Raphael laughed as he watched his line cast out on the water. He had never spent a day fishing in his life, but he was willing to learn. If it meant catching dinner he would damn sure try it. Raphael looked back over his shoulder to see what Tina was doing. They had been at the place few a few weeks now. The first night was pretty rocky. It ended with Tina crying herself to sleep and Raphael staying up all night listening to the ambient sounds of living in the wilderness. His mind was a blur of worry and stress that night, but the tension had faded over time.
Raphael: I think I got something already!
He joked. Clearly he was pretending. Raphael was not a very convincing actor and Tina could always tell when he was lying. He pretended like he was reeling in Moby Dick himself. He furiously pretended to try and pull in the catch of the century. He wanted her to wander a little close so he could surprise her with a kiss. He in good spirits honestly. The place had lots to keep them busy. There were canoes to go out on the water. He had found these old fishing poles and tons of left behind camping gear. Hell he even managed to find some abandoned boom box and some spare batteries. In the background Avril Levine was still screaming about Raphael's choice in women. Let her scream. He thought. I know I have a good one.
The smile warmed his face as he continued his ploy.
Raphael: Mami come here I need your help! If we land this baby we could be eating for a month!
Raphael was having a good time for the first time in a long time. It wasn't just surviving out here. It was finding yourself. It was reconnecting with what mattered in your life. The quite and the isolation gave him a chance to reconnect with Tina a bit. The strain of just struggling to make it had pretty much worn on them both. They had both had their nerves tattered to shreds. But not today. Raphael didn't even mind that he was completely out of cigarettes.
He ran out on his first night here. After Tina had cried herself to sleep that first night he went out on the balcony. He sat in a little chair on the observation deck and just stared out over the vast space before him and smoked until his pack was empty.
Raphael knew things were not perfect, but they were better than they had been in awhile. The thought of dead children no longer a crushing weight against his throat he simply enjoyed the time that he had with Tina and that was all he really wanted in the end anyways. Just the two of them. Raphael continued to mock struggle. He was just hoping she would fall for it long to catch her and smother her with affection.
