Ivan had grown fond of Vanessa over the months. He couldn't remember what year it was and the only reason he knew the remote month they were in was because of the weather. Right now, it was hot so it had to be summer. They somehow managed to make it to his penthouse on Monroe Street, which, at the time was luxury for a bargain. He got it at a cool $2.5 million during construction, only to learn three years later, because of the real estate boom, it was worth an estimated $5 million. But he held on to the place. He liked it here. He liked being on top, the building, the people in it and most of all impressing anyone that came over for business or pleasure. He wasn't into real estate flipping like some of his business associates. He was a bit more attached to his suite. The views were perfect, the furnishings luxurious and his life was pretty good.
But it was all different now. He looked out from the balcony, hoping to catch some sort of breeze off Lake Michigan from the oppressive summer heat as the sun rose. There was no escaping the sun from his vista palace and before the a/c would take care of everything. Now, they just had to hunker in the dark in hopes they could keep cool. The winter was no different, except they opened all the blinds in hopes of finding warmth from the sun during the even more oppressive winters.
He allowed Vanessa the luxury of sleeping in whenever she wanted as long as she held up her end of work. Foraging and scavenging was how they held up and he had a knack for fending off the undesirable. Walkers were getting easier and easier to kill, although the large hordes were still something to run from and being in the big city, sometimes those came around. They were getting more and more scarce and he figured out a way to keep them out of the building. They tied up some walkers downstairs, in the lobby. They took off the arms and shattered the bottom jaws. There were a smattering of those that still remained in the building..a few original residents and some newcomers that took up living in the upper floors. All-in-all, they seemed to get along, but he wanted to make sure he was the one on top, always.
His fondness for Vanessa had grown over the months as well. He tried not to make it seem too obvious, keeping a cool distance, but there were those days where he would watch her from the corner of his eye. Sometimes it was watching her change as he hovered in the shadows outside her bedroom door and sometimes it was just watching her survive doing daily chores. She had to have known at some point that he was watching her and he suspected at some point, when she was ready, she may reciprocate. He could wait. That's all they had now, was time.
But today they were low on food and water. It would be a trip out to Lake Michigan to get water to boil and hopefully get some fish and raid a camp or two. He was tired of living this way though. He was tired of scavenging and hoping they had enough to live the next day. There were even some days he contemplated using the gun on them both and just ending this now but whenever he thought of that, her angelic voice would ring out, asking a question or keeping him in check about what supplies were needed.
He kept the double sliding glass doors open as the breeze finally wafted through, penetrating the living room as he stood in nothing but a pair of slacks that were now baggier from weight loss. The sun was warm against his chest and the humidity high, moisturizing his skin as the breeze cooled him down. He closed his eyes and let his hands rest against the rails thinking that he would practically kill for a cold glass of orange juice and a freshly buttered croissant right now.
