The flames in the fireplace had died to nothing but a few flickers that wrapped around the ends of the now dried logs where the small group slept. The sun had already started to pierce through the windows and they had survived the night. The cabin was dusted in snow and the ache from the piles on the porch could be heard as the wood popped and cracked above. The forest around them was a winter wonderland and their cars out front would need to have the windshields scraped.
As Dannie's eyes opened she started to push away the ache in her body from sleeping curled up all night but at least the blankets were warm. It was hard to move but she heard another pop upstairs and saw some of the snow starting to filter down in clumps down the side of the house.
"Guys, wake up. I think something's wrong. Get up, get up."
She looked to the window and saw a few more clumps fall as another crack could be heard from upstairs. If her instincts were talking correctly to her, she knew the weight of the snow on the roof was too much for the cabin. Without anyone to clear the snow or leaves off the roof, this place was too fragile to handle winter. It was possible the roof was too old and wet to take in the amount of snow.

Jake tried to stay awake as long as he could to keep the fire going, but after some time he had to give in to his sleep. The combination, of having a soft mattress, pillow, blankets and the warmth of the fire made sure he would fall asleep. Even though it would be a short night, every little bit of sleep was welcome. He was still sleeping as he suddenly woke up from Dannie, she yelled something was wrong.
Jake opened his eyes, threw the blankets of him and got up, he fell asleep in his clothes he was wearing so there was no need to get dressed. “What’s up?” he asked a bit startled.
Years of catching sleep in the station while waiting for a break in a case had taught Sterling to be able to wake up quickly. He was cold, but his system ramped itself into high action when he heard Dannie say that something was wrong. He looked around, trying to find the threat and then he heard it. A crack coming from upstairs.
"Well f**ck we got to get the hell out of here. Anyone who needs a ride is welcome to ride shotgun with me. I've got the back filled with blankets and supplies."
He sat up and set into motion nudging the others and grabbing his own stuff. They may not have much time and after surviving the walking dead he didn't want his time to end to a collapsing building.
One of the camp settlers had seen an unknown guy lurking around, who had taken off when he was discovered. Unfortunately the camp settler hadn't reported this to Ellen until late that night. Although the cover of night had given Ellen and her father an opportunity to scout ahead and take the sparkplugs from the intruders' cars. Recent developments in the camp had caused enough reason to belief that these people in the abandoned cabin were a search party for some of her dad's people.
Ellen layed down 600 yards away in hiding with a Remington MSR bolt action sniper rifle observing the situation in front of the cabin while her father would make contact with the people inside. Her sister layed by her side with her Vector SMG, making sure they wouldn't get flanked by either a walker or someone else. Charlie had taken the rest of the QRF-team to cover the back of the cabin, in case they decided to try and escape that way.
"Ellen, Charlie. We're in position." Charlie said over the comms. "Roger that." Ellen responded. "Dad, go ahead."
A great responsibility layed on Ellen's shoulders. She was by far the best shot in the camp, second to her dad. And he had insisted on being the one to make contact with the intruders, leaving Ellen to cover him with the sniper rifle.
Ellen watched as her dad drove his armored 2008 Chevrolet Suburban to the cabin and got out of it. Seeing as the car was bulletproof, her dad could use the car as cover. The car was parked in such a way that Ellen had full sight of front of the cabin.
She sure hoped she didn't have to kill anyone today.
When Ellen gave the go ahead, Mac drove his car and parked it in such a way that Ellen's view would not be blocked. The plan was solid, and unless the people inside were dumbasses, no one was going to get hurt.
Mac honked the horn of his car, announcing his presence. He kept standing close by the car so that he could go into cover if it he needed to.
"Whoever's in that cabin, come out!" Mac shouted, waiting for whoever would come out that door. If it turned out to be gunfire, this wasn't going to be pretty.
Dannie grabbed her boots as quickly as she could, shoving them on her feet while calling out.
"Come on Emre! This roof is about to collapse!" There was no time to think about their next plan of action. They had to get out of the house before it toppled on top of them. It could be in minutes, it could be in hours, but she knew what that creaking and cracking was all about. She had seen many roofs collapse from too much snow back in Chicago. Hell, she had to put up the crime tape at some to keep people back while firefighters worked to rescue people. Sometimes rescuers were too late.
She grabbed her jacket and all went out the front as Logan was calling for them to come out. No time for hands up here as they raced out the front to the sound of snapping wooden beams and cracking glass. It wasn't bad, but it was about to get worse.
"Get back!"
She, along with the others ran to the end of the driveway where Logan parked his car and blocked them all in before she realized there was a stranger in their mix honking his horn at them. Driven by instinct, she drew her own department issued revolver and pointed it at the man. It was her usual speech that was given to any and all strangers. She hoped the guys had her back on this one too.
"Hands up! Drop your weapons if you have any! Say your name and where you came from!"
The people came storming outside and Ellen felt a cold shiver go through her. She felt her heart beat in her throat. She normally didn't get so nervous but now her dad's life was on the line. When the pale skinned black-haired woman pulled a gun on her dad she knew she couldn't pull the trigger. Her dad had told her such a thing was going to happen and that she shouldn't shoot unless he gave the command.
Her dad subtly gestured the 'number one' with his indexfinger. Ellen knew what to do. She activated the laser dot on the sniper rifle and aimed at the woman's chest. Her dad was wearing a bulletproof vest but Ellen kept her finger on the trigger and watched the woman's movements. She so much as moved the wrong way and she'd pull the trigger.
Mac had gestured Ellen to take aim at the woman and from the red dot on the woman's chest he could see that his daughter had done like they agreed. This was exactly what he expected to happen. The woman aimed the gun at him, which he expected to happen as well. She was full of questions, but those could be answered later.
"I will tell you my name in due time." Mac answered. "As for the weapons, I must insist that you and your people drop yours if you don't want anyone to get hurt. Look at your chest."
Mac indicated that the woman really needed to look at the red dot on her chest. Ellen had taken aim at her, and it would be in her best interest if she dropped her weapon.

Everything happened so fast. Jake saw how the cabin was nearly going to collapse. So he grabbed both the holster with gun and holster with his blade and rushed outside with Dannie. While doing that he swung the holster with his blade on his back. On the way out he heard a horn of a car, there was no time to worry or even an option to stay inside so Jake followed Dannie out. Once outside he took his time to put the holster with the gun around his waist.
But just then he was startled as he saw a stranger in his car. He was about to yell back at the man but Dannie beat him to it. Jake also noticed how she pointed her gun at the stranger and Jake also drew his gun. They where a group now so they had to take care of each other.
Just then the man spoke up and insisted them to lay down their weapons, just as Jake was about to disagree with him the man told Dannie to look at her chest, it was then that Jake noticed the red dot. Inside he just felt anger, he hated people that lured them into traps, at least this felt like a trap. “Dammit.” Jake said softly as he slowly started to lower his gun.
Why the hell had he left his sniper in the squad car. He ran out and instantly his weapon was up. There was no way that he was going to let this happen again.
"Wow now, I'm detective Sterling Daur chicago PD. What the hell is the problem here."
His blood was pumping and there was no way in hell that he was just going to surrender, not without a fight.
"These are good people and we're not just going to turn over our weapons. Who the hell do you think you are anyways?"
He stood his ground and quickly looked over to Dannie. What the hell was going on? They were simply trying to live and these damned people were treating them like they were criminals.
Emre woke up startled, something was going on. Dannie had woken them all up for some reason although Emre didn't question it, it was most likely bad. He slowly got up from his matress placed by the fire that he had slept on, eventually being rushed by Dannie. He got on his feet and heard voices from outside, it could be an attack. He rushed to where the others were with his handgun prepared.
He went outside of the cabin to see many others telling them to surrender their weapons, hell, if it didn't mean death Emre was game. He saw the laser pointed directly at Dannie's chest and knew that they had to place down their weapons. Emre bent down slightly and dropped the weapon on the floor.
"Fuckin' bandits"

Dannie looked down to see the beam of light on her chest.
"God Dammit."
The others drew their weapons too, but this man was the intruder, not them. Sterling tried to take control of the situation, but she had a feeling whoever these people were, they didn't care one way or another if they were cops or not.
"I don't think they give a shit, Sterling."
She kept her weapon in her hand and raised the gun into the air away from the man with her hands up. She was almost surrendering, but not quite. It was not her place to surrender.
"We were here first. We have no intention of killing anyone unless we're fired upon first. So tell us who you are and where you came from."
This standoff was going to end peacefully. That's what she was taught during her SWAT training. First absolute was to end it peacefully and make sure everyone with weapons drawn kept a finger on the trigger, but never fired a bullet unless fired upon. Of course, if Logan could actually see the cabin, he would have heard and seen that part of the roof caved in. He would also see that two of the cars parked in front of him were marked Chicago PD on the side. To serve and Protect.
"We are just looking for supplies, that's all. We heard there's some settlement up the road if you're looking to rob someone. I'm sure they have more then we do."

Jake heard how Sterling tried his best to convince the intruders and put them in their place. Jake thought Sterling was right, who where they to ask them to surrender. So he still kept his gun down, but he wasn’t planning on throwing it on the floor.
Shortly after that he heard how Emre joined them, but it was a big surprise for Jake that Emre just surrendered and placed his gun on the floor. But then again Jake, maybe he was scared of dying and that was the reason. Jake shook his head and turned his attention back on the situation.
Jake then listened on how Dannie handled the situation, she gave some good reasons to them to leave, but would they? All Jake could do was wait and be ready if they decided to attack anyway. Sweat ran down his face as he waited and watched the man in front of them.
The pale skinned woman seemed to be a leader of sorts. And were they really cops or just people who happened to find a few squad cars? For the moment it didn't matter. What mattered is that they knew about the settlement, but somehow still hadn't put two and two together that they weren't there to rob them, and were actually a part of the settlement they were looking for.
"If we wanted to rob you we would've done so when you arrived last night." Mac answered the woman. "My name is Mac; and I'm here on behalf of the settlement you're trying to find. One of the settlers saw the Arabian guy from your group so we came looking for you. We're not here to rob or kill you. We did take the sparkplugs from your cars during the night to make sure you wouldn't be able to leave until we've had a chance to talk with you."
Mac gestured the number two with his fingers. It was the sign for Ellen to contact Charlie's squad and to tell them to hold fire. Ellen knew that if her dad gestured the number three, they were to open fire. She was relieved to see her father gesture the number two.
"Charlie, emerge but hold fire!" Ellen ordered the QRF.
Charlie obeyed the ordered and she along with 15 other guards emerged from the woods behind the cabin and moved up behind the intruders. This was almost over.
"Now I'll ask again; drop your weapons and the fifteen people behind you along with the sniper will stop taking aim at you." Mac said. "Then we'll talk like decent folks, that fair?"
They were had. There was nothing they could do to get themselves out of this situation and his training told him to de escalate the situation but after everything that had happened in the last few weeks he couldn't bring himself to drop his weapon.
"As if robbing and killing are the worst things that can happen to a person nowadays?" He asked
His gun lowered but he didn't drop it. He knew he needed to but all he could think about was the young boy who had come to them, missing an arm with stories of canibals, and then a couple days later the schoolhouse being filled with geeks.
"There's more then one group around here. How do we know your the good type?"
His eyes darted around, desperately trying to find a way out of the situation. Then the man asked if his proposal was fair and it snapped something inside of him. He almost raised his weapon and shot, consequences be damned but then he looked at Dannie. He couldn't get her killed.
"Don't dick us around about what is fair asshole. What about this situation even borders on fair? You have us hopelessly out gunned. You wanna talk? Sure, it don't matter whether I like it. Either way I'm probably dead, but how about not insulting our intelligence while your doing it eh?"
He dropped his sidearm to the ground, a scowl plastered across his face.
Emre listened to the man, he was gonna let him talk, at least let him explain why the fuck they were doing this. He was partially angry at the group of people who had come to them, he still considered the bandits. Emre also wasn't too happy being called 'Arabian Guy'.
"Arabian guy? You motherfucker"
The man, Mac, called for others to come, to which a whole fuckin' lot did. All of them armed, guns trained on them. Emre didn't like it, they were way too prepared for a 'talk like decent folks'.
"So let me get this straight, so you're coming after us because you saw me run from your settlement, not even giving a second look at one of your people, and now you have a sniper pointed at her chest and people with guns trained on us?
After explaining what the group had did, he gave a little chuckle. He looked at the group of people who had come to the cabin again.
"There's not a time and place more fucked up than the apocalypse, is there?"
Not only had they been watched all night long, but their vehicles had been disabled by this man and his group as well? That was just the bees knees. And if the other's hadn't come, she wondered what exactly would have happened to her. More and more came out of the woods like termites crawling out from the woodwork. She shoved the gun back into her holster as she went to the cars.
"Wait, you what? You asshole!"
She paid no regard to the guns that were pointed at her. If they were going to shoot then they would have done so by now. She popped the hood of the car and opened it up to see the open holes where the spark plugs had been taken out. Slamming the hood shut, she went right up to Logan with hands on her hips as she loudly scolded him.
"And if I was here by myself? If a real threat had come and I needed to get away in my car? Then what? You'd want that on your hands?"
Throwing her arms up she turned back to Sterling, Emre and Jake.
"Who does this guy think he is?"
She turned back to Logan, not caring about the sniper rifle pointed at her.
"We were going to make our way to your settlement today and offer up a trade, but if you took our spark plugs, looks like we're not going anywhere today."

Jake listened to what the guy had to say, he learned that the guy was called Mac and that the son of a bitch took away their sparkplugs. And if as if that wasn’t enough he insulted Emre while doing explaining the story. He could hear Emre wasn’t too happy about it since he called Mac a motherfucker. Sterling also did his best to get out of the situation and just as he was about to yell something at him for stealing the sparkplugs, once again Dannie beat him to it, calling Mac an asshole. “You know she’s right, about the asshole thing.” Jake said.
Then Dannie made some good statements again, on how they could have killed the whole group by taking the sparkplugs. After that they also learned that there was a group of fifteen people watching them. Jake laughed in disbelief. “Real mature settlement you have there, take sparkplugs from cars, so we have no way out, and then storm a group of four people with a little army of fifteen people, what do you do when you see a horde of walkers? Storm them with a group of two hundred people.” he said. “I don’t think I even want to talk to you, I rather have a talk with the teletubbies even they are more mature.” Then he just shook his head. “How do you want us to trust you and give you a fair chance, if you do things like this.” Jake said annoyed.
Then Dannie turned around and also commented. “Well if I am right, he feels like Terminator, that is because he needs fifteen people and a sniper to protect him, son of a bitch.” Jake said even more annoyed. Then he just waited and kept his gun low, but he didn’t plan on dropping it.
Mac could take the insults and the ranting. They could call him names all they wanted, in the end he was the one with the fifteen people backing him. He was already doing more for them than they anticipated; the only thing that had kept Ellen from shooting the pale-skinned woman as she went over to her car was Mac's handsignal to hold fire. He had also shook his head towards Charlie when the woman had moved toward her car in order to leave her be.
The smarter people had dropped their weapons or holstered them away, apart from some kid who talked about maturity. Yet he was the one acting like a brat and expecting people to be civil. Mac couldn't help but chuckle.
"Ellen, shift target. Kid with the gun." Mac ordered his daughter, to which the laser dot appeared on Jake's chest. He then nodded at Charlie to which she took aim at Jake as well.
"Now once more for the people in the cheap seats." Mac said. "You can bitch all you want; but it doesn't change the truth that you've been outsmarted and that you're outgunned. You can call me names all you want but I'm still the guy with a lot of people and a very talented sniper backing him. Now how about you start using common sense like your friends here, realize that if we wanted to hurt or kill you we would've done so hours ago and drop your goddamn gun."
Mac wasn't losing his patience but this kid was the only one standing in between this situation being defused and them being able to talk to one another like regular people. But he wouldn't do so until he could ensure the safety of Ellen's people.
"As for the rest of you; we were here the whole time so if there was any danger we would've handled it." Mac continued. "Seeing as you were willing to leave one of your own in danger, I don't think you all are in the right position to talk about morality."
Two of Ellen's guards carried out the last person of the new group, the girl with the heterochemia. She was unconscious from getting hit in the head as the cabin was starting to give.
"Now how about you tell the dumbass here to drop the gun so we can get your friend to our infirmary?" Mac said. "We have a fully stocked sick bay and two doctors and a nurse. All it takes is for you all to stop bitching and taking a chance on deciding not everyone in this world has gone bad."
"God-fuckin'-dammit dad!" Ellen cursed silently when the woman she was aiming at went to check her car. Had she not seen her father gestured the 'hold fire' hand signal in time she would've put a bullet in her.
By now most of the people had complied, but it also seemed they weren't too happy about being ambushed. And how could they, Ellen would be pissed too if it happened to her. Still, one guy wasn't willing to drop the gun so it came to no surprise when her dad ordered to shift her aim at him.
Ellen felt that her heartbeat was rising, probably in anticipation of having to shoot this guy. She quickly regained her steady heartbeat again after regulating her breathing. She had her finger on the trigger, waiting for her dad to give the order; even though she wasn't too keen on killing a human being. But her Dad and Charlie were there, and a lot of other people she cared about and she'd do anything to ensure their safety.
When she saw Nathan K. and Kelsey drag the last of the unknown group out, she knew that all bogeys were accounted for. Maybe now that they had one of them in custody, they'd accept their situation, and their help. But not until the hothead had dropped his gun.
"Motherfucker, just drop the goddamn gun already!" Ellen muttered, hoping she didn't have to kill this man.
