Eric gripped the wheel as he drove down the highway. They had just passed the sign. Welcome to California. He recognized the golden bear statues. It marked the signal of the state, as the crossed the small bridge into the forested areas he slowed the car. They'd been driving for hours now. Left early morning, now it was early the next day. Two moths, that's how long it took them.
Two months, that's how long it took to get to California. Realistically it was a day's drive, they could make it in a day with non stop driving. But Eric knew it wasn't going to be an easy trip. So they took their time. They went slow. They gathered supplies and gathered all they could, Pugh gas for the trip, plus some to spare. It took lots of siphoning, Eric didn't think he'd ever get the taste of gas out of his mouth.
Yet here they were. In the golden state. Pulling the small two door car to the side he put it in park and leaned back. It was chilly out, no doubt it would heat up though. Luckily they trees provided shade, and it was quiet. There were birds, that was a good sign. They didn't burn down, didn't die. He looked over at Riley beside him in the car. She was asleep, quiet, peaceful. He gripped the wheel, wondering if he should wake her, tell her they were here, they made it.
He decided agaisnt it. Opens the car door he stepped out, moving to the side of the ditch. It wasn't quite light yet, but he needed to stop. Climbing back up from the ditch he moved around to the trunk of the car and opened it, pulling out his pack. They still didn't have a place to go, but at least they were safe. Nothing happened along the way.
Though Eric was tired. He rubbed his eyes. It had been a long day. Non-stop driving. Riley offered to take over, but Eric initiated he was fine. Now he was feeling the effect of not being able to sleep. He leaned agasint the car, gong through his all tomgrab the trailmix they put together. Taking out the small plastic bag he put the pack away and closed the trunk.
The sun was starting to come up, it was quiet, peaceful. It felt like a fresh start. The dew in the grass, the golden sun over the trees. It was going to be a beautiful day, that was for sure. Though they still needed a plan. They needed a place to go. He wanted to avoid the major cities, avoid towns and large population. He thought maybe some of the camp areas. Look them over, see if the could find anything.
He took a moment to take it in. They could slow down now. They had time. They made it, they were here.
