Rosecrans Air Base, Army Tactical Airlift Command, St. Joseph, Missouri
Although the airport was technically in the state of Missouri, decades before the outbreak the Missouri River shifted its course, creating a small peninsula accessible by land only from the Kansas side of the border.
The airport was humming with industrial activity. Two rain and wind damaged cargo planes sat on the runway, but the surrounding land was being used to graze cattle. Around the peninsula were tall chainlink fences topped with concertina wire, as much keeping the walkers that crawled from the river out as keeping the enslaved labor in.
After a week of torture by men in US Army uniforms, Franklin was assigned to a slave garbage recycling crew. Franklin included, there were 10 prisoners sifting through the bodies of dead walkers dumped out of dumptruck onto the tarmac.
Since his capture, Franklin had learned that the facilities here at Rosecrans were a satellite outpost to an even larger, more extensive community at Fort Leavenworth. This facility enslaved people to farm crops, tend livestock, and had an improvised metal works, scrapping items and molding them into bullets or swords.
"You assholes get to be Goop Crew today," the soldier barked at Franklin and the other slaves. "Sweep these corpses with the metal detector. If you get a hit, crack open its skull and dig the bullet out. Yes Mary with your bare hands. Put the metal in the buckets, take the bodies to the kiln to be burned. Hurry up there's two more dump trucks coming. The General appreciates your contribution to the war effort."
Franklin and the other slaves continued to work on the piles of the fetid dead, scanning their bodies with a metal detector and extracting whatever bullets, pocket change, and jewelry could be recovered. Each slave was assigned their own collection pail, and at the end of the day, each slave's findings were weighed. The slave that recovered the least metal was severely beaten, encouraging the slaves to work faster and more thoroughly.
After a week of this hard labor, sunrise to sunset, Franklin determined that he would collect the most metal, even if he had to steal it from the other slaves' buckets when they weren't looking. The guards seemed to encourage this behavior...

Crayton and his newfound companion Jennifer "Jenny" was also amongst the slaves that had been brought to work for these gooks, Crayton didn't know how, but he would eventually escape, after losing everything he didn't really care, he didn't even get along with Jenny at first, but after a month of traveling and working together he couldn't help but fold under her personality, yes they needed to escape, but he also knew he needed to wait, wait and watch
He searched one of the rotters pockets and found a couple bullets, he looked to the guards who had they're backs turned before putting them in his pocket, he then picked up the body and moved it to the furnace, he was walking back ready to check the next body when he noticed someone take a handful out of Jenny's bucket, Crayton grabbed the mans hand and squeezed till he dropped what he had taken, he caught the attention of he guards and when crayton looked at them he noticed one of them had a faint smile on his face
He then let his eyes search the room looking at the various prisoners, he noticed it was 10 against 4, even with those guns they still had a chance but no, they still let them heard them around like cattle, Crayton would be the one to start the uprising if it weren't for Jennifer, he looked after her like she's his daughter, she was to small and weak to defend her self but was useful for getting out of hairy situations, he exchanged glances with a man in his mid or late 20s maybe early 30s, he could see it in his face that he was thinking the same thing crayton was, he was thinking about an escape...
That's when the guard hit the back of his knee with the but of his gun causing crayton to fall to his knees by the dead rotters, "get back to work!" The guard said, crayton gritted his teeth as he grabbed the metal detector and got back to work

The work on the putrid corpses caused many prisoners to vomit when their rotting skulls were cracked open. But, as Franklin observed over the course of his enslavement, those on the Goop Crew that showed weakness and vomited were often abused even more by the soldiers. It was if the soldiers were weeding out those that couldn't handle being around the stench and rot.
It was lunchtime, and the soldiers led the slaves to an area to wash their hands and faces with a well spigot. They announced that those who had vomited were "food wasters" and would not be eating lunch today. These were led back outside to continue to work on the corpses.
As a lunch of some kind of bean soup was served, Franklin sat next to the two new slaves (Crayton and Jenny) and introduced himself. "I'm Franklin. Sorry I got you in trouble. If you wind up with the least metal at the end of the day, they beat the shit out of you. Worse than what they do to the pukers. How long have you been here? Where were you captured? If we stick together maybe we can guarantee someone else gets a beating. I've taken too many."

Crayton wasn't sure what to think about franklin, he looked up at jenn and they exchanged glances before he returned to his tray eating the oatmeal that was cooked to long and was slimy and gross, he didn't care though as he was to hungry, he wasn't going to answer the man at first but when he finished his tray he realized it couldn't hurt having someone on your side, "they picked us up while we were walking" he didn't tell him about Tyrone and the others, he but maybe he saw them since he's been here longer
"My friends were taken, we came here to try to break them out but we couldn't even find them, Tyrone, kaylee and Freddy"
"They're testing us," Franklin said plainly, not looking up from his bean mush. "I heard some of the soldiers talking about their days on the Goop Crew, when they were slaves. This place is an outpost of a larger base in Leavenworth. They talk like they control everything from here to Lawrence. I guess this is their gang initiation. Some gung-ho military general runs the whole thing. We've been drafted into his army..."
Post by Crayton Luther on Dec 16, 2016 16:00:53 GMT -5
none of it made any sense to crayton "so your saying my friends either joined them Or died?" but he knew they knew better then to give in, they must have known he was coming for them, either way it didn't make any difference "Maybe your right, but don't you think there's something... I don't know, off about this place?" He asked, this place gave crayton an uneasy feeling from this place, like it was keeping secrets from him, mocking him, insulting him...
Crayton started to hear the whispers again, he knew it was all in his head but his blood still boiled, his face got red and he stared down at his plate trying to hide his anger, this place, it wasn't anything like sand point, it was disgusting, mischievous, he couldn't take it no more, he had to release his anger on someone before he blacks out again,he interrupted franklin as he stood up and looked to the man on his left and dumped his food all over him before throwing him on the ground, before the man could get up Crayton kicked the mans left side causing him to fall
Crayton then climbed on top of him and unleashed his full force unleashing punch after punch relentlessly,
"Off? Yeah. They say they are enforcing martial law and curfew orders issued by the President over 3 years ago. They worship this General like he's goddamn Hitler. Call him the hero of the 'Battle of Kansas City' or some shit. They're fairly sadistic and..."
Just then, Crayton leapt up and began pummelling another slave, beating his face into a gory mess.
The armed guards held the other slaves back and let the two continue fighting but crayton beat the other man into unconscious as they laughed and seemed to place bets on the outcome. "Hey look this guy wants to be a squad leader!"
Franklin watched in horror as Crayton beat the other slave nearly to death before the guards pulled him off.
"So you want to fight, huh? Let's see if the Sarge thinks you're Army Strong."

Jenny sat next to franklin as she watched, he had told her about his anger problem but she didn't expect it to be this bad, the poor guy didn't deserve that, the whispers hadn't completely gone, they were faint and dull, he couldn't handle the isolation, being enclosed in this cement box then he blacked out...
He shook the two gaurds off him and when one wouldn't let go he turned and punched him in the face causeing him to fall to the ground, he then started stomping on the mans head, he came to to the sounds of the poor guy gurgling, choking on his own blood, Crayton looked at his bloody hands in horror, he did it again, he didn't feel sorry for the man, he was scared of what they would do to him, he turned around to face the gaurds only to be met by the but of their gun to his face causing him to fall back on his ass, he still hadn't been knocked unconscious however and they were about to charge when he raised his hand in an attempt to stop them
The guards held Crayton at gunpoint as they checked the slave and the soldier he attacked, then dragged their bodies off to the side.
Minutes later a long-haired man in camouflage and sergeant stripes arrived.
"Two crushed larynxes. They ain't gonna make it. You like to fight, huh?" the sargeant said. The sergeant turned to his men and said "Tie his arms behind his back. Let's see how much ass he can kick tonight when those two people he killed turn."
Yelling at the slaves, the sergeant bellowed "Back to work, maggots. Tonight's entertainment is Asskicker vs. Two Numbskulls"
Outside, the soldiers started setting up a makeshift arena.
Post by Crayton Luther on Dec 16, 2016 21:35:23 GMT -5
Crayton stayed sitting on the floor, his arms folded over his knees and his head in his arms, the observers that surrounded the fight had dispersed and were all outside ready for the show, Jenny had gotten up from the table and walked around it to where Crayton was and knelt down beside him and wrapped her small arms around him in an attempt to comfort him but it didn't seem to make a difference, once the gaurds had finished setting up the arena and returned Crayton stood up and put his hands behind his back ready for what's to come, once they had slapped the handcuffs on him they led him outside, he exchanged glances with franklin as they pushed him out into the arena...
(Can you describe the arena? Like what it's made out of, how it keeps the walkers and fighters inside, was thinking it would be a pit but I wasn't sure)

Outside the mess tent and in the middle of the airstrip tarmac the soldiers parked six 53' flatbed trailer trucks in a wide circle around various crates and dumpsters to block escape from beneath the trailers. Various folding chairs and lightstands were being set up on the flatbeds.
Franklin spotted a Stryker APC flying a two star flag -- the General had come to watch the event.
A soldier stuck a cigarette in Crayton's mouth and lit it. "Relax, psycho. You're not even the main event. Impress the shit out of the General and he might move you to Leavenworth. That's how we all did it."
The Goop Crew was cleaning up, and Franklin dumped some metal scrap into Jenny's bucket, hopefully enough to spare her a beating when the buckets were weighed.
(Hold for General Comstock's post)

Crayton walked past Franklin and exchanged glances then The guard next to the door opened it and held it open as the guard behind crayton put his lefthand on craytons shoulder, his right still holding his AR15, once they had cleared the door, the guard followed them letting the weight of door close it, crayton looked around to see the flat bed trucks and the various soldiers sitting on the boxes and on the bed of the semi's waiting for they're daily dose of entertainment, the guard that had held the door open walked around and put a cig in his mouth as he apc pulled in closing the gap between the trucks, the guard spoke as he lit craytons cig, he wondered what Leavenworth is, if it's Any better then this shithole, he already had a plan to take out the walkers, take their legs out, then smash their heads in, he then heard the squealing that came from the bolts of the hatch that had flung open...

General Comstock arrived with as much ceremony as could be mustered by the ragtag garrison of soldiers and recruits here at Rosecrans. He stood on the back of a flatbed trailer in full military dress uniform holding a bullhorn as soldiers continued to wire up lights to illuminate the arena space in the center. The other flatbed trailers began to fill with nearly two hundred cheering soldiers packing in to find a place to sit or stand. The slaves at Rosecrans were gathered into the center of the arena to hear Comstock address them.
"At ease. Be seated." Comstock barked into the bullhorn. "It's not often I come out to Rosecrans so I wanted to thank you all for your hard work and dedication to the war effort. Every bean you plant, every corn you husk, every bullet you mold helps up to keep fighting. Each and every one of you is essential to our continued expansion and security. I am pleased to report to you that our operations to the west have been successful. We now control 10 square blocks of Lawrence, Kansas. In the spring, we will garrison more troops there, building an even more secure Leavenworth Safe Zone. Even now, no hordes of the infected enter Leavenworth County without us having advanced notice of it and a rapid response to put them down. We Are The Law!"
The soldiers cheer wildly, chanting "We Are The Law! We Are The Law!"
Comstock waves the crowd to silence before continuing. "Now, winter is setting in. The roads will be iced over. Food rations will be shorter. But the infected will freeze, move slower, become more brittle. Now is not the time to slack off and sit on our laurels. When the spring comes, the snows and rivers up north will thaw, and the Missouri River will bring us thousands of new infected to fight. And we will hunt them down, and we will defeat them! We must maintain our order. WE ARE THE LAW!"
"WE ARE THE LAW! WE ARE THE LAW!" the soldiers chanted.

Crayton overheard some guards talking to the long-haired sergeant.
"Do we have enough numbskulls for the demonstrations?"
"Just older ones. Fall apart too fast, can barely move, Sarge."
"Not good enough. Check the quota lists. Turn the twenty laziest workers into fresh biters. Do it quietly."

Crayton kept his head down as he listened to the speech, he thought about Sarah, and his old motorcycle gang, he missed his life, it was peaceful, once the general had ok'd it the soldiers let the biters loose and crayton waited for them to approach and when they had gotten to close he kicked its knees causing him to fall, the other one stumbled over the corpse and crayton took advantage by shoulder charging it cause of it to fall back, he then stomped on its head but it still tried to get up, he did it again and again till it stoped moving, then the other grabbed his leg but he kicked it over and over again knocking it's teeth out before stomping on its head
He looked up to where the general was standing, he didn't even break a sweat, he had faced worse conditions before being from michigan and living in the U,P for a while
The soldiers cleared the slaves out of the arena space and led them back to their tent city before the games began. Franklin and a few other slaves were pulled from the group and led to watch the events after being told their performance on the Goop Crew had earned them "recruit status."
Franklin and Jenny watched as Crayton made short work of the two fresh walkers with his hands cuffed behind his back. Then there were other performances. A squad of soldiers formed a phalanx with spears and shields as a dumptruck load of walkers were dumped on top of them, many of them fresh as Franklin recognized a few of the walkers as fellow slaves from the Goop Crew. After around 20 minutes of intense fighting, the squad stood victorious over a pile of destroyed walkers. They began chanting "WE ARE THE LAW! WE ARE THE LAW!"
Crayton was uncuffed and placed with Franklin and Jenny and a few other slaves. The long-haired sergeant bellowed at them "Congratulations, maggots. You've been chosen for Basic Training."

(ooc: Leavenworth stronghold setting will launch in January)
Quinn had never been able to settle down anywhere for very long. It just wasn’t in her nature. Her husband’s return had been horrible, she had known the man but a day but had married him on a whim before she disappeared the following day…Who would have thought she might encounter him again after the world went to hell? He had lost his mind and Quinn felt the full force of the broken man’s mind. However Lawrence had saved her. Lawrence whom she soon fell for and accidentally became pregnant. She miscarried. With the proverbial chain broken she once again ran. This time with a friend she had made, another misfit who just didn’t fit in.
Quinn and Dana had intended on resurrecting the bar they found. Make it an oasis of sorts. But things simply hadn’t worked out, and the two had went their separate ways…Both searching for something though they knew not what. It was a cruel twist of fate for the woman who suffered from a permanent case of wanderlust to end up captured and forced into a strange type of servitude. Quinn was the rebellious type and biting her tongue had never been her strong suit. However it took only a powerful backhand that knocked her off her feet to drive the point home….if she was going to escape she would need to be smart about it.
She felt sick when the words ‘goop crew’ passed todays resident ‘I’m going to yell at everyone because I have one tiny shred of power’ man’s lips. She bit down on her lip and quickly forced her hair into a loose yet effective knot that would hopefully keep her long golden waves from dipping into walker blood. When the metal detector would beep she would inwardly groan before diving into the cold rotting body with her slender fingers. But after the first five or so corpses it became a mechanical action. Hear a beep, find the bullet. Her pale green eyes flicked up when their lunch was announced. She sat alone and quickly ate the unappetizing food she was given, better to get it down than to really taste it.
However things took an unexpected turn after that. They were moved to watch some sort of a spectacle. There was chanting and seemingly important people milling about. Quinn was smart enough to keep her head down. Her large eyes studying her surroundings with a detached analytical eye. However when the cuffs were removed from her wrists she rubbed where the skin felt chaffed. Her eyes flicking over to the people that stood with her…and apparently they were recruits or some nonsense from the way yet another man strutting about was spouting off.
Quinn had been silent. Did her job. But there was only so long she could bite her tongue. No one had mentioned any sort of training to her…and a congratulations to someone who had recently been elbow deep in walker innards seemed mocking. “Basic training for what?” She ask loud enough to be heard, her voice cold as she dared to catch the man’s gaze.
You’d think a girl would learn after life whipped her so many times, don’t poke the lion. Not Quinn, never Quinn.
((Sorry to barge in, I can delete this no problem if needed ))
((No need to delete - but this group will be more active in January with the launch of the Leavenworth Safe Zone stronghold in January... with maps, etc.)
Franklin had noticed the feisty blonde before during his weeks on the Goop Crew. She hadn't gotten lippy with the guards much since they smacked her around but she didn't break. She kept to herself, and it wasn't like there was much opportunity to socialize with the other slaves under constant guard. Franklin cringed as he heard her spout off to the long-haired sergeant. The sergeant had once had Franklin beaten for refusing to thank him after a beating. He was a real sadistic prick.
But the beating didn't come. The guards seemed a bit more civil whenever General Comstock came to Rosecrans, as if the dirty work resumed whenever he wasn't around.
The sergeant said, "Army Basic Training, princess. Physical conditioning, vehicle and weapons training, night insertion training. Then you're off to Infantry school, recruit. You finally get to Be All You Can Be, or die tryin'" The sergeant chuckled.

Clayton stood up straight and watched the long gray haired man talk to the lady, his rage blinded him, he couldn't see what was going on, he was confused until he got it out, all in the mans, the guards and the walkers now mashed faces, they were recruiting, for the army, a militia, or just another settlement, either way Clayton knew he would work his way to the top... easy, for now he just had to sit back and wait, he didn't care much for what the man had to say, he just wanted to know if they would let him drink, "so are you's gonna let us drink while we can?" He asked in a stern serious voice, all he wanted was to get drunk and pass out, then a stogey to wake up to
The long haired sergeant replied, "You all will be taken to Leavenworth in the morning. You will be fingerprinted and medically examined. Yes, we can run your prints and find out if you were a shitbag in your former life. Then you'll meet your drill instructor and I highly recommend you don't piss him off."
Franklin wondered if they really could run his prints. They would identify him as a federal wildlife agent...
