Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse: There are two things Sarah and her twin sister Tamara have in common: (1) they were born on the same day 35 years ago and (2) they're both out of the closet (though Sarah is more militant about it than Tamara, for obvious reasons)...other than that, they really didn't have a lot in common; where Tamara was a neighborhood tomboy, Sarah was a bookworm; where Tamara went into the Army to fly helicopters, Sarah went off to California to go into journalism, eventually landing a position with The Advocate magazine, rising to a senior reporter's position and opinion commentator on both CNN and MSNBC. She did, however, take up - at Tamara's insistence - flying as a hobby, eventually getting her pilot's license and learning to fly small aircraft as a stress reliever of sorts...
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?: -Having flown back from Lake Tahoe (after having flown there the week before to get out of San Francisco) the morning of Outbreak Day, all seemed alright...until Sarah tired to get landing clearance at San Francisco International and was told the airport was closed (as were most all airports in the days immediately before and subsequently afterward); as she was flying to an alternate airport, Sarah flew slow and low over the City by the Bay. Although she couldn't see a whole lot, what she did see from her light aircraft horrified her: fires burning throughout her beloved city, people rioting everywhere, chaos all around....knowing she couldn't stay any longer - and with fuel beginning to run low - Sarah turned south and began flying along the central California coast, landing east of Monterey when the engine on her small aircraft simply wouldn't run anymore, being out of gas and all. After landing, Sarah "appropriated" a Land Rover Defender in a nearby parking lot (after dispatching a walker that tried to sneak up behind her) and got the hell out of Dodge; where she went, she didn't care...she just wanted out of the area and fast.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse: After making her way south the first year or so - hooking up with a few small groups of survivors at times, making her way along by herself at other times - along the California coast, Sarah eventually came upon San Simeon State Park - centered around the palatial estate of early 20th-century media magnate William Randolph Hearst - closed due to budget cuts but still maintained to a minimal status. Taking up residence in one of the rooms in the main estate, Sarah Lyell - along with a handful of survivors she came across over the course of that first year - began rebuilding some semblance of civilization along the Cali coast, making short runs into the nearby coastal communities when needed (which wasn't often given just how well-stocked San Simeon was) but otherwise just laying low, keeping to themselves and wondering if they'll run across anymore survivors, a thought that's crossed their minds over the past two years....meanwhile, Sarah thinks about her twin sister, Tamara, and often wonders if she'll ever see her again (not knowing that her sister is alive and well, on the East Coast, but preparing to travel west...)
