Remy left the fire pit in front of the house, having seen Arden storm off to the docks. She didn't know what he was doing down there, although she figured it was likely to blow off steam. It was confusing to see Arden so angry and so hostile. When they were kids, he would have his tantrums, then be done with it forever. But now, it stayed. That angered lingered and it worried her, not just for Arden but for them all.
Before she could go down to him though, Ellie brought out bowls of food and she knew Arden wouldn't come running. They all had to eat and she couldn't remember the last time she put anything in her stomach. She grabbed a bowl for her and one for her cousin as she went down to the docks, saying nothing, but giving Ellie a nod in thanks.
He would hear her boots hitting the aged and damp wood of the docks as she tread lightly to find him. Her hands buried deep into her pockets as she saw him standing there, staring over the water's edge as the sun rose. She saw the flies zipping across the top of the water and ripples from the fish just under the surface. The same fish her and Owen were catching just the day before. That memory, as simple as it was, brought a smile to her face. That's were Owen said he loved her. That's where she realized she loved him back.
With any luck, Arden would have calmed down and they could speak reasonably. She hated fighting and even more so fighting with her own blood.
"Arden.." She approached slowly not wanting the rabid dog in him to come and bite.
"I wish you could let us all in. Come on, eat." She knew her cousin kept his emotions so close to the chest, they were buried under layers and layers of tough leather exterior. She came up and stood right next to him and saw that he had a fishing pole in his hands looking to catch today.
"You know we ain't here to hurt you. Me, Ellie, Amarie, Owen...everyone else. We're home now and this is where we're gonna stay. I made a promise to myself that I wasn't leaving. I promised Owen and I'm promising you. If I'm gonna die, it's gonna be here."
She didn't reach out to him, she didn't touch him, she didn't even look at him now as she sat down on the edge of the dock. It was a silent statement that she wasn't going anywhere until they talked this out. But maybe she wasn't the girl he thought she was. He didn't know her life in the city and he certainly didn't know what she experienced when she left soon after the outbreak.
"I knew people outside the Bayou, Arden. I had friends, lots of them. I met new people that I came to trust when I left the state. I can't just forget all that. Jasper and Luca will earn their keep here, I promise you that. They ain't bad guys and they ain't gonna do anything bad to our family."
She finally turned her head towards him, looking at him as he kept his gaze on the water, silent, still and probably seething inside.
"When you found me at that hotel in the City, you barely knew me anymore but you knew me. Hell, you still barely know me. Things are different from when we were kids. I'm different and the people I know are different. They ain't Bayou."
She sighed and pulled her knees up, wrapping her arms around her legs as she swatted away a few mosquitoes buzzing around.
"I ain't letting Owen leave and I can't let you hurt him, Arden. He doesn't want to hurt you either but he knows you hate him and he'll defend himself if he has to. I just don't understand why you can't accept all this."
