The ride was quiet and bumpy. Julie said nothing She only looked down at the slightly healed skin on her finger where Zane's wedding ring used to be. She loathed the idea of putting one back on. She allowed her mind to wander a bit. She thought of the time she had spent with Brina at the mall. A small smile started to form on the corner of her mouth as she thought about Charly walking on them and how uncomfortable she had been. She thought about Miri rolling around in her wheelchair shirtless using her massive dog as a leesh and looking for drugs, and then she began to chuckle a little as she wiped the wetness from her eyes. She thought about Lane..... She hadn't had much time with Lane at all and he was ripped from her life again. She wished she could tell him herself that she was sorry. That it had to be this way, but she couldn't. Things were how there were. The only difference was she wasn't the same person returning to Zane she had left. She was stronger. When Zane found her she was weak and frightened. She had survived for three years, but because she hid from everything. But she had come to realize she wasn't as weak and frail as she thought. Lane had taught her to be a strong independant person. He taught her how to be a survivor. Julie got a weird look in the rear view mirror from the guy in the passenger seat when she started laughing a little, but fuck him. He didn't know what was going on in her head. The emotions that were whirling through her brain like a tornado. She was glad to have gotten the chance to meet Lane's friends and she was happy that Charly was there to take care of her brother. The two had seemed like they were made for each other. Julie rubbed the raw skin on her ring finger.
Julie: "We fucking there yet pecker'wood?"
As if to answer her question the van stopped. She saw the familiar building in front of them. The van door slid open and she reluctantly got out. It was getting dark out. The sky was a dark shade of blue and off to the right a flock of birds flew out of a tall tree at the same time. Bet they're going some place nicer than here. Julie thought. She knew only a few men here she had to worry about. There was Zane of course, and then there was that little shitstain Burke. Julie quietly hoped he had died while she was away. Then there was Grey. She hated Grey almost as much as Zane. Truth be told everyone here was a slimey piece'oshit. Julie walked inside the compound and up the steps to get inside. Grey tried to grab her arm and phsyically escort her but she yanked it free. She gave him a look of pure contempt. He didn't try it again. She was ushered into familiar surroundings. She was ushered into the room she had shared with her husband. He was standing there smiling. The table was set for two with candles and music on an old boombox that took batteries. Zane had wanted the night to be perfect. He was wearing nice dressy clothes and his hair was done up perfect. She had just entered the room and she could smell him clear across it. He smelt nice. He looked nice too. Julie walked in and looked like she had just got back from vacation. She had on a pair of brown work boots she had gotten at the mall. They were steel toe and the laces were undone. She had on a pair of short shorts that showed off her particularly nice long tan legs and a neon pink tank top. She had bathed daily at the park in the water and she was pretty clean at the moment. At least she didn't smell like most survivors normally smell. Zane had always kept expensive perfumes for her to smell "acceptable."
Julie: "Hello baby."
Julie said as she strolled across the room threw her arms around Zane's neck and kissed him on the lips.
