"Hey, your welcome," Alex said as they followed the rest of the convoy over to Century Boulevard and continued heading over towards Hollywood Park; in the background, Ben's voice began, telling everyone what the plan was once they got to their destination. Alex rolled her eyes a moment; she'd already heard the plan back at the Station, so she zoned out the radio transmission. "So, where'd you come from, Piers?" Alex asked, glancing back at the kid at they drove along.
As they began to see, out in the distance, the grandstands and offices of what was the former Hollywood Park horse-racing track, Ben keyed his handset and spoke. "All vehicles, heads up," he began. "Once we get to Hollywood Park, here's what we're going to do; I know you've heard it before, but here goes...
"When we pull up to the front, I want Morgan's team to breach the front office entrance and proceed in, with both my team and Colby's right behind them. Parratto, I want your team to hold the door; Alex, stay behind with Jessica and her team, but be ready to enter at a moment's notice if necessary....
"Once we secure the office building in front of the grandstands, we'll spread out and begin going through the grandstands, starting on the inside and working our way to the outside; once we do that, we'll rally on the horse-track and go from there. We've got enough supples and ammo to last several days if necessary but if we stick to the plan and carry it out, we can begin securing the place for permanent habitation. 7-1 out." As he set the handset back down, he glanced over at the driver and smiled. "Relax; we'll get this done."

"Oceanside. It was was a lucky break to find a police car for the first time on the outbreak of all this crap. But it was even tougher getting working vehicles, especially as the days rolled on. I just wanted to get to safety, damnit! To relax, all that...uh, what about you two?", Piers asked Alex and Amy curiously since they were on the subject of where he was from, he wanted to know about them as well as he looked around towards the outside of the windshield, not quite hearing the radio well enough, if at all...and wondered what the convoy was going to do?
Post by Alexandra Stapleton on Jun 25, 2016 15:07:08 GMT -5
"Oceanside, huh?" Alex replied. "Ben'll be pleased to hear that; he served in the 1st Marine Division down there, so he'll be pleased to know at least one person made it out of there," referring to the division's former home.
"As for us?" she continued, pointing between her and Amy. "I'm originally from Calabasas, just to the west of LA. Grew up a surfer girl; spent all my free time growing up out on the water surfing...and damn, I was good. Amy, on the other hand, grew up...where was it again?" she asked. "Some place in Ohio....The Mistake by the Lake, the place where they set the Erie River on fire--"
"Cleveland, Alex!" Amy said, swatting the medic playfully on the shoulder, "Cleveland, Ohio!" It was a regular game between them, jazzing each other over their hometowns; it was a keep to stay sane in an otherwise insane world. After a few moments, Alex continued. "So, Piers, what'd you do growing up down in Oceanside? Get out in the water? Enjoy the beach, the sand, the surf...the ladies?" adding the last part to gauge a reaction from their passenger.

Piers grinned as he listened to the playful bickering between the two women and then to Alex's brief history of what she used to do prior to the dead rising again. It had to be quite fun, right? Going out to the beach and surfing, or basking on the beach, playing with the sand...watching girls? But none of those were him. He had no thing he could call "fun" from that time, except maybe playing "Metal Gear Solid" with the neighbors, a thing he did after he had run away from home. It's what he did to develop his method of sneaking and evasion. And such a thing reflected on Piers' expression as it dropped slightly from a smile to one of regret and sadness, or something that showed he had a chip on his shoulder.
At Alex's question, he shook his head and buried his face in his arm among one of the seats before lifting it up again to look at Alex, his eyes half-lidded now as his expression was a bit somber, replying to her nonetheless, of course. "No, I haven't had such a luxury. Not in my household. My mother was one of the worst kinds, who wasn't supportive. I would be the one working chores around the house, and whenever my father would offer to help since he knew I was working so hard, it was she who'd just stop him with a glare. She wanted me to suffer...and I'm not even going to go into what happened one night...", he said with a glance towards the side now. So from his answer, it could be said that he hadn't done a thing of what Alex asked about, not even the girls part. He hasn't had the chance to go to the beach on his own since he had no money.

Listening to Piers talk about his youth down in Oceanside, two things became readily apparent to Alex as they got closer to Hollywood Park...(1) that not all of us had it easy growing up and (2) I shouldn't've been so flippant in asking Red what he did growing up. Falling silent as they headed down the street, it was all Alex could do to not turn around and hug Piers...instead, she just concentrated on driving, not really knowing what to say or do in the moment.
Post by Piers "Red" Bailey on Jun 26, 2016 5:21:43 GMT -5
On the flip side, however, a more jovial topic of Piers came up, started by the boy himself, as he sat back in the chair with his arms crossed over his chest as he spoke, "I always wondered what it'd be like to be around a girl, though. Especially on the beach. I'd dream of going there one day, to the beautiful West Coast beach, swim in the ocean or talk to girl...possibly get a girlfriend. That isn't weird of me, is it, is it?", he asked...his repetition of "is it" not coming off as intentionally annoying, but it was more of a...verbal tic, it was something he couldn't help, that he was compelled to let out, as if urged.
Post by Alexandra Stapleton on Jun 26, 2016 18:54:49 GMT -5
"No, its' not weird," Alex replied as they slowed up, the grandstands of Hollywood Park just off to their right, "and who knows; those things might just happen. For now, though," she added, bringing the firetruck to a stop alongside the rest of the vehicles, "we work." Shutting the engine off, she said to the others, "let's go ahead and get the gear out of the back. Stick with me, kid; we'll make it."
Post by Piers "Red" Bailey on Jun 26, 2016 19:45:53 GMT -5
Piers wondered just what Alex meant by "those things might just happen", as if he knew such a thing would never happen again due to the nature of the world, or even if some woman would even contemplaye being with him. He didn't feel himself to be boyfriend material, and he knew that in this world, if a woman were to fall in love or infatuation, then she would want a man that could support her, to defend her, to make her happy...all of the things he knew he didn't know how to do. The thought saddened him slightly, but nonetheless he hopped out of the truck and looked around curiously after Alex told him to stick with her, and that he did.
Post by Alexandra Stapleton on Jun 27, 2016 1:20:43 GMT -5
Walking back to the side of the firetruck, Alex began sliding open the different storage compartments, setting out various boxes and other medical supplies and setting them down on the asphalt, mentally noting which box contained certain things, which boxes needed to be opened first, etc.etc.,etc.,. Hearing Amy doing the same thing on the other side of the vehicle, Alex called out to her. "Amy, go ahead and start hauling everything over to Parratto's Humvee; she should be set up by now," remembering Ben's orders for when they arrived at Hollywood Park.
Motioning Piers over, Alex began picking up the first of the boxes she'd set out on the asphalt. "Help me with these boxes," she said, heft one of them up on a shoulder, "and follow me."
Post by Piers "Red" Bailey on Jun 27, 2016 4:38:31 GMT -5
Piers hopped out of the truck and watched as Alex delegated Amy to go off elsewhere to haul stuff to someone, someone that owned a Humvee, apparently. Well, this sort of work he could easily handle, mustering enough strength to safely handle not one but two boxes braced against his chest and angled slightly against his shoulder so he could see where he was going and to see where he was turning when he had to, and smiled to Alex with a grin, his nod gesturing for her to lead the way as he exhaled to keep his breathing stable.
Post by Alexandra Stapleton on Jun 27, 2016 5:56:18 GMT -5
With a box over each shoulder, Alex carried them around the back of the truck and set them down next to Parratto's Humvee, which already had a large tarp set over it and anchored off to one side. Underneath it was a table with a military-spec radio on it; over it, she could faintly hear Ben and the others as they began going through the building, room by room from the ground floor up.
Stepping aside to allow Piers to set the boxes he was carrying down where she'd set hers at, one of the others who had been assigned to hold the outside nodded towards Alex. "Well, I see we're going to make it since I see the Angel of Mercy is here to save us all," she said, walking over and fist-bumping Alex. Seeing Piers nearby, she added, "Who's the new kid?"
"Oh, Piers?" Alex replied. "We picked him up on the way here, Jessica; it was either take him back to the station or bring him with us. Ben said he could stay but he was our responsibility while we were out here," pointing between her, Piers and Amy, who'd rounded the rear corner of the Humvee, having anchored the other end of the tarp down while they were talking.
"And speaking of my better half," Jessica replied, giving Amy a kiss on the cheek, causing Alex to roll her eyes in a "what, here?' kind of manner. "What, Alex?" she added, sarcastically.
"Business first, Jessica...business first." Alex said, reminding the other woman who was in charge outside. According to the plan Ben had spoken of en-route to Hollywood Park, Alex was in charge of everyone outside the building. "Speaking of which, Jessica, let's finish getting this CP set up and then getting some temporary barricades set up back there; I don't want anyone sneaking up back there off of Century and walking in on us here, human or not."
Post by Piers "Red" Bailey on Jun 28, 2016 2:20:47 GMT -5
Piers looked between the 3 women as they spoke, being quite the oblivious one due to not having been in a group before, not having interacted with women before, and didn't know what plans were being enacted. Piers looked around a bit nervously as if anxious about possibly getting picked out for being someone anyone hasn't seen before outside of Alex and Amy, that he would get the 2 of them in trouble...that he was freeloading on some serious shit.
Piers exhaled lightly as he placed the boxes where they needed to be, and walked back to Amy and Alex along with the other woman that he noticed talking to Alex, and walked back to the 3 with his hat being adjusted, briefly giving view of his unkempt wavy-curly light brown hair that fluttered lightly in the wind.

Ninety minutes later....Sitting underneath another tarp stretched over the Angel of Mercy, Alex sat on the ground, her back against the truck, drinking water from a canteen and feeling rather pleased with their progress thus far. Off on one side, she could see the temporary barricades they'd installed along Century where it came into the parking lot: nothing heavy, just saw-horses put together and connected with ropes and chains. It wouldn't keep a determined enemy - walkers, humans, whatever was out there - from getting in, but it would slow them down a little.
To the other side, she saw where their outside command post was set up, with one person monitoring the radios while another person kept notes on where everyone was inside the nearby office building...all-in-all, Alex thought, its' been a good day thus far. Looking over, she tapped Piers on the shoulder and offered him her canteen, which was still pretty full of water. "You alright?" she asked, offering him a drink from her canteen as they sat there and thinking, the kid's a hard worker...I think he's gonna' be alright.
Post by Piers "Red" Bailey on Jun 28, 2016 21:06:01 GMT -5
Piers, who was sitting near Alex under the tarp against the truck he had ridden to where they were on, looked around to Alex as he heard her question regarding if he was okay, and his eyes lowered to the canteen offered to him. He gently took it, staring down at the mouth of the container intently as if in thought before he looked back at Alex, this time with an answer. "Yeah, I'm good...it's just, this is all so new to me. I've never been in a group before, I've only ever always been on my own. I'd break into houses and sleep in the beds, just by myself..but now, I've got you and the others, and...it's just all so new to me, you know, you know?", he asked Alex softly, his gaze on her own beautiful eyes with his lips parted lightly before he slowly, reluctantly even, lifted the canteen towards him.
He knew Alex had her own lips on it to drink, and him sharing in it would be an indirect kiss between the two of them. The very thought brought heat to his cheeks in a slight blush. Well, he was sure she'd thought of that herself, or he'd be surprised otherwise, and it was offered to him...so with that, he tipped it upwards with his own lips on the mouth of the canteen and drank a moderate bit of water out of it, not enough to completely empty it, but enough to make it at least near halfway full. He'd been working hard for the last hour and a half, and he hadn't eaten much or drank anything, so this was to be expected.

"Yeah, I think the past three years have pretty much re-written the book on civilization," Alex replied. "Most all of us have been together as a group for most of the past three years...some of us, like Amy," pointing to her as she sat down on the other side of Piers, "and myself have been at 77th Street for nearly three years, others for less than that...but I think all of us have one thing in common: we'd like to think that while civilization got knocked pretty hard on its' ass, maybe someone was trying to give us a second chance at doing everything...at least that's what I like to think." Noticing that Piers' cheeks seemed a little flushed, she asked, "You alright there, Piers?"
Post by Piers "Red" Bailey on Jun 30, 2016 20:11:50 GMT -5
Piers flushed a bit more before finishing his drinking a bit, then handing Alex her canteen back before shaking his head...part of him wanted to tell Alex what he was thinking, what he was so hyped up about..but another pointed out that if he did, Alex may think him a pervert or a freak and would want to be away from him, that she'd hate him. He didn't want that...then again, he knew she would be just as upset if not more so if he hid it from her, and besides...who knows, she may even feel the same way...he hoped.
"Um..sorry, just thinking..we had an indirect kiss..you drank out of this and I just did myself..I have to admit, it felt good. And I agree, we've all had it rough, didn't we, didn't we?", he asked Alex with a glance back to her as if wondering how she would reply?

"You could say that," Alex replied, taking the canteen from Piers' outstretched hand and drinking some more water before closing the canteen and setting it down. "And yes, we did have an indirect kiss," she added, leaning over and lightly kissing him on the lips, "now we've had a direct kiss," winking at him before leaning back against the Humvee. "But to answer that last bit: we've all had it rough, but I'd like to think that here and there and in little pockets, there's little bits of civilization trying to rebuild something, some semblance of a life.....so, yeah, we've all had it rough to some degree," Alex said, wondering what Piers' reaction to her kiss would be.
Meanwhile, inside the office building....."You're kidding, Vestal, right?" Ben asked as he and his team knelt behind what appeared to be a steel door, which unfortunately for them was blocking their path forward. So far, everyone had secured the first floor and were now in the process of going through the second floor...or at least, we were, he mused. Examining the door for several moments, he had an idea for getting through. "We have any breeching gear, Mackenzie?"
"Yeah, we should have some," she replied, going through her explosives kit for breeching material...,"yeah, we're good," she said, quickly laying out her materials - a few pieces of C4, detonation cord and primer. As she began assembling everything in place, Ben motioned for everyone else to leave; breaching a door was dangerous enough in Past Times and explosive breeching was the most dangerous of all; one false spot, one mis-positioned piece of explosive and things could go south in an instant.
"Go ahead and start rigging everything, Mackenzie," Ben said to her. "I'm going to step outside the room and let everyone know what's gonna happen; don't rig everything together until I give you the go signal, okay?" Stepping outside, he keyed his radio. "All stations, all stations, be advised: we're about to breach a door on the second floor; I want everyone outside to stand-to in case we draw any unwanted attention. Everyone inside, stay where you are, understood?"

Piers' expression was that of a surprised shock and general delight...it was his first kiss, ever, even apart from his horrid mother who luckily never had the chance...Piers' reaction? He gently took the canteen in Alex's hands and gently set it down between the two of them, before he lightly tugged her form up against him, further into the safety of the tarp so that no one could see them except if they specifically were looking inside...his hands were slightly rough but sturdy and strong for their size, and his arms were warm, comfortingly and rather firm themselves as his lips met Alex's fully, his eyes half-open on her own as if to see how she reacted to his own move, one of his hands sliding down her arm to lightly brush against her own hand...silently hoping he didn't just screw himself.
