Jay ran down the road with his backpack slung over his shoulder. He ignored the terrified screams and animistic snarls from around him. He had to get to his home, get to his parents and get to his boyfriend before these things get to them or him.
Jay rounded the corner, only to ran into something. He felt cold hands grip onto him and his eyes snapped up. Clouded soulless eyes stared down at him, a gaping hole in its cheek. He started to lean down, opening its mouth and got read to tear a chunk out of him.
A gunshot sounded and the head jerked before it fell to the ground, letting Jay go. He looked over and gave a sigh of relief.
His father stood there, a smoking pistol in hand.
"Jay hurry up!" The man shouted and Jay scrambled over to his father. The two ran until they reached a two story home on the outskirts of the city and ran inside.
In the living room was a woman, stuffing clothes into a trash bag. Beside her was another boy, about eighteen years old, wearing a pair of goggles around his head.
"Mary." His father called, making the woman look over at them.
"Jay! Mark!" Mary cried with relief before dashing over and hugged both of them.
"Jay, I need you to gather what you need from your room alright?" Mark said to his son after his wife pulled away. "Sam will go with you." He motioned to the other boy. Jay nodded and with Sam, the two ran up the stairs and to the last room on the left of the hall. Jay quickly dumped the contents of is backpack out and started to stuff clothing inside. He turned to his bookcase, reached up to the top and grab a sword that was still in its sheath.
"You got everything?" Sam asked as he zipped up the backpack.
"Yeah." Jay answered as he came over and took it from the other boy. He shouldered his backpack and kept a tight grip on his sword with his other hand. The raced down the stairs and saw Mary and Mark getting finished.
"We got some water and food in your old backpack by the door. Sam, could you carry it?" Mary asked and Sam nodded before walking over and shouldering that pack. The four ran out and to Mark's old Ford truck.
Mark got into the driver's side, put the key in the ignition and turned it. The engine sputtered and coughed before falling back into silence. Mark tried again and again but still the same result.
"Uh...dad?" Jay swallowed as he watched the walking corpses closing in slowly. Mark looked where his son was looking and cursed. He got out of his old truck and looked over at Sam.
"Wheres your truck?"
"At my house, why?"
Mark and Mary shared a look before turning to Jay. Mark took his dog tags off and put them on Jay.
"Mom? Dad?" Jay looked between them.
"Sam, watch over our little boy." Mary smiled before walking over and hugging Jay. She took a step back as Mark ruffled his son's hair.
"We are proud of you son. Keep being who you are and never let anyone change that."
"You will always be our baby boy and we love you so much."
"Sam, take him and get out of here." Mark looked over at Sam, who slowly nodded.
"No! Mom! Dad!" Jay shouted before Sam wrapped an arm around his waist and began to run. Mark took out his gun and turned to the oncoming horde with his wife.
"Sam we need to go back! Mom! Dad!"
"I'm sorry Jay, but we can't go back..."
The two ran to a black pickup truck and the two hopped inside. The truck started up and Sam threw it in gear and the truck roared down the street. Jay stared ahead with a blank expression on his face. They had just left Mary and Mark to basically be eating by those things, how was he suppose to forgive himself for this?
A hand gently slid into his, a thumb rubbing his knuckle.
"We will be alright baby, I promise." He heard Sam murmur to him.
They drove until they ran out of gas in the middle of a back road, surrounded by trees on either side. The two got out, shouldered the two packs and wondered out into the forest. They had already drunk half of their water supply and now they only had four bottles left. They stumbled upon a cabin that seemed to be abandoned. They glanced at each other before decided to walk in.
Jay walked in first, his sword drawn. Sam followed behind but went into different room than Jay.
Jay didn't find any of the corpses in the rooms that he check.
"GET THIS THING THE FUCK OFF OF ME!" Sam's voice vibrated throughout the house. Jay bolted and rushed in. He saw a corpse on Sam's back, trying to gnaw on his neck. He quickly stab its head, making it let Sam go.
"Sam? Are you okay?" He asked and Sam slowly turn towards him with a regretful smile. Jay could see the gushing gash on his neck, blood staining his shirt.
"If someone gets bit by one of those things, it means that I'll be turned." Sam told the other. "You know what to do."
"No! I won't do it!" Jay shook his head, not wanting to believe it.
"Please Jay, I don't want to end up like them." Sam pleaded. Tears start to form in Jay's eyes. Sam took off his goggles and put them around Jay's neck before putting a hand behind his head and gently kissed him on the forehead.
"Your the greatest thing that ever happened to me, never forget that." Sam took a deep breath as he felt the blade tip touch the side of his head. "I love you Jay." "I love you too Sam."
With that, Jay thrusts the sword through Sam's head, tears pouring down his face. He let the body fall and took out his sword before stumbling out the door and vomiting onto the ground. Once he was finished, he looked over to the side and saw a bicycle. He glanced around before jogging over and grab the bike. He mounted the bike before starting to pedal, leaving the last of his old life behind.
Now, he was alone in this new world, and he will do whatever it takes to survive it for his parents and for Sam.
