((Mk I'm going to throw everyone into seats and if their seat isn't ok with anyone just MSG me and I'll edit this post to fix it ))
They had left the mall in a flurry of fear, everyone getting into the SUV that thankfully had third row seating. Lane had grabbed the wheel after making sure they were all safe, even snatching their procured supplies. Charly had ended up in the middle row, Julie snatched the seat beside her in her panic. Miri was in the front seat so that her broken leg would have enough room to be stretched out like it needed and Brina was in the back seat with a very large Brutus. Charly was terrified, chewing on her nails until she tasted the coppery tang of blood. She kept turning to look behind them, expecting to see one of the dark vans on the horizon.
She afraid and nervous...and Lane was driving and unable to be her security blanket. Brina had calmed her before by holding her hand after she had been grazed by a bullet. She once again found herself searching for the same calming effect. But this time Julie was near her. She didn't know how Lane's sister would take it, if she would quickly rebuff her. They had started out on the right foot but things had went south since she walked in on her and Brina being intimate. Cautiously her pale fingers touched Julie's hand. Finally curling around her hand without waiting for a response. Charly didn't know Julie's story....it hadn't been one of the things they talked about when they sat together. They had focused on happier times before the world went to hell. She didn't know that the woman had been tortured in that place or horrors for months.
Charly turned to look over her shoulder at Brina to see how she was fairing....but Brina was always so strong...it was unlikely she'd show her fear even if she felt it.
-------Several Hours Later, Halfway Home------
They had ran out of gas....just like last time. But this time they were at least stopped at an old motel in the middle of nowhere. Three vehicles were in the small parking lot and it was mentioned that they would siphon gas in the morning. But darkness was painting the sky and everyone was bound to be exhausted from hours cramped in a car....Charly wondered how Brutus had held his pee so long. Dogs peed a lot....right? She wasn't sure, but happy none the less to finally step out of the SUV into the cool night air. Her arms stretched over her head, turning her head this way and that. The only weapon she had at the moment was the pair of scissors she had repeatedly stabbed the walker with....but she kept them tucked in her pocket like a sort of talisman.
It made sense to scout the place out....if walkers were here there couldn't be many. There were no houses or businesses for miles.....so maybe a couple workers and a traveler or two? She paused and turned back to the group, her eyes shifting to Lane....hours of driving had to be hard on him. She stepped closer to him , letting her fingers trail down his tattooed arms. "A motel? Ever the romantic." She joked, the first lighthearted thing she had said since they ran from the bandit patrol.
