Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
- Tory lived an almost perfect life before the Apocalypse. She was an only-child born to a middle-class family, got straight A's, played volleyball and basketball, and participated in an overabundance of extracurricular activities. Tory was very popular at her tiny school; her cheery persona helped her make friends easily. At home, she enjoyed the company of both her parents and occasionally went shopping with her mom when she wasn't out with friends. Her father enjoyed taking her hunting and fishing, even if Tory was always a girly girl who shied away from bloody parts.
Perhaps, had Tory known about what was to come, she would have spent less time in the mall, and more preparing for Outbreak Day in the woods.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
News was normally slow to reach Tory's hometown, but the news of Outbreak Day arrived with fair warning. At first, like most Americans, Tory and her family thought the reports were pranks...some prodigal computer wiz cracked NBC's code and was trying to be funny. However, it became painfully real that this was the real deal when the TV went dark and even Minnesota Public Radio began broadcasting stories of the walking dead; flesh eating humanoids terrorizing people in the masses.
O-Day: Not wanting to waste anymore time, Tory's family loaded all they could on a trailer and pickup and joined their neighbors in what was becoming a mass exodus of Americans across the Canadian border. It took most of the morning for the Bournell's to finish packing, but it shouldn't have taken more than a two hours drive to reach the Maple Leaf.
O-Day+1: A day and only twenty miles later, the Bournell's turned around and decided they'd have to find another safe route to their destination- Tory's Uncle had a secluded Cabin in Northern Maine in a well-protected spot. He had already began taking in refugees, including a National Guard Unit, and his property sounded like the perfect place to survive. Choosing the next closest access to Canada as their path, the Bournell's drove through Wisconsin and began to make their way up Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
O-Day +2-14: Michigan was hard. Dead bodies and burnt towns provided evidence of the atrocities of man. Cars were left in the highway; survivors painted a picture of Civil War. The Bournell's and those who chose to follow them eventually made it to the Canadian Border; though, their greatest fears were made real. The bridge over the Great Lakes was blown, Tanks laid smoldering. There was so much death and destruction it was impossible to decipher what had happened. Tory's parents did their best to shield her from these sights on their migration, and she only saw bits and pieces.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
- There was no getting across the lakes, the convoy did the only thing they could do and turned around heading back for the Minnesota-Canadian border. The trip was surprisingly easy and the views only got better. Things took a turn for the worst again in Ontario, the group saw their first walkers. They went into panic at first, and then into survival mode. Ammunition and weapons were hoarded, everyone trained how to shoot, and the vehicles were constantly inspected. Nothing was going to stop the little convoy.
It took almost a year to reach Quebec because of the back routes the group chose; it took almost a year for the group to have their first real disaster. They had finally ran out of luck. Just North of Ottawa Tory's father received a message on the radio he was using to contact his brother. "Do not come." The dead had breached the walls. Maine wasn't safe.
The convoy, now objective-less, rode south to escape the Winter and with a little difficulty made it to New York before an even bigger tragedy struck. A vehicle broke down, and the stopped line of cars was unexpectedly overwhelmed by a herd of walkers cloaked in the tree line. The survivors were shocked; there was too many. The crack of rifles quickly became the drowning moan of animated corpses. Tory was handed her bag and instructed to run. It was the last time she'd ever see her parents again.
Sheltered and kept in the back, Tory never felt the full shock and awe of the Apocalypse. She was told to look away when things got too bad; there was always someone around to provide comfort. Now alone, afraid, and lost in the Empire State she has experienced all at once how devastating the end of the world truly can be.
