Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
- Having grown up just outside of Toronto, Canada’s largest city, Harriet had what might be considered a typical suburban life. She felt nurtured by her loving parents, and got on well with her older brother. In school she was fairly popular and active with her group of friends and other social activities. She played on the high school soccer team and liked being outdoors going hiking and camping on occasion. She had something of a rebellious streak, going out late, getting into trouble, but nothing too serious beyond what might be expected of a typical teenager with a little too much time on her hands.
Mom was a doctor, always working and never home. Dad was around more, taking her and Jean out on family activities. They'd go shopping, swimming, to the movies, or even to hockey games. And having Jean for an older brother, pulling her hair or twisting her arm to do things he wanted to do, tagging along with him and his friends, all contributed to her turning into a tomboy. Mom was always pushing Harriet to be more ladylike, to wear make-up and dresses, and to use a purse, but she preferred playing video games and skateboarding to any of that.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
- They had been vacationing in the Florida Keys when the outbreak hit. As soon as Father saw the news reports he packed them all up and headed for home. They didn't reach Miami. The highway came to a standstill, and they were trapped with thousands of people when the first wave of undead came upon them all trapped in their cars. They saw movement up ahead, heard the screams, saw people running, and then witnessed the bloody massacre as it drew nearer. Like everyone else they abandoned their car and possessions to run for their lives. Keeping with a group of people they made it into the wildlife reserves West of the city. They spent the night camping in the woods, but sleep was cut short by the sounds of screams when the undead fell upon them. Harriet, her brother, and her father stuck together and ran for their lives. They didn't know if anyone else survived that first night of terror, but at least they were alive and together for the time being.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
- It took a week to reach West Palm Beach. Harriet and her family had almost died several times already. They risked their lives every day trying desperately to find food and water. The undead came upon them over and over. As often as they'd found helpful travelers they found thieves and treacherous cowards who'd set them back to having nothing or nearly get them killed drawing the attention of the undead.
Orlando was where their hope of ever reaching home died. It took over a month to reach the city. They were with a large group who planned to see what they could find or find out in the city. None of them came back. The small group remaining grew smaller when they split up. The Martels went North towards Atlanta. Even though they'd lost hope, something kept them turning in home's direction. They had learned a little about the undead now and were more careful, staying away from population centers where hordes of undead were likely to be. They used distractions to lure walkers away so they could loot for food and supplies. Other survivors were becoming scarcer sights and bandits were increasingly the real threat.

By the time they reached Orlando Harriet and her family met some other travelers to head further North with, but by Jacksonville most of them were already dead. In the early days people didn't know much about what was happening. Most people just wanted to get away from the chaos and death, but it soon became apparent to all that every direction only lead to more of the same. Travelling from place to place, they gradually worked their way through Georgia and South Carolina, but the further they went the fewer helpful travelers they met. More and more people were just afraid, looking out for themselves, and willing to do anything to survive. They tried to make friends and help strangers for a long time. Even after a few hold-ups and backstabbing betrayals Father refused to give up hoping in finding goodness in other people.
In North Carolina they found a community of people living together, helping each other survive. They were a small group, but they were loyal. They took Harriet's family in and helped them survive. For a time they stayed and helped out, but eventually they felt ready to move on. With supplies and a couple good friends they headed North again. Virginia was where they saw the darkest side of humanity thus far. They'd seen roaming bandits before. They'd fought with rival groups of survivors before. But in Virginia a group of murderers slaughtered them just for the sport of it. They made them beg for their lives while they laughed. It was a hell on Earth. Harriet, Jean, and Raymond watched their friends get tortured and slaughtered in front of them one by one. When they realised Raymond was their father they took extra long dismembering him in front of them and forcing them to watch. While they were still deciding what to do with the siblings a group lead by a former military officer came by and eliminated the murderers. They took Jean with them because he was strong enough to fight, but they left Harriet behind. She was just another mouth to feed for them.
On her own Harriet drew close to starvation, scavenging what little she could find. She met another group of survivors who helped her, and when she was ready she set out to find her brother. With their help she was able to pick up his trail, but it was nearly a year later that the two siblings were finally reunited in Atlanta. Jean had made the most of his time with the soldiers, but when he caught wind of his sister he made his escape and found her. Reunited they once more headed North towards Canada. They headed up through Tennessee and Kentucky staying away from towns and cities, and keeping wary of other survivors.
