Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
- While too young to remember most of what happened, Flora’s parents died in a car accident of which she was the sole survivor. She had immense curiosity for her new family’s farm, and learned how to cultivate crops, manage animals, and even use firearms. She was very close with her older step-sister, who would often show her the ropes when she had difficulty. She was homeschooled and received no formal education during her life.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
-The family farm was so remote that the first day passed uneventfully, although all contact with the outside world was shut down and her step father stormed into the nearby town to demand a refund for the dysfunctional television and was never seen again. Her step mother, concerned, went into the town three hours later, and came back soon after in horror with a wounded arm. While not totally new to the idea of being frightened on the farm, it concerned her how terrified her typically in-control step-mother was, and her sister shared her concerns. The wounded matriarch told them to hole up and get the guns out. Flora was the proud owner of a compact gun she got for her 10th birthday, and was all too happy to stare out the open window with it loaded and ready. She eventually fell asleep until the following day, when awoken by her sister who yelled about soldiers being outside who had shot their mother who’d allegedly gone ‘insane’.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
- A small cadre of troops evacuated the area around her farm, and she and her sister were transported onto a large seafaring vessel, formerly a cruise ship, with enough supplies to last over 200 people for a year,(although the number on board was fewer than 100 due to severe casualties) and was also equipped with plenty of fishing equipment and water distilling gear. She lived here for a long time, exercising and training with other younglings on board. They were taught that they were the future of mankind, and that the world they knew was gone. This mindset, while misleading, allowed Flora to properly equip herself mentally and physically for what was to come. The plan of the soldiers was to retrain a group of survivors and, after a long period of time, when the food stocks dwindled, to slowly clear out every last walker on the continent and rebuild society. It was without a doubt a ridiculous plan, but one which Flora and her sibling were irreversibly enrolled in. The first year, perishable foods were given out freely. However, when they were down to the stuff without an expiration date, there was very strict handling of it. Morale plunged on board, and a thief was shot and thrown overboard. The second year was far more of a struggle, but Flora was happy to learn, even as every passenger thinned out. The third year was when it all went down, and Flora really matured. The navigator had an argument, and was murdered by a furious individual who was sick of the way things were done there. He was in turn shot as well. The two dead reanimated and attacked the ship, which was on a unchangeable crash course into the ground of New Jersey. The only safe location was the main deck, which was soon overrun by half the roamers, one of which had slammed onto the horn, causing an immense noise which cause every walker nearby to swarm the beaches as the ship crashed. Some of the remaining military personnel were able to clear a path; she and a handful of others were able to run through. She remembers their words to this day; to never stop running, and never look back. She was the only one to follow their orders, and the only one of the first wave to make it out. After a safe distance, she turned, and saw the wreckage of the life she’d lived for so long, and a second small stream of people running from the large army of undead. She swears one of them must have been her step sister; she believes it firmly. Flora was never able to reunite with the others; after seeing a moving, half-devoured corpse of someone she knew personally, she never wanted to go near the horde, even if it meant she could see her friends and family. She eventually wound up in Pennsylvania after much walking about. While in Pennsylvania, she found a saddled horse which she named Steadfast. Flora came to understand that this horse was very quiet and stoic, and that is how it had been so effective at survival. She adopted a similar policy, and has been with this companion ever since, wandering the Pennsylvanian countryside aimlessly, debating on whether or not the fabled streets of New York are safe, or a southern trip into more familiar territory is more feasible.
