Joey had to run. Surprisingly no one outside Yankee tried to stop her…though they all seemed rather distracted by something or someone else. She ran despite the pounding headache that each footfall seemed to punctuate. She ran despite the dizzy feeling that made the world spin every so often. She ran until her chest felt like it would explode and Nasrim was making unhappy chirps as she clung to her pack. Eventually she had to stop. Her chest was rising and falling rapidly and a sheen of sweat covered her slender body. Her long blonde tresses clung to her neck and were a tangled mess beneath her eagles talons….But at least she was free.
She gulped in a breath and looked up at the steadily darkening sky. Her blue eyes blinking against the fading blue light as she contemplated where she might spend the night. She didn’t know this area….so any place she picked would be a shot in the dark…This was exactly why she had wanted to get out of that stadium faster……She should have never offered to help them….never spoken with them and looked at all they had to offer….never kissed Marcus on a stupid whim. The thought made her eyes drift shut for a moment. Remembering the way his lips had begun to move against her own as he gave in to her touch. And then she had shoved him on his ass for both of their sakes….
She didn’t imagine she would see him again….but he did intrigue her. He was kind beyond reason. Foolish as could be. One could even say an idiot in some respects….. But maybe that was the cynic in her that had been changed since the outbreak….And maybe his stupid actions were simply because he had clung on to his humanity while she had thrown her’s away like an old pair of boots. When her eyes opened again there was a walker a mere three feet from her. Without breaking her stride she move towards it and thrust her knife into its head between its eyes and yanked her knife free. She was wiping the old blood on the leg of her jeans when a sudden wave of dizziness caused her to stumble against the brick wall of the apartment building to her right. A loud ringing in her ears made her cringe and one of her hands gingerly touched her skull. She would have sworn she felt it pulsating.
She cursed under her breath and looked around for a quick, easy, and remotely safe place to spend the night. Her blue eyes eventually drifting up to the emergency type stairs attached to the outer wall of the apartment. She had to jump…which felt just wonderful. But eventually she was able to grab the lowest rung and pull the ladder down. She climbed up and pulled the ladder up to where it had been before she moved on upwards. Stopping when she was about three floors up. The window that led onto the stairs was unlocked and Joey slipped inside. A quick check of the small apartment revealed nothing but dust and spiders.
She sighed and sat her backpack with Nasrim down in the bedroom before she closed the door and took the eagle’s cap off her head. She ruffled her feathers and shook herself. Obviously unhappy about having worn her cap for so long. “Sorry girl…..” Joey said softly to her and let her thin fingers slide over her head and down her neck. When the bird seemed content and was hopping around the room exploring Joey lay back on the bed. It was hard not to sneeze from the dust…but at least she wasn’t being forced to stay here…. Her mind wandered over the events of the day as she stared up at the darkening ceiling. It had been an emotionally and physically grueling day. Seeing children thriving had been wonderful. Feeling betrayed had hurt…way more than she should have let it. Her head was still hurting like a mother fucker….but all in all….she didn’t regret it.
