Male
Appearance:
Jude is a lithe male in his mid-twenties. He stands at 5'10'' and is slim in his gait, but toned from working in kitchens. His hair is dark brown and hangs around his ears and the nape of his neck, and his eyes are dark brown as well. He is almost never seen clean-shaven, sporting a thick, scruffy beard that sits tight to his face. More often than not, he dresses a little dumpy, in baggy jackets and loose jeans. It is evident in his appearance that he doesn't pride himself on the way that he looks, and doesn't have much fuss when it comes to showing off.
Occupation (studies and job before the outbreak):
Before the apocalypse, Jude worked as a line cook for his father in the town diner. Afterwards, he worked as the executive chef for Parnell's father in his New Orleans restaurant.
Hometown (city, state, country):
Jude was born and raised in Poulence, Louisiana.
Relationships (relatives, friends,...):
Jude's relationship with his family was an emotional roller coaster. He was not particularly close to his father, who had a severe drinking problem, and the two inevitably cut ties once he moved to Parnell's father's restaurant. He and his mother had a touch-and-go relationship, mostly bonding over doing drugs together. His parents having been divorced, Jude went to go and live with his father after her death, which only exacerbated their problems. Outside of the family realm, Jude did well for himself. Personable and likable, he made friends everywhere he went, even if it was only skin-deep. Because of the nature of the restaurant industry, Jude became close friends with the LeBlancs, and he met Brody Crowe on his frequent visits to collect the rent on the diner. The two became fast friends, and through Brody, he met the rest of the Crowe family. Not having a family of his own, it was nice to be around them at first. But once he saw the way that they treated Brody, he ultimately disliked them and was cordial strictly on his behalf. Before the world ended, Jude and Brody were best friends and spent all of their free time together.

Describe your character's life before the Apocalypse:
Growing up was rough for Jude. His parents had been divorced for as long as he could remember, and he grew up living with his mother. She had a severe drug problem and it bled into every other aspect of her life. She didn't work, and she supported herself and Jude solely with money that she got from Jude's father. The bulk of the money that she received from him went straight up her nose, however, and Jude was often left underfed and neglected. The time spent with his father wasn't much better. He was a terrible alcoholic, and the only thing that got him out of bed in the morning was his need to run the town diner, which he owned. Jude was not very close with his father, and in an effort to change that, he was given a job as a prep cook when he was thirteen. It was strictly under the table because of his age, but Jude was happy to have something to preoccupy his time. There was rarely any electric on at his home, and as such, he was left uncomfortable and with nothing to do, so having an escape that paid him anything at all was appealing to him.
During Jude's teenage years, he had a lot of his plate and struggled in school. His mother's cocaine habit had rubbed off on him, and the hidden drug use within the kitchen staff at the diner had facilitated his own drug use. He and his mother often did drugs together, with not much else to bond over. His father stayed distant from him, though Jude was happy in the kitchen for other reasons. He had advanced quickly from prep cook to line cook as he aged, and he discovered that he really enjoyed cooking. He was skilled at it and seemed to have a natural understanding of what went well together. Jude focused much more on cooking than he did on school, and he almost flunked out a few times.
Personable and funny, Jude got along well with everyone that he came into contact with. He had a lot of friends at school, and when he was sixteen, he met Brody Crowe on a more official basis when he came to collect the rent for his father's diner. The two would meet monthly during those visits, and they became fast friends. He had a blossoming social life, a job that he enjoyed, and he was making some money to help his mother out with the bills. It seemed like everything was going well for Jude.
But they wouldn't stay that way. When Jude was seventeen, Ernie St. Mordeaux sold Jude's mother a bad batch of cocaine. He had been selling to her for years, but this would prove to be the last time. Jude and his mother shared the cocaine, and the next thing he knew, he was awakening in a hospital bed. He had overdosed and was in very bad shape, being within an inch of his life when his eyes opened. His mother had died from the drugs, leaving Jude alone in that bed, trying to come to terms with what had happened. It proved to be a wake up call for Jude, and once he was out of the hospital, he turned his life around. He kicked the drugs to the best of his ability and focused more on school. He graduated, though the temptation of being in his father's kitchen was too much for him. He wanted better things for himself, and being a talented chef, he decided to go and work in New Orleans for Parnell's father. Jude's father was upset, and they cut ties because of his leaving.
Once in New Orleans, Jude made a successful life for himself. He had a great job as an executive chef with total creative freedom, and he was surrounded by people he loved while he did what he loved. Brody Crowe kept in contact with him after he left Poulence, and the two became best friends. Jude was clean from seventeen onward, and only relapsed once. Jude would cater the parties at the Crowe Manor, and it was at one of those events that he relapsed. But Brody helped him through it and helped to take care of him when he would withdrawal, and it brought the pair even closer. They became inseparable, despite the fact that Jude disliked the Crowes for the way that they treated Brody.
What happened to your character on Outbreak Day?:
On outbreak day, Jude was prepping for three hundred covers. It was slated to be a busy night, and he didn't have time to waste. He directed his kitchen staff and helped them prepare for the evening, but news was beginning to pop up all over town. There was talk of a virus, of riots nearby. Jude chalked it up to paranoia and continued to prepare the menu, too preoccupied with his task to pay attention to what was happening around him. Reservations were being cancelled left and right, and by the time that dinner service was slated to start, the streets were becoming congested and warnings were flashing on the news.
Riots started in the streets, exploding in the city as panic swept through. Jude had no concept of what was happening, but before he knew it, Emilio, the restaurant's investor, came to shut them down for the evening. He had said it was too dangerous, and seemed to know something that they didn't. They locked the place down, and as things got out of hand, the staff started to panic and tried to leave. Jude tried to hold everyone together, as did Parnell's father, but Emilio called upon his men. The crime family stepped in and held up the joint, wanting the supplies and protection all to themselves, and the resulting struggle ended with Parnell's father's death at Emilio's hands. They immediately started killing the staff, wanting no loose ends, and they scattered around the restaurant like roaches. Jude managed to escape through the back door and fled into the rioting streets.
He couldn't decide what was worse, the death on the inside or the death on the outside. People were attacking each other and fighting, biting each other. He tried to call Brody to get a hold of him, but the lines were blocked. Jude ran as far away from the restaurant as he could, eventually scaling a busted fire escape and taking shelter up by where no one could reach him. He rode the night out there, protected and hidden.
Describe your character's life after the Apocalypse:
Given the nature of his childhood and teenage years, coupled with the fact that his entire staff had been slaughtered in cold blood and that there were people eating each other in the streets, Jude thought that things couldn't get any worse. But he would soon see how wrong he was. Getting out of New Orleans in one piece was next to impossible, and it took everything Jude had to accomplish the task. Moving slow and steady, taking extra caution, it took him weeks to get back to Poulence. The small town was virtually untouched, but the big city had been in total chaos. With no ties to his family, Brody was on his mind, and he made his way to the Crowe Manor to get into contact with him.
When he got there, not much had changed. The Manor itself was standing strong and proud, as was the family that owned it. Jude tried to get to Brody, but he was wasn't able to get past the porch steps. He was famished and tired, and all he wanted was to talk to Brody and come inside, but Francine came out and watched him from the porch. She whispered something in Brody's ear, and sure enough, Jude's closest friend told him that he needed to leave, that he couldn't stay there. Shocked and hurt, Jude tried to plead his case, hearing walkers creeping in the woods, but Brody wasn't listening. His brothers came down the stairs and beat him like a dog on the lawn, and with nothing else to do, Jude crawled away into the treeline to lick his wounds.
Poulence was safe enough for a short while, and Jude moved around as he could. His father's diner had been ransacked, and he was shot dead in the kitchen. Jude felt numb, and he took over the diner for a short period of time for shelter. Eventually, he ran out of food, and he went out to hunt instead. Alone, he was surprised to see people riding around in a jeep, and they pulled over when they saw him. Jude was anxious about their presence, not recognizing them as Bayou folk, but they told him that they were from New Orleans and were picking up survivors for their new stronghold. They claimed to have food and water, weapons and safety. With nothing to lose and no one to turn to, Jude was convinced to go with them, thinking that perhaps he would find someone he knew.
But it was not a stronghold that he was being taken to, at least not one with his protection in mind. The people that had picked him up were from a group of slavers. The stronghold in question was theirs, and to them, picking up Jude was no different than picking up supplies on a run. Jude had been tricked, and became an unwilling and unhappy slave. He insisted that he had skills, that he could cook, but they were disinterested in that. Organized and cruel, they put on live shows for themselves. Jude was almost always in them, performing acts on other people, unable to refuse without facing dire consequences. To appease them and keep them sedated, they were offered drugs in exchange for their services, and Jude quickly found himself back on them again, unable to cope with what was happening.
Matters were only made worse when the leader's wife took an interest in him. Jude would have to balance putting on live shows with people, on them and others on him, while also seeing to her needs. He hated all of it, and spiraled downwards worse than ever before. He had the protection of the stronghold from the outside world, but because of how it was for him, he would have rather died. He was at the slaver's stronghold for over a year, and one day Acer's men came to propose a slave trade. Jude jumped at the opportunity, wanting to get away from the wife and the abuses that he suffered at the husband's hands, and his leap of faith worked out for the best. When he arrived at Acer's stronghold, he was much more damaged than the other slaves, and it showed. No longer providing live shows, he was able to have a minute to himself, and there was an instance in which Acer had a conversation with him about the other stronghold. Jude explained that he was a chef before all of this, and Acer decided that his place was in the kitchen, not the bedroom. He freed him of his slave status, and Jude was grateful and loyal to him. Happy to be cooking again, Jude stopped relying heavily on the drugs for support, and used them more for recreation.
But things never could go well for Jude. He was only with Acer and his men for half a year before they were invaded and the compound fell, with everyone he knew dead. He managed to escape, and with nowhere to go and nothing to do, Jude returned to Poulence once more. He tried to find Parnell, but when he went to the police station to see if he was there, it had been burned to the ground. He tried to visit the veterinarian's office, but it was fortified and Jude was too sick from the cocaine to try and muscle his way in. For the past seven months, Jude has been wandering the Bayou, living and surviving as best as he can. He is gaunt and sick, making his drugs last to avoid withdrawal, all while housing a deep, bitter hatred in his heart. The Crowes did this to him. Brody did this to him. And despite the fact that there are flesh-eating monsters milling around him, he would prefer their company to that of the Crowe's.
