in clients and having her husband blowing up her phone to make a money run. She set all of the clients up with her friends and ran across town to get some money, but she couldn't help but notice that there was something strange going on. Those spooky news reports were getting most vast, and the radio was breaking up on her way over to the building. It was a gun shop, and Jen was made to wait upstairs while they handled "business" down in the basement. They locked the door to keep any customers out, and Jen leaned in annoyance against the case while she waited for them to be done. She was frightened by the tortured screams of whoever was downstairs, but felt relieved when it finally ended. With whoever they were handling downstairs dead, they returned to give her the cash, but they were disrupted by the sound of someone struggling downstairs. Jen waited while they investigated, but it sounded like they were saying that the person strapped to the chair should be dead, and that they didn't know how he was moving. She crept down the first two steps and peeked to see what was taking so long, and sure enough, the man that was strapped to the chair seemed rabid and was trying to bite people. Frightened, Jen took the money and left as quickly as possible.
She returned to her shop and tried to call Nick, but the lines were jammed. After an hour, he barged into the shop and kicked everyone out, including her friends. He started talking to her about how people that were dead were coming back to life and eating each other, and she could only stare at him in shock and confusion. But they didn't have a long time to talk. A riot started outside of the shop and it blocked the Morriettis into the salon. Nick locked the doors and pulled down the metal partition, refusing to let anyone inside with them.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
After being stuck inside of the salon for the night, Nick and Jen managed to make it back to her old apartment building. Her father and mother were in a panic, and Jen pleaded with Nick to help them. It was difficult to make their way through the rioting crowds with her mother in a wheelchair, and when the wheel hit a curb as they were rushing through the dead and living alike, she went flying from the chair and skidded along the pavement. It didn't take long for the dead to be on her, and her father lost his life trying to save her. Jen tried to help them, but Nick grabbed her and forced her away. Early on, they found safety in numbers within the Mob, and there was no shortage of everything that they needed to survive. Jen asked to go to California to search for her brother, and Nick promised her that once they had enough resources for the long journey, they would go.
But that promise would go unfulfilled for years. For three years, Jen lived alongside her husband and the remaining members of the Mob, even as those numbers dwindled over time due to bandits, walkers, illness, and internal strife. The longer that time went on, the more bitter that Jen got over worrying for her brother, and Nick's empty promises. Survival wasn't as difficult as it could have been because of all of their resources, but Jen didn't know what she was even surviving for. She helped out as she could, but mostly kept to herself and Nick, even though their marriage had crumbled long before. It was all day to day, one thing after the other on a stagnant repeat, until they were attacked by a rival group. The dwindling Mafia members were picked off by the overwhelming amount of bandits, and what they couldn't finish, the walkers could. While all of the havoc was being wreaked on the compound, Jen managed to sneak away and packed one of the working cars with as many weapons and supplies as it could carry. In the struggle between the rival gangs and being overrun, she tried to find Nick, but it was to no avail. Without any time to waste, she got in the car and sped away from the compound. In the side mirror, she finally saw Nick. He took a bullet to the shoulder and fell out of sight, and it didn't take long for the dead to come running.
Finally, after a tough year of travelling alone, she has reached California. She believes that Nick is dead, and even if he isn't, he's dead to her after all of the years of empty promises. She knows where Adam went to school and where he lived, and she intends to check both of those places as soon as she is able. But with a large working vehicle and a massive amount of supplies, she knows that doing it alone puts a target on her back. However, even if she finds a group, she doesn't know if she will trust them. Time will tell.
